We present an algorithm for obtaining the post-Newtonian expansion of the asymptotically flat solution to the Einstein-Maxwell equations describing a rigidly rotating disc of dust with a constant specific charge. Explicit analytic expressions are calculated up to the eighth order. The results are used for a physical discussion of the extreme relativistic limiting cases. We identify strong evidence for a transition to an extreme Kerr-Newman black hole.
Using the analytic, global solution for the rigidly rotating disc of dust as a starting point, an iteration scheme is presented for the calculation of an arbitrary coefficient in the post-Newtonian (PN) approximation of this solution. The coefficients were explicitly calculated up to the 12th PN level and are listed in this paper up to the 4th PN level. The convergence of the series is discussed and the approximation is found to be reliable even in highly relativistic cases. Finally, the ergospheres are calculated at increasing orders of the approximation and for increasingly relativistic situ…
We determine the onset point of secular instability for the nonaxisymmetric bar mode in rigidly rotating equilibrium configurations in the Post-Newtonian approximation, in order to apply it to neutron stars. The treatment is based on a precedent Newtonian analytic energy variational method which we have extended to the Post-Newtonian case. This method, based upon Landau's theory of second-order phase transitions, provides the critical value of the ellipsoid polar eccentricity e at the onset of viscosity-driven instability and it is valid for any equation of state. The extension of this method …
Many cosmological observations call for the existence of dark matter. The most direct evidence for dark matter is inferred from the measured flatness of galactic rotation curves. The latter is based on Newtonian gravity. Alternative approaches to the rotation curve problem by means of general relativity have recently been put forward. The class of models of interest is a subset of the axially symmetric and stationary solutions of Einstein's equations with rotating dust. As a step toward the understanding of general relativistic galaxy models, we analyse rigidly as well as non-rigidly rotating …
The exact global solution of the Einstein equations [Neugebauer & Meinel, Phys. Rev. Lett. 75 (1995) 3046] describing a rigidly rotating, self-gravitating disk is discussed. The underlying matter model is a perfect fluid in the limit of vanishing pressure. The solution represents the general-relativistic analogue of the classical Maclaurin disk. It was derived by applying solution techniques from soliton theory to the axisymmetric, stationary vacuum Einstein equations. In contrast to the Newtonian solution, there exists an upper limit for the total mass of the disk - if the angular momentum is…
Stationary, axisymmetric and asymptotically flat spacetimes of dust of which trajectories are integral curves of the time translation Killing vector are investigated. The flow has no Newtonian limit. Asymptotic flatness implies the existence of singularities of the curvature scalar that are distributions and that are not isolated from regularity regions of the flow. The singularities are closely related to the presence of additional stresses that contribute negative active mass to the total (Komar) mass, which is zero for asymptotically flat spacetimes. Several families of solutions are constr…
The missing of a Keplerian fall-off in the observed galaxy rotation curves represents classical evidence for the existence of dark matter on galactic scales. There has been some recent activity concerning the potential of modelling galactic systems with the help of general relativity. This was motivated by claims that by the use of full general relativity dark matter could be made superfluous. Here we focus on possible axisymmetric and stationary solutions of Einstein's equations with rotating dust. After a short review of the current debate we pursue the idea of approaching such relativistic …
A stationary observer in the Kerr spacetime has zero angular momentum if his/her angular velocity $ω$ has a particular value, which depends on the position of the observer. Worldlines of such zero angular momentum observers (ZAMOs) with the same value of the angular velocity $ω$ form a three dimensional surface, which has the property that the Killing vectors generating time translation and rotation are tangent to it. We call such a surface a rigidly rotating ZAMO surface. This definition allows a natural generalization to the surfaces inside the black hole, where ZAMO's trajectories formally …
We present the results of numerical time evolutions of the linearised perturbations of rapidly and rigidly rotating Newtonian polytropes while making the Cowling approximation. The evolution code runs stably for hundreds of stellar rotations, allowing us to compare our results with previously published eigenmode calculations, for instance the f-mode calculations of Ipser & Lindblom, and the r-mode calculations of Karino et al. The mode frequencies were found to be in agreement within the expected accuracy. We have also examined the inertial modes recently computed by Lockitch & Friedman, and w…
Boundary conditions and gluing conditions for open strings and D-branes in the $SL(2,R)$ WZWN model, corresponding to $AdS_3$, are discussed. Some boundary conditions and gluing conditions previously considered in the literature are shown to be incompatible with the variation principle. We then consider open string boundary conditions corresponding to a certain {\it field-dependent} gluing condition. This allows us to consider open strings with constant energy and angular momentum. Classically, these open strings naturally generalize the open strings in flat Minkowski space. For rigidly rotati…
Investigating the rigidly rotating disc of dust with constant specific charge, we find that it leads to an extreme Kerr-Newman black hole in the ultra-relativistic limit. A necessary and sufficient condition for a black hole limit is, that the electric potential in the co-rotating frame is constant on the disc. In that case certain other relations follow. These relations are reviewed with a highly accurate post-Newtonian expansion. Remarkably it is possible to survey the leading order behaviour close to the black hole limit with the post-Newtonian expansion. We find that the disc solution clos…
We discuss inelastic collisions of two rotating disks by using the conservation laws for baryonic mass and angular momentum. In particular, we formulate conditions for the formation of a new disk after the collision and calculate the total energy loss to obtain upper limits for the emitted gravitational energy.
In this work we study the properties of rigidly rotating neutral dust solutions in general relativity. This class of solutions gained relevance recently due to applications to the dynamics of spiral galaxies. We show that this class could be interpreted as a rigid body in general relativity and we analyze the different properties respect to the rigidly rotating disk in special relativity: for example, the general relativistic counterpart shows no Doppler effect for a light signal emitted and received from any two points at rest respect to the rigid body. This effect can be important to test th…
We consider rigidly rotating states in thermal equilibrium on static spherically symmetric spacetimes. Using the Maxwell-Juttner equilibrium distribution function, onstructed as a solution of the relativistic Boltzmann equation, the equilibrium particle flow four-vector, stress-energy tensor and the transport coefficients in the Marle model are computed. Their properties are discussed in view of the topology of the speed-of-light surface induced by the rotation for two classes of spacetimes: maximally symmetric (Minkowski, de Sitter and anti-de Sitter) and charged (Reissner-Nordstrom) black-ho…
In this paper, we show that a rigidly rotating string can extract the rotational energy from a rotating black hole. We consider Nambu-Goto strings stationary with respect to a corotating Killing vector with an uniform angular velocity $ω$ in the Kerr spacetime. We show that a necessary condition of the energy-extraction process is that an effective horizon on the string world sheet, which corresponds to the inner light surface, is inside the ergosphere of the Kerr black hole and the angular velocity $ω$ is less than that of the black hole $Ω_\mathrm{h}$. Furthermore, we discuss global configur…
We perform some numerical study of the secular triaxial instability of rigidly rotating homogeneous fluid bodies in general relativity. In the Newtonian limit, this instability arises at the bifurcation point between the Maclaurin and Jacobi sequences. It can be driven in astrophysical systems by viscous dissipation. We locate the onset of instability along several constant baryon mass sequences of uniformly rotating axisymmetric bodies for compaction parameter $M/R = 0-0.275$. We find that general relativity weakens the Jacobi like bar mode instability, but the stabilizing effect is not very …
The Earth's geoid is one of the most essential and fundamental concepts to provide a gravity field-related height reference in geodesy and associated sciences. To keep up with the ever-increasing experimental capabilities and to consistently interpret high-precision measurements without any doubt, a relativistic treatment of geodetic notions (including the geoid) within Einstein's theory of General Relativity is inevitable. Building on the theoretical construction of isochronometric surfaces and the so-called redshift potential for clock comparison, we define a relativistic gravity potential a…
It is usually believed that the Cowling approximation can give satisfactory solutions if the stars %are highly compressible have soft equations of state and/or if the strongly general relativistic stars are treated in the case of rigid rotation. Since, however, there have been no systematic studies about the accuracy of the Cowling approximation for differentially rotating compressible stars, we investigate eigenfrequencies and eigenfunctions of the oscillation modes in {\it rapidly} and {\it differentially} rotating compressible stars by employing the exact method including full-perturbations…
The gravitational back-reaction on a certain type of rigidly-rotating cosmic string loop, first discovered by Allen, Casper and Ottewill, is studied at the level of the weak-field approximation. The near-field metric perturbations are calculated and used to construct the self-acceleration vector of the loop. Although the acceleration vector is divergent at the two kink points on the loop, its net effect on the trajectory over a single oscillation period turns out to be finite. The net back-reaction on the loop over a single period is calculated using a method due to Quashnock and Spergel, and …
We revisit secular stability against quasi-radial collapse for rigidly rotating supermassive stars (SMSs) in general relativity. We suppose that the SMSs are in a nuclear-burning phase and can be modeled by polytropic equations of state with the polytropic index $n_p$ slightly smaller than $3$. The stability is determined in terms of the turning-point method. We find a fitting formula of the stability condition for the plausible range of $n_p$ ($2.95 \alt n_p \alt 3$) for SMSs. This condition reconfirms that, while non-rotating SMSs with mass $\sim 10^5M_\odot$--$10^6M_\odot$ may undergo a gen…
Bootstrapped Newtonian gravity was developed with the purpose of estimating the impact of quantum physics in the nonlinear regime of the gravitational interaction, akin to corpuscular models of black holes and inflation. In this work, we set the ground for extending the bootstrapped Newtonian picture to cosmological spaces. We further discuss how such models of quantum cosmology can lead to a natural solution of the cosmological constant problem.
We construct analytic models of incompressible, rigidly rotating stars in PN gravity and study their stability against nonaxisymmetric Jacobi-like bar modes. PN configurations are modeled by homogeneous triaxial ellipsoids and the metric is obtained as a solution of Einstein's equations in 3+1 ADM form. We use an approximate subset of the equations well-suited to numerical integration for strong field, 3D configurations in quasi--equilibrium. These equations are exact at PN order, and admit an analytic solution for homogeneous ellipsoids. In this paper we present this solution, as well as anal…
In the present work we find novel Newtonian gravity models in three spacetime dimensions. We first present a Maxwellian version of the extended Newtonian gravity, which is obtained as the non-relativistic limit of a particular $U(1)$-enlargement of an enhanced Maxwell Chern-Simons gravity. We show that the extended Newtonian gravity appears as a particular sub-case. Then, the introduction of a cosmological constant to the Maxwellian extended Newtonian theory is also explored. To this purpose, we consider the non-relativistic limit of an enlarged symmetry. An alternative method to obtain our re…
We discuss in detail the weak field limit of f(R,G) gravity taking into account analytic functions of the Ricci scalar R and the Gauss-Bonnet invariant G. Specifically, we develop, in metric formalism, the Newtonian, Post Newtonian and Parameterized Post Newtonian limits starting from general f(R, G) Lagrangian. The special cases of f(R) and f(G) gravities are considered. In the case of the Newtonian limit of f(R, G) gravity, a general solution in terms of Green's functions is achieved.
The Parametrized Post-Newtonian expansion of gravitational theories with a scalar field coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant is performed and confrontation of such theories with Solar system experiments is discussed.
We discuss various aspects of the post-Newtonian approximation in general relativity. After presenting the foundation based on the Newtonian limit, we use the (3+1) formalism to formulate the post-Newtonian approximation for the perfect fluid. As an application we show the method for constructing the equilibrium configuration of nonaxisymmetric uniformly rotating fluid. We also discuss the gravitational waves including tail from post-Newtonian systems.
We discuss an effective theory for the quantum static gravitational potential in spherical symmetry up to the first post-Newtonian correction. We build a suitable Lagrangian from the weak field limit of the Einstein-Hilbert action coupled to pressureless matter. Classical solutions of the field equation lead to the correct post-Newtonian expansion. Furthermore, we portray the Newtonian results in a quantum framework by means of a coherent quantum state, which is properly corrected to accomodate post-Newtonian corrections. These considerations provide a link between the corpuscular model of Dva…
We analyze the rotation curves of 10 spiral galaxies with a newtonian potential corrected with an extra logarithmic term, using a disc modelization for the spiral galaxies. There is a new constant associated with the extra term in the potential. The rotation curve of the chosen sample of spiral galaxies is well reproduced for a given range of the new constant. It is argued that this correction can have its origin from string configurations. The compatibility of this correction with local physics is discussed.
The post-Newtonian approximation is useful to discuss gravitational waveforms for binary inspirals. In this note, for retrograde circular orbits in the equatorial plane, we discuss the region of validity of the post-Newtonian approximation by using the gravitational energy flux derived numerically and analytically in the black hole perturbation approach. It is found that the edge of the allowable region behaves quite intricately, including prograde orbits even if we treat higher post-Newtonian orders.
We present two of our efforts directed toward the numerical analysis of neutron star mergers, which are the most plausible sources for gravitational wave detectors that should begin operating in the near future. First we present Newtonian 3D simulations including radiation reaction (2.5PN) effects. We discuss the gravitational wave signals and luminosity from the merger with/without radiation reaction effects. Second we present the matching problem between post-Newtonian formulations and general relativity in numerical treatments. We prepare a spherical, static neutron star in a post-Newtonian…
We estimate virial masses of galaxy clusters using the parametrized post-Newtonian (PPN) virial theorem. Also, we show explicitly that post-Newtonian corrections can not address the mass discrepancy in the galaxy clusters.
Exact stationary axially symmetric solutions of the 4D Einstein equations with corotating pressureless perfect fluid sources are studied. A particular solution with approximately flat rotation curve is discussed in some detail. We find that simple Newtonian arguments overestimate the amount of matter needed to explain these curves by more than 30%. The crucial insight gained by this model is that the Newtonian approximation breaks down globally, even though it is valid locally everywhere. No conflict with solar system tests arises.
A rigidly rotating incompressible perfect fluid solution of Einstein's gravitational equations is discussed. The Petrov type is D, and the metric admits a four-parameter isometry group. The Gaussian curvature of the constant-pressure surfaces is positive and they have two ring-shaped cusps.
We calculate the potential contributions of the motion of binary mass systems in gravity to the fifth post--Newtonian order ab initio using coupling and velocity expansions within an effective field theory approach based on Feynman amplitudes starting with harmonic coordinates and using dimensional regularization. Furthermore, the singular and logarithmic tail contributions are calculated. We also consider the non--local tail contributions. Further steps towards the complete calculation are discussed and first comparisons are given to results in the literature.
The set up of matched filters for the detection of gravitational waves from in-spiraling compact binaries is usually carried out using the restricted post-Newtonian approximation: the filter phase is modelled including post-Newtonian corrections, whereas the amplitude is retained at the Newtonian order. Here we investigate the effects of the introduction of post-Newtonian corrections also to the amplitude and we discuss some of the implications for signal detection and parameter estimation.
Dust configurations play an important role in astrophysics and are the simplest models for rotating bodies. The physical properties of the general--relativistic global solution for the rigidly rotating disk of dust, which has been found recently as the solution of a boundary value problem, are discussed.
Expression for second post-Newtonian level gravitational deflection angle of massive particles is obtained in a model independent framework. Several of its important implications including the possibility of testing gravitational theories at that level are discussed.
We discuss the post-Newtonian limit of multimetric gravity theories with $N \geq 2$ metric tensors and a corresponding number of standard model copies, and construct an extension of the parameterized post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism. This extended formalism allows a characterization of multimetric gravity theories by a set of constant parameters. The multimetric PPN parameters we derive are a superset of the standard PPN parameters, which have been measured using high-precision experiments in the solar system. We apply our formalism to a class of theories which we previously discussed in the con…
Pseudo-Newtonian Potential has always been a useful tool to discuss the motion of a particle in space-time to avoid the tedious and nearly impossible nonlinear computations coming from the field equations of general relativity. Mukhopadhyay, in 2002, has introduced such a pseudo-Newtonian potential for rotating Kerr black hole which is efficient enough to replicate the scenario of the classical mechanics. But there was no such model to explain the dark energy realm. In 2016 S Ghosh introduced a Lagrangian for such rotating black hole embedded in quintessence. in this article we obtained a pseu…
We present further evidence that the second post-Newtonian (pN) approximation to the gravitational waves emitted by inspiraling compact binaries is sufficient for the detection of these systems. This is established by comparing the 2-pN wave forms to signals calculated from black hole perturbation theory. Results are presented for different detector noise curves. We also discuss the validity of this type of analysis.
Recent general-relativistic extensions of Newtonian rotation laws for self-gravitating stationary fluids allow one to rederive, in the first post-Newtonian approximation, the well known geometric dragging of frames, and two new weak-field effects within rotating tori. These are the recently discovered anti-dragging and a new effect that measures the deviation from the Keplerian motion and/or the contribution of the fluids selfgravity. They can be applied to the study of the existence of the (post-)Newtonian limits of solutions and in investigations of inequalities relating parameters of rotati…
A general theory of frames of reference proposed in a preceding publication is considered here in the framework of the post-Newtonian approximation, assuming that the frame of reference is centered on a time-like geodesic. The problem of taking into account the rotation of the frame of reference, which is usually ignored or incorrectly oversimplified, is here discussed in detail and solved.
We study the parameterized post-Newtonian approximation in teleparallel model of gravity with a scalar field. The scalar field is non-minimally coupled to the scalar torsion as well as to the boundary term introduced in [1]. We show that, in contrast to the case where the scalar field is only coupled to the scalar torsion, the presence of the new coupling affects the parameterized post-Newtonian parameters. These parameters for different situations are obtained and discussed.
Using the latest most accurate values of post-Newtonian parameters $γ$ and $β$ obtained by MESSENGER we impose restrictions on the recently proposed hybrid f(R)-gravity model in its scalar-tensor representation. We show that the presence of a light scalar field in this theory does not contradict the experimental data based not only on the $ γ$ parameter (as was shown earlier), but also on all other PPN parameters. The application of parameterized post-Newtonian formalism to gravitational theories with massive fields is also discussed.
Using the Newtonian approximation, we study rotating compact bosonic objects. The equations which describe stationary states with non-zero angular momentum are constructed and some numerical results are presented as examples. Limits on the applicability of the Newtonian approximation are discussed.
With continuous advances in technology, future satellite gradiometry missions will be capable of performing precision relativistic experiments and imposing constraints on modern gravity theories. To this end, the full first-order post-Newtonian tidal tensor under inertially guided and Earth-pointing local frames along post-Newtonian orbits is worked out. The physical picture behind the "Mashhoon-Theiss anomaly" is explained at the post-Newtonian level. The relativistic precession of the local frame with respect to the sidereal frame will produce modulations of Newtonian tidal forces along cert…
We derive explicit Lorentz-invariant solution of the Einstein and null geodesic equations for data processing of the time delay and ranging experiments in gravitational field of moving gravitating bodies of the solar system - the Sun and major planets. We discuss general-relativistic interpretation of these experiments and the limitations imposed by motion of the massive bodies on measurement of the parameters gamma_{PPN}, beta_{PPN} and delta_{PPN} of the parameterized post-Newtonian formalism.
Gravitational waveforms which describe the inspiral, merger and ringdown of coalescing binaries are usually constructed by synthesising information from perturbative descriptions, in particular post-Newtonian theory and black-hole perturbation theory, with numerical solutions of the full Einstein equations. In this paper we discuss the "glueing" of numerical and post-Newtonian waveforms to produce hybrid waveforms which include subdominant spherical harmonics ("higher order modes"), and focus in particular on the process of consistently aligning the waveforms, which requires a comparison of bo…
We introduce a method to obtain self-consistent, axially symmetric, thin disklike stellar models in the first post-Newtonian (1PN) approximation. The models obtained are fully analytical and corresponds to the post-Newtonian generalizations of classical ones. By introducing in the field equations provided by the 1PN approximation a known distribution function (DF) corresponding to a Newtonian model, two fundamental equations determining the 1PN corrections are obtained, which are solved using the Hunter method. The rotation curves of the 1PN-corrected models differs from the classical ones and…
The two independent ``plus" and ``cross" polarization waveforms associated with the gravitational waves emitted by inspiralling, non-spinning, compact binaries are presented, ready for use in the data analysis of signals received by future laser interferometer gravitational-wave detectors such as LIGO and VIRGO. The computation is based on a recently derived expression of the gravitational field at the second-post-Newtonian approximation of general relativity beyond the dominant (Newtonian) quadrupolar field. The use of these theoretical waveforms to make measurements of astrophysical paramete…
A general analytic procedure is developed to deal with the Newtonian limit of $f(R)$ gravity. A discussion comparing the Newtonian and the post-Newtonian limit of these models is proposed in order to point out the differences between the two approaches. We calculate the post-Newtonian parameters of such theories without any redefinition of the degrees of freedom, in particular, without adopting some scalar fields and without any change from Jordan to Einstein frame. Considering the Taylor expansion of a generic $f(R)$ theory, it is possible to obtain general solutions in term of the metric coe…
We consider the post-Newtonian limit of a general class of bimetric theories of gravity, in which both metrics are dynamical. The established parameterised post-Newtonian approach is followed as closely as possible, although new potentials are found that do not exist within the standard frame-work. It is found that these theories can evade solar system tests of post-Newtonian gravity remarkably well. We show that perturbations about Minkowski space in these theories contain both massless and massive degrees of freedom, and that in general there are two different types of massive mode, each wit…
We determine the full post-Newtonian limit of theories of gravity that extend general relativity by replacing the Ricci scalar, R, in the generating Lagrangian by some analytic function, f(R). We restrict ourselves to theories that admit Minkowski space as a suitable background, and perform a perturbative expansion in the manner prescribed by the parameterised post-Newtonian formalism. Extra potentials are found to be present that are not accounted for in the usual treatment, and a discussion is provided on how they may be used to observationally distinguished these theories from general relat…
The generation of gravitational waves from a post-Newtonian source endowed with a quantum spin, modeled by the Weyssenhoff fluid, is investigated in the context of Einstein-Cartan theory at the first post-Newtonian level by resorting to the Blanchet-Damour formalism. After having worked out the basic principles of the hydrodynamics in Einstein-Cartan framework, we study the Weyssenhoff fluid within the post-Newtonian approximation scheme. The complexity of the underlying dynamical equations suggests to employ a discrete description via the point-particle limit, a procedure which permits the an…
The geometry of a light wavefront, evolving from a initial flat wavefront in the 3-space associated with a post-Newtonian relativistic spacetime, is studied numerically by means of the ray tracing method. For a discretization of the bidimensional light wavefront, a surface fitting technique is used to determine the curvature of this surface. The relationship between the intrinsic curvature of the wavefront and the change of the arrival time at different points on the Earth is also numerically discussed.
We discuss the first-time calculation of the static gravitational two-body potential up to fifth post-Newtonian(PN) order. The results are achieved through a manifest factorization property of the odd PN diagrams. The factorization property is illustrated also at first and third PN order.
