Topological superconductors are one of the most actively studied materials these days. They are a promising candidate for hosting Majorana fermions either on their boundaries or in vortex cores. Detecting 1D edge current around the periphery of a 2D $p_x + ip_y$ superconductor would be a hallmark signature of topological superconductivity, but Majorana fermions are not amenable to electronic current measurements due to their charge neutral nature. Thermal conductivity measurements, such as thermal Hall effect, are alternatively proposed, but material synthesis must come first. Superfluid $^3$He-$A$, on the other hand, is a known $p_x + ip_y$ superfluid whose edge current can be measured with a gyroscopic technique. Here, we propose a microelectromechanical system based gyroscope that will not only have enough signal sensitivity to measure the edge current but also be used to observe dimensionality induced phase transitions between different topological superfluids.
Topological superfluid $^3$He, with unconventional spin-triplet p-wave pairing, provides a model system for topological superconductors, which have attracted significant interest through potential applications in topologically protected quantum computing. In topological insulators and quantum Hall systems, the surface/edge states, arising from bulk-surface correspondence and the momentum space topology of the band structure, are robust. Here we demonstrate that in topological superconductors the surface Andreev bound states, which depend on the momentum space topology of the emergent order par…
Realising and probing topological superfluids is a key goal for fundamental science, with exciting technological promises. Here, we show that chiral $p_x+ip_y$ pairing in a two-dimensional topological superfluid can be detected through circular dichroism, namely, as a difference in the excitation rates induced by a clockwise and counter-clockwise circular drive. For weak pairing, this difference is to a very good approximation determined by the Chern number of the superfluid, whereas there is a non-topological contribution scaling as the superfluid gap squared that becomes signifiant for stron…
The direction of the orbital angular momentum of the $B$-phase of superfluid $^3$He can be controlled by engineering the anisotropy of the silica aerogel framework within which it is imbibed. In this work, we report our discovery of an unusual and abrupt `orbital-flop' transition of the superfluid angular momentum between orientations perpendicular and parallel to the anisotropy axis. The transition has no hysteresis, warming or cooling, as expected for a continuous thermodynamic transition, and is not the result of a competition between strain and magnetic field. This demonstrates the spontan…
We systematically investigate the topological properties of spin polarized Rydberg-dressed fermionic atoms loaded in a bilayer optical lattice. Through tuning the Rydberg coupling strength and the inter-layer tunneling amplitude, we identify different types of topological superfluid states generated from the inter-layer pairing and relative gauge phase modulation of the couples 2D $p$-wave superfluids. These phases includes gapped/gapless with/without time reversal symmetry. One of the most interesting states is a gapless paired topological superfluid with both the time-reversal symmetry and p…
Attractive interaction between spinless fermions in a two-dimensional lattice drives the formation of a topological superfluid. But the topological phase is dynamically unstable towards phase separation when the system has a high density of states and large interaction strength. This limits the critical temperature to an experimentally challenging regime where, for example, even ultracold atoms and molecules in optical lattices would struggle to realize the topological superfluid. We propose that the introduction of a weaker longer-range repulsion, in addition to the short-range attraction bet…
We systematically investigate the ground state phase diagram and the finite temperature phase transitions for a Rydberg-dressed Fermi gas loaded in a bilayer optical lattice. When an effective finite-ranged attraction is induced, our self-consistent mean-field calculation shows that the gapped topological ( $p$-wave) superfluids in each layer are coupled together by the $s$-wave pairing in an intermediate inter-layer distance with a spontaneously modulated phases between these two order parameters. The obtained ground state is a gapless topological superfluid with quantized topological charges…
Majorana zero modes are predicted to exist in p+ip (either inherent or effective due to proximity effect) superfluids and are proposed to be used for constructing topological qubits for topologically protected quantum computing. Existing theories on the subject are mostly based on BCS mean-field theory which breaks particle number conservation (U(1) symmetry). More specifically, Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations are used to derive Majorana zero modes and their braiding properties. The broken particle number conservation is, on the other hand, respected in any fermionic condensed matter syst…
The realization of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in ultracold atoms has triggered an intensive exploring of topological superfluids in the degenerate Fermi gases based on mean-field theory, which has not yet been reported in experiments. Here, we demonstrate the topological phase transitions in the system via the numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo method. Without prior assumptions, our unbiased real-space calculation shows that spin-orbit coupling can stabilize an unconventional pairing in the weak SOC regime, in which the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov pairing coexists with the Bardeen-Coope…
The topological superfluids with Majorana zero modes have not yet been realized in ultracold atoms with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Here we show that these phases can be realized with an artificial gauge potential, which can be regarded as a site-dependent rotating Zeeman field. This potential breaks the inversion symmetry and plays the same role as Rashba spin-orbit coupling. In the inverted bands, this model can open a proper parameter regime for topological superfluids. Strikingly, we find that the interaction near the Fermi surface is dominated by the dispersion scattering in the same band…
We investigated the superconducting properties of the topological superconductor $α$--PdBi$_2$ at ambient and external pressures up to 1.77~GPa using muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) experiments. The ambient pressure measurements evince a fully gapped $s$-wave superconducting state in the bulk of the specimen. AC magnetic susceptibility and $μ$SR measurements manifest a continuous suppression of $T_{\rm c}$ with increasing pressure. In parallel, we observed a significant decrease of superfluid density by $\sim$20\% upon application of external pressure. Remarkably, the superfluid density follows lin…
${}^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids realized in neutron stars are the largest topological quantum matters in our Universe. We establish the existence and stability of non-Abelian half-quantum vortices (HQVs) in ${}^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids with strong magnetic fields. Using a self-consistent microscopic approach, we find that a singly quantized vortex is energetically destabilized into a pair of two non-Abelian HQVs owing to the strongly spin-orbit-coupled pairing. We find a topologically protected Majorana fermion on each HQV, thereby providing two-fold non-Abelian anyons characterized by both Majorana fe…
The two-dimensional spin-imbalanced Fermi gas subject to s-wave pairing and spin-orbit coupling is considered a promising platform for realizing a topological chiral-p-wave superfluid. In the BCS limit of s-wave pairing, i.e., when Cooper pairs are only weakly bound, the system enters the topological phase via a second-order transition driven by increasing the Zeeman spin-splitting energy. Stronger attractive two-particle interactions cause the system to undergo the BCS-BEC crossover, in the course of which the topological transition becomes first-order. As a result, topological and nontopolog…
We show that pairing in an ultracold Fermi gas under spin-orbital-angular-momentum coupling (SOAMC) can acquire topological characters encoded in the quantized angular degrees of freedom. The resulting topological superfluid is the angular analog of its counterpart in a one-dimensional Fermi gas with spin-orbit coupling, but characterized by a Zak phase defined in the angular-momentum space. Upon tuning the SOAMC parameters, a topological phase transition occurs, which is accompanied by the closing of the quasiparticle excitation gap. Remarkably, a topological vortex state can also be stabiliz…
Assisted by general symmetry arguments and a many-body invariant, we introduce a phase of matter that constitutes a topological SO(5) superfluid. Key to this finding is the realization of an exactly solvable model that displays some similarities with a minimal model of superfluid $^3$He. We study its quantum phase diagram and correlations, and find exotic superfluid as well as metallic phases in the repulsive sector. At the critical point separating trivial and nontrivial superfluid phases, our Hamiltonian reduces to the globally SO(5)-symmetric Gaudin model with a degenerate ground manifold t…
Twodimensional spin-orbit-coupled Fermi gases subject to s-wave pairing can be driven into a topological phase by increasing the Zeeman spin splitting beyond a critical value. In the topological phase, the system exhibits the hallmarks of chiral p-wave superfluidity, including exotic Majorana excitations. Previous theoretical studies of this realization of a twodimensional topological Fermi superfluid have focused on the BCS regime where the s-wave Cooper pairs are only weakly bound and, hence, the induced chiral p-wave order parameter has a small magnitude. Motivated by the goal to identify p…
Spin-1 bosons on a 1-dimensional chain, at incommensurate filling with anti-ferromagnetic spin interaction between neighboring bosons, may form a spin-1 boson condensed state that contains both gapless charge and spin excitations. We argue that the spin-1 boson condensed state is unstable, and will become one of two superfluids by opening a spin gap. One superfluid must have a spin-1 ground state on a ring if it contains an odd number of bosons and has no degenerate states at the chain end. The other superfluid has a spin-0 ground state on a ring for any numbers of bosons and has a spin-$\frac…
While regular flat bands are good for enhancing the density of states and hence the gap, they are detrimental to the superfluid weight. We show that the predicted nontrivial topology of the two lowest flat bands of twisted bilayer graphene plays an important role in the enhancement of the superfluid weight and hence of superconductivity. We derive the superfluid weight (phase stiffness) of the TBLG superconducting flat bands with a uniform pairing, and show that it can be expressed as an integral of the Fubini-Study metric of the flat bands. This mirrors results already obtained for nonzero Ch…
This article provides an overview, primarily from an experimental perspective, of recent progress and future prospects in using helium to realize a range of quantum materials of generic interest, by "top-down" and "bottom-up" nanotechnology. We can grow model systems to realise new quantum states of matter, and explore key issues in condensed matter physics. In the language of cold atomic gases, two dimensional and confined 3He and 4He provide "quantum simulators", with the potential to uncover new emergent quantum states. These include: strictly 2D Fermi system with Mott-Hubbard transition; i…
