Existence and uniqueness of rotating fluid bodies in equilibrium is still poorly understood in General Relativity (GR). Apart from the limiting case of infinitely thin disks, the only known global results in the stationary rotating case (Heilig [14] and Makino [21] [arXiv:1705.07392]) show existence in GR nearby a Newtonian configuration (under suitable additional restrictions). In this work we prove existence and uniqueness of rigidly (slowly) rotating fluid bodies in equilibrium to second order in perturbation theory in GR. The most widely used perturbation framework to describe slowly rigidly rotating stars in the strong field regime is the Hartle-Thorne model. The model involves a number of hypotheses, some explicit, like equatorial symmetry or that the perturbation parameter is proportional to the rotation, but some implicit, particularly on the structure and regularity of the perturbation tensors and the conditions of their matching at the surface. In this work, with basis on the gauge results obtained in [25], the Hartle-Thorne model is fully derived from first principles and only assuming that the perturbations describe a rigidly rotating finite perfect fluid ball (with no layer at the surface) with the same barotropic equation of state as the static ball. Rigidly rotating fluid balls are analyzed consistently in second order perturbation theory by imposing only basic differentiability requirements and boundedness. Our results prove in particular that, at this level of approximation, the spacetime must be indeed equatorially symmetric and is fully determined by two parameters, namely the central pressure and the uniform angular velocity of the fluid.
A relatively recent study by Mars and Senovilla provided us with a uniqueness result for the exterior vacuum gravitational field of global models describing finite isolated rotating bodies in equilibrium in General Relativity (GR). The generalisation to exterior electrovacuum gravitational fields, to include charged rotating objects, is presented here.
A relatively recent study by Mars and Senovilla provided us with a uniqueness result for the exterior vacuum gravitational field generated by an isolated distribution of matter in axial rotation in equilibrium in General Relativity. The generalisation to exterior electrovacuum gravitational fields, to include charged rotating objects, is presented here.
We consider rotating black hole configurations of self-gravitating maps from spacetime into arbitrary Riemannian manifolds. We first establish the integrability conditions for the Killing fields generating the stationary and the axisymmetric isometry (circularity theorem). Restricting ourselves to mappings with harmonic action, we subsequently prove that the only stationary and axisymmetric, asymptotically flat black hole solution with regular event horizon is the Kerr metric. Together with the uniqueness result for non-rotating configurations and the strong rigidity theorem, this establishes …
The problem of constructing global models describing isolated axially symmetric rotating bodies in equilibrium is analyzed. It is claimed that, whenever the global spacetime is constructed by giving boundary data on the limiting surface of the body and integrating Einstein's equations both inside and ouside the body, the problem becomes overdetermined. Similarly, when the spacetime describing the interior of the body is explicitly given, the problem of finding the exterior vacuum solution becomes overdetermined. We discuss in detail the procedure to be followed in order to construct the exterio…
We study a five-dimensional spacetime admitting, in the presence of torsion, a non-degenerate conformal Killing-Yano 2-form which is closed with respect to both the usual exterior differentiation and the exterior differentiation with torsion. Furthermore, assuming that the torsion is closed and co-closed with respect to the exterior differentiation with torsion, we prove that such a spacetime is the only spacetime given by the Chong-Cvetic-Lu-Pope solution for stationary, rotating charged black holes with two independent angular momenta in five-dimensional minimal gauged supergravity.
In the present paper we prove a classification (uniqueness) theorem for stationary, asymptotically flat black hole spacetimes with connected and non-degenerate horizon in 4D Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory with an arbitrary dilaton coupling parameter $α$. We show that such black holes are uniquely specified by the length of the horizon interval, angular momentum, electric and magnetic charge and the value of the dilaton field at infinity when the dilaton coupling parameter satisfies $0\le α^2\le3$. The proof is based on the nonpositivity of the Riemann curvature operator on the space of the po…
We study 5-dimensional black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory with free Chern-Simons coupling parameter. We consider an event horizon with spherical topology, and both angular momenta of equal magnitude. In particular, we study extremal black holes, which can be used to obtain the boundary of the domain of existence. Above a critical value of the Chern-Simons coupling constant we find non-static extremal solutions with vanishing angular momentum. These solutions form a sequence which can be labeled by the node number of the magnetic $U(1)$ potential or the inertial dragging. As th…
We consider stationary extremal black hole solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations with a negative cosmological constant in four dimensions. We determine all non-static axisymmetric near-horizon geometries (with non-toroidal horizon topology) and all static near-horizon geometries for black holes of this kind. This allows us to deduce that the most general near-horizon geometry of an asymptotically globally AdS(4) rotating extremal black hole, is the near-horizon limit of extremal Kerr-Newman-AdS(4). We also identify the subset of near-horizon geometries which are supersymmetric. Finally, …
Charged, rotating black hole solutions of Einstein's gravitational equations are investigated in the presence of a cosmological constant. A pair of wave equations governing the electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations are derived.
We study the stability of $D \geq 7$ asymptotically flat black holes rotating in a single two-plane against tensor-type gravitational perturbations. The extensive search of quasinormal modes for these black holes did not indicate any presence of growing modes, implying the stability of simply rotating Myers-Perry black holes against tensor-type perturbations.
In this paper, we study the rotational wormhole and scalar perturbation under the spacetime. We found the Schrödinger like equation and consider the asymptotic solutions for the special cases.
In this paper, the gravitational wave generation by a slowly rotating thin-shell wormhole is considered. Since the rotating thin-shell wormhole is assumed to be an axisymmetric rigid body, the rotation axis coincides with the largest principal axis which means there is no precession motion. However, if there is a perturbation in the angular velocity, the rotating wormhole can move with precession by perturbation which make arise the gravitational waves. We derive the gravitational wave spectrum, energy loss rate, and angular momentum loss rate.
We show a uniqueness theorem for charged dipole rotating black rings in the bosonic sector of five-dimensional minimal supergravity, generalizing our previous work [arXiv:0901.4724] on the uniqueness of charged rotating black holes with topologically spherical horizon in the same theory. More precisely, assuming the existence of two commuting axial Killing vector fields, we prove that an asymptotically flat, stationary charged rotating black hole with non-degenerate connected event horizon of cross-section topology S^1XS^2 in the five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory-if exists-…
We prove that a regular stationary black-hole solution of the Einstein vacuum equations which is "close" to some Kerr solution is, in fact, isometric to that Kerr solution.
We study the exterior vacuum problem for first and second order stationary and axially symmetric perturbations of static bodies. The boundary conditions and their compatibility for the existence of an asymptotically flat exterior solution are discussed.
We present new self-gravitating solutions in five dimensions that describe circular strings, i.e., rings, electrically coupled to a two-form potential (as e.g., fundamental strings do), or to a dual magnetic one-form. The rings are prevented from collapsing by rotation, and they create a field analogous to a dipole, with no net charge measured at infinity. They can have a regular horizon, and we show that this implies the existence of an infinite number of black rings, labeled by a continuous parameter, with the same mass and angular momentum as neutral black rings and black holes. We also dis…
The problem of describing isolated rotating bodies in equilibrium in General Relativity has so far been treated under the assumption of the circularity condition in the interior of the body. For a fluid without energy flux, this condition implies that the fluid flow moves only along the angular direction, i.e. there is no convection. Using this simplification, some recent studies have provided us with uniqueness and existence results for asymptotically flat vacuum exterior fields given the interior sources. Here, the generalisation of the problem to include general sources is studied. It is pr…
We consider the late-time evolution of {\it gravitational} and electromagnetic perturbations in realistic {\it rotating} Kerr spacetimes. We give a detailed analysis of the mode-coupling phenomena in rotating gravitational collapse. A consequence of this phenomena is that the late-time tail is dominated by modes which, in general, may have an angular distribution different from the original one. In addition, we show that different types of fields have {\it different} decaying rates. This result turns over the traditional belief (which has been widely accepted during the last three decades) tha…
We consider the metric perturbations around a stationary rotating Nambu-Goto string in Minkowski spacetime. By solving the linearized Einstein equations, we study the effects of azimuthal frame-dragging around the rotation axis and linear frame-dragging along the rotation axis, the Newtonian logarithmic potential, and the angular deficit around the string as the potential mode. We also investigate gravitational waves propagating off the string and propagating along the string, and show that the stationary rotating string emits gravitational waves toward the directions specified by discrete ang…
We study linear perturbations of a rotating black hole solution that has been recently discovered in degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor (DHOST) theories. We find a parametrization which permits the explicit resolution of the scalar perturbation while the tensor perturbation is obtained as a Teukolsky equation supplemented by an effective source term. The effective source term is related to the black hole hair and can be computed exactly for any value of the black hole spin. We discuss how the perturbations of the geometry and thus the emitted gravitational waves could be modified in compari…
We study scalar test-field perturbations on top of a Kerr--black-bounce background, i.e. a family of rotating regular black holes and/or rotating traversable wormholes that can mimic Kerr black holes. We compute the quasi-normal modes for a massless field in both the regular black holes and wormhole branches, confirming the stability of the former and identifying a set of growing modes that renders the latter unstable. We further compute the superradiance amplification factors, for massless and massive fields, in the regular black hole branch, confirming that these objects superradiate, though…
We prove that the only four dimensional, stationary, rotating, asymptotically flat (analytic) vacuum black hole with a single degenerate horizon is given by the extremal Kerr solution. We also prove a similar uniqueness theorem for the extremal Kerr-Newman solution. This closes a longstanding gap in the black hole uniqueness theorems.
A (charged) rotating black hole may be unstable against a (charged) massive scalar field perturbation due to the existence of superradiance modes. The stability property depends on the parameters of the system. In this paper, the superradiant stable parameter space is studied for the four-dimensional extremal Kerr and Kerr-Newman black holes under massive and charged massive scalar perturbation. For the extremal Kerr case, it is found that when the angular frequency and proper mass of the scalar perturbation satisfy the inequality $ω<μ/\sqrt{3}$, the extremal Kerr black hole and scalar perturb…
The linear perturbation of a Kerr black hole induced by a rotating massive circular ring is discussed by using the formalism by Teukolsky, Chrzanowski, Cohen and Kegeles. In these formalism, the perturbed Weyl scalars, $ψ_0$ and $ψ_4$, are first obtained from the Teukolsky equation. The perturbed metric is obtained in a radiation gauge via the Hertz potential. The computation can be done in the same way as in our previous paper, in which we considered the perturbation of a Schwarzschild black hole induced by a rotating ring. By adding lower multipole modes such as mass and angular momentum per…
We investigate the stability of higher dimensional rotating black holes against scalar perturbations. In particular, we make a thorough numerical and analytical analysis of six-dimensional black holes, not only in the low rotation regime but in the high rotation regime as well. Our results suggest that higher dimensional Kerr black holes are stable against scalar perturbations, even in the ultra-spinning regime.
In this paper, the dynamical equations and junction conditions at the interface between adjacent layers of different elastic properties for an elastic deformable astronomical body in the first post-Newtonian approximation of Einstein theory of gravity are discussed in both rotating Cartesian coordinates and rotating spherical coordinates. The unperturbed rotating body (the ground state) is described as uniformly rotating, stationary and axisymmetric configuration in an asymptotically flat space-time manifold. Deviations from the equilibrium configuration are described by means of a displacemen…
We develop the effective theory for perturbations around black holes with scalar hair, in two directions. First, we show that the scalar-Gauss--Bonnet theory, often used as an example exhibiting scalar black hole hair, can be deformed by galileon operators leading to order unity changes to its predictions. The effective theory for perturbations thus provides an efficient framework for describing and constraining broad classes of scalar-tensor theories, of which the addition of galileon operators is an example. Second, we extend the effective theory to perturbations around an axisymmetric, slow…
We present a numerical study of the time evolution of perturbations of rotating black holes. The solutions are obtained by integrating the Teukolsky equation written as a first-order in time, coupled system of equations, in a form that explicitly captures its hyperbolic structure. We address the numerical difficulties of solving the equation in its original form. We follow the propagation of generic initial data through the burst, quasinormal ringing and power-law tail phases. In particular, we calculate the effects due to the rotation of the black hole on the scattering of incident gravitatio…
A number of authors provided arguments that a rotating gravastar is a good candidate for a source of the Kerr metric. These arguments were based on the second order perturbation analysis. In the following paper, we construct a perturbative solution of the rotating gravastar up to the third perturbation order and show that it cannot be continuously matched with the Kerr spacetime.
In second order perturbation theory different definitions are known of gauge invariant perturbations in single field inflationary models. Consequently the corresponding gauge invariant cubic actions do not have the same form. Here we show that the cubic action for one choice of gauge invariant variables is unique in the following sense: the action for any other, non-linearly related variable can be brought to the same bulk action, plus additional boundary terms. These boundary terms correspond to the choice of hypersurface and generate extra, disconnected contributions to the bispectrum. We al…
Assessing the stability of higher-dimensional rotating black holes requires a study of linearized gravitational perturbations around such backgrounds. We study perturbations of Myers-Perry black holes with equal angular momenta in an odd number of dimensions (greater than five), allowing for a cosmological constant. We find a class of perturbations for which the equations of motion reduce to a single radial equation. In the asymptotically flat case we find no evidence of any instability. In the asymptotically anti-de Sitter case, we demonstrate the existence of a superradiant instability that …
We develop a Lagrangian perturbation framework for rotating non-relativistic superfluid neutron stars. This leads to the first generalization of classic work on the stability properties of rotating stars to models which account for the presence of potentially weakly coupled superfluid components. Our analysis is based on the standard two-fluid model expected to be relevant for the conditions that prevail in the outer core of mature neutron stars. We discuss the implications of our results for dynamical and secular instabilities of a simple neutron star model in which the two fluids are allowed…
We analyse the superradiant stability of braneworld extremal Kerr and Kerr-Newman black holes under massive scalar perturbation. These black hole solutions differ from their four dimensional counterpart by the presence of a tidal charge, which unlike electric charge, can take both positive and negative values and carries the signature of extra dimensions. We consider the perturbation of the brane geometry by a massive scalar field. From the radial equation of motion of the scalar field, we have found the effective potential felt by the field. For superradiant stability, there should not be any…
We present an analytic method for calculating the late-time tails of a linear scalar field outside a Kerr black hole. We give the asymptotic behavior at timelike infinity (for fixed $r$), at future null infinity, and along the event horizon (EH). In all three asymptotic regions we find a power-law decay. We show that the power indices describing the decay of the various modes at fixed $r$ differ from the corresponding Schwarzschild values. Also, the scalar field oscillates along the null generators of the EH (with advanced-time frequency proportional to the mode's magnetic number $m$).
Perturbations of rotating relativistic stars can be classified by their behavior under parity. For axial perturbations (r-modes), initial data with negative canonical energy is found with angular dependence $e^{imϕ}$ for all values of $m\geq 2$ and for arbitrarily slow rotation. This implies instability (or marginal stability) of such perturbations for rotating perfect fluids. This low $m$-instability is strikingly different from the instability to polar perturbations, which sets in first for large values of $m$. The timescale for the axial instability appears, for small angular velocity $Ω$, …
We have studied the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of a slowly rotating black hole with Lorentz-violating parameter in Einstein-bumblebee gravity. We analyse the slow rotation approximation of the rotating black hole in the Einstein-bumblebee gravity, and obtain the master equations for scalar perturbation, vector perturbation and axial gravitational perturbation, respectively. Using the matrix method and the continuous fraction method, we numerically calculate the QNM frequencies. In particular, for scalar field, it shows that the QNMs up to the second order of rotation parameter have higher accura…
The massless scalar field in the higher-dimensional Kerr black hole (Myers- Perry solution with a single rotation axis) has been investigated. It has been shown that the field equation is separable in arbitrary dimensions. The quasi-normal modes of the scalar field have been searched in five dimensions using the continued fraction method. The numerical result shows the evidence for the stability of the scalar perturbation of the five-dimensional Kerr black holes. The time scale of the resonant oscillation in the rapidly rotating black hole, in which case the horizon radius becomes small, is ch…
Precession is one of the important mechanisms of gravitational wave generation in astrophysics. In general, free precession of a rigid body can be caused by the rotation of a triaxial body. In the case of symmetric body, if only the principal axis does not coincide with the axis of rotation, then there is the precession. When a symmetric body rotates around one of its principal axes, the body cannot move with precession. However, when there is a perturbation in angular velocity of the symmetric body spinning around the principal axis of the largest moment, the body can have a precession motion…
We show that, independently of the scalar field potential and of specific asymptotic properties of the spacetime (asymptotically flat, de Sitter or anti-de Sitter), any static, spherically symmetric or planar, black hole or soliton solution of the Einstein theory minimally coupled to a real scalar field with a general potential is mode stable under linear odd-parity perturbations. To this end, we generalize the Regge-Wheeler equation for a generic self-interacting scalar field, and show that the potential of the relevant Schrödinger operator can be mapped, by the so-called S-deformation, to a …
Perturbations of Kerr spacetime are typically studied with the Teukolsky formalism, in which a pair of invariant components of the perturbed Weyl tensor are expressed in terms of separable modes that satisfy ordinary differential equations. However, for certain applications it is desirable to construct the full metric perturbation in the Lorenz gauge, in which the linearized Einstein field equations take a manifestly hyperbolic form. Here we obtain a set of Lorenz-gauge solutions to the vacuum field equations in terms of homogeneous solutions to the spin-2, spin-1 and spin-0 Teukolsky equation…
It is well known that all rotating perfect fluid stars in general relativity are unstable to certain non-axisymmetric perturbations via the Chandrasekhar-Friedman-Schutz (CFS) instability. However, the mechanism of the CFS instability requires, in an essential way, the loss of angular momentum by gravitational radiation and, in many instances, it acts on too long a timescale to be physically/astrophysically relevant. It is therefore of interest to examine the stability of rotating, relativistic stars to axisymmetric perturbations, where the CFS instability does not occur. In this paper, we pro…
Hartle's model for slowly rotating stars has been extensively used to compute equilibrium configurations of slowly rotating stars to second order in perturbation theory in General Relativity, given a barotropic equation of state (EOS). A recent study based on the modern theory of perturbed matchings show that the model must be amended to accommodate EOS's in which the energy density does not vanish at the surface of the non rotating star. In particular, the expression for the change in mass given in the original model, i.e. a contribution to the mass that arises when the perturbations are chos…
Well-known results demonstrate the uniqueness of extremal isolated horizons (equivalently near-horizon spacetimes) in (3+1)-dimensions. This paper briefly reviews some of these results and then explicitly constructs families of non-asymptotically flat, non-spherically symmetric spacetimes that nevertheless contain spherically symmetric extremal horizons that are isomorphic to those found in Reissner-Nordstrom spacetimes.
We study nonaxisymmetric perturbations of rotating relativistic stars. modeled as perfect-fluid equilibria. Instability to a mode with angular dependence $\exp(imϕ)$ sets in when the frequency of the mode vanishes. The locations of these zero-frequency modes along sequences of rotating stars are computed in the framework of general relativity. We consider models of uniformly rotating stars with polytropic equations of state, finding that the relativistic models are unstable to nonaxisymmetric modes at significantly smaller values of rotation than in the Newtonian limit. Most strikingly, the m=…
We present a new derivation of the equations governing the oscillations of slowly rotating relativistic stars. Previous investigations have been mostly carried out in the Regge-Wheeler gauge. However, in this gauge the process of linearizing the Einstein field equations leads to perturbation equations which as such cannot be used to perform numerical time evolutions. It is only through the tedious process of combining and rearranging the perturbation variables in a clever way that the system can be cast into a set of hyperbolic first order equations, which is then well suited for the numerical…
Rotating charged black strings are solutions of four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell equations with a negative cosmological constant and a non-trivial topology. According to the AdS/CFT correspondence, these black strings are dual to rotating thermal states of a strongly interacting field theory with nonzero chemical potential that lives in a cylinder. The dynamics of fluctuations in the field theory can be studied from the perturbation equations for classical fields in a black-string spacetime. With this motivation in mind, we develop here a completely gauge and tetrad invariant perturbation app…
We study analytically, via the Newman-Penrose formalism, the late time decay of scalar, electromagnetic, and gravitational perturbations outside a realistic rotating (Kerr) black hole. We find a power-law decay at timelike infinity, as well as at null infinity and along the event horizon (EH). For generic initial data we derive the power-law indices for all radiating modes of the various fields. We also give an exact analytic expression (accurate to leading order in 1/t) for the r-dependence of the late time tail at any r. Some of our main conclusions are: (i) For generic initial data, the lat…
We derive the equation governing the axial-perturbations in the space-time of a non-rotating uncharged primordial black hole (PBH), produced in early Universe, whose metric is taken as the generalized McVittie metric. The generalized McVittie metric is a cosmological black hole metric, proposed by V. Faraoni and A. Jacques in 2007 [Phys. Rev. D 76, 063510 (2007)]. This describes the space-time of a Schwarzschild black hole embedded in FLRW-Universe, while allowing its mass-change. Our derivation has basic similarities with the procedure of derivation of S. Chandrasekhar, for deriving the Regge…
Black holes provide a natural laboratory to study particle physics and astrophysics. When black holes are surrounded by matter fields, there will be plenty of phenomena which can have observational consequences, from which we can learn about the matter fields as well as black hole spacetime. In this work, we investigate the massive scalar field in the vicinity of a newly proposed rotating regular black hole inspired by quantum gravity. We will especially investigate how this non-singular spactime will affect the superradiance instability and quasinormal modes of the scalar filed. We derive the…
Will (1974) treated the perturbation of a Schwarzschild black hole due to a slowly rotating light concentric thin ring by solving the perturbation equations in terms of a multipole expansion of the mass-and-rotation perturbation series. In the Schwarzschild background, his approach can be generalized to the perturbation by a thin disc (which is more relevant astrophysically), but, due to a rather bad convergence properties, the resulting expansions are not suitable for specific (numerical) computations. However, we show that Green's functions represented by the Will's result can be expressed i…
The instability of rotating Kerr black holes due to massive scalar perturbations is investigated. It is well known that a bosonic field impinging on a Kerr black hole can be amplified as it scatters off the hole. This superradiant scattering occurs for frequencies in the range $ω<mΩ$, where $Ω$ is the angular frequency of the black hole and $m$ is the azimuthal harmonic index of the mode. If the incident field has a non-zero rest mass, $μ$, then the mass term effectively works as a mirror, reflecting the scattered wave back towards the black hole. The wave may bounce back and forth between the…
