We present a new mode-sum regularization prescription for computing the vacuum polarization of a scalar field in static spherically-symmetric black hole spacetimes in odd dimensions. This is the first general and systematic approach to regularized vacuum polarization in higher dimensions. Remarkably, the regularization parameters can be computed in closed form in arbitrary dimensions and for arbitrary metric function $f(r)$. In fact, we show that in spite of the increasing severity and number of the divergences to be regularized, the method presented is mostly agnostic to the number of dimensions. Finally, as an explicit example of our method, we show plots for vacuum polarization in the Schwarzschild-Tangherlini spacetime for odd $d=5,...,11$.

We present a mode-sum regularization prescription for computing the vacuum polarization of a scalar field in static spherically-symmetric black hole spacetimes in even dimensions. This is the first general and systematic approach to regularized vacuum polarization in higher even dimensions, building upon a previous scheme we developed for odd dimensions. Things are more complicated here since the even-dimensional propagator possesses logarithmic singularities which must be regularized. However, in spite of this complication, the regularization parameters can be computed in closed form in arbit…
A definite form for the boundary term that produces the finiteness of both the conserved quantities and Euclidean action for any Lovelock gravity with AdS asymptotics is presented. This prescription merely tells even from odd bulk dimensions, regardless the particular theory considered, what is valid even for Einstein-Hilbert and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet AdS gravity. The boundary term is a given polynomial of the boundary extrinsic and intrinsic curvatures (also referred to as Kounterterms series). Only the coupling constant of the boundary term changes accordingly, such that it always preserves …
We construct new electrically charged solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations with negative cosmological constant in general odd dimensions $d=2n+3 \geq 5$. They correspond to higher dimensional generalizations of the squashed black hole solutions, which were known so far only in five dimensions. We explore numerically the general properties of such classical solutions and, using a counterterm prescription, we compute their conserved charges and discuss their thermodynamics.
We show that stationary, asymptotically flat solutions of the electro-vacuum Einstein equations are analytic at $i^0$, for a large family of gauges, in odd space-time dimensions higher than seven. The same is true in space-time dimension five for static vacuum solutions with non-vanishing mass.
In this paper, we find the teleparallel version of the Levi-Civita metric and obtain tetrad and the torsion fields. The tensor, vector and the axial-vector parts of the torsion tensor are evaluated. It is found that the vector part lies along the radial direction only while the axial-vector vanishes everywhere because the metric is diagonal. Further, we use the teleparallel version of M$\ddot{o}$ller, Einstein, Landau-Lifshitz and Bergmann-Thomson prescriptions to find the energy-momentum distribution of this metric and compare the results with those already found in General Relativity. It is …
We study the effect of a non-trivial vacuum prescription on warm inflation observables, namely the power spectrum of the comoving curvature perturbation. Non-trivial choice of vacuum, can provide information about trans-Planckian physics. Traditionally, the initial condition for inflation is chosen to be the usual Bunch-Davies vacuum. Another more reasonable choice of vacuum is the so-called $α$-vacua. Because the duration of inflation is not infinite, as it is assumed in the Bunch-Davies case, imposing the initial condition at infinite past is not sensible and one must utilize another vacuum …
A finite action principle for Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet AdS gravity is presented. The boundary term, which is different for even and odd dimensions, is a functional of the boundary metric, intrinsic curvature and extrinsic curvature. For even dimensions, the boundary term corresponds to the maximal Chern form of the spacetime, and the asymptotic AdS condition for the curvature suffices for the well-posedness of this action. For odd dimensions, the action is stationary under a boundary condition on the variation of the extrinsic curvature. The background-independent Noether charges associated to as…
Recently, Bañados, Teitelboim and Zanelli obtained spherically symmetric black hole solutions in a particular class of Einstein--Lovelock gravity. We derive the propagator in an exact form for a conformal scalar field in the asymptotically anti-de Sitter black hole spacetime so as to study the quantum effects of the scalar fields. We treat the cases in odd dimensions in this paper. We calculate the vacuum expectation value of $\langleφ^2\rangle$ and show its dependence on the radial coordinate for the five-dimensional case as an example.
In-In perturbation theory is a vital tool for cosmology and nonequilibrium physics. Here, we reconcile an apparent conflict between two of its important aspects with particular relevance to De Sitter/inflationary contexts: (i) the need to slightly deform unitary time evolution with an i*epsilon prescription that projects the free ("Bunch-Davies") vacuum onto the interacting vacuum and renders vertex integrals well-defined, and (ii) Weinberg's "nested commutator" reformulation of in-in perturbation theory which makes manifest the constraints of causality within expectation values of local opera…
We define a distinguished "ground state" or "vacuum" for a free scalar quantum field in a globally hyperbolic region of an arbitrarily curved spacetime. Our prescription is motivated by the recent construction of a quantum field theory on a background causal set using only knowledge of the retarded Green's function. We generalize that construction to continuum spacetimes and find that it yields a distinguished vacuum or ground state for a non-interacting, massive or massless scalar field. This state is defined for all compact regions and for many noncompact ones. In a static spacetime we find …
We investigate quantum effects on topological black hole space-times within the framework of quantum field theory on curved space-times. Considering a quantum scalar field, we extend a recent mode-sum regularization prescription for the computation of the renormalized vacuum polarization to asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes with nonspherical event horizon topology. In particular, we calculate the vacuum polarization for a massless, conformally-coupled scalar field on a four-dimensional topological Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter black hole background, comparing our results with those for …
In the in-/out-state formalism we find the exact one-loop effective action of a massive scalar field in the global coordinates of de Sitter spaces, which is a gravity analog of the Heisenberg-Euler action in QED. The nonperturbative effective action, modulo the angular momentum sum, has an imaginary part in all even dimensions, but the imaginary part of the effective action is zero in all odd dimensions. However, in the zeta-function regularization for angular momenta, the weak-curvature expansion of the renormalized effective action vanishes in any even dimension, while the real part is finit…
We consider extremal black hole solutions to the vacuum Einstein equations in dimensions greater than five. We prove that the near-horizon geometry of any such black hole must possess an SO(2,1) symmetry in a special case where one has an enhanced rotational symmetry group. We construct examples of vacuum near-horizon geometries using the extremal Myers-Perry black holes and boosted Myers-Perry strings. The latter lead to near-horizon geometries of black ring topology, which in odd spacetime dimensions have the correct number rotational symmetries to describe an asymptotically flat black objec…
As an alternative to the Dirichlet counterterms prescription, I introduce the concept of Kounterterms as the boundary terms with explicit dependence on the extrinsic curvature K_{ij} that regularize the AdS gravity action. Instead of a Dirichlet boundary condition on the metric, a suitable choice of the boundary conditions --compatible with any asymptotically AdS (AAdS) spacetime-- ensures a finite action principle for all odd dimensions. Background-independent conserved quantities are obtained as Noether charges associated to asymptotic symmetries and their general expression appears naturall…
We present a 4-dimensional back reaction analysis of de Sitter space for a conformally coupled scalar field in the presence of vacuum energy initialized in the Bunch-Davies vacuum. In contrast to the usual semi-classical prescription, as the source term in the Friedmann equations we use expectation values where the unobservable information hidden by the cosmological event horizon has been neglected i.e. coarse grained over. It is shown that in this approach the energy-momentum is precisely thermal with constant temperature despite the dilution from the expansion of space due to a flux of energ…
We report a non-trivial feature of the vacuum structure of free massive or massless Dirac fields in the hyperbolic de Sitter spacetime. Here we have two causally disconnected regions, say $R$ and $L$ separated by another region, $C$. We are interested in the field theory in $R\cup L$ to understand the long range quantum correlations between $R$ and $L$. There are local modes of the Dirac field having supports individually either in $R$ or $L$, as well as global modes found via analytically continuing the $R$ modes to $L$ and vice versa. However, we show that unlike the case of a scalar field, …
The vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of the field squared and energy-momentum tensor for a massless scalar field are investigated in the Milne universe with general number of spatial dimensions. The vacuum state depends on the choice of the mode functions in the canonical quantization procedure and we assume that the field is prepared in the conformal vacuum. As the first step an integral representation for the difference of the Wightman functions corresponding to the conformal and Minkowski vacua is derived. The mean field squared and energy-momentum tensor are obtained in the coincidence lim…
We initiate a study of cosmology within the framework of Maldacena's AdS/CFT correspondence. We present a comprehensive analysis of the classical motion of a charged domain wall that separates an external Reissner-Nordstrom region of spacetime (with small or vanishing cosmological constant) from an internal de-Sitter region. The possible associated spacetime diagrams are drawn, although in the classical case, an unambiguous prediction of what occurs at late times in the interior region is not possible, since singularities and Cauchy horizons form. We argue that, when the asymptotic region is a…
In the framework of generally covariant (pre-metric) electrodynamics (``charge & flux electrodynamics''), the Maxwell equations can be formulated in terms of the electromagnetic excitation $H=({\cal D}, {\cal H})$ and the field strength $F=(E,B)$. If the spacetime relation linking $H$ and $F$ is assumed to be {\em linear}, the electromagnetic properties of (vacuum) spacetime are encoded into 36 components of the vacuum constitutive tensor density $χ$. We study the propagation of electromagnetic waves and find that the metric of spacetime emerges eventually from the principal part $^{(1)}χ$ of …
This paper elaborates the problem of energy-momentum in the framework of teleparallel equivalent of General Relativity. For this purpose, we consider energy-momentum prescription derived from the integral form of the constraint equations developed in the Hamiltonian formulation of the teleparallel equivalent of General Relativity. We use this technique to investigate energy-momentum of stationary axisymmetric Einstein-Maxwell solutions and cosmic string spacetimes. The angular momentum, gravitational and matter energy-momentum fluxes of these spacetimes are also evaluated. It is concluded that…
Motivated by a recent work by Terashima (Phys. Rev. D60 084001), we revisit the fluctuation-dissipation (FD) relation between the dissipative coefficient of a detector and the vacuum noise of fields in curved spacetime. In an explicit manner we show that the dissipative coefficient obtained from classical equations of motion of the detector and the scalar (or Dirac) field satisfies the FD relation associated with the vacuum noise of the field, which demonstrates that the Terashima's prescription works properly in the $N$-dimensional de Sitter spacetime. This practice is useful not only to reco…
For observers in curved spacetimes, elements of the dual space of the set of linearized Poincaré transformations from an observer's tangent space to itself can be naturally interpreted as local linear and angular momenta. We present an operational procedure by which observers can measure such quantities using only information about the spacetime curvature at their location. When applied by observers near spacelike or null infinity in stationary, vacuum, asymptotically flat spacetimes, there is a sense in which the procedure yields the well-defined linear and angular momenta of the spacetime. W…
In this note, we consider the response of a uniformly accelerated monopole detector that is coupled non-linearly to the nth power of a quantum scalar field in (D+1)-dimensional flat spacetime. We show that, when (D+1) is even, the response of the detector in the Minkowski vacuum is characterized by a Bose-Einstein factor for all n. Whereas, when (D+1) is odd, we find that a Fermi-Dirac factor appears in the detector response when n is odd, but a Bose-Einstein factor arises when n is even.
Initial conditions given on a spacelike, static slice of a non-globally hyperbolic spacetime may not define the fates of classical and quantum fields uniquely. Such lack of global hyperbolicity is a well-known property of the anti-de Sitter solution and led many authors to question how is it possible to develop a quantum field theory on this spacetime. Wald and Ishibashi took a step towards the healing of that causal issue when considering the propagation of scalar fields on AdS. They proposed a systematic procedure to obtain a physically consistent dynamical evolution. Their prescription reli…
It is well known that the vacuum in the Einstein gravity, which is linear in the Riemann curvature, is trivial in the critical (2+1=3) dimension because vacuum solution is flat. It turns out that this is true in general for any odd critical $d=2n+1$ dimension where $n$ is the degree of homogeneous polynomial in Riemann defining its higher order analogue whose trace is the nth order Lovelock polynomial. This is the "curvature" for nth order pure Lovelock gravity as the trace of its Bianchi derivative gives the corresponding analogue of the Einstein tensor \cite{bianchi}. Thus the vacuum in the …
We consider the response of a uniformly accelerated monopole detector that is coupled non-linearly to the nth power of a quantum scalar field in (D+1)-dimensional flat spacetime. We emphasize the point that, since, along the accelerated trajectory, the Wightman function and, as a result, the (2n)-p…
The regularized vacuum fluctuation related to a conformally coupled massless scalar field defined on a space-time with dynamical horizon is computed with respect a radially moving observer in a generic flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker space-time. Two simple measurement prescriptions are given in order to remove the ambiguity associated with the short distance singularity of the correlation function. In some cases, it turns out that one is dealing with a quantum thermometer, recovering a proposal due to Buchholzet al. in order to determine local temperature in the framework of quantum field theo…
We consider the response of a uniformly accelerated monopole detector that is coupled to a superposition of an odd and an even power of a quantized, massless scalar field in flat spacetime in arbitrary dimensions. We show that, when the field is assumed to be in the Minkowski vacuum, the response of the detector is characterized by a Bose-Einstein factor in even spacetime dimensions, whereas a Bose-Einstein as well as a Fermi-Dirac factor appear in the detector response when the dimension of spacetime is odd. Moreover, we find that, it is possible to interpolate between the Bose-Einstein and t…
