Global symmetries play an important role in classifying the spectrum of a gauge theory. In the context of the AdS/CFT duality, global baryon-like symmetries are specially interesting. In the gravity side, they correspond to vector fields in AdS arising from KK reduction of the SUGRA p-form potentials. We concentrate on the AdS_4/CFT_3 case, which presents very interesting characteristic features. Following arXiv:1004.2045, we review aspects of such symmetries, clarifying along the way some arguments in that reference. As a byproduct, and in a slightly unrelated context, we also study Z-minimization, focusing in the HVZ theory.
We study the breaking of baryonic symmetries in the AdS_5/CFT_4 correspondence for D3 branes at Calabi-Yau three-fold singularities. This leads, for particular VEVs, to the emergence of non-anomalous baryonic symmetries during the renormalization group flow. We claim that these VEVs correspond to critical values of the B-field moduli in the dual supergravity backgrounds. We study in detail the C^3/Z_3 orbifold, the cone over F_0 and the C^3/Z_5 orbifold. For the first two examples, we study the dual supergravity backgrounds that correspond to the breaking of the emerging baryonic symmetries an…
We study U(1) symmetries dual to Betti multiplets in the AdS_4/CFT_3 correspondence for M2 branes at Calabi-Yau four-fold singularities. Analysis of the boundary conditions for vector fields in AdS_4 allows for a choice where wrapped M5 brane states carrying non-zero charge under such symmetries can be considered. We begin by focusing on isolated toric singularities without vanishing six-cycles, and study in detail the cone over Q^{111}. The boundary conditions considered are dual to a CFT where the gauge group is U(1)^2 x SU(N)^4. We find agreement between the spectrum of gauge-invariant bary…
We study the gravity duals of symmetry-breaking deformations of superconformal field theories, AdS/CFT dual to Type IIB string theory on AdS_5 x Y where Y is a Sasaki-Einstein manifold. In these vacua both conformal invariance and baryonic symmetries are spontaneously broken. We present a detailed discussion of the supergravity moduli space, which involves flat form fields on asymptotically conical Calabi-Yau manifolds, and match this to the gauge theory vacuum moduli space. We discuss certain linearised fluctuations of the moduli, identifying the Goldstone bosons associated with spontaneous b…
In the first part of this thesis we study baryonic U(1) symmetries dual to Betti multiplets in the AdS_4/CFT_3 correspondence for M2 branes at Calabi-Yau 4-fold singularities. We begin by focusing on isolated toric singularities without vanishing 6-cycles, which we classify, and propose for them field theory duals. We then study in detail the cone over Q^111 and find agreement between the spectrum of baryonic operators in this theory and M5 branes wrapping 5-cycles in the Q^111 space. The physics of vacua in which these symmetries are spontaneously broken precisely matches a dual gravity analy…
We study the supersymmetric free energy of three dimensional Chern-Simons-matter theories holographically dual to AdS$_4$ times toric Sasaki-Einstein seven-manifolds. In the large $N$ limit, we argue that the square of the free energy can be written as a quartic polynomial of trial R-charges. The coefficients of the polynomial are determined geometrically from the toric diagrams. We present the coefficients of the quartic polynomial explicitly for generic toric diagrams with up to 6 vertices, and some particular diagrams with 8 vertices. Decomposing the trial R-charges into mesonic and baryoni…
Baryonic matter is notoriously difficult to deal with in the large-N limit, as baryons become operators of very large dimension with N fields in the fundamental representation. This issue is also present in gauge/gravity duals as baryons are described by very heavy localized objects. There are however alternative large-N extrapolations of QCD where small baryonic operators exist and can be treated on an equal footing to mesons. We explore the possibility of turning on a finite density of "light" baryons in a theory with a hadronic mass gap using a gauge/gravity construction based on the D3/D7 …
This is the introductory chapter of a review collection on integrability in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. In the collection we present an overview of the achievements and the status of this subject as of the year 2010.
Verlinde argued \cite{Verlinde:2016toy} that baryonic matter in de Sitter Universe with a Hubble constant $H$ produces a bulk contribution to the vacuum entanglement entropy $δS_{ent}$. Using the de Sitter temperature $T_{dS}=\frac{H}{2π}$, he interpreted $δM$ in the first law $T_{dS}\ δS_{ent}=-δM$ with the Dark Matter energy. We use standard tools of the gauge/gravity correspondence to present some evidence for the Verlinde's proposal.
We analyse the classical moduli spaces of supersymmetric vacua of 3d N=2 Chern-Simons quiver gauge theories. We show quite generally that the moduli space of the 3d theory always contains a baryonic branch of a parent 4d N=1 quiver gauge theory, where the 4d baryonic branch is determined by the vector of 3d Chern-Simons levels. In particular, starting with a 4d quiver theory dual to a 3-fold singularity, for certain general choices of Chern-Simons levels this branch of the moduli space of the corresponding 3d theory is a 4-fold singularity. Our results lead to a simple general method, using ex…
We consider generic toric Tri-Sasakian 7-manifolds X_7 in the context of M-theory on AdS_4 X X_7 and study their AdS/CFT correspondence to N=3 SCFT in 3D spacetime. We obtain volumes of Tri-Sasakian manifolds and their supersymmetric 5-cycles via cohomological integration technique, and use this to calculate conformal dimensions of baryonic operators in the SCFT side. We also propose quiver-type gauge theories for UV description of the corresponding N=3 SCFT.
We consider deformations of N=1 superconformal field theories that are AdS/CFT dual to Type IIB string theory on Sasaki-Einstein manifolds, characterised by non-zero vacuum expectation values for certain baryonic operators. Such baryonic branches are constructed from (partially) resolved, asymptotically conical Ricci-flat Kahler manifolds, together with a choice of point where the stack of D3-branes is placed. The complete solution then describes a renormalisation group flow between two AdS fixed points. We discuss the use of probe Euclidean D3-branes in these backgrounds as a means to compute…
We elucidate the relationship between supersymmetric D3-branes and chiral baryonic operators in the AdS/CFT correspondence. For supersymmetric backgrounds of the form AdS_5 x H, we characterize via holomorphy a large family of supersymmetric D3-brane probes wrapped on H. We then quantize this classical family of probe solutions to obtain a BPS spectrum which describes D3-brane configurations on H. For the particular examples H = T^{1,1} and H = S^5, we match the BPS spectrum to the spectrum of chiral baryonic operators in the dual gauge theory.
I present an informal overview of several recent results about Euclidean saddle points sourced by axion fields in quantum gravity (AdS/CFT), such as wormholes, their extremal "D-instanton" limits and their under-extremal singular counterparts. Concerning wormholes we argue they cannot contribute to the path integral because a stability analysis suggests they fragment like other super-extremal objects. For concrete AdS/CFT embeddings the Euclidean saddle point solutions are neatly described by geodesic curves living inside moduli spaces and can typically be solved for using group theory. Our wo…
We aim at providing an overview on the applications of the AdS/CFT correspondence to non-perturbative aspects of non-Abelian gauge theories, addressed to particle physicists. The finite temperature case, in connection with the physics of the quark-gluon plasma, is emphasized.
This is an introductory lecture note aiming at providing an overview of the AdS-CFT correspondence at weak 't Hooft coupling at finite temperature. The first aim of this note is to describe the equivalence of three interesting thermodynamical phenomena in theoretical physics, namely, Hawking-Page transition to black hole geometry, deconfinement transition in gauge theories, and vortex condensation on string worldsheets. The Hawking-Page transition and the deconfinement transition in weakly coupled gauge theories are briefly reviewed. Emphasis is on the study of 't Hooft-Feynman diagrams in the…
We give full details for the computation of the Kaluza--Klein mass spectrum of Type IIB Supergravity on AdS_5 x T^{11}, with T^{11}=SU(2)xSU(2)/U(1), that has recently lead to both stringent tests and interesting predictions on the AdS_5/CFT_4 correspondence for N=1 SCFT's (hep-th/9905226). We exhaustively explain how KK states arrange into SU(2,2|1) supermultiplets, and stress some relevant features of the T^{11} manifold, such as the presence of topological modes in the spectrum originating from the existence of non-trivial 3-cycles. The corresponding Betti vector multiplet is responsible fo…
We construct composite CFT operators from a large number of fermionic primary fields corresponding to states that are holographically dual to a zero temperature Fermi gas in AdS space. We identify a large N regime in which the fermions behave as free particles. In the hydrodynamic limit the Fermi gas forms a degenerate star with a radius determined by the Fermi level, and a mass and angular momentum that exactly matches the boundary calculations. Next we consider an interacting regime, and calculate the effect of the gravitational back-reaction on the radius and the mass of the star using the …
We introduce the gauge/gravity, or AdS/CFT, correspondence with an eye towards its application to strongly coupled systems. We provide an overview of the duality, including the AdS/CFT dictionary and holographic renormalization. We then discuss simple correlation functions in the context of renormalization group flow geometries, holographic thermodynamics and an application to the phase diagram of QCD, real-time correlators and the shear viscosity of strongly coupled field theories, holographic superconductors, and the application of holographic fermionic response to strange metals. These lect…
In this paper we discuss candidate superconformal N=2 gauge theories that realize the AdS/CFT correspondence with M--theory compactified on the homogeneous Sasakian 7-manifolds M^7 that were classified long ago. In particular we focus on the two cases M^7=Q^{1,1,1} and M^7=M^{1,1,1}, for the latter the Kaluza Klein spectrum being completely known. We show how the toric description of M^7 suggests the gauge group and the supersingleton fields. The conformal dimensions of the latter can be independently calculated by comparison with the mass of baryonic operators that correspond to 5-branes wrap…
We have computed the baryon spectrum in the context of $\mathcal{N} = 4$ super-conformal Yang-Mills theory using AdS/CFT duality. Baryons are included in the theory by adding an open string sector, corresponding to quarks in the fundamental and higher representations. The hadron mass scale is introduced by imposing boundary conditions at the wall at the end of AdS space. The quantum numbers of each baryon, are identified by matching the fall-off of the string wavefunction $Ψ(x,r)$ at the asymptotic 3+1 boundary to the operator dimension of the lowest three-quark Fock state, subject to appropri…
We consider the generalization of the S-duality transformation previously investigated in the context of the FQHE and s-wave superconductivity to p-wave superconductivity in 2+1 dimensions in the framework of the AdS/CFT correspondence. The vector Cooper condensate transforms under the S-duality action to the pseudovector condensate at the dual side. The 3+1-dimensional Einstein-Yang-Mills theory, the holographic dual to p-wave superconductivity, is used to investigate the S-duality action via the AdS/CFT correspondence. It is shown that in order to implement the duality transformation, chemic…
We give a breezy, qualitative overview of some of our recent results on studying jet stopping in strongly-coupled plasmas using gauge-gravity duality. Previously, people have found that the maximum stopping distance in such plasmas scales with energy as E^{1/3}. We show that there is an important distinction between typical and maximum stopping distances. For the strongly-coupled excitations that we study, we find that the typical stopping distance scales with energy as E^{1/4}.
We give an overview the results of some numerical simulations of Bjorken flow in the framework of the AdS/CFT correspondence, as described in arXiv:1411.1969.
For a boundary CFT to give a good approximation to the bulk flat-space S-matrix, a number of conditions need to be satisfied: some of those are investigated here. In particular, one would like to identify an appropriate set of approximate asymptotic scattering states, constructed purely via boundary data. We overview, elaborate, and simplify obstacles encountered with existing proposals for these. Those corresponding to normalizable wavefunctions undergo multiple interactions; we contrast this situation with that needed for a flat-space LSZ treatment. Non-normalizable wavefunctions can have sp…
We introduce a series of articles reviewing various aspects of integrable models relevant to the AdS/CFT correspondence. Topics covered in these reviews are: classical integrability, Yangian symmetry, factorized scattering, the Bethe ansatz, the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz, and integrable structures in (conformal) quantum field theory. In the present article we highlight how these concepts have found application in AdS/CFT, and provide a brief overview of the material contained in this series.
This conference proceeding presents an overview of the modern approaches in the study of baryonic matter at high densities, focusing on the use of online repositories such as CompOSE and MUSES for the calculation of neutron star properties. In this context, relevant astrophysical constraints for the equations of state (mass-radius relation, speed of sound, tidal deformability) are discussed.
We give an overview of the light-front holographic approach to strongly coupled QCD, whereby a confining gauge theory, quantized on the light front, is mapped to a higher-dimensional anti de Sitter (AdS) space. The framework is guided by the AdS/CFT correspondence incorporating a gravitational background asymptotic to AdS space which encodes the salient properties of QCD, such as the ultraviolet conformal limit at the AdS boundary at $z \to 0$, as well as modifications of the geometry in the large $z$ infrared region to describe confinement and linear Regge behavior. There are two equivalent p…
