In order to reveal the origin of the ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) that are frequently observed in active galactic nuclei (AGNs), we perform two-dimensional radiation hydrodynamics simulations of the line-driven disk winds, which are accelerated by the radiation force due to the spectral lines. The line-driven winds are successfully launched for the range of $M_{\rm BH}=10^{6-9}M_\odot$ and $\varepsilon$=0.1-0.5, and the resulting mass outflow rate ($\dot{M_{\rm w}}$), momentum flux ($\dot{p_{\rm w}}$), and kinetic luminosity ($\dot{E_{\rm w}}$) are in the region containing 90% of the posterior probability distribution in the $\dot M_{\rm w}$-$L_{\rm bol}$ plane, $\dot p_{\rm w}$-$L_{\rm bol}$ plane, and $\dot E_{\rm w}$-$L_{\rm bol}$ plane shown in Gofford et al., where $M_{\rm BH}$ is the black hole mass, $\varepsilon$ is the Eddington ratio, and $L_{\rm bol}$ is the bolometric luminosity. The best-fitting relations in Gofford et al., $d\log\dot{M_{\rm w}}/d\log{L_{\rm bol}}\sim 0.9$, $d\log\dot{p_{\rm w}}/d\log{L_{\rm bol}}\sim 1.2$, and $d\log\dot{E_{\rm w}}/d\log{L_{\rm bol}}\sim 1.5$, are roughly consistent with our results, $d\log\dot{M_{\rm w}}/d\log{L_{\rm bol}}\sim 9/8$, $d\log\dot{p_{\rm w}}/d\log{L_{\rm bol}}\sim 10/8$, and $d\log\dot{E_{\rm w}}/d\log{L_{\rm bol}}\sim 11/8$. In addition, our model predicts that no UFO features are detected for the AGNs with $\varepsilon \lesssim 0.01$, since the winds do not appear. Also, only AGNs with $M_{\rm BH} \lesssim 10^8 M_\odot$ exhibit the UFOs when $\varepsilon \sim 0.025$. These predictions nicely agree with the X-ray observations (Gofford et al.). These results support that the line-driven disk wind is the origin of the UFOs.
Many astrophysical sources, e.g., cataclysmic variables, X-ray binaries, active galactic nuclei, exhibit a wind outflow, when they reveal a multicolor blackbody spectrum, hence harboring a geometrically thin Keplerian accretion disk. Unlike an advective disk, in the thin disk, the physical environment, like, emission line, external heating, is expected to play a key role to drive the wind outflow. We show the wind outflow in a thin disk attributing a disk irradiation effect, probably from the inner to outer disks. We solve the set of steady, axisymmetric disk model equations in cylindrical coo…
We review observations of several classes of neutron-star-powered outflows: pulsar-wind nebulae (PWNe) inside shell supernova remnants (SNRs), PWNe interacting directly with interstellar medium (ISM), and magnetar-powered outflows. We describe radio, X-ray, and gamma-ray observations of PWNe, focusing first on integrated spectral-energy distributions (SEDs) and global spectral properties. High-resolution X-ray imaging of PWNe shows a bewildering array of morphologies, with jets, trails, and other structures. Several of the 23 so far identified magnetars show evidence for continuous or sporadic…
Observations show that winds can be driven from the innermost region (inside a 50 Schwarschild radius) of a thin disk. It is interesting to study the winds launched from the innermost region. A hot corona above the black hole (BH) thin disk is irradiated by the disk. We perform two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations to study the winds driven by radiation force from the corona in the innermost regions. The hard X-ray spectrum from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) suggests that the corona temperature is about $10^9$ K, so that we mainly analyze the properties of winds (or outflows) from the $10…
Powerful winds driven by active galactic nuclei (AGN) are often invoked to play a fundamental role in the evolution of both supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and their host galaxies, quenching star formation and explaining the tight SMBH-galaxy relations. Recent observations of large-scale molecular outflows in ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) have provided the evidence to support these studies, as they directly trace the gas out of which stars form. Theoretical models suggest an origin of these outflows as energy-conserving flows driven by fast AGN accretion disk winds. Previous claim…
Winds are commonly observed in luminous active galactic nuclei (AGNs). A plausible model of those winds is magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) disc winds. In the case of disc winds from a thin accretion disc, isothermal or adiabatic assumption is usually adopted in such MHD models. In this work we perform two-dimensional MHD simulations implementing different thermal treatments (isothermal, adiabatic and radiative) to study their effects on winds from a thin accretion disc. We find that both the isothermal model and the adiabatic model overestimate the temperature, underestimate the power of disc winds,…
In this paper, we study magnetized winds described by variable adiabatic index equation of state in Paczyński \& Wiita pseudo-Newtonian potential. We identify the flow solutions with the parameter space of the flow. We also confirm that the physical wind solution is the one which passes through the slow, Alfvén and fast critical points. We study the dependence of the wind solution on the Bernoulli parameter $E$ and the total angular momentum $L$. The adiabatic index, which is a function of temperature and composition, was found to be variable in all the outflow solutions. For the same values o…
Analytical and numerical solutions are obtained for the equation of radiative transfer in ultra-relativistic opaque jets. The solution describes the initial trapping of radiation, its adiabatic cooling, and the transition to transparency. Two opposite regimes are examined: (1) Matter-dominated outflow. Surprisingly, radiation develops enormous anisotropy in the fluid frame before decoupling from the fluid. The radiation is strongly polarized. (2) Radiation-dominated outflow. The transfer occurs as if radiation propagated in vacuum, preserving the angular distribution and the blackbody shape of…
Multiple spectroscopic lines of different elements observed in winds from X-ray binaries (XRBs), based on one zone model, indicate super-solar abundance of elements, e.g. Mg, Si, S, Ar, Ca, Cr, Mn, Co. The one zone model considers similar hydrodynamics of underlying winds. In order to find a possible origin of these overabundances, we explore nucleosynthesis in advective, geometrically thick, sub-Keplerian, accretion disc in XRBs and active galactic nuclei (AGNs), and further in outflows launched from the disc. Based on flow hydrodynamics and solving nuclear network code therein by semi-implic…
UltraFast Outflows (UFO) are observed in some active galactic nuclei (AGN), with blueshifted and highly ionised Fe-K absorption features. AGN typically have a UV bright accretion flow, so UV line driving is an obvious candidate for launching these winds. However this mechanism requires material with UV opacity, in apparent conflict with the observed high ionisation state of the wind. In this paper we synthesise the X-ray energy spectra resulting from different lines of sight through a state of the art radiation hydrodynamics UV line driven disc wind simulation. We demonstrate that there are so…
Based on recent X-ray observations, ultra-fast outflows from supermassive black holes are expected to have enough energy to dramatically affect their host galaxy but their launch and acceleration mechanisms are not well understood. We perform two-dimensional radiation hydrodynamics simulations of UV line-driven disc winds in order to calculate the mass loss rates and kinetic power in these models. We develop a new iterative technique which reduces the mass accretion rate through the inner disc in response to the wind mass loss. This makes the inner disc is less UV bright, reducing the wind pow…
Using long-duration general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of radiatively inefficient accretion discs, the energy, momentum and mass outflow rates from such systems are estimated. Outflows occur via two fairly distinct modes: a relativistic jet and a sub-relativistic wind. The jet power depends strongly on the black hole spin and on the magnetic flux at the horizon. Unless these are very small, the energy output in the jet dominates over that in the wind. For a rapidly spinning black hole accreting in the magnetically arrested limit, it is confirmed that jet power exceeds the tot…
We observed the quasar PG1211+143 using the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope in April 2015 as part of a joint campaign with the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Jansky Very Large Array. Our ultraviolet spectra cover the wavelength range 912-2100 A. We find a broad absorption feature (~1080 km/s) at an observed wavelength of 1240 A. Interpreting this as HI Ly alpha, in the rest frame of PG1211+143 (z=0.0809), this corresponds to an outflow velocity of -16,980 km/s (outflow redshift z_out ~ -0.0551), matching the moderate ionization X-ray absorption system detected in o…
We present an improved model for excess variance spectra describing ultra-fast outflows and successfully apply it to the luminous (L ~ 10^47 erg/s) low-redshift (z = 0.184) quasar PDS 456. The model is able to account well for the broadening of the spike-like features of these outflows in the excess variance spectrum of PDS 456, by considering two effects: a correlation between the outflow velocity and the logarithmic X-ray flux and intrinsic Doppler broadening with v_int = 10^4 km/s. The models were generated by calculating the fractional excess variance of count spectra from a Monte Carlo si…
We study the energetics of the accretion-induced outflow and then plausible jet around black holes/compact objects using a newly developed disc-outflow coupled model. Inter-connecting dynamics of outflow and accretion essentially upholds the conservation laws. The energetics depend strongly on the viscosity parameter αand the cooling factor f which exhibit several interesting features. The bolometric luminosities of ultra-luminous X-ray binaries (e.g. SS433) and family of highly luminous AGNs and quasars can be reproduced by the model under the super-Eddington accretion flows. Under appropriat…
We study line driven winds for models with different radial intensity profiles: standard Shakura-Sunyaev radiating thin discs, uniform intensity discs and truncated discs where driving radiation is cutoff at some radius. We find that global outflow properties depend primarily on the total system luminosity but truncated discs can launch outflows with $\sim 2$ times higher mass flux and $\sim 50\%$ faster outflow velocity than non-truncated discs with the same total radiation flux. Streamlines interior to the truncation radius are largely unaffected and carry the same momentum flux as non-trunc…
We study the radioactively-powered transients produced by accretion disk winds following a compact object merger. Starting with the outflows generated in two-dimensional hydrodynamical disk models, we use wavelength-dependent radiative transfer calculations to generate synthetic light curves and spectra. We show that the brightness and color of the resulting kilonova transients carry information about the merger physics. In the regions of the wind where neutrino irradiation raises the electron fraction to Ye > 0.25, r-process nucleosynthesis halts before producing high-opacity, complex ions (t…
The atomic features in the X-ray spectra of the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) may be associated with the outflow (Middleton et al. 2015), which may provide a way to explore the physics of the ULXs. We construct a conical outflow model, and calculate the thermal X-ray Fe emission lines from the outflows. Our results show that thermal line luminosity decreases with increasing outflow velocity or/and opening angle of the outflow for a fixed kinetic power of the outflows. Assuming the kinetic power of the outflows to be comparable with the accretion power in the ULXs, we find that the equivalen…
Highly ionised winds with velocities ~ 0.1-0.2c were first detected in X-ray spectra of non-BAL AGN a decade ago. Subsequent observations and archival searches have shown such winds to be a common feature of luminous AGN, increasing the belief that powerful ionised winds have a wider importance in galaxy feedback models. Paradoxically, for the best-quantified high velocity outflow (the luminous Seyfert PG1211+143) the wind appears too powerful to be compatible with the observed stellar bulge and black hole masses, suggesting the energy coupling of wind to bulge gas must be inefficient. A recen…
We present a study of X-ray ionization of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) accretion-disk winds in an effort to constrain the physics underlying the highly-ionized ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) inferred by X-ray absorbers often detected in various sub-classes of Seyfert active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Our primary focus is to show that magnetically-driven outflows are indeed physically plausible candidates for the observed outflows accounting for the AGN absorption properties of the present X-ray spectroscopic observations. Employing a stratified MHD wind launched across the entire AGN accretion disk, we …
During the bright outburst in 2011, the black hole candidate IGR J17091-3624 exhibited strong quasi-periodic flare-like events (on timescales of tens of seconds) in some characteristic states, the so-called heartbeat state. From the theoretical point of view, these oscillations may be modeled by the process of accretion disk instability, driven by the dominant radiation pressure and enhanced heating of the plasma. Although the mean accretion rate in this source is probably below the Eddington limit, the oscillations will still have large amplitudes. As the observations show, the source can exh…
From the spectral analysis of long Suzaku observations of five radio-loud AGNs we have been able to discover the presence of ultra-fast outflows with velocities ~0.1c in three of them, namely 3C 111, 3C 120 and 3C 390.3. They are consistent with being accretion disk winds/outflows. We also performed a follow-up on 3C 111 to monitor its outflow on ~7days time-scales and detected an anti-correlated variability of a possible relativistic emission line with respect to blue-shifted Fe K features, following a flux increase. This provides the first direct evidence for an accretion disk-wind connectio…
Recent X-ray observations of blue-shifted absorption lines revealed an existence of the extremely fast disk winds with outflow velocities of ~0.1-0.3c. Such fast outflows would have a large impact on the coevolution of black holes and host galaxies since they are expected to carry a large amount of kinetic energy. One of the common characteristics of these fast winds is a strong time variability of the absorption feature. To investigate this variability, we have developed a new X-ray spectral model of the disk winds, which is generated by 3-dimensional Monte Carlo radiation transfer simulation…
Binary systems of Population III can evolve to microquasars when one of the stars collapses into a black hole. When the compact object accretes matter at a rate greater than the Eddington rate, powerful jets and winds driven by strong radiation pressure should form. We investigate the structure of the jet-wind system for a model of Population III microquasar on scales beyond the jet-wind formation region. Using relativistic hydrodynamic simulations we find that the ratio of kinetic power between the jet and the disk wind determines the configuration of the system. When the power is dominated b…
Using two-dimensional radiation hydrodynamic simulations, we investigate origin of the ultra fast outflows (UFOs) that are often observed in luminous active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We found that the radiation force due to the spectral lines generates strong winds (line-driven disk winds) that are launched from the inner region of accretion disks (~30 Schwarzschild radii). A wide range of black hole masses ($M_{\rm BH}$) and Eddington ratios ($\varepsilon$) was investigated to study conditions for causing the line-driven winds. For $M_{\rm BH} = 10^6-10^9 M_\odot$ and $\varepsilon = 0.1-0.7$, f…
We perform axisymmetric relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations to investigate the acceleration and collimation of jets and outflows from disks around compact objects. The fiducial disk surface (respectively a slow disk wind) is prescribed as boundary condition for the outflow. We apply this technique for the first time in the context of relativistic jets. The strength of this approach is that it allows us to run a parameter study in order to investigate how the accretion disk conditions govern the outflow formation. Our simulations using the PLUTO code run for 500 inner disk rotati…
We propose a 2-temperature radial dynamical model of plasma flow near Sgr A* and fit the bremsstrahlung emission to extensive quiescent X-Ray Chandra data. The model extends from several arcseconds to black hole (BH) gravitational radius, describing the outer accretion flow together with the infalling region. The model incorporates electron heat conduction, relativistic heat capacity of particles and feeding by stellar winds. Stellar winds from each star are considered separately as sources of mass, momentum and energy. Self-consistent search for the stagnation and sonic points is performed. M…
We perform simulations to study the effects of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) radiation and wind feedback on the properties of slowly rotating accretion flow at parsec scale. We find that when only radiative feedback is considered, outflows can be produced by the radiation pressure due to Thomson scattering. The mass flux of outflow is comparable to that of inflow. Although strong outflow is present, the luminosity of AGN can be easily super-Eddington. When wind feedback is also taken into account, the mass flux of outflow does not change much. Consequently, the luminosity of the central AGN ca…
In this second research note of a series of two, we aim to map the polarized flux emerging from a disk-born, dusty outflow as it was prescribed by Elvis (2000). His structure for quasars was achieved to unify the emission and absorption features observed in active galactic nuclei (AGN) and can be used as an alternative scenario to the typical dusty torus that is extensively used to account for AGN circumnuclear obscuration. Using Monte Carlo radiative transfer simulations, we model an obscuring outflow arising from an emitting accretion disk and examine the resulting polarization degree, polar…
Large-scale, broad outflows are common in active galaxies. In systems where star formation coexists with an AGN, it is unclear yet the role that both play on driving the outflows. In this work we present three-dimensional radiative-cooling MHD simulations of the formation of these outflows, considering the feedback from both the AGN and supernovae-driven winds. We find that a large-opening-angle AGN wind develops fountain structures that make the expanding gas to fall back. Furthermore, it exhausts the gas near the nuclear region, extinguishing star formation and accretion within a few 100.000…
The origin of narrow line region (NLR) outflows remains unknown. In this paper, we explore the scenario in which these outflows are circumnuclear clouds driven by energetic accretion disk winds. We choose the well-studied nearby Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 as an example. By performing 3D hydrodynamical simulations, we are able to reproduce the radial distributions of velocity, mass outflow rate and kinetic luminosity of NLR outflows in the inner 100 pc deduced from spatial resolved spectroscopic observations. The demanded kinetic luminosity of disk winds is about two orders of magnitude higher tha…
An extended XMM-Newton observation of the luminous narrow line Seyfert galaxy PG 1211+143 in 2014 has revealed a more complex highly ionized, high velocity outflow. The detection of previously unresolved spectral structure in Fe K absorption finds a second outflow velocity component of the highly ionized wind, with an outflow velocity of v~0.066+/-0.003c, in addition to a still higher velocity outflow of v~0.129+/-0.002c consistent with that first seen in 2001. We note that chaotic accretion, consisting of many prograde and retrograde events, offers an intriguing explanation of the dual veloci…
Semi-analytical models of disk outflows have successfully described magnetically-driven, self-confined super-Alfvénic jets from near Keplerian accretion disks. These Jet Emitting Disks are possible for high levels of disk magnetization $μ$ defined as $μ=2/β$ where beta is the usual plasma parameter. In near-equipartition JEDs, accretion is supersonic and jets carry away most of the disk angular momentum. However, these solutions prove difficult to compare with cutting edge numerical simulations, for the reason that numerical simulations show wind-like outflows but in the domain of small magnet…
Observations of jets from young stellar objects reveal the asymmetric outflows from some sources. A large set of $2.5$D MHD simulations has been carried out for axisymmetric viscous/diffusive disc accretion to rotating magnetized stars for the purpose of assessing the conditions where the outflows or jets are asymmetric relative to the equatorial plane. We consider initial magnetic fields that are symmetric about the equatorial plane and consist of a radially distributed field threading the disc (disc-field) and a stellar dipole field.({\bf 1}). For pure disc-fields the symmetry or asymmetry o…
It has been suggested that non-relativistic outflows from quasars can naturally account for the missing component of the extragalactic $γ$-ray background and explain the cumulative neutrino background through pion decay in collisions between protons accelerated by the outflow shock and interstellar protons. Here we show that the same quasar outflows are capable of accelerating protons to energies of $\sim 10^{20}$ eV during the early phase of their propagation. The overall quasar population is expected to produce a cumulative ultra high energy cosmic ray flux of $\sim10^{-7}\,\rm GeV\,cm^{-2}s…
During the last decade, strong observational evidence has been accumulated for the existence of massive, high velocity winds/outflows (aka Ultra Fast Outflows, UFOs) in nearby AGNs and in more distant quasars. Here we briefly review some of the most recent developments in this field and discuss the relevance of UFOs for both understanding the physics of accretion disk winds in AGNs, and for quantifying the global amount of AGN feedback on the surrounding medium.
Kinematic signatures of the jet, winds, multicavities, and episodic shells arising in the unified model of bipolar outflows developed in Shang et al.\ (2020), in which an outflow forms by radially directed, wide-angle toroidally magnetized winds interacting with magnetized isothermal toroids, are extracted in the form of position--velocity diagrams. Elongated outflow lobes, driven by magnetized winds and their interplay with the environment, are dominated by extended bubble structures with mixing layers beyond the conventional thin-shell models. The axial cylindrically stratified density jet c…
Ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) are seen in many AGN, giving a possible mode for AGN feedback onto the host galaxy. However, the mechanism(s) for the launch and acceleration of these outflows are currently unknown, with UV line driving apparently strongly disfavoured as the material along the line of sight is so highly ionised that it has no UV transitions. We revisit this issue using the Suzaku X-ray data from PDS 456, an AGN with the most powerful UFO seen in the local Universe. We explore conditions in the wind by developing a new 3-D Monte-Carlo code for radiation transport. The code only handl…
We present a detailed analysis of XMM-Newton X-ray spectra of the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 1044. We find robust evidence for a multi-phase, ultra-fast outflow, traced by four separate components in the grating spectrum. One component has high column density and ionization state, and is outflowing at 0.15c. The other three wind components have lower temperature, lower column density, and have outflow velocities 0.08c. This wind structure is strikingly similar to that found in IRAS 17020+4544, suggesting that stratified winds may be a common feature of ultra-fast outflows. Such structure…
We present $Chandra$ ACIS imaging spectroscopy of the nucleus of the Seyfert 2 Galaxy Mrk 34. We identify spatially and spectrally resolved features in the band that includes Fe K$α$, Fe XXV and Fe XXVI. These features indicate high-velocity ($\gtrsim15,000\,\rm{km\,s}^{-1}$ line-of-sight) material separated spanning $\sim$0.5 arcsec, within $\sim200$ pc of the nucleus. This outflow could have deprojected velocities $\sim12-28\times$ greater than the [O III] emitting outflows, and could potentially dominate the kinetic power in the outflow. This emission may point to the origins of the optical…

We present new XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations of the galaxy merger IRAS F05189-2524 which is classified as an ultra-luminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) and optical Seyfert 2 at $z$ = 0.0426. We test a variety of spectral models which yields a best-fit consisting of an absorbed power law with emission and absorption features in the Fe K band. Remarkably, we find evidence for a blueshifted Fe K absorption feature at $E$ = 7.8 keV (rest-frame) which implies an ultra-fast outflow (UFO) with $v_{\mathrm{out}} = 0.11\ \pm\ 0.01c$. We calculate that the UFO in IRAS F05189-2524 has a mass outflow rat…
Substantial evidence in the last few decades suggests that outflows from supermassive black holes (SMBH) may play a significant role in the evolution of galaxies.Large-scale outflows known as warm absorbers (WA) and fast disk winds known as ultra-fast outflows (UFO) are commonly found in the spectra of many Seyfert galaxies and quasars, and a correlation has been suggested between them. Recent detections of low ionization and low column density outflows, but with a high velocity comparable to UFOs, challenge such initial possible correlations. Observations of UFOs in AGN indicate that their en…

The nature of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) -- off-nuclear extra-galactic sources with luminosity, assumed isotropic, $\gtrsim 10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$ -- is still debated. One possibility is that ULXs are stellar black holes accreting beyond the Eddington limit. This view has been recently reinforced by the discovery of ultrafast outflows at $\sim 0.1$-$0.2c$ in the high resolution spectra of a handful of ULXs, as predicted by models of supercritical accretion discs. Under the assumption that ULXs are powered by super-Eddington accretion onto black holes, we use the properties of the observ…
Active galactic nuclei (AGN) drive fast winds in the interstellar medium of their host galaxies. It is commonly assumed that the high ambient densities and intense radiation fields in galactic nuclei imply short cooling times, thus making the outflows momentum-conserving. We show that cooling of high-velocity, shocked winds in AGN is in fact inefficient in a wide range of circumstances, including conditions relevant to ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs), resulting in energy-conserving outflows. We further show that fast energy-conserving outflows can tolerate a large amount of mixing wi…
