Given a finite directed graph with $n$ vertices, we define a metric $d_G$ on $\mathbb{F}_q^n$, where $\mathbb{F}_q$ is the finite field with $q$ elements. The weight of a word is defined as the number of vertices that can be reached by a directed path starting at the support of the vector. Two canonical forms, which do not affect the metric, are given to each graph. Based on these forms we characterize each such metric. We further use these forms to prove that two graphs with different canonical forms yield different metrics. Efficient algorithms to check if a set of metric weights define a metric based on a graph are given. We provide tight bounds on the number of metric weights required to reconstruct the metric. Furthermore, we give a complete description of the group of linear isometries of the graph metrics and a characterization of the graphs for which every linear code admits a $G$-canonical decomposition. Considering those graphs, we are able to derive an expression of the packing radius of linear codes in such metric spaces. Finally, given a directed graph which determines a hierarchical poset, we present sufficient and necessary conditions to ensure the validity of the MacWilliams Identity and the MacWilliams Extension Property.
Quantum deletions, which are harder to correct than erasure errors, occur in many realistic settings. It is therefore pertinent to develop quantum coding schemes for quantum deletion channels. To date, not much is known about which explicit quantum error correction codes can combat quantum deletions. We note that {\em any} permutation-invariant quantum code that has a distance of $t+1$ can correct $t$ quantum deletions for any positive integer $t$ in both the qubit and the qudit setting. Leveraging on coding properties of permutation-invariant quantum codes under erasure errors, we derive corr…
Sparse superposition codes were originally proposed as a capacity-achieving communication scheme over the gaussian channel, whose coding matrices were made of i.i.d. gaussian entries. We extend this coding scheme to more generic ensembles of rotational invariant coding matrices with arbitrary spectrum, which include the gaussian ensemble as a special case. We further introduce and analyse a decoder based on vector approximate message-passing (VAMP).Our main findings, based on both a standard replica symmetric potential theory and state evolution analysis, are the superiority of certain structur…
We recently showed in [1] the superiority of certain structured coding matrices ensembles (such as partial row-orthogonal) for sparse superposition codes when compared with purely random matrices with i.i.d. entries, both information-theoretically and under practical vector approximate message-passing decoding. Here we generalize this result to binary input channels under generalized vector approximate message-passing decoding [2].We focus on specific binary output channels for concreteness but our analysis based on the replica symmetric method from statistical physics applies to any memoryles…
In this work we consider discrete-time multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) linear-quadratic-Gaussian (LQG) control where the feedback consists of variable length binary codewords. To simplify the decoder architecture, we enforce a strict prefix constraint on the codewords. We develop a data compression architecture that provably achieves a near minimum time-average expected bitrate for a fixed constraint on the LQG performance. The architecture conforms to the strict prefix constraint and does not require time-varying lossless source coding, in contrast to the prior art.
This paper deals with embedded index coding problem (EICP), introduced by A. Porter and M. Wootters, which is a decentralized communication problem among users with side information. An alternate definition of the parameter minrank of an EICP, which has reduced computational complexity compared to the existing definition, is presented. A graphical representation for an EICP is given using directed bipartite graphs, called bipartite problem graph, and the side information alone is represented using an undirected bipartite graph called the side information bipartite graph. Inspired by the well-s…

This paper investigates a large unitarily invariant system (LUIS) involving a unitarily invariant sensing matrix, an arbitrary fixed signal distribution, and forward error control (FEC) coding. Several area properties are established based on the state evolution of orthogonal approximate message passing (OAMP) in an un-coded LUIS. Under the assumptions that the state evolution for joint OAMP and FEC decoding is correct and the replica method is reliable, we analyze the achievable rate of OAMP. We prove that OAMP reaches the constrained capacity predicted by the replica method of the LUIS with …
