Competitive effects of nuclear deformation and density dependence of $Λ\!N$-interaction in $Λ$ binding energies $B_Λ$ of hypernuclei are studied systematically on the basis of the baryon-baryon interaction model ESC including many-body effects. By using the $Λ\!N$ G-matrix interaction derived from ESC, we perform microscopic calculations of $B_Λ$ in $Λ$ hypernuclei within the framework of the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics under the averaged-density approximation. The calculated values of $B_Λ$ reproduce experimental data within a few hundred keV in the wide mass regions from 9 to 51. It is found that competitive effects of nuclear deformation and density dependence of $Λ\!N$-interaction work decisively for fine tuning of $B_Λ$ values.
Mass number dependence of the nuclear radii is closely related to the nuclear matter properties. It is known that the most of nuclei exhibit some deformation. We discuss how the nuclear density profile is modified by the nuclear deformation to elucidate the enhancement mechanism of the nuclear radii through a systematic investigation of neutron-rich Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ar, Ti, Cr, and Fe isotopes. Skyrme-Hartree-Fock calculations are performed in a three-dimensional Cartesian grid to describe the nuclear deformation in a non-empirical way. The role of the nuclear deformation on the nuclear density …
The direct radiative capture process is well described by the spherical potential model. In order for the model to explain direct captures more accurately, the effect of the nuclear deformation has been added and analyzed in this work, since most nucleuses are not spherical. The results imply that the nuclear deformation largely affects the direct capture and should be taken into account during discussing direct capture reactions.
Using a hadron-string cascade model, JPCIAE, we study the effect of nuclear deformation on J/Psi suppression in the collision of uranium nuclei at 200A GeV/c. We find that the J/Psi survival probability is much smaller if the major axes of both deformed nuclei are along the beam direction than if they are perpendicular to the beam direction.
A numerical method close to the Strutinsky procedure (but better) is proposed to calculate the deformation energy of nuclei. Quadrupole (triaxial) deformations are considered. Theoretical as well as practical aspects of the method are reviewed in this paper. A complete fortran program illustrates the feasibility of the method.
The roles of nuclear deformation and neutron transfer in sub-barrier capture process are studied within the quantum diffusion approach. The change of the deformations of colliding nuclei with neutron exchange can crucially influence the sub-barrier fusion. The comparison of the calculated capture cross section and the measured fusion cross section in various reactions at extreme sub- barrier energies gives us information about the fusion and quasifission.
The paper does not take into account previous work where the effect they discuss is explored in detail. It is known from this previous work that the approach is incomplete.
We analyze the nearest neighbor spacing distributions of low-lying 2+ levels of even-even nuclei. We grouped the nuclei into classes defined by the quadrupole deformation parameter (Beta2). We calculate the nearest neighbor spacing distributions for each class. Then, we determine the chaoticity parameter for each class with the help of the Bayesian inference method. We compare these distributions to a formula that describes the transition to chaos by varying a tuning parameter. This parameter appears to depend in a non-trivial way on the nuclear deformation, and takes small values indicating r…
Using a phenomenological KN potential which reproduces $Λ$(1405) as an I=0 bound state of KN, we investigated deeply bound kaonic nuclei, ppnK$^-$ and $^8$BeK$^-$, with the method of Antisymmetrized Molecular Dynamics. Our calculations show that strongly bound kaonic nuclear systems with unusual exotic structures are formed around the K$^-$, which attracts the surrounding nucleons to an extremely high-density assembly and induces a proton-neutron separation, ``isovector deformation''.
Gamow-Teller and Fermi transitions are considered in a HF+BCS+pnQRPA theoretical framework. We show here how Gamow-Teller strength distributions can be used in a search for signatures of nuclear deformation in neutron deficient Pb, Hg and Po isotopes, as well as how Fermi transitions allow us to quantify isospin mixing in some even Kr isotopes around N=Z.
We investigate the influence of the nuclear deformation on the decay rates of some cluster emission processes. The interaction between the daughter and the cluster is given by a double folding potential including quadrupole and hexadecupole deformed densities of both fragments. The nuclear part of the nucleus-nucleus interaction is density dependent and at small distances a repulsive core in the potential will occur. In the frame of the WKB-approximation the assault frequency of the cluster will depend on the geometric properties of the potential pocket whereas the penetrability will be sensit…
A new approach to the old problem of the predominance of prolate deformations among well deformed nuclei is proposed within the shell model framework. The parameter space is explored using the ensemble of random rotationally-invariant interactions. Subsets with rotational energy ratio $E(4^{+})/E(2^{+})$ and the rigid-rotor relation between the quadrupole moment $Q(2^{+})$ and the transition probability $B(E2;2^{+}\to 0^{+}))$ are found exhibiting prolate predominance. We identify matrix elements of the effective forces responsible for the predominance of prolate deformation.
The effect of an axially symmetric hexadecapole term is investigated in a strongly deformed quadrupole potential. While the system is nonintegrable and shows significant chaotic behaviour classically, the quantum mechanical treatment not only produces a general smoothing effect with regard to chaos but even yields a pronounced shell structure at certain hexadecapole strength parameter values for oblate and prolate deformation.
Elastic electron scattering from oriented odd-Aaxially deformed nuclei is studied in the plane-wave Born approximation. The nuclear structure is described within a microscopic selfconsistent Skyrme deformed Hartree-Fock approximation with pairing correlations. The interference form factors between monopole and quadrupole Coulomb terms that characterize the nuclear response with aligned nuclear targets are shown to increase or decrease the unpolarized cross-section, depending on the sign of the quadrupole deformation. This feature provides valuable information on the nuclear deformation that ca…
Effects of spin polarization on the structure of symmetric nuclear matter and pure neutron matter are investigated. We show that the spin polarization induces a deformation of the Fermi spheres for nucleons with spin parallel and opposite to the polarization axes. This feature can be related to the structure of the one pion exchange contribution to a realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction. While the anisotropies in the momentum distribution lower the energy of the system by small amount, the associated variations of the single particle energies with the angle between the polarization axis and t…
The two neutrino and neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{94,96}$Zr, $^{98,100}$Mo, $^{104}$Ru, $^{110}$Pd, $^{128,130}$Te and $^{150}$Nd isotopes for the $0^{+}\to 0^{+}$ transition is studied within the PHFB framework along with an effective two-body interaction consisting of pairing, quadrupole-quadrupole and hexadecapole-hexadecapole correlations. It is found that the effect of hexadecapolar correlations can be assimilated substantially as a renormalization of the quadrupole-quadrupole interaction. The effect of deformation on nuclear transition matrix elements is investigated by varying t…
Within the nuclear density functional theory (DFT) we study the effect of reflection-asymmetric shapes on ground-state binding energies and binding energy differences. To this end, we developed the new DFT solver AxialHFB that uses an approximate second-order gradient to solve the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations of superconducting DFT with the quasi-local Skyrme energy density functionals. Illustrative calculations are carried out for even-even isotopes of radium and thorium.
We consider the possibility that a quantum-mechanical off-center effect may be behind the deformed oblate and prolate shapes of nuclei in nuclear physics. In solid state physics, finite off-center displacements result from the mixing of electronic states through their coupling to vibrational (phonon) modes of appropriate symmetries. This is an example of fermion-boson interaction which may materialize in nuclear physics as well in the form of a coupling of nucleons to the pi-meson field. We carry out calculations to substantiate the proposal.
We analyze the ability of the three different Liquid Drop Mass (LDM) formulas to describe nuclear masses for nuclei in various deformation regions. Separating the 2149 measured nuclear species in eight sets with similar quadrupole deformations, we show that the masses of prolate deformed nuclei are better described than those of spherical ones. In fact, the prolate deformed nuclei are fitted with an RMS smaller than 750 keV, while for spherical and semi-magic species the RMS is always larger than 2000 keV. These results are found to be independent of pairing. The macroscopic sector of the Dufl…
A parametrization of octupole plus quadrupole deformation, in terms of intrinsic variables defined in the rest frame of the overall tensor of inertia, is presented and discussed. The model is valid for situations close to the axial symmetry, but non axial deformation parameters are not frozen to zero. The properties of the octupole excitations in the deformed Thorium isotopes Th-226, Th-228 are interpreted in the frame of this model. A tentative interpretation of octupole oscillations in nuclei close to the X(5) symmetry, in terms of an exactly separable potential, is also discussed.
The two neutrino double beta decay of $^{124,126}$Xe,$^{128,130}$Te, $ ^{130,132}$Ba and $^{150}$Nd isotopes is studied in the Projected Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (PHFB) model. Theoretical 2$ν$ $β^{-}β^{-}$ half-lives of $^{128,130}$Te, and $^{150}$Nd isotopes, and 2$νβ^{+}β^{+}$, 2$ν$ $β^{+}EC$ and 2$ν$ $ECEC$ for $ ^{124,126}$Xe and $^{130,132}$Ba nuclei are presented. Calculated quadrupolar transition probabilities B(E2: $0^+\to 2^+$), static quadrupole moments and $g$ factors in the parent and daughter nuclei reproduce the experimental information, validating the reliability of the model wav…
The M3Y-type semi-realistic interaction is applied to deformed nuclei for the first time. The constrained Hartree-Fock calculations assuming axial symmetry are implemented for the $N=20$ isotones $^{30}$Ne, $^{32}$Mg, $^{34}$Si and the $N=28$ isotones $^{40}$Mg, $^{42}$Si, $^{44}$S with the M3Y-P6 interaction. The results match the experimental data well. Effects of the realistic tensor force on the nuclear quadrupole deformation are investigated in relation to the loss of the $N=20$ and $28$ magic numbers. The tensor force is confirmed to favor the deformation for the $N=28$ nuclei owing to t…
We have performed a systematic study of the ground state for even-even 1,002 nuclei in which 28 octupole-deformed nuclei are found. The interplay between the spatial deformation and the pairing correlation, plays important roles in nuclear structure. Our model is based on the Skyrme Hartree-Fock plus BCS model represented in the three-dimensional Cartesian coordinate space which can describe any kind of nuclear shape. The quadrupole and octupole deformed nuclei appear in the mass region with characteristic neutron and proton numbers which are consistent with previous studies. In our results, t…
A set of moderately deformed $s-d$ shell nuclei is employed for testing the reliability of the nuclear ground state wave functions which are obtained in the context of a BCS approach and offer a simultaneous consideration of deformation and pairing correlations effects. In this method, the mean field is assumed to be an axially symmetric Woods-Saxon potential and the effective two-body interaction is a monopole pairing force. As quantities of main interest we have chosen the nuclear form factors, the occupancies of the active (surface) orbits and the Fermi sea depletion, which provide quite go…
An extended version of the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics to study structure of $p$-$sd$ shell hypernuclei is developed. By using an effective $ΛN$ interaction, we investigate energy curves of $^9_Λ$Be, $^{13}_Λ$C and $^{20,21}_Λ$Ne as function of nuclear quadrupole deformation. Change of nuclear deformation caused by $Λ$ particle is discussed. It is found that the $Λ$ in p-wave enhances nuclear deformation, while that in s-wave reduces it. This effect is most prominent in $^{13}_Λ$C. The possibility of the parity inversion in $^{20}_Λ$Ne is also examined.
Semiclassical analysis of shell structures in realistic nuclear potentials are presented using periodic-orbit theory. We adopted r^alpha potential model and examined classical-quantum correspondence using Fourier transformation technique. Spin-orbit coupling is also taken into account in the model Hamiltonian. Gross shell structure for a certain combination of surface diffuseness and spin-orbit parameters are investigated and its relation to pseudospin symmetry is discussed. Analysis of superdeformed shell structure in realistic model is also presented.
In this talk I will review the "state of the art" of the calculations of the nuclear matrix elements (NME) of the neutrinoless double beta decays for the nuclei 48Ca, 76Ge, 82Se, 124Sn, 128Te, 130Te and 136Xe in the framework of the Interacting Shell Model (ISM), and compare them with the NME's obtained using the Quasi-particle RPA approach (QRPA). I will also discuss the effect of the competition between the pairing and quadrupole correlations in the value of these NME's. In particular I will show that, as the difference in deformation between parent and grand daughter grows, the NME's of bot…
Based on the boson realization of the Euclidean algebras, it is shown that the five-dimensional Euclidean dynamical symmetry may emerge at the triple point of the shape phase diagram of the interacting boson model, which thus offers a symmetry-based understanding of this isolated point. It is further shown that the low-lying dynamics in $^{108}$Pd, $^{134}$Ba, $^{64}$Zn, and $^{114}$Cd may be dominated by the Euclidean dynamical symmetry.
The observed almost complete dominance of prolate over oblate deformations in the ground states of deformed even-even nuclei is related to the splitting of high $\ell$ "surface" orbits in the Nilsson diagram: on the oblate side the occurrence of numerous strongly avoided crossings which reduce the fanning out of the low $Λ$ orbits, while on the prolate side the same interactions increase the fanning out. It is further demonstrated that the prolate dominance is rather special for the restricted particle number of available nuclei and is not generic for finite systems with mean-field potentials …
Shape deformations and charge radii, basic properties of atomic nuclei, are influenced by both the global features of the nuclear force and the nucleonic shell structure. As functions of proton and neutron number, both quantities show regular patterns and, for nuclei away from magic numbers, they change very smoothly from nucleus to nucleus. In this paper, we explain how the local shell effects are impacting the statistical correlations between quadrupole deformations and charge radii in well-deformed even-even Er, Yb, and Hf isotopes. This implies, in turn, that sudden changes in correlations…
We have studied nuclear quadrupole deformation effects in deeply bound pionic atoms theoretically. We have evaluated the level shifts and widths of the hyperfine components using the first order perturbation theory and compared them with the effects of neutron skin. We conclude that the nuclear quadrupole deformation effects for deeply bound $1s$ and $2p$ states are very difficult to observe and that the effects could be observed for $3d$ states. We also conclude that the deformation effects are sensitive to the parameters of the pion-nucleus optical potential.
A new Skyrme-like energy density suitable for studies of strongly elongated nuclei has been determined in the framework of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory using the recently developed model-based, derivative-free optimization algorithm POUNDerS. A sensitivity analysis at the optimal solution has revealed the importance of states at large deformations in driving the parameterization of the functional. The good agreement with experimental data on masses and separation energies, achieved with the previous parameterization UNEDF0, is largely preserved. In addition, the new energy density UNEDF1…
A microscopic state-of-the-art calculation of the nuclear matrix element for neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{150}$Nd with an account for nuclear deformation is performed. The proton-neutron quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) with a realistic residual interaction [the Brueckner $G$ matrix derived from the charge-depending Bonn (Bonn-CD) nucleon-nucleon potential] is used as the underlying nuclear structure model. The present calculated matrix element is suppressed by about 40% as compared with our previous QRPA result for $^{150}$Nd obtained with neglect of deformation. By mak…
Recently, a variant of the Bohr Hamiltonian was proposed where the mass term is allowed to depend on the beta variable of nuclear deformation. Analytic solutions of this modified Hamiltonian have been obtained using the Davidson and the Kratzer potentials, by employing techniques from supersymmetric quantum mechanics. Apart from the new set of analytic solutions, the newly introduced Deformation-Dependent Mass (DDM) model offered a remedy to the problematic behaviour of the moment of inertia in the Bohr Hamiltonian, where it appears to increase proportionally to the square of beta. In the DDM …
The microscopic energies and nuclear deformations of about 1850 even-even nuclei are calculated systematically within the macroscopic-microscopic framework using three Woods-Saxon parameterizations, with different isospin dependences, which were constructed mainly for nuclear spectroscopy calculations. Calculations are performed in the deformation space $(β_2, γ, β_4)$. Both the monopole and doubly stretched quadrupole interactions are considered for the pairing channel. The ground state deformations obtained by the three calculations are quite similar to each other. Large differences are seen…
Cross-sections for capture reactions of charged particles in hot stellar matter turn out be increased by the quadrupole surface oscillations, if the corresponding phonon energies are of the order of the star temperature. The increase is studied in a model that combines barrier distribution induced by surface oscillations and tunneling. The capture of charged particles by nuclei with well-deformed ground-state is enhanced in stellar matter. It is found that the influence of quadrupole surface deformation on the nuclear reactions in stars grows, when mass and proton numbers in colliding nuclei i…
A double-folding method is used to calculate the nuclear and Coulomb interaction between two deformed nuclei with arbitrary orientations. A simplified Skryme-type interaction is adopted. The contributions of nuclear interaction and Coulomb interaction due to the deformation and orientation of the nuclei are evaluated for the driving potential used in the description of heavy-ion fusion reaction. So far there is no satisfactory theory to describe the evolution of the dynamical nuclear deformation and orientations during the heavy-ion fusion process. Our results estimated the magnitude of above …
Deformation, a key concept in our understanding of heavy nuclei, is based on a mean-field description that breaks the rotational invariance of the nuclear many-body Hamiltonian. We present a method to analyze nuclear deformations at finite temperature in a framework that preserves rotational invariance. The auxiliary-field Monte-Carlo method is used to generate the statistical ensemble and calculate the probability distribution associated with the quadrupole operator. Applying the technique to nuclei in the rare-earth region, we identify model-independent signatures of deformation and find tha…
We perform atomic relativistic many-body calculations of the field isotope shifts and calculations of corresponding nuclear parameters for all stable even-even isotopes of Yb$^+$ ion. We demonstrate that if we take nuclear parameters of the Yb isotopes from a range of the state-the-art nuclear models which all predict strong quadrupole nuclear deformation, then calculated non-linearity of the King plot, caused by the difference in the deformation in different isotopes, is consistent with the non-linearity observed in the experiment (Ian Counts {\em et al}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 125}, 123002 (2…
The nuclear matrix elements of neutrinoless double-$β$ decay for nuclei $^{76}$Ge, $^{82}$Se, $^{100}$Mo, $^{130}$Te, and $^{150}$Nd are studied within the triaxial projected shell model, which incorporates simultaneously the triaxial deformation and quasiparticle configuration mixing. The low-lying spectra and the $B(E2:0^+\rightarrow2^+)$ values are reproduced well. The effects of the quasiparticles configuration mixing, the triaxial deformation, and the closure approximation on the nuclear matrix elements are studied in detail. For nuclei $^{76}$Ge, $^{82}$Se, $^{100}$Mo, $^{130}$Te, and $^…
We study the conditions under which the nucleons inside a deformed nucleus can undergo chaotic motion. To do this we perform self-consistent calculations in semiclassical approximation utilizing a multipole-multipole interaction of the Bohr-Mottelson type for quadrupole and octupole deformations. For the case of harmonic and non-harmonic static potentials, we find that both multipole deformations lead to regular motion of the collective coordinate, the multipole moment of deformation. However, despite this regular collective motion, we observe chaotic single particle dynamics.
Revisiting the nuclear island of negative hexadecapole deformations in A$\approx$180 mass region: focusing on moments of inertia and quadrupole-hexadecapole coupling
We perform a systematic study of the ground-state properties of all the nuclei from the proton drip line to the neutron drip line throughout the periodic table employing the relativistic mean field model. The TMA parameter set is used for the mean-field Lagrangian density, and a state-dependent BCS method is adopted to describe the pairing correlation. The ground-state properties of a total of 6969 nuclei with $Z,N\ge 8$ and $Z\le 100$ from the proton drip line to the neutron drip line, including the binding energies, the separation energies, the deformations, and the rms charge radii, are cal…
The $(β^{-}β^{-})_{0ν}$ decay of $^{94,96}$Zr, $^{98,100}$Mo, $^{104}$Ru, $^{110}$Pd, $^{128,130}$Te and $^{150}$Nd isotopes for the $0^{+}\to 0^{+}$ transition is studied in the Projected Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov framework. In our earlier work, the reliability of HFB intrinsic wave functions participating in the $β^{-}β^{-}$ decay of the above mentioned nuclei has been established by obtaining an overall agreement between the theoretically calculated spectroscopic properties, namely yrast spectra, reduced $B(E2$:$0^{+}\to 2^{+})$ transition probabilities, quadrupole moments $Q(2^{+})$, gyromag…
We use network calculations of r-process nucleosynthesis to explore the origin of the peak in the solar r-process abundance distribution near nuclear mass number A = 160. The peak is due to a subtle interplay of nuclear deformation and beta decay, and forms not in the steady phase of the r-process, but only just prior to freezeout, as the free neutrons rapidly disappear. Its existence should therefore help constrain the conditions under which the r-process occurs and freezes out.
We tabulate the atomic mass excesses and nuclear ground-state deformations of 8979 nuclei ranging from $^{16}$O to $A=339$. The calculations are based on the finite-range droplet macroscopic model and the folded-Yukawa single-particle microscopic model. Relative to our 1981 mass table the current results are obtained with an improved macroscopic model, an improved pairing model with a new form for the effective-interaction pairing gap, and minimization of the ground-state energy with respect to additional shape degrees of freedom. The values of only 9 constants are determined directly from a l…
We show that the Liquid Drop Model is best suited to describe the masses of prolate deformed nuclei than of spherical nuclei. To this end three Liquid Drop Mass formulas are employed to describe nuclear masses of eight sets of nuclei with similar quadrupole deformations. It is shown that they are able to fit the measured masses of prolate deformed nuclei with an RMS smaller than 750 keV, while for the spherical nuclei the RMS is, in the three cases, larger than 2000 keV. The RMS of the best fit of the masses of semi-magic nuclei is also larger than 2000 keV. The parameters of the three models …
The structure of heavy nuclei is difficult to disentangle in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. The deep convolution neural network (DCNN) might be helpful in mapping the complex final states of heavy-ion collisions to the nuclear structure in the initial state. Using DCNN for supervised regression, we successfully extracted the magnitude of the nuclear deformation from event-by-event correlation between the momentum anisotropy or elliptic flow ($v_2$) and total number of charged hadrons ($dN_{\rm ch}/dη$) within a Monte Carlo model. Furthermore, a degeneracy is found in the correlation between…
