In this paper, we show that a rigidly rotating string can extract the rotational energy from a rotating black hole. We consider Nambu-Goto strings stationary with respect to a corotating Killing vector with an uniform angular velocity $ω$ in the Kerr spacetime. We show that a necessary condition of the energy-extraction process is that an effective horizon on the string world sheet, which corresponds to the inner light surface, is inside the ergosphere of the Kerr black hole and the angular velocity $ω$ is less than that of the black hole $Ω_\mathrm{h}$. Furthermore, we discuss global configurations of such strings in both of a slow-rotation limit and the extremal Kerr case.
We analyze rigidly rotating Nambu--Goto strings in the Kerr spacetime, particularly focusing on the strings sticking in the horizon. From the regularity on the horizon, we find the condition for sticking in the horizon, which is consistent with the second law of the black hole thermodynamics. Energy extraction through the sticking string from a Kerr black hole occurs. We obtain the maximum value of the luminosity of the energy extraction.
We consider rigidly rotating states in thermal equilibrium on static spherically symmetric spacetimes. Using the Maxwell-Juttner equilibrium distribution function, onstructed as a solution of the relativistic Boltzmann equation, the equilibrium particle flow four-vector, stress-energy tensor and the transport coefficients in the Marle model are computed. Their properties are discussed in view of the topology of the speed-of-light surface induced by the rotation for two classes of spacetimes: maximally symmetric (Minkowski, de Sitter and anti-de Sitter) and charged (Reissner-Nordstrom) black-ho…
We revisit secular stability against quasi-radial collapse for rigidly rotating supermassive stars (SMSs) in general relativity. We suppose that the SMSs are in a nuclear-burning phase and can be modeled by polytropic equations of state with the polytropic index $n_p$ slightly smaller than $3$. The stability is determined in terms of the turning-point method. We find a fitting formula of the stability condition for the plausible range of $n_p$ ($2.95 \alt n_p \alt 3$) for SMSs. This condition reconfirms that, while non-rotating SMSs with mass $\sim 10^5M_\odot$--$10^6M_\odot$ may undergo a gen…
We study the observational properties of a class of exact solutions of Einstein's field equations describing stationary, axially symmetric, rigidly rotating dust (i.e. non interacting particles). We ask the question whether such solutions can describe astrophysical rotating dark matter clouds near the center of galaxies and we probe the possibility that they may constitute an alternative to supermassive black holes at the center of galaxies. We show that light emission from accretion disks made of ordinary baryonic matter in this space-time has several differences with respect to the emission …
A double new class of solutions to the general relativity field equations describing interior spacetimes sourced by stationary cylindrical anisotropic fluids with principal stress directed along the symmetry axis is displayed. These solutions are required to satisfy regularity and junction conditions so that they can be possibly used to represent rotating astrophysical objects. Mathematical and physical properties are analyzed. The spacetime two independent parameters are physically interpreted, and they are shown to define two different solution classes together with stating the latters' prop…
We investigate the three-dimensional, general relativistic Poynting-Robertson effect in the case of rigidly rotating spherical source which emits radiation radially in the local comoving frame. Such radiation field is meant to approximate the field produced by the surface of a rotating neutron star, or by the central radiating hot corona of accreting black holes; it extends the purely radial radiation field that we considered in a previous study. Its angular momentum is expressed in terms of the rotation frequency and radius of the emitting source. For the background we adopt a Kerr spacetime …
Cataldo has found all rigidly rotating self-gravitating perfect fluid solutions in 2+1 dimensions with a negative cosmological constant $Λ$, for a density that is specified a priori as a function of a certain radial coordinate. We rewrite these solutions in standard polar-radial coordinates, for an arbitrary barotropic equation of state $p(ρ)$. For any given equation of state, we find the two-parameter family of solutions with a regular centre and finite total mass $M$ and angular momentum $J$ (rigidly rotating stars). For analytic equations of state, the solution is analytic except at the sur…

Invariant characterization of the Kerr spacetime: Locating the horizon and measuring the mass and spin of rotating black holes using curvature invariants
The Blandford-Znajek monopole is a conjectured solution of force-free electrodynamics in the vicinity of a slowly rotating Kerr black hole, supposedly defined as a perturbation in small angular momentum. It is used to argue for the extraction of energy from rotating black holes by the Blandford-Znajek process. We set up a careful analysis of the perturbative definition of the Blandford-Znajek monopole, showing in particular that the regime in which it is defined allows to use the technique of matched asymptotic expansions. Our conclusion is that the Blandford-Znajek monopole, as it is defined,…
We find that the Kerr-(Newman)-AdS$_4$ black hole will be shadowless if its rotation parameter is larger than a critical value and the shadowless-ness may be related to the appearance of the null hypersurface caustics (NHC) both inside the Cauchy horizon and outside the event horizon for the black hole with the rotation parameter beyond the critical value. Our studies also further confirm that whether an ultraspinning black hole is super-entropic or not is unrelated to the existence of the NHC outside the event horizon.
We study the accretion process in the thin disk around a rotating Kerr-like black hole in Einstein-bumblebee gravity model where Lorentz symmetry is spontaneously broken once a vector field acquires a vacuum expectation value. In the present paper we obtain the energy flux, the emission spectrum and accretion efficiency from the accretion disks around the rotating Kerr-like black hole, and we compare them to the general Kerr case. These significant features in the mass accretion process may provide a possibility to test whether the Lorentz symmetry is spontaneously broken or not in the Einstei…
Combining with the small-large black hole phase transition, the thermodynamic geometry has been well applied to study the microstructure for the charged AdS black hole. In this paper, we extend the geometric approach to the rotating Kerr-AdS black hole and aim to develop a general approach for the Kerr-AdS black hole. Treating the entropy and pressure as the fluctuation coordinates, we construct the Ruppeiner geometry for the Kerr-AdS black hole by making the use of the Christodoulou-Ruffini-like squared-mass formula, which is quite different from the charged case. Employing the empirical obse…
The Brown-York quasi-local energy of a rotating black hole described by the Kerr metric and enclosed by a fixed-radius surface is calculated by direct computation. No special assumptions on the angular momentum or the radial coordinate in Boyer-Lindquist coordinates were placed. The arbitrary reference term has been set to zero. The result may be relevant for applications in astrophysics, for modeling elementary particles or for extensions of the framework of quasi-local quantities. An analytic expression in terms of incomplete elliptic integrals is given.
Classical Censorship permits AdS$_5$-Kerr black holes with arbitrarily large angular momenta per unit mass, which does not seem reasonable from a holographic point of view. However, it has been shown that, when these black holes are embedded in string theory, their angular momentum per unit mass is in fact bounded by $2\sqrt{2}L$, where $L$ is the asymptotic curvature scale. One might suppose that the most rapidly rotating AdS$_5$-Kerr black holes, with angular momentum per unit mass close to this bound, might be unstable, for example, to a superradiant instability. We show that this is not al…
