To every elliptic Calabi-Yau threefold with a section $X$ there can be associated a Lie group $G$ and a representation $ρ$ of that group. The group is determined from the Weierstrass model, which has singularities that are generically rational double points; these double points lead to local factors of $G$ which are either the corresponding A-D-E groups or some associated non-simply laced groups.
The representation $ρ$ is a sum of representations coming from the local factors of $G$, and of other representations which can be associated to the points at which the singularities are worse than generic.
This construction first arose in physics, and the requirement of anomaly cancellation in the associated physical theory makes some surprising predictions about the connection between $X$ and $ρ$. In particular, an explicit formula (in terms of $ρ$) for the Euler characteristic of $X$ is predicted. We give a purely mathematical proof of that formula in this paper, introducing along the way a new invariant of elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds. We also verify the other geometric predictions which are consequences of anomaly cancellation, under some (mild) hypotheses about the types of singularities which occur.
As a byproduct we also discover a novel relation between the Coxeter number and the rank in the case of the simply laced groups in the ``exceptional series'' studied by Deligne.
We determine several classes of smooth complex projective surfaces on which Zariski decomposition can be combined with vanishing theorems to yield cohomology formulae for all line bundles. The obtained formulae express cohomologies in terms of divisor class intersections, and are adapted to the decomposition of the effective cone into Zariski chambers. In particular, we show this occurs on generalised del Pezzo surfaces, toric surfaces, and K3 surfaces. In the second part we use these surface results to derive formulae for all line bundle cohomology on a simple class of elliptically fibered Ca…
We study the existence and properties of birationally equivalent models for elliptically fibered varieties. In particular these have either the structure of Mori fiber spaces or, assuming some standard conjectures, minimal models with a Zariski decomposition compatible with the elliptic fibration. We prove relations between the birational invariants of the elliptically fibered variety, the base of the fibration and of its Jacobian.

Elliptic and genus one fibered Calabi-Yau spaces play a prominent role in string theory and mathematics. In this article we discuss a class of genus one fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds with 5-sections from various perspectives. In algebraic geometry, such Calabi-Yaus can be constructed as complete intersections in Grassmannian fibrations and as Pfaffian varieties. These constructions naturally fit into the framework of homological projective duality and lead to dual pairs of Calabi-Yaus. From a physics perspective, these spaces can be realised as low-energy configurations ("phases") of gauged li…

Over a perfect field, we determine the sheaf of $\mathbb{A}^1$-connected components of a class of threefolds given by the Blow-up of a variety admitting a $\mathbb{P}^1$-fibration over either an $\mathbb{A}^1$-rigid or a non-uniruled surface, along a smooth curve. As a consequence, we verify that the sheaf of $\mathbb{A}^1$-connected components for such varieties is $\mathbb{A}^1$-invariant.
We find through a systematic analysis that all but 29,223 of the 473.8 million 4D reflexive polytopes found by Kreuzer and Skarke have a 2D reflexive subpolytope. Such a subpolytope is generally associated with the presence of an elliptic or genus one fibration in the corresponding birational equivalence class of Calabi-Yau threefolds. This extends the growing body of evidence that most Calabi-Yau threefolds have an elliptically fibered phase.
We define an iterative construction that produces a family of elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau $n$-folds with section from a family of elliptic Calabi-Yau varieties of one dimension lower. Parallel to the geometric construction, we iteratively obtain for each family with a point of maximal unipotent monodromy, normalized to be at t=0, its Picard-Fuchs operator and a closed-form expression for the period holomorphic at t=0, through a generalization of the classical Euler transform for hypergeometric functions. In particular, our construction yields one-parameter families of elliptically fibered …
In this paper we study compactifications of the ${\cal N}=2$ heterotic $E_8\times E_8$ string on $(K3\times T^2)/\mathbb{Z}_3$ with various gauge backgrounds and calculate the topological couplings in the effective supergravity action that arise from one-loop amplitudes. We then identify candidates for dual type IIA compactifications on Calabi-Yau threefolds and compare the heterotic results with the corresponding topological string amplitudes. We find that the dual Calabi-Yau geometries are $K3$ fibrations that are also genus one fibered with three-sections. Moreover, we show that the interse…
We show that the suspended pinch point can be seen as an elliptically fibered variety with singular fibers of type I$_2$ over codimension-one points of the base and a torsionless Mordell--Weil group of rank one. In the F-theory algorithm, this corresponds to a Lie group $SU(2)\times U(1)$. We also identify the matter content as given by the direct sum of the adjoint representation (with zero U($1$)-charge) and the fundamental representation with U($1$)-charge $\pm 1$. We then study the geometry of an SU($2$)$\times$U($1$)-model given by a compact elliptically fibered variety with the singulari…
We find that for many Calabi-Yau threefolds with elliptic or genus one fibrations mirror symmetry factorizes between the fiber and the base of the fibration. In the simplest examples, the generic CY elliptic fibration over any toric base surface $B$ that supports an elliptic Calabi-Yau threefold has a mirror that is an elliptic fibration over a dual toric base surface $\tilde{B}$ that is related through toric geometry to the line bundle $-6K_B$. The Kreuzer-Skarke database includes all these examples and gives a wide range of other more complicated constructions where mirror symmetry also fact…
The topological vertex is a universal series which can be regarded as an object in combinatorics, representation theory, geometry, or physics. It encodes the combinatorics of 3D partitions, the action of vertex operators on Fock space, the Donaldson-Thomas theory of toric Calabi-Yau threefolds, or the open string partition function of $\mathbb{C}^3$. We prove several identities in which a sum over terms involving the topological vertex is expressed as a closed formula, often a product of simple terms, closely related to Fourier expansions of Jacobi forms. We use purely combinatorial and repres…
