We give explicitly in the closed formulae the genus zero primary potentials of the three 6-dimensional FJRW theories of the simple-elliptic singularity $\tilde E_7$ with the non-maximal symmetry groups. For each of these FJRW theories we establish the CY/LG correspondence to the Gromov-Witten theory of the orbifold $[\mathcal{E}/ (\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})]$ --- the orbifold quotient of the elliptic curve by the hyperelliptic involution. Namely, we give explicitly the Givental's group elements, whose actions on the partition function of the Gromov--Witten theory of $[\mathcal{E}/ (\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})]$ give up to a linear change of the variables the partition functions of the FJRW theories mentioned. We keep track of the linear changes of the variables needed. We show that using only the axioms of Fan--Jarvis--Ruan, the genus zero potential can only be reconstructed up to a scaling.
In this paper, we establish the convergence for Gromov-Witten invariant of elliptic orbifold $\mathbb{P}^1$ with type $(3,3,3), (4,4,2)$ and $(6,3,2)$. We also prove the mirror theorems of Gromov-Witten theory for those orbifolds and FJRW theory of elliptic singularities. Using T.Milanov and Y. Ruan's work, we prove the Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi-Yau correspondence of all genera for the above three types of elliptic orbifold $\mathbb{P}^1$.
We consider a mirror symmetry of simple elliptic singularities. In particular, we construct isomorphisms of Frobenius manifolds among the one from the Gromov--Witten theory of a weighted projective line, the one from the theory of primitive forms for a universal unfolding of a simple elliptic singularity and the one from the invariant theory for an elliptic Weyl group. As a consequence, we give a geometric interpretation of the Fourier coefficients of an eta product considered by K. Saito.
A log symplectic manifold is a complex manifold equipped with a complex symplectic form that has simple poles on a hypersurface. The possible singularities of such a hypersurface are heavily constrained. We introduce the notion of an elliptic point of a log symplectic structure, which is a singular point at which a natural transversality condition involving the modular vector field is satisfied, and we prove a local normal form for such points that involves the simple elliptic surface singularities $\tilde{E}_6,\tilde{E}_7$ and $\tilde{E}_8$. Our main application is to the classification of Po…
We give a full exceptional collection in the triangulated category of singularities in the sense of Orlov for a hypersurface singularity of Fermat type, and discuss its relation with homological mirror symmetry for simple elliptic hypersurface singularities.
Among log canonical surface singularities, the ones which have a rational homology disk smoothing are the cyclic quotient singularities $\frac{1}{n^2}(1,na-1)$ with gcd$(a,n)=1$, and three distinguished elliptic quotient singularities. We show the existence of smoothable KSBA normal surfaces with $π_1=1$, $p_g=0$, and $K^2=1,2$ for each of these three singularities. We also give a list of new (and old) normal surface singularities in smoothable KSBA surfaces for invariants $π_1=1$, $p_g=0$, and $K^2=1,2,3,4$.
The main message of the paper is that for Gorenstein singularities, whose (real) link is rational homology sphere, the Artin--Laufer program can be continued. Here we give the complete answer in the case of elliptic singularities. The main result of the paper says that in the case of an elliptic Gorenstein singularity whose link is rational homology sphere, the geometric genus is a topological invariant. Actually, it is exactly the length of the elliptic sequence in the minimal resolution (or, equivalently, in S. S.-T. Yau's terminology: these singularities are maximally elliptic). In the pape…
We point out an interesting relation between hypersurface elliptic singularities and log Enriques surfaces: with a few exceptions, every hypersurface elliptic singularity define some klt log Enriques surface $(S,Diff)$. In many cases, the log canonical cover of $(S,Diff)$ is a Du Val K3 surface with ``large'' nonsymplectic automorphism group.
For any elliptic normal surface singularity with rational homology sphere link we consider a new elliptic sequence, which differs from the one introduced by Laufer and S. S.-T. Yau. However, we show that their length coincide. Using the properties of both sequences we succeed to connect the common length with the geometric genus and also with several topological invariants, e.g. with the Seiberg--Witten invariant of the link.
We give more or less explicit equations for all two-dimensional cusp singularities of embedding dimension at least 4. They are closely related to Felix Klein's equations for universal curves with level n structure. The main technical result is a description of the versal deformation of an n-gon in $P^{n-1}$. The final section contains the equations for smoothings of simple elliptic singularities (of multiplicity at most 9).
If $(\widetilde{X},E)\to (X,o)$ is the resolution of a complex normal surface singularity and $c_1:{\rm Pic}(\widetilde{X})\to H^2(\widetilde{X},{\mathbb Z})$ is the Chern class map, then ${\rm Pic}^{l'}(\widetilde{X}):= c_1^{-1}(l')$ has a (Brill--Noether type) stratification $W_{l', k}:= \{{\mathcal L}\in {\rm Pic}^{l'}(\widetilde{X})\,:\, h^1({\mathcal L})=k\}$. In this note we determine it for elliptic singularities together with the stratification according to the cycle of fixed components. For elliptic singularities we also characterize the End Curve Condition and Weak End Curve Conditio…
Following the work of Castano-Bernard and Matessi on conifold transition in the Gross-Siebert program, we construct orbi-conifold transitions of the Shoen's Calabi-Yau threefold and their mirrors. The construction glues together the local models for orbi-conifold transitions in the previous work with Kanazawa.
Isolated hypersurface singularities come equipped with a Milnor lattice, a ${\mathbb Z}$-lattice of finite rank, and a set of $distinguished$ ${\mathbb Z}$-bases of this lattice. Usually these bases are constructed from $one$ morsification and $all\ possible$ choices of distinguished systems of paths. But what does one obtain if one considers $all\ possible$ morsifications and $one$ fixed distinguished system of paths? Looijenga asked this question 1974 for the simple singularities. He and Deligne found that one obtains a bijection between Stokes regions in a universal unfolding and the set of…
Let f : X -> S be any elliptic fibration. If X has dimension 3 and is not uniruled, then X has a minimal model (with terminal singularities) [Mori]. In earlier work we have shown that there exists a birationally equivalent elliptic fibration p: Y -> T such that Y is minimal and a multiple of K_Y can be expressed as the pullback of a divisor from T. Moreover T has at worst quotient singularities; it is not difficult to find examples where T is actually singular. In this paper we describe the singularities of this parameter surface T in the case of no multiple fibers. Although T is not uniquely …
For an isolated hypersurface singularity which is neither simple nor simple elliptic, it is shown that there exists a distinguished basis of vanishing cycles which contains two basis elements with an arbitrary intersection number. This implies that the set of Coxeter-Dynkin diagrams of such a singularity is infinite, whereas it is finite for the simple and simple elliptic singularities. For the simple elliptic singularities, it is shown that the set of distinguished bases of vanishing cycles is also infinite. We also show that some of the hyperbolic unimodal singularities have Coxeter-Dynkin d…
Under some hypotheses on the singular type of the one-parameter family of elliptic curves in a primitively polarized $K3$ surface $S$ determined by its polarization (which is expected to be true for a very general polarized $K3$ surface), we give a more geometric proof of the fact that the second Chern class of $S$ is equal to $24 \cdot o_S$ in the Chow group of $0$-cycles where $o_S$ is the Beauville-Voisin canonical $0$-cycle.
We study the elliptic genera of two-dimensional orbifold CFTs, where the orbifolding procedure introduces du Val surface singularities on the target space. The N=4 character decompositions of the elliptic genus contributions from the twisted sectors at the singularities obey a consistent scaling property, and contain information about the arrangement of exceptional rational curves in the resolution. We also discuss how these twisted sector elliptic genera are related to twining genera and Hodge elliptic genera for sigma models with K3 target space.
In a series of papers \cite{KS,MR}, Krawitz, Milanov, Ruan, and Shen have verified the so-called Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi-Yau (LG/CY) correspondence for simple elliptic singularities $E_N^{(1,1)}$ ($N=6,7,8$). As a byproduct it was also proved that the orbifold Gromov--Witten invariants of the orbifold projective lines $\mathbb{P}^1_{3,3,3}$, $\mathbb{P}^1_{4,4,2}$, and $\mathbb{P}^1_{6,3,2}$ are quasi-modular forms on an appropriate modular group. While the modular group for $\mathbb{P}^1_{3,3,3}$ is $Γ(3)$, the modular groups in the other two cases were left unknown. The goal of this paper is …
We construct and study the reduced, relative, genus one Gromov--Witten theory of very ample pairs. These invariants form the principal component contribution to relative Gromov--Witten theory in genus one and are relative versions of Zinger's reduced Gromov--Witten invariants. We relate the relative and absolute theories by degeneration of the tangency conditions, and the resulting formulas generalise a well-known recursive calculation scheme put forward by Gathmann in genus zero. The geometric input is a desingularisation of the principal component of the moduli space of genus one logarithmic…
A description of Cohen-Macaulay modules over cusp surface singularities and over unimodule hypersurface singularities of type T is given. It is proved that among minimally elliptic singularities and their quotients only simple elliptic and cusps are tame, all others are wild (with respect to the classification of Cohen-Macaulay modules).
In characteristic $p=2$, we compute the singularities of Kummer varieties arising from products of elliptic curves. This result is generalized to Kummer varieties associated to ordinary abelian varieties.
Motivated by M-theory compactification on elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds, we present a correspondence between networks of small resolutions for singular elliptic fibrations and Coulomb branches of five-dimensional N=1 gauge theories. While resolutions correspond to subchambers of the Coulomb branch, partial resolutions correspond to higher codimension loci at which the Coulomb branch intersects the Coulomb-Higgs branches. Flops between different resolutions are identified with reflections on the Coulomb branch. Physics aside, this correspondence provides an interesting link between elliptic fi…
We study local, global and local-to-global properties of threefolds with certain singularities. We prove criteria for these threefolds to be rational homology manifolds and conditions for threefolds to satisfy rational Poincaré duality. We relate the topological Euler characteristic of elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds with $\mathbb Q$-factorial terminal singularities to dimensions of Lie algebras and certain representations, Milnor and Tyurina numbers and other birational invariants of an elliptic fibration. We give an interpretation in terms of complex deformations. We state a conjecture on the…
Let $X$ be an elliptic surface over ${\bf P}^1$ with $κ(X)=1$, and $M=M(c_2)$ be the moduli scheme of rank-two stable sheaves $E$ on $X$ with $(c_1(E),c_2(E))=(0,c_2)$ in $\operatorname{Pic}(X)\times\mathbb{Z}$. We look into defining equations of $M$ at its singularity $E$, partly because if $M$ admits only canonical singularities, then the Kodaira dimension $κ(M)$ can be calculated. We show the following. (A) $E$ is at worst canonical singularity of $M$ if the restriction of $E_η$ to the generic fiber of $X$ has no rank-one subsheaf, and if the number of multiple fibers of $X$ is a few. (B) W…
In this paper we prove that the GW invariants of the elliptic orbifold lines with weights (3,3,3), (4,4,2), and (6,3,2) are quasi-modular forms. Our method is based on Givental's higher genus reconstruction formalism applied to the settings of Saito's Frobenius structures for simple elliptic singularities. Our results are part of a larger project whose goal is to prove the Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi-Yau correspondence for simple elliptic singularities. The correspondence describes a relation between Gromov-Witten theory (of a certain hypersurface) and Fan-Jarvis-Ruan-Witten theory (of a certain La…
We revisit the construction of elliptic class given by Borisov and Libgober for singular algebraic varieties. Assuming torus action we adjust the theory to equivariant local situation. We study theta function identities having geometric origin. In the case of quotient singularities $\mathbb C^n/G$, where $G$ is a finite group the theta identities arise from McKay correspondence. The symplectic singularities are of special interest. The Du Val surface singularity $A_n$ leads to a remarkable formula.
A simple elliptic singularity of type $E_N^{(1,1)}$ ($N=6,7,8$) can be described in terms of a marginal deformation of an invertible polynomial $W$. In the papers \cite{KS} and \cite{MR} the authors proved a mirror symmetry statement for some particular choices of $W$ and used it to prove quasi-modularity of Gromov-Witten invariants for certain elliptic orbifold $\mathbb{P}^1$s. However, the choice of the polynomial $W$ and its marginal deformation $ϕ_μ$ are not unique. In this paper, we investigate the global mirror symmetry phenomenon for the one-parameter family $W+σϕ_μ$. In each case the m…
We classify birational maps into elliptic fibrations of a general quasismooth hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}(1,a_{1},a_{2},a_{3},a_{4})$ of degree $\sum_{i=1}^{4}a_{i}$ that has terminal singularities.
We present versal complex analytic families, over a smooth base and of fibre dimension zero, one, or two, where the discriminant constitutes a free divisor. These families include finite flat maps, versal deformations of reduced curve singularities, and versal deformations of Gorenstein surface singularities in C^5. It is shown that such free divisors often admit a "fast normalization", obtained by a single application of the Grauert-Remmert normalization algorithm. For a particular Gorenstein surface singularity in C^5, namely the simple elliptic singularity of type \tilde A_4, we exhibit an …
We define the singular orbifold elliptic genus and $E$-function for all normal surfaces without strictly log-canonical singularities, and prove the analogue of the McKay correspondence in this setting. Our invariants generalize the stringy invariants defined by Willem Veys for this class of singularities. We show that the ability to define these invariants is closely linked to rigidity phenomena associated to the elliptic genus.
We initiate a systematic investigation of F-theory on elliptic fibrations with singularities which cannot be resolved without breaking the Calabi-Yau condition, corresponding to $\mathbb Q$-factorial terminal singularities. It is the purpose of this paper to elucidate the physical origin of such non-crepant singularities in codimension two and to systematically analyse F-theory compactifications containing such singularities. The singularities reflect the presence of localised matter states from wrapped M2-branes which are not charged under any massless gauge potential. We identify a class of …
Let $p\in X$ be the germ of a cusp singularity and let $ι$ be an antisymplectic involution, that is an involution such that there exists a nowhere vanishing holomorphic 2-form $Ω$ on $X\setminus \{p\}$ for which $ι^*(Ω)=-Ω$. Assume also that the involution is fixed point free on $X\setminus\{p\}$. We prove that a sufficient condition for such a singularity equipped with an antisymplectic involution to be equivariantly smoothable is the existence of a Looijenga (or anticanonical) pair $(Y,D)$ that admits an involution free on $Y\setminus D$ and that reverses the orientation of $D$. This work al…
We study the Seiberg-Witten curves for N=2 SUSY gauge theories arising from type IIA string configurations with two orientifold sixplanes. Such theories lift to elliptic models in M-theory. We express the M-theory background for these models as a nontrivial elliptic fibration over C. We discuss singularities of this surface, and write the Seiberg-Witten curve for several theories as a subvariety of this surface.
Any simple elliptic singularity of type $\tilde{D}_5$ can be obtained by taking the intersection of the nilpotent variety and the 4-dimensional "good slices" in the semi-simple Lie algebra ${\frak sl}(2, {\mathbb C}) \oplus {\frak sl}(2, {\mathbb C})$. We describe these new slices purely by the structure of the Lie algebra. We also construct the semi-universal deformation spaces of $\tilde{D}_5$-singularities by using the 4-dimensional "good slices".
Let X be a surface with an isolated singularity at the origin, given by the equation Q(x,y,z)=0, where Q is a weighted-homogeneous polynomial. In particular, this includes the Kleinian surfaces X = C^2/G for G < SL(2,C) finite. Let Y be the n-th symmetric power of X. We compute the zeroth Poisson homology of Y, as a graded vector space with respect to the weight grading. In the Kleinian case, this confirms a conjecture of Alev, that the zeroth Poisson homology of the n-th symmetric power of C^2/G is isomorphic to the zeroth Hochschild homology of the n-th symmetric power of the algebra of G-in…
To every elliptic Calabi-Yau threefold with a section $X$ there can be associated a Lie group $G$ and a representation $ρ$ of that group. The group is determined from the Weierstrass model, which has singularities that are generically rational double points; these double points lead to local factors of $G$ which are either the corresponding A-D-E groups or some associated non-simply laced groups. The representation $ρ$ is a sum of representations coming from the local factors of $G$, and of other representations which can be associated to the points at which the singularities are worse than ge…
The paper contains a proof that elliptic genus of a Calabi-Yau manifold is a Jacobi form, finds in which dimensions the elliptic genus is determined by the Hodge numbers and shows that elliptic genera of a Calabi-Yau hypersurface in a toric variety and its mirror coincide up to sign. The proof of the mirror property is based on the extension of elliptic genus to Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric varieties with Gorenstein singularities.
We show that the degree of the Alexander polynomial of an irreducible plane algebraic curve with nodes and cusps as the only singularities does not exceed ${5 \over 3}d-2$ where $d$ is the degree of the curve. We also show that the Alexander polynomial $Δ_C(t)$ of an irreducible curve $C=\{F=0\}\subset \mathbb P^2$ whose singularities are nodes and cusps is non-trivial if and only if there exist homogeneous polynomials $f$, $g$, and $h$ such that $f^3+g^2+Fh^6=0$. This is obtained as a consequence of the correspondence, described here, between Alexander polynomials and ranks of Mordell-Weil gr…
We discuss an algebro-geometric description of Witten's phases of N=2 theories and propose a definition of their elliptic genus provided some conditions on singularities of the phases are met. For Landau-Ginzburg phase one recovers elliptic genus of LG models proposed in physics literature in early 90s. For certain transitions between phases we derive invariance of elliptic genus from an equivariant form of McKay correspondence for elliptic genus. As special cases one obtains Landau-Giznburg/Calabi-Yau correspondence for elliptic genus of weighted homogeneous potentials as well as certain hybr…
In this article we study Cohen-Macaulay modules over one-dimensional hypersurface singularities and the relationship with the representation theory of associative algebras using methods of cluster tilting theory. We give a criterion for existence of cluster tilting objects and their complete description by homological methods, using higher almost split sequences and results from birational geometry. We obtain a large class of 2-CY tilted algebras which are finite dimensional symmetric and satisfy $τ^2=\id$. In particular, we compute 2-CY tilted algebras for simple and minimally elliptic curve …
