From the spectral analysis of long Suzaku observations of five radio-loud AGNs we have been able to discover the presence of ultra-fast outflows with velocities ~0.1c in three of them, namely 3C 111, 3C 120 and 3C 390.3. They are consistent with being accretion disk winds/outflows. We also performed a follow-up on 3C 111 to monitor its outflow on ~7days time-scales and detected an anti-correlated variability of a possible relativistic emission line with respect to blue-shifted Fe K features, following a flux increase. This provides the first direct evidence for an accretion disk-wind connection in an AGN. The mass outflow rate of these outflows can be comparable to the accretion rate and their mechanical power can correspond to a significant fraction of the bolometric luminosity and is comparable to their typical jet power. Therefore, they can possibly play a significant role in the expected feedback from AGNs and can give us further clues on the relation between the accretion disk and the formation of winds/jets.
The last decade has seen tremendous developments in gamma-ray astronomy with the extragalactic sky becoming highly populated by Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs). This brief review highlights some of the progress in AGN research achieved over the years, and discusses exemplary advances in the theory and physics of gamma-ray loud AGNs, including black-hole magnetospheric processes, the physics of pc-scales jets, as well as particle acceleration and high-energy emission in the large-scale jets of AGNs.
Suzaku View of the Swift/BAT Active Galactic Nuclei. V. Torus Structure of Two Luminous Radio-loud AGNs (3C 206 and PKS 0707-35)
We present the results from broad-band X-ray spectral analysis of 3C 206 and PKS 0707-35 with Suzaku and Swift/BAT, two of the most luminous unobscured and obscured radio-loud active galactic nuclei with hard X-ray luminosities of 10^{45.5} erg s^{-1} and 10^{44.9} erg s^{-1} (14--195 keV), respectively. Based on the radio core luminosity, we estimate that the X-ray spectrum of 3C 206 contains a significant (~ 60% in the 14--195 keV band) contribution from the jet, while it is negligible in PKS 0707-35. We can successfully model the spectra with the jet component (for 3C 206), the transmitted …
Following previous work, we further confirm that the cosmic evolution of steep-spectrum radio-loud AGNs (active galactic nuclei) can be reproduced by a simple combination of density evolution (DE) and luminosity evolution (LE). This mixture evolution scenario can naturally explain the luminosity-dependent evolution of radio-loud AGNs. Our models successfully fitted a large amount of data on radio luminosity functions (RLFs) of steep-spectrum sources and multi-frequency source counts. The modeling indicates that the DE slowly increase as $(1+z)^{0.3 \thicksim 1.3}$ out to $z \thicksim 0.8$, and…
In radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGNs), ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) were detected at the inclination angle of $\sim10^{\rm o}$--$70^{\rm o}$ away from jets. Except for the inclination angle of UFOs, the UFOs in radio-loud AGNs have similar properties to that in radio-quiet AGNs. The UFOs with such low inclination cannot be explained in the line-force mechanism. The magnetic-driving mechanism is suggested to explain the UFOs based on a self-similar solution with radiative transfer calculations. However, the energetics of self-similar solution need to be further confirmed based on numerical …
We present the observational results from the 43-GHz Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of 124 compact radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGNs) that were conducted between 2014 November and 2016 May. The typical dimensions of the restoring beam in each image are about 0.5 mas $\times$ 0.2 mas. The highest resolution of 0.2 mas corresponds to a physical size of 0.02 pc for the lowest redshift source in the sample. The 43-GHz very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) images of 97 AGNs are presented for the first time. We study the source compactness on milli-arcsec (mas) and sub-mas sca…
AGNs are very powerful galaxies characterized by extremely bright emissions coming out from their central massive black holes. Knowing the redshifts of AGNs provides us with an opportunity to determine their distance to investigate important astrophysical problems such as the evolution of the early stars, their formation along with the structure of early galaxies. The redshift determination is challenging because it requires detailed follow-up of multi-wavelength observations, often involving various astronomical facilities. Here, we employ machine learning algorithms to estimate redshifts fro…
Aims. Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with EUV deficit are suggested to be powered by a MAD surrounding the black hole, where the slope of EUV spectra ($α_{\rm EUV}$) is found to possess a well positive relationship with the jet efficiency. In this work, we investigate the properties of X-ray emission in AGNs with EUV deficit for the first time. Methods. We construct a sample of 15 objects with EUV deficit to analyse their X-ray emission. The X-ray luminosity in 13 objects are newly processed by ourself, while the other 2 sources are gathered from archival data. Results. It is found that the ave…
We apply XCLUMPY, an X-ray spectral model from a clumpy torus in an active galactic nucleus (AGN), to the broadband X-ray spectra of 10 obscured AGNs observed with both Suzaku and NuSTAR. The infrared spectra of these AGNs were analyzed with the CLUMPY code. Since XCLUMPY adopts the same clump distribution as that in the CLUMPY, we can directly compare the torus parameters obtained from the X-ray spectra and those from the infrared ones. The torus angular widths determined from the infrared spectra ($σ_{\mathrm{IR}}$) are systematically larger than those from the X-ray data ($σ_{\mathrm{X}}$);…

State Key Laboratory of Radio Astronomy and Technology, Xinjiang Astronomical Observatory, CAS(中国科学院新疆天文台射电天文与技术国家重点实验室);School of Astronomy and Space Science, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences(中国科学院大学天文与空间科学学院);Xinjiang Key Laboratory of Radio Astrophysics(新疆射电天体物理重点实验室)
Measuring the redshift of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) requires the use of time-consuming and expensive spectroscopic analysis. However, obtaining redshift measurements of AGNs is crucial as it can enable AGN population studies, provide insight into the star formation rate, the luminosity function, and the density rate evolution. Hence, there is a requirement for alternative redshift measurement techniques. In this project, we aim to use the Fermi gamma-ray space telescope's 4LAC Data Release (DR2) catalog to train a machine learning model capable of predicting the redshift reliably. In addit…

It is commonly accepted that radio-loud active galactic nuclei are hosted exclusively by giant elliptical galaxies. We analyze high-resolution optical Hubble Space Telescope images of a sample of radio galaxies with extended double-lobed structures associated with disk-like optical counterparts. After systematically evaluating the probability of chance alignment between the radio lobes and the optical counterparts, we obtain a sample of 18 objects likely to have genuine associations. The host galaxies have unambiguous late-type morphologies, including spiral arms, large-scale dust lanes among …
We use the results of relativistic hydrodynamic simulations of jet-ISM interactions in a galaxy with a radio-loud AGN to quantify the extent of ionization in the central few kpcs of the gaseous galactic disc. We perform post-process radiative transfer of AGN radiation through the simulated gaseous jet-perturbed disc to estimate the extent of photo-ionization by the AGN with an incident luminosity of $10^{45}~\mathrm{erg\,s^{-1}}$. We also map the gas that is collisionally ionized due to shocks driven by the jet. The analysis was carried out for simulations with similar jet power ($10^{45}~\mat…
A recent multi-year Caltech-NRAO Stripe 82 Survey (CNSS) revealed a group of objects that appeared as new radio sources after $>$5--20 years of absence. They are transient phenomena with respect to the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty Centimeters (FIRST) survey and constitute the first unbiased sample of renewed radio activity. Here we present the follow-up, radio, optical and X-ray study of them. The group consist of 12 sources, both quasars and galaxies with wide redshift ($\rm 0.04 < z < 1.7$) and luminosity ($\rm 22<log_{10}[L_{1.4GHz}/W~Hz^{-1}]>24.5$) distribution. Their radio pro…
We address the very large diversity of the jet production efficiency in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) by using data on low redshift AGNs selected from the Swift/BAT catalog and having black hole (BH) masses larger than $10^{8.5}\,M_{\odot}$. Most of these AGNs accrete at intermediate rates and have bolometric luminosities dominated by mid-IR radiation. Our sample contains $14\%$ radio-loud (RL), $6\%$ radio-intermediate (RI), and $80\%$ radio-quiet (RQ) AGNs. All RL objects are found to have extended radio structures and most of them have classical FR II morphology. Converting their radio loud…
As a newly discovered class of radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGNs), the γ-ray detected narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) launch powerful jets which are generally found only in blazars and radio galaxies. However, their black hole (BH) masses as estimated from the broad emission lines are one order of magnitude or more lower than those in blazars. This brings new challenges for explaining the radio loudness triggering in AGNs. It is still under debate whether their BH masses from the commonly used virial method are underestimated. Here we present an estimate of the BH mass for the γ-r…
Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) can be divided into two major classes, namely radio loud and radio quiet AGNs. A small subset of the radio-loud AGNs is called blazars, which are believed to be unified with Fanaroff & Riley type I/II (FRI/II) radio galaxies. Following our previous work (Fan et al. 2011), we present a sample of 2400 sources with measured radio flux densities of the core and extended components. The sample contains 250 BL Lacs, 520 quasars, 175 Seyferts, 1178 galaxies, 153 Fanaroff & Riley type I and type II galaxies and 104 unidentified sources. We then calculate the radio core-do…
We analyze the X-ray, optical, and mid-infrared data of a "changing-look" Seyfert galaxy \sdssj15 at $z\simeq0.086$. Over a period of one decade (2009 - 2018), its broad H$α$ line intensity increased by a factor of $\sim$4. Meanwhile, the X-ray emission in 2014 as observed by \chandra\ was about five times brighter than that in 2010 by {\it Suzaku}, and the corresponding emissions in V-band, mid-infrared W1 band brighten by $\sim$ 0.18, 0.32 mag, respectively. Moreover, the absorption in X-rays is moderate and stable, i.e. ${\rm N_{H}}\sim 10^{21} {\rm cm^{-2}}$, but the X-ray spectrum becomes…

VLBI Detections of Compact Nuclei in Spiral-hosted Double-lobed Radio-loud Active Galactic Nuclei (DRAGNs): Evidence for Weak Parsec-Scale Jet Activity
Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST)(蔚山科学技术院)
We present results from a parsec-scale jet kinematics study of 409 bright radio-loud AGNs based on 15 GHz VLBA data obtained between 1994 August 31 and 2016 December 26 as part of the 2cm VLBA survey and MOJAVE programs. We tracked 1744 individual bright features in 382 jets over at least five epochs. A majority (59%) of the best-sampled jet features showed evidence of accelerated motion at the >3sigma level. Although most features within a jet typically have speeds within ~40% of a characteristic median value, we identified 55 features in 42 jets that had unusually slow pattern speeds, nearly…
We present systematic and uniform analysis of NuSTAR data with 10-78 keV S/N > 50, of a sample of 60 SWIFT BAT selected AGNs, 10 of which are radio-loud. We measure their high energy cutoff Ecut or coronal temperature Te using three different spectral models to fit their NuSTAR spectra, and show a threshold in NuSTAR spectral S/N is essential for such measurements. High energy spectral breaks are detected in the majority of the sample, and for the rest strong constraints to Ecut or Te are obtained. Strikingly, we find extraordinarily large Ecut lower limits ( > 400 keV, up to > 800 keV) in 10 …
