Recent X-ray observations show absorbing winds with velocities up to mildly-relativistic values of the order of ~0.1c in a limited sample of 6 broad-line radio galaxies. They are observed as blue-shifted Fe XXV-XXVI K-shell absorption lines, similarly to the ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) reported in Seyferts and quasars. In this work we extend the search for such Fe K absorption lines to a larger sample of 26 radio-loud AGNs observed with XMM-Newton and Suzaku. The sample is drawn from the Swift BAT 58-month catalog and blazars are excluded. X-ray bright FR II radio galaxies constitute the majority of the sources. Combining the results of this analysis with those in the literature we find that UFOs are detected in >27% of the sources. However, correcting for the number of spectra with insufficient signal-to-noise, we can estimate that the incidence of UFOs is this sample of radio-loud AGNs is likely in the range f=(50+/-20)%. A photo-ionization modeling of the absorption lines with XSTAR allows to estimate the distribution of their main parameters. The observed outflow velocities are broadly distributed between v_out<1,000 km s^-1 and v_out~0.4c, with mean and median values of v_out~0.133c and v_out~0.117c, respectively. The material is highly ionized, with an average ionization parameter of logξ~4.5 erg s^-1 cm, and the column densities are larger than N_H > 10^22 cm^-2. Overall, these characteristics are consistent with the presence of complex accretion disk winds in a significant fraction of radio-loud AGNs and demonstrate that the presence of relativistic jets does not preclude the existence of winds, in accordance with several theoretical models.
Using our theory for the production of relativistic outflows, we estimate the jet launching radius and the inferred mass accretion rate for 52 low-power radio-loud AGNs based on the observed jet powers. Our analysis indicates that (1) a significant fraction of the accreted energy is required to convert the accreted mass to relativistic energy particles for the production of the jets near the event horizon, (2) the jets launching radius moves radially toward the horizon as the mass accretion rate or jets power increases, and (3) no jet/outflow formation is possible beyond 44 gravitational radii…
We present four radio-loud NLS1 galaxies with extreme emission-line shifts, indicating radial outflow velocities of the ionized gas of up to 2450 km/s, above the escape velocity of the host galaxies. The forbidden lines show strong broadening, up to 2270 km/s. An ionization stratification (higher line shift at higher ionization potential) implies that we see a large-scale outflow rather than single, localized jet-cloud interactions. Similarly, the paucity of zero-velocity [OIII]$λ$5007 emitting gas implies the absence of a second narrow-line region (NLR) component at rest, and therefore a larg…
Outflows of photoionized gas are commonly detected in the X-ray spectra of Seyfert 1 galaxies. However, the evidence for this phenomenon in broad line radio galaxies, which are analogous to Seyfert 1 galaxies in the radio-loud regime, has so far been scarce. Here, we present the analysis of the X-ray absorption in the radio-loud quasar 4C +74.26. With the aim of characterizing the kinetic and the ionization conditions of the absorbing material, we fitted jointly the XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) and the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS) spectra, w…
In radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGNs), ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) were detected at the inclination angle of $\sim10^{\rm o}$--$70^{\rm o}$ away from jets. Except for the inclination angle of UFOs, the UFOs in radio-loud AGNs have similar properties to that in radio-quiet AGNs. The UFOs with such low inclination cannot be explained in the line-force mechanism. The magnetic-driving mechanism is suggested to explain the UFOs based on a self-similar solution with radiative transfer calculations. However, the energetics of self-similar solution need to be further confirmed based on numerical …
We investigate the relation between the two modes of outflow (wind and jet) in radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN). For this study we have carried out a systematic and homogeneous analysis of XMM-Newton spectra of a sample of 16 suitable radio-loud Seyfert-1 AGN. The ionised winds in these AGN are parameterised through high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy and photoionisation modelling. We discover a significant inverse correlation between the column density NH of the ionised wind and the radio-loudness parameter R of the jet. We explore different possible explanations for this NH-R relation …
The dynamics of a dissipative Poynting dominated flow subject to a radiation drag due to Compton scattering of ambient photons by relativistic electrons accelerated in reconnecting current sheets is studied. It is found that the efficiency at which magnetic energy is converted to radiation is limited to a maximum value of $ε_c=3l_{dis}\,σ_0/4(σ_0+1)$, where $σ_0$ is the initial magnetization of the flow and $l_{dis}\le1$ the fraction of initial Poynting flux that can dissipate. The asymptotic Lorentz factor satisfies $Γ_\infty\geΓ_0(1+l_{dis}\,σ_0/4)$, where $Γ_0$ is the initial Lorentz factor…
We observed the quasar PG1211+143 using the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope in April 2015 as part of a joint campaign with the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Jansky Very Large Array. Our ultraviolet spectra cover the wavelength range 912-2100 A. We find a broad absorption feature (~1080 km/s) at an observed wavelength of 1240 A. Interpreting this as HI Ly alpha, in the rest frame of PG1211+143 (z=0.0809), this corresponds to an outflow velocity of -16,980 km/s (outflow redshift z_out ~ -0.0551), matching the moderate ionization X-ray absorption system detected in o…
We present an improved model for excess variance spectra describing ultra-fast outflows and successfully apply it to the luminous (L ~ 10^47 erg/s) low-redshift (z = 0.184) quasar PDS 456. The model is able to account well for the broadening of the spike-like features of these outflows in the excess variance spectrum of PDS 456, by considering two effects: a correlation between the outflow velocity and the logarithmic X-ray flux and intrinsic Doppler broadening with v_int = 10^4 km/s. The models were generated by calculating the fractional excess variance of count spectra from a Monte Carlo si…
A review of the current challenges for the understanding of the physics of extragalactic radio jets from supermassive black holes is presented. Also, a prospect is given about how both very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) and polarimetric observations help us to understand their physics and the ones of their magnetic fields. This paper focuses on the impact that previous ultra-high resolution polarimetric surveys have had on our current knowledge on radio loud AGN. It first concentrates on the expectations about the improvement that the Square Kilometer Array, used as a super-sensitive VLB…
The atomic features in the X-ray spectra of the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) may be associated with the outflow (Middleton et al. 2015), which may provide a way to explore the physics of the ULXs. We construct a conical outflow model, and calculate the thermal X-ray Fe emission lines from the outflows. Our results show that thermal line luminosity decreases with increasing outflow velocity or/and opening angle of the outflow for a fixed kinetic power of the outflows. Assuming the kinetic power of the outflows to be comparable with the accretion power in the ULXs, we find that the equivalen…
Accretion at super-Eddington rates is expected to be accompanied by strong outflows. Such outflows are observed in Galactic X-ray binaries and extragalactic Ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs). However, due to their large source distances, ULX outflows are challenging to detect and study in detail. Galactic neutron stars accreting from a Be-star companion at super-Eddington rates show many similarities to ULX pulsars, and therefore offer an alternative approach to study outflows in this accretion regime. Here, we present Chandra high-resolution spectroscopy of such a super-Eddington accreting …
Outflows are observed in a variety of astrophysical sources. Remarkably, ultra-fast ($v\geq 0.1c$), outflows in the UV and X-ray bands are often seen in AGNs. Depending on their energy and mass outflow rate, respectively $\dot{E}_{out}, \dot{M}_{out}$, such outflows may play a key role in regulating the AGN-host galaxy co-evolution process through cosmic time. It is therefore crucial to provide accurate estimates of the wind properties. Here, we concentrate on special relativistic effects concerning the interaction of light with matter moving at relativistic speed relatively to the source of r…
We present an analysis of the long-term X-ray variability of the extreme narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxy IRAS 13224-3809 using principal component analysis (PCA) and fractional excess variability (Fvar) spectra to identify model-independent spectral components. We identify a series of variability peaks in both the first PCA component and Fvar spectrum which correspond to the strongest predicted absorption lines from the ultra-fast outflow (UFO) discovered by Parker et al. (2017). We also find higher order PCA components, which correspond to variability of the soft excess and reflection fea…
The discovery of an ultrafast outflow has been reported in the z=0.0658 narrow line Seyfert galaxy IRAS 13224-3809 (Parker et al. 2017a). The ultrafast outflow was first inferred through the detection of highly blueshifted absorption lines (Parker et al. 2017a) and then confirmed with a principal component analysis (PCA) (Parker et al. 2017b). Two of the reported properties of this outflow differed from those typically detected in other AGN with ultrafast outflows. First, the outflow velocity was found not to vary with v=0.236c +/- 0.006c. Second, the equivalent width of the highly blueshifted…
We present joint NuSTAR and XMM-Newton observations of the bright, variable quasar IRAS 13349+2438. This combined dataset shows two clear iron absorption lines at 8 and 9 keV, which are most likely associated with two layers of mildly relativistic blueshifted absorption, with velocities of 0.14c and 0.27c. We also find strong evidence for a series of Ly$α$ absorption lines at intermediate energies in a stacked XMM-Newton EPIC-pn spectrum, at the same blueshift as the lower velocity iron feature. This is consistent with a scenario where an outflowing wind is radially stratified, so faster, high…
Radio-loud Narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies are unique probes of the formation of powerful radio jets at extreme (near-Eddington) accretion rates and low black hole masses, in a regime very different from classical blazars and, therefore, not probed before. Further, strong thermal and non-thermal components simultaneously present in their spectral energy distributions (SEDs), shed new light on the jet-disk connection at much shorter timescales, given their low SMBH masses. While NLS1 galaxies have been studied thoroughly at optical and X-ray energies for decades, the populations of radio-…

Among a number of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) that drive ionized outflows in X-rays, a low-redshift (z = 0.184) quasar, PDS 456, is long known to exhibit one of the exemplary ultra-fast outflows (UFOs). However, the physical process of acceleration mechanism is yet to be definitively constrained. In this work, we model the variations of the Fe K UFO properties in PDS 456 over many epochs in X-ray observations in the context of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) accretion-disk winds employed in our earlier studies of similar X-ray absorbers. We applied the model to the 2013/2014 XMM-Newton/NuSTAR spec…
Aims. Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with EUV deficit are suggested to be powered by a MAD surrounding the black hole, where the slope of EUV spectra ($α_{\rm EUV}$) is found to possess a well positive relationship with the jet efficiency. In this work, we investigate the properties of X-ray emission in AGNs with EUV deficit for the first time. Methods. We construct a sample of 15 objects with EUV deficit to analyse their X-ray emission. The X-ray luminosity in 13 objects are newly processed by ourself, while the other 2 sources are gathered from archival data. Results. It is found that the ave…
Ultraluminous X-ray sources are extragalactic, off-nucleus, point sources in galaxies with an X-ray luminosity above 3x10^39 erg/s, thought to be powered by accretion onto a compact object. Possible explanations include accretion onto neutron stars with strong magnetic fields, stellar-mass black holes (< 20 Msolar) at or in excess of the classical Eddington limit or intermediate-mass black holes (10^3-5 Msolar). The lack of sufficient energy resolution in previous analyses has hitherto prevented an unambiguous identification of any emission or absorption lines in the X-ray band, thereby preclu…
Relativistically blueshifted absorption features of highly ionised ions, the so-called ultra-fast outflows (UFOs), have been detected in the X-ray spectra of a number of accreting supermassive black holes. If these features truly originate from accretion disc winds accelerated to more than 10 per cent of the speed of light, their energy budget is very significant and they can contribute to or even drive galaxy-scale feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN). However, the UFO spectral features are often weak due to high ionisation of the outflowing material, and the inference of the wind physi…
The nearby accreting neutron star binary Sco X-1 is the closest example of ongoing relativistic jet production at high Eddington ratios. Previous radio studies have revealed that alongside mildly relativistic, radio-emitting ejecta, there is at times a much faster transfer of energy from the region of the accretion flow along the jet. The nature of this ultrarelativistic flow remains unclear and while there is some evidence for a similar phenomenon in other systems which might contain neutron stars, it has never been observed in a confirmed black hole system. We have compared these previous ra…
At only 90 Mpc, ASASSN-14li is one of the nearest tidal disruption event (TDE) ever discovered, and because of this, it has been observed by several observatories at many wavelengths. In this paper, we present new results on archival XMM-Newton observations, three of which were taken at early times (within 40 days of the discovery), and three of which were taken at late times, about one year after the peak. We find that, at early times, in addition to the ~1e5 K blackbody component that dominates the X-ray band, there is evidence for a broad, P Cygni-like absorption feature at around 0.7 keV i…
Winds are commonly observed in luminous active galactic nuclei (AGNs). A plausible model of those winds is magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) disc winds. In the case of disc winds from a thin accretion disc, isothermal or adiabatic assumption is usually adopted in such MHD models. In this work we perform two-dimensional MHD simulations implementing different thermal treatments (isothermal, adiabatic and radiative) to study their effects on winds from a thin accretion disc. We find that both the isothermal model and the adiabatic model overestimate the temperature, underestimate the power of disc winds,…
Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are bright extragalactic sources with X-ray luminosities above 10^39 erg/s powered by accretion onto compact objects. According to the first studies performed with XMM-Newton ULXs seemed to be excellent candidates to host intermediate-mass black holes (10^2-4 solar masses). However, in the last years the interpretation of super-Eddington accretion onto stellar-mass black holes or neutron stars for most ULXs has gained a strong consensus. One critical missing piece to confirm the super-Eddington scenario was the direct detection of the massive, radiatively-dri…
It has been suggested that non-relativistic outflows from quasars can naturally account for the missing component of the extragalactic $γ$-ray background and explain the cumulative neutrino background through pion decay in collisions between protons accelerated by the outflow shock and interstellar protons. Here we show that the same quasar outflows are capable of accelerating protons to energies of $\sim 10^{20}$ eV during the early phase of their propagation. The overall quasar population is expected to produce a cumulative ultra high energy cosmic ray flux of $\sim10^{-7}\,\rm GeV\,cm^{-2}s…
We present $Chandra$ ACIS imaging spectroscopy of the nucleus of the Seyfert 2 Galaxy Mrk 34. We identify spatially and spectrally resolved features in the band that includes Fe K$α$, Fe XXV and Fe XXVI. These features indicate high-velocity ($\gtrsim15,000\,\rm{km\,s}^{-1}$ line-of-sight) material separated spanning $\sim$0.5 arcsec, within $\sim200$ pc of the nucleus. This outflow could have deprojected velocities $\sim12-28\times$ greater than the [O III] emitting outflows, and could potentially dominate the kinetic power in the outflow. This emission may point to the origins of the optical…
In the current paradigm, it is believed that the compact VLBI radio core of radio-loud AGNs represents the innermost upstream regions of relativistic outflows. These regions of AGN jets have generally been modeled by a conical outflow with roughly constant opening angle and flow speed. Nonetheless, some works suggest that a parabolic geometry would be more appropriate to fit the high energy spectral energy distribution properties and it has been recently found that, at least in some nearby radio-galaxies, the geometry of the innermost regions of the jet is parabolic. We compile here multi-freq…
We present new XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations of the galaxy merger IRAS F05189-2524 which is classified as an ultra-luminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) and optical Seyfert 2 at $z$ = 0.0426. We test a variety of spectral models which yields a best-fit consisting of an absorbed power law with emission and absorption features in the Fe K band. Remarkably, we find evidence for a blueshifted Fe K absorption feature at $E$ = 7.8 keV (rest-frame) which implies an ultra-fast outflow (UFO) with $v_{\mathrm{out}} = 0.11\ \pm\ 0.01c$. We calculate that the UFO in IRAS F05189-2524 has a mass outflow rat…

Substantial evidence in the last few decades suggests that outflows from supermassive black holes (SMBH) may play a significant role in the evolution of galaxies.Large-scale outflows known as warm absorbers (WA) and fast disk winds known as ultra-fast outflows (UFO) are commonly found in the spectra of many Seyfert galaxies and quasars, and a correlation has been suggested between them. Recent detections of low ionization and low column density outflows, but with a high velocity comparable to UFOs, challenge such initial possible correlations. Observations of UFOs in AGN indicate that their en…

We present the spectral analysis of Chandra/HETGS and NuSTAR observations of the quasar PDS 456 from 2015, and XMM-Newton and NuSTAR archival data from 2013-2014, together with Chandra/HETGS data from 2003. We analyzed these three different epochs in a consistent way, looking for absorption features corresponding to highly ionized blueshifted absorption lines from H-like and He-like ions of iron (and nickel), as well as of other elements (O, Ne, Si, and S) in the soft band. We confirm the presence of a persistent ultra-fast outflow (UFO) with a velocity of v_out=-0.24 - -0.29c, previously dete…

Radio-loud quasars (RLQs) are known to produce excess X-ray emission, compared to radio-quiet quasars (RQQs) of the same luminosity, commonly attributed to jet-related emission. Recently, we found that the HeII EW and $α_{\rm{ox}}$ in RQQs are strongly correlated, which suggests that their extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) and X-ray emission mechanisms are tightly related. Using 48 RLQs, we show that steep-spectrum radio quasars (SSRQs) and low radio-luminosity ($L_{\rm R}$) flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) follow the $α_{\rm ox}$--HeII EW relation of RQQs. This suggests that the X-ray and EUV emis…
