The fraction of Compton thick sources is one of the main uncertainties left in understanding the AGN population. The Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) all-sky survey, for the first time gives us an unbiased sample of AGN for all but the most heavily absorbed sources (log NH > 25). Still, the BAT spectra (14 - 195 keV) are time-averaged over months of observations and therefore hard to compare with softer spectra from the Swift XRT or other missions. This makes it difficult to distinguish between Compton-thin and Compton-thick models. With Suzaku, we have obtained simultaneous hard (> 15 keV) and soft (0.3 - 10 keV) X-ray spectra for 5 Compton-thick candidate sources. We report on the spectra and a comparison with the BAT and earlier XMM observations. Based on both flux variability and spectral shape, we conclude that these hidden sources are not Compton-thick. We also report on a possible correlation between excess variance and Swift BAT luminosity from the 16 d binned light curves, which holds true for a sample of both absorbed (4 sources), unabsorbed (8 sources), and Compton thick (Circinus) AGN, but is weak in the 64 day binned BAT light curves.
We present the broadband (0.5-100 keV) spectra of three heavily obscured Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), NGC 1106, UGC 03752, and NGC 2788A, observed with Suzaku and Swift/Burst Alert Telescope (BAT). The targets are selected from the Swift/BAT 70-month catalog on the basis of high hardness ratio between above and below 10 keV, and their X-ray spectra are reported here for the first time. We apply three models, a conventional model utilizing an analytic reflection code and two Monte-Carlo based torus models with a doughnut-like geometry (MYTorus) and with a nearly spherical geometry (Ikeda toru…
From the spectral analysis of long Suzaku observations of five radio-loud AGNs we have been able to discover the presence of ultra-fast outflows with velocities ~0.1c in three of them, namely 3C 111, 3C 120 and 3C 390.3. They are consistent with being accretion disk winds/outflows. We also performed a follow-up on 3C 111 to monitor its outflow on ~7days time-scales and detected an anti-correlated variability of a possible relativistic emission line with respect to blue-shifted Fe K features, following a flux increase. This provides the first direct evidence for an accretion disk-wind connectio…
We apply XCLUMPY, an X-ray spectral model from a clumpy torus in an active galactic nucleus (AGN), to the broadband X-ray spectra of 10 obscured AGNs observed with both Suzaku and NuSTAR. The infrared spectra of these AGNs were analyzed with the CLUMPY code. Since XCLUMPY adopts the same clump distribution as that in the CLUMPY, we can directly compare the torus parameters obtained from the X-ray spectra and those from the infrared ones. The torus angular widths determined from the infrared spectra ($σ_{\mathrm{IR}}$) are systematically larger than those from the X-ray data ($σ_{\mathrm{X}}$);…
We select eight nearby AGNs which, based on previous work, appear to be Compton-thin in the line of sight. We model with MYTORUS their broadband X-ray spectra from 20 individual observations with $Suzaku$, accounting self-consistently for Fe K$α$ line emission, as well as direct and scattered continuum from matter with finite column density and solar Fe abundance. Our model configuration allows us to measure the global, out of the line of sight, equivalent hydrogen column density separately from that in the line of sight. For 5 out of 20 observations (in 3 AGNs) we find that the global column …
We present the results from broad-band X-ray spectral analysis of 3C 206 and PKS 0707-35 with Suzaku and Swift/BAT, two of the most luminous unobscured and obscured radio-loud active galactic nuclei with hard X-ray luminosities of 10^{45.5} erg s^{-1} and 10^{44.9} erg s^{-1} (14--195 keV), respectively. Based on the radio core luminosity, we estimate that the X-ray spectrum of 3C 206 contains a significant (~ 60% in the 14--195 keV band) contribution from the jet, while it is negligible in PKS 0707-35. We can successfully model the spectra with the jet component (for 3C 206), the transmitted …
We report the results obtained by a systematic, broadband (0.5--150 keV) X-ray spectral analysis of moderately obscured (Compton-thin; $22 \leq \log N_{\rm H} < 24$) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) observed with Suzaku and Swift/Burst Alert Telescope (BAT). Our sample consists of 45 local AGNs at $z<0.1$ with $\log L_{\rm 14-195\1mmkeV} > 42$ detected in the Swift/BAT 70-month survey, whose Suzaku archival data are available as of 2015 December. All spectra are uniformly fit with a baseline model composed of an absorbed cutoff power-law component, reflected emission accompanied by a narrow fluor…
We present a uniform broadband X-ray (0.5-100.0 keV) spectral analysis of 12 Swift/Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) selected Compton-thick ($\log N_{\mathrm{H}}/\mathrm{cm}^{-2} \geq 24$) Active Galactic Nuclei (CTAGNs) observed with Suzaku. The Suzaku data of 3 objects are published here for the first time. We fit the Suzaku and Swift spectra with models utilizing an analytic reflection code and those utilizing the Monte Carlo based model from an AGN torus by Ikeda et al. 2009. The main results are as follows. (1) The estimated intrinsic luminosity of a CTAGN strongly depends on the model; applyin…
We present the joint NuSTAR and XMM-Newton spectral analysis in the 0.6-70 keV band of three candidate Compton thick (CT-) AGN selected in the 100-month Swift-BAT catalog. These objects were previously classified as CT-AGNs based on low quality Swift-XRT and Swift-BAT data, and had soft photon indices (Gamma>2.2) that suggested a potential overestimation of the line of sight column density. Thanks to the high-quality NuSTAR and XMM-Newton data we were able to determine that in all three objects the photon index was significantly overestimated, and two out of three sources are reclassified from…
We report the results of Suzaku broad band X-ray observations of the two narrow-line radio galaxies (NLRGs), 3C 403 and IC 5063. Combined with the Swift/BAT spectra averaged for 58 months, we are able to accurately constrain their spectral properties over the 0.5--200 keV band. The spectra of both nuclei are well represented with an absorbed cut-off power law, an absorbed reflection component from cold matter with an iron-K emission line, and an unabsorbed soft component, which gives a firm upper limit for the scattered emission. The reflection strength normalized to the averaged BAT flux is R…
We address the very large diversity of the jet production efficiency in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) by using data on low redshift AGNs selected from the Swift/BAT catalog and having black hole (BH) masses larger than $10^{8.5}\,M_{\odot}$. Most of these AGNs accrete at intermediate rates and have bolometric luminosities dominated by mid-IR radiation. Our sample contains $14\%$ radio-loud (RL), $6\%$ radio-intermediate (RI), and $80\%$ radio-quiet (RQ) AGNs. All RL objects are found to have extended radio structures and most of them have classical FR II morphology. Converting their radio loud…
We propose new diagnostics that utilize the [O IV] 25.89 $μ$m and nuclear (subarcsecond scale) 12 $μ$m luminosity ratio for identifying whether an AGN is deeply `buried' in their surrounding material. Utilizing a sample of 16 absorbed AGNs at redshifts lower than 0.03 in the Swift/BAT catalog observed with Suzaku, we find that AGNs with small scattering fractions ($<$0.5%) tend to show weaker [O IV]-to-12 $μ$m luminosity ratios than the average of Seyfert 2 galaxies. This suggests that this ratio is a good indicator for identifying buried AGNs. Then, we apply this criterion to 23 local ultra/l…
We report on the spectral cross-calibration results of the Konus-Wind, the Suzaku/WAM, and the Swift/BAT instruments using simultaneously observed gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). This is the first attempt to use simultaneously observed GRBs as a spectral calibration source to understand systematic problems among the instruments. Based on these joint spectral fits, we find that 1) although a constant factor (a normalization factor) agrees within 20% among the instruments, the BAT constant factor shows a systematically smaller value by 10-20% compared to that of Konus-Wind, 2) there is a systematic tre…
We present the combined Chandra and Swift-BAT spectral analysis of nine low-redshift (z <= 0.10), candidate heavily obscured active galactic nuclei (AGN) selected from the Swift-BAT 150-month catalog. We located soft (1-10 keV) X-ray counterparts to these BAT sources and joint fit their spectra with physically motivated models. The spectral analysis in the 1-150 keV energy band determined that all sources are obscured, with a line-of-sight column density NH >= 10^22 cm^-2 at a 90% confidence level. Four of these sources show significant obscuration with NH >= 10^23 cm^-2 and two additional sour…
We systematically analyze the broadband (0.5--200 keV) X-ray spectra of hard X-ray ($>10$ keV) selected local low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs) observed with {\it Suzaku} and {\it Swift}/BAT. The sample consists of ten LLAGNs detected with {\it Swift}/BAT with intrinsic 14--195 keV luminosities smaller than $10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$ available in the {\it Suzaku} archive, covering a wide range of the Eddington ratio from $10^{-5}$ to $10^{-2}$. The overall spectra can be reproduced with an absorbed cut-off power law, often accompanied by reflection components from distant cold matter,…
The Swift/BAT nine-month survey observed 153 AGN, all with ultra-hard X-ray BAT fluxes in excess of 10^-11 erg cm^-2 s^-1 and an average redshift of 0.03. Among them, four of the most luminous BAT AGN (44.73 < Log L(BAT) < 45.31) were selected as targets of Suzaku follow-up observations: J2246.0+3941 (3C 452), J0407.4+0339 (3C 105), J0318.7+6828, and J0918.5+0425. The column density, scattered/reflected emission, the properties of the Fe K line, and a possible variability are fully analyzed. For the latter, the spectral properties from Chandra, XMM-Newton and Swift/XRT public observations were…
Obscured AGN are fundamental to understand the history of Super Massive Black Hole growth and their influence on galaxy formation. However, the Compton-thick AGN (NH>1e24 cm^-2) population is basically unconstrained, with less than few dozen confirmed Compton-thick AGN found and studied so far. A way to select heavily obscured AGN is to compare the X-ray emission below 10 keV (which is strongly depressed) with the emission from other bands less affected by the absorption, i.e. the IR band. To this end, we have cross-correlated the 2XMM catalogue with the IRAS Point Source catalogue and, by usi…
4U 1210-64 has been postulated to be a High-Mass X-ray Binary powered by the Be mechanism. X-ray observations with Suzaku, the ISS Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) and the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer Proportional Counter Array (PCA) and All Sky Monitor (ASM) provide detailed temporal and spectral information on this poorly understood source. Long term ASM and MAXI observations show distinct high and low states and the presence of a 6.7101 +/- 0.0005 day modulation, interpreted as the orbital period. Folded light curves reveal a sharp dip, interpreted as an eclipse. To determine the nature…
One of the most prominent, yet controversial associations derived from the ensemble of prompt-phase observations of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is the apparent correlation in the source frame between the peak energy Epeak) of the nu-F(nu) spectrum and the isotropic radiated energy, Eiso. Since most gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have Epeak above the energy range (15-150 keV) of the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) on Swift, determining accurate Epeak values for large numbers of Swift bursts has been difficult. However, by combining data from Swift/BAT and the Suzaku Wide-band All-Sky Monitor (WAM), which cove…

We present a detailed X-ray spectral analysis of a complete sample of hard X-ray selected AGN in the Northern Galactic Cap of the 58-month Swift Burst Alert Telescope (Swift/BAT) catalog, consisting of 100 AGN with b>50deg. This region has excellent potential for further study due to the availability of a wide range of archival multi-wavelength data, and we propose it as a low-redshift analog to the `deep fields' work on AGN at higher redshifts. We present distributions of luminosity, absorption, and other key quantities, from fitting new and archival X-ray data gathered from XMM-Newton, Swift…
We present torus modelling for the X-ray spectra of a nearby narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 1239 ($z=0.0199$), based on archival Suzaku, NuSTAR and Swift observations. Our model suggests very soft intrinsic power-law continuum emission of $Γ\approx2.57$ in 2019 and $Γ\approx2.98$ in 2007. By applying a correction factor to the unabsorbed X-ray luminosity, we find that Mrk 1239 is accreting near or around the Eddington limit. Our best-fit spectral model also suggests a torus with a column density of $\log(N_{\rm H, ave}/$cm$^{-2})=25.0\pm0.2$ and a high covering factor of $0.90$ in Mrk 1239, …
We present the discovery of correlations between the X-ray spectral (photon) index and mass accretion rate observed in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) 3C~454.3 and M87. We analyzed spectral transition episodes observed in these AGNs using Chandra, Swift, Suzaku, BeppoSAX, ASCA and RXTE data. We applied a scaling technique for a black hole (BH) mass evaluation which uses a correlation between the photon index (Gamma) and normalization of the seed component which is proportional to a disk mass accretion rate Mdot. We developed an analytical model that shows that Gamma of the BH emergent spectrum u…
We present the systematic broadband X-ray spectral analysis of 52 Compton-thick ($24 \leq \log N_{\mathrm{H}}^{\mathrm{LOS}}/\mathrm{cm}^{-2}$) active galactic nucleus (CTAGN) candidates selected by the Swift/BAT all-sky hard X-ray survey observed with Chandra, XMM--Newton, Swift/XRT, Suzaku, and NuSTAR. The XMM--Newton data of 10 objects and the NuSTAR data of 15 objects are published for the first time. We use an X-ray spectral model from a clumpy torus (XClumpy) to determine the torus properties. As a result, the hydrogen column density along the line of sight $N_{\mathrm{H}}^{\mathrm{LOS}}…
We present the study of a sample of seven "bare" active galactic nuclei (AGN) observed with Suzaku. We interpret the spectrum of these sources with a relativistic reflection component and we employ our model RELXILL_NK to test the Kerr nature of their supermassive black holes. We constrain the Johannsen deformation parameters $α_{13}$ and $α_{22}$, in which the Kerr metric is recovered when $α_{13} = α_{22} = 0$. All our measurements are consistent with the hypothesis that the spacetime geometry around these supermassive objects is described by the Kerr solution. For some sources, we obtain qu…
We present an analysis of a sample of 69 local obscured Swift/Burst Alert Telescope active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with X-ray spectra from NuSTAR and infrared (IR) spectral energy distributions from Herschel and WISE. We combine this X-ray and IR phenomenological modeling and find a significant correlation between reflected hard X-ray emission and IR AGN emission, with suggestive indications that this correlation may be stronger than the one between intrinsic hard X-ray and IR emissions. This relation between the IR and reflected X-ray emission suggests that both are the result of the processin…
An enigmatic group of objects, unabsorbed Seyfert 2s may have intrinsically weak broad line regions, obscuration in the line of sight to the BLR but not to the X-ray corona, or so much obscuration that the X-ray continuum is completely suppressed and the observed spectrum is actually scattered into the line of sight from nearby material. NGC 3660 has been shown to have weak broad optical/near infrared lines, no obscuration in the soft X-ray band, and no indication of "changing look" behavior. The only previous hard X-ray detection of this source by Beppo-SAX seemed to indicate that the source …
We have analyzed the broadband X-ray spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in two "non-merging" luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) UGC 2608 and NGC 5135, utilizing the data of NuSTAR, Suzaku, XMM-Newton, and Chandra. Applying the X-ray clumpy-torus model (XCLUMPY: Tanimoto et al. 2019), we find that both sources have similar spectra characterized by Compton-thick (CT) absorption ($N_{\rm H} \sim$ 5-7 $\times$ $10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$) and small torus angular width ($σ$ $<$ 20$^{\circ}$). The intrinsic 2-10 keV luminosities are $3.9^{+2.2}_{-1.7}$ $\times$ $10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$ (UGC 2608) and $2…
We present a long Suzaku observation of 3C 382. A Swift BAT spectrum from the 58-month survey is also analyzed, together with an archival XMM-Newton EPIC exposure. Our main result is the finding with Suzaku of a broad FeK line with a relativistic profile consistent with emission from an accretion disk at tens of gravitational radii from the central black hole. The XIS data indicate emission from highly ionized iron and allow us to set tight, albeit model-dependent, constraints on the inner and outer radii of the disk reflecting region, r_in~10r_g and r_out~20r_g, respectively, and on the disk …
Theory predicts that a supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) could be observed as a luminous active galactic nucleus (AGN) that periodically varies on the order of its orbital timescale. In X-rays, periodic variations could be caused by mechanisms including relativistic Doppler boosting and shocks. Here we present the first systematic search for periodic AGNs using $941$ hard X-ray light curves (14-195 keV) from the first 105 months of the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) survey (2004-2013). We do not find evidence for periodic AGNs in Swift-BAT, including the previously reported SMBHB candi…
Through an optical campaign performed at 4 telescopes located in the northern and the southern hemispheres, we have obtained optical spectroscopy for 75 counterparts of unclassified or poorly studied hard X-ray emitting objects detected with Swift/BAT and listed in the 54 month Palermo BAT catalogue. All these objects have also observations taken with Swift/XRT, ROSAT or Chandra satellites which allowed us to reduce the high energy error box and pinpoint the most likely optical counterpart/s. We find that 69 sources in our sample are Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs); of them, 35 are classified as…
We present broadband X-ray spectral study of two ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs), M81 X-6 and Holmberg IX X-1 based on Suzaku & XMM-Newton observations. We perform joint broadband spectral analysis of the brightest sources in the field, i.e. the two ULXs and the active galactic nucleus (AGN) in M81, and demonstrate that the X-ray spectra of the ULXs cut off at energies more than about 3keV with negligible contribution at high energies in the Suzaku HXD/PIN band. The 90% upper limit on the 10-30keV band luminosity of an underlying broadband power-law component is 3.5e38 ergs/s for M81 X-6 an…
We present an exhaustive methodology for fitting Compton-thick X-ray reprocessor models to obscured AGNs and for interpreting the results. We focus on the MYTORUS model but also utilize other models. We apply the techniques to Suzaku, BeppoSAX, and Swift BAT spectra of the Sy 2 galaxy NGC 4945, but the methods are applicable to other AGNs including Compton-thin sources. The models overcome a major restriction of disk-reflection models, namely the assumption of an infinite column density. Finite column-density models produce a richer variety of spectral shapes and characteristics, even for Comp…
The pulsar IGR J16393-4643 belongs to a class of highly absorbed supergiant HMXBs, characterised by very high column density of absorbing matter. We present the results of the simultaneous broad-band pulsation and spectrum analysis, from a 44 kilosec Suzaku observation of the source. The orbital intensity profile created with the SWIFT-BAT light-curve shows an indication of IGR J16393-4643 being an eclipsing system with a short eclipse semi-angle $θ_{E} \sim$ 17$^{\circ}$. For a supergiant companion star with a 20 R$_{\odot}$ radius, this implies an inclination of the orbital plane in the rang…
We use 3 years of data from the Swift/BAT survey to select a complete sample of X-ray blazars above 15 keV. This sample comprises 26 Flat-Spectrum Radio Quasars (FSRQs) and 12 BL Lac objects detected over a redshift range of 0.03<z<4.0. We use this sample to determine, for the first time in the 15--55 keV band, the evolution of blazars. We find that, contrary to the Seyfert-like AGNs detected by BAT, the population of blazars shows strong positive evolution. This evolution is comparable to the evolution of luminous optical QSOs and luminous X-ray selected AGNs. We also find evidence for an epo…
The origins of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) remain an open question. Several attempts have been made to cross-correlate the arrival directions of the UHECRs with catalogs of potential sources, but no definite conclusion has been reached. We report a Bayesian analysis of the 69 events from the Pierre Auger Observatory (PAO), that aims to determine the fraction of the UHECRs that originate from known AGNs in the Veron-Cety & Veron (VCV) catalog, as well as AGNs detected with the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (Swift-BAT), galaxies from the 2MASS Redshift Survey (2MRS), and an additional v…
The dusty torus plays a vital role in unifying active galactic nuclei (AGNs). However, the physical structure of the torus remains largely unclear. Here we present a systematical investigation of the torus mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopic feature, i.e., the 9.7 um silicate line, of $175$ AGNs selected from the Swift/BAT Spectroscopic Survey (BASS). Our sample is constructed to ensure that each of the $175$ AGNs has Spizter/IRS MIR, optical, and X-ray spectroscopic coverage. Therefore, we can simultaneously measure the silicate strength, optical emission lines, and X-ray properties (e.g., the c…
We present a broad-band analysis of deep Suzaku observations of nearby Seyfert 1 AGN: Fairall 9, MCG--6-30-15, NGC 3516, NGC 3783 and NGC 4051. The use of deep observations (exposures >200 ks) with high S/N allows the complex spectra of these objects to be examined in full, taking into account features such as the soft excess, reflection continuum and complex absorption components. After a self-consistent modelling of the broad-band data (0.6-100.0 keV, also making use of BAT data from Swift), the subtle curvature which may be introduced as a consequence of warm absorbers has a measured affect…

We construct full broadband models in an analysis of Suzaku observations of nearby Seyfert 1 AGN (z<0.2) with exposures >50ks and with greater than 30000 counts in order to study their iron line profiles. This results in a sample of 46 objects and 84 observations. After a full modelling of the broadband Suzaku and Swift-BAT data (0.6-100 keV) we find complex warm absorption is present in 59% of the objects in this sample which has a significant bearing upon the derived Fe K region parameters. Meanwhile 35% of the 46 objects require some degree of high column density partial coverer in order to…

We investigate the X-ray variability characteristics of hard X-ray selected AGNs (based on Swift/BAT data) in the soft X-ray band using the RXTE/ASM data. The uncertainties involved in the individual dwell measurements of ASM are critically examined and a method is developed to combine a large number of dwells with appropriate error propagation to derive long duration flux measurements (greater than 10 days). We also provide a general prescription to estimate the errors in variability derived from rms values from unequally spaced data. Though the derived variability for individual sources are …
We study the differences in X-ray properties of luminous radio galaxies and their radio-quiet counterparts. In order to avoid biases associated with the dependence of X-ray properties on the black hole mass and Eddington ratio, the radio-loud and radio-quiet objects are selected to cover similar ranges of these parameters. Our studies are based on the X-ray data from the Swift/BAT catalogue. We confirm previous results that radio galaxies are on average X-ray-louder than radio-quiet AGNs, but find that their spectral slopes are very similar. This suggests that in radio-loud and radio-quiet AGN…
The cosmic X-ray background (XRB) spectrum and active galaxy number counts encode essential information about the spectral evolution of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and have been successfully modeled by XRB synthesis models for many years. Recent measurements of the $8$--$24$ keV AGN number counts by NuSTAR and Swift-BAT are unable to be simultaneously described by existing XRB synthesis models, indicating a fundamental breakdown in our understanding of AGN evolution. Here we show that the $8$--$24$ keV AGN number counts can be successfully modeled with an XRB synthesis model in which the ref…
Hard X-ray ($\geq 10$ keV) observations of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) can shed light on some of the most obscured episodes of accretion onto supermassive black holes. The 70-month Swift/BAT all-sky survey, which probes the 14-195 keV energy range, has currently detected 838 AGN. We report here on the broad-band X-ray (0.3-150 keV) characteristics of these AGN, obtained by combining XMM-Newton, Swift/XRT, ASCA, Chandra, and Suzaku observations in the soft X-ray band ($\leq 10$ keV) with 70-month averaged Swift/BAT data. The non-blazar AGN of our sample are almost equally divided into unobscur…
Using a sample of 208 broad-line active galactic nuclei (AGNs) from Swift/BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey in ultra-hard X-ray band ($14-195$ keV), the hot corona properties are investigated, i.e. the fraction of gravitational energy dissipated in the hot corona and the hard X-ray photon index. The bolometric luminosity, \lb, is calculated from host-corrected luminosity at 5100 Å. Virial supermassive black hole masses (SMBH, \mbh) are calculated from the $\rm Hβ$ line width and the corresponding broad line region size-luminosity empirical relation at 5100 Å. We find a strong anti-correlation betwe…
We apply a new X-ray clumpy torus model called XCLUMPY (Tanimoto et al. 2019), where the clump distribution is assumed to be the same as in the infrared clumpy torus model (CLUMPY) by Nenkova et al. 2008, to the broadband X-ray spectra of type-1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) for the first time. We analyze the archival data of IC 4329A and NGC 7469 observed with NuSTAR/Suzaku and NuSTAR/XMM-Newton, respectively, whose infrared spectra were studied with CLUMPY by Ichikawa et al. 2015 and optical extinctions ($A_{\rm V}$) of the tori were estimated. We consider two models, invoking (Model 1) a re…
We study the correlation between the [O III]$λ5007$ and X-ray luminosities of local Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), using a complete, hard X-ray ($>10$ keV) selected sample in the Swift/BAT 9-month catalog. From our optical spectroscopic observations at the South African Astronomical Observatory and the literature, a catalog of [O III]$λ5007$ line flux for all 103 AGNs at Galactic latitudes of $|b|>15^\circ$ is complied. Significant correlations with intrinsic X-ray luminosity ($L_{\rm X}$) are found both for observed ($L_{\rm [O~III]}$) and extinction-corrected ($L_{\rm [O~III]}^{\rm cor}$) lu…
The super-massive black-holes in the centers of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) are surrounded by obscuring matter that can block the nuclear radiation. Depending on the amount of blocked radiation, the flux from the AGN can be too faint to be detected by currently flying hard X-ray (above 15 keV) missions. At these energies only ~1% of the intensity of the Cosmic X-ray Background (CXB) can be resolved into point-like sources that are AGNs. In this work we address the question of the undetected sources contributing to the CXB with a very sensitive and new hard X-ray survey: the SIX survey that i…
The Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) survey of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is providing an unprecedented view of local AGNs (<z> = 0.03) and their host galaxy properties. In this paper, we present an analysis of the optical spectra of a sample of 64 AGNs from the 9-month survey, detected solely based on their 14-195 keV flux. Our analysis includes both archived spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and our own observations from the 2.1-m Kitt Peak National Observatory telescope. Among our results, we include line ratio classifications utilizing standard emission line diagnostic plots, [O…
Using the latest 70 month Swift-BAT catalog we examined hard X-ray selected Seyfert I galaxies which are relatively little known and little studied, and yet potentially promising to test the ionized relativistic reflection model. From this list we chose 13 sources which have been observed by XMM-Newton for less than 20 ks, in order to explore the broad band soft to hard X-ray properties with the analysis of combined XMM-Newton and Swift data. Out of these we found seven sources which exhibit potentially promising features of the relativistic disc reflection, such as a strong soft excess, a lar…
We present a broadband (~0.5-79 keV) spectral and temporal analysis of multiple NuSTAR observations combined with archival Suzaku and Chandra data of NGC4945, the brightest extragalactic source at 100 keV. We observe hard X-ray (> 10 keV) flux and spectral variability, with flux variations of a factor 2 on timescales of 20 ksec. A variable primary continuum dominates the high energy spectrum (>10 keV) in all the states, while the reflected/scattered flux which dominates at E< 10 keV stays approximately constant. From modelling the complex reflection/transmission spectrum we derive a Compton de…
The currents carried by the jets of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) can be probed using maps of the Faraday rotation measure (RM), since a jet current will be accompanied by a toroidal magnetic (B) field, which will give rise to a systematic change in the RM across the jet. The aim of this study is to identify new AGNs displaying statistically significant transverse RM gradients across their parsec-scale jets, and to look for overall patterns in the implied directions for the toroidal B-field components and jet currents. We have carried out new analyses of Faraday RM maps derived from previously…
Resonant absorption cyclotron features are a key diagnostic tool to directly measure the strength of the magnetic field of accreting neutron stars. However, typical values for cyclotron features lie in the high-energy part of the spectrum between 20 keV and 50 keV, where detection is often damped by the low statistics from single pointed observations. We show that long-term monitoring campaign performed with Swift-BAT of persistently, but faint, accreting high-mass X-ray binaries is able to reveal in their spectra the presence of cyclotron features. We extracted the average Swift-BAT 15-150 ke…
Recent evidence for a strong 'hard excess' of flux at energies > 20 keV in some Suzaku observations of type 1 Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) has motivated an exploratory study of the phenomenon in the local type 1 AGN population. We have selected all type 1 AGN in the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) 58-month catalog and cross-correlated them with the holdings of the Suzaku public archive. We find the hard excess phenomenon to be a ubiquitous property of type 1 AGN. Taken together, the spectral hardness and equivalent width of Fe K alpha emission are consistent with reprocessing by an ensemble …
