We perform atomic relativistic many-body calculations of the field isotope shifts and calculations of corresponding nuclear parameters for all stable even-even isotopes of Yb$^+$ ion. We demonstrate that if we take nuclear parameters of the Yb isotopes from a range of the state-the-art nuclear models which all predict strong quadrupole nuclear deformation, then calculated non-linearity of the King plot, caused by the difference in the deformation in different isotopes, is consistent with the non-linearity observed in the experiment (Ian Counts {\em et al}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 125}, 123002 (2020)). The changes of nuclear RMS radius between isotopes extracted from experiment are consistent with those obtained in the nuclear calculations.
The effect of nuclear polarisation on the non-linearities of King plot for isotope shift in Ca$^+$, Sr$^+$ and Yb$^+$ ions is studied. These ions are currently used in search for the manifestation of new interaction via non-linearities of King plot. The role of relativistic effects is also studied. The best way to achieve separation of electronic and nuclear variables (which is necessary for the linearity) is to present the field shift as $F"δ\langle r^λ \rangle$, where the value of $λ$ is the result of numerical relativistic calculations ($2γ< λ<2$, $γ= \sqrt{1-(Z/137.036)^2}$). Using this an…
We derive a mean-field relativistic formula for the isotope shift of an electronic energy level for arbitrary angular momentum; we then use it to predict the spectra of superheavy metastable neutron-rich isotopes belonging to the hypothetical island of stability. Our results may be applied to the search for superheavy atoms in astrophysical spectra using the known values of the transition frequencies for the neutron deficient isotopes produced in the laboratory. An example of a relevant astrophysical system may be the spectra of the Przybylski's star where superheavy elements up to Z=99 have b…
Investigations of isotope shifts of atomic spectral lines provide insights into nuclear properties. Deviations from the linear dependence of the isotope shifts of two atomic transitions on nuclear parameters, leading to a nonlinearity of the so-called King plot, are actively studied as a possible way of searching for the new physics. In the present work we calculate the King-plot nonlinearities originating from the Standard-Model atomic theory. The calculation is performed both analytically, for a model example applicable for an arbitrary atom, and numerically, for one-electron ions. It is dem…
Atomic spectral lines for different isotopes are shifted, revealing a change in the properties of the nucleus. For spinless nuclei such isotope shifts for two distinct transitions are expected to be linearly related, at least at leading order in a change of the nuclear mass and charge distribution. Looking for a breaking of linearity in so-called King plots was proposed as a novel method to search for physics beyond the standard model. In the light of the recent experimental progress in isotope shift spectroscopy, the sensitivity of these searches will become limited by the determination of th…

We demonstrate that the isotope shift in isotopomers of diatomic molecules, where the nucleus of one of its constituent atoms is replaced by another isotope, can be expressed as the sum of a field shift and a mass shift, similar to the atomic case. We show that a linear relation holds between atomic and molecular isotopes shifts, thus extending the King-plot analysis to molecular isotope shifts. Optical isotope shifts in YbF and ZrO and infrared isotope shifts in SnH are analyzed with a molecular King-plot approach, utilizing Yb$^{+}$ and Zr$^{+}$ ionic isotope shifts and charge radii of Sn ob…
Optical precision spectroscopy of isotope shifts can be used to test for new forces beyond the Standard Model, and to determine basic properties of atomic nuclei. We measure isotope shifts on the highly forbidden ${}^2S_{1/2} \rightarrow {}^2F_{7/2}$ octupole transition of trapped $^{168,170,172,174,176}$Yb ions. When combined with previous measurements in Yb$^+$ and very recent measurements in Yb, the data reveal a King plot nonlinearity of up to 240$σ$. The trends exhibited by experimental data are explained by nuclear density functional theory calculations with the Fayans functional. We als…
High-accuracy determination of isotope shift factors, which plays a crucial role in accurate extraction of nuclear charge radius, is well-known to be challenging experimentally and theoretically. Nonetheless, based on an accurate measurement of the isotope shifts for the Cd$^+$ $5s~^2S_{1/2}-5p~^2P_{3/2}$ and the Cd $5s^2~^1S_0-5s5p~^1P_1$ transition, a multidimensional King-plot analysis is performed to extract the atomic field shift and mass shift factors accurately. The results are further cross-checked against results from atomic structure calculations using a high-accuracy configuration i…
We measure isotope shifts for neutral Yb isotopes on an ultranarrow optical clock transition $^{1}\text{S}_{0}-^{3}\text{P}_{0}$ with an accuracy of a few Hz. The part-per-billion precise measurement was possible by loading the ultracold atoms into a three-dimensional magic-wavelength optical lattice and alternately interrogating the isotope pairs, thus minimizing the effects due to the optical lattice light-shift and inter-atomic interaction as well as the drifts of a clock laser frequency and a magnetic field. The determined isotope shifts, combined with one of the recently reported isotope-…
When collecting spectroscopic data on at least four isotopes, nonlinearities in the King plot are a possible sign of Physics beyond the Standard Model. In this work, an improved approach to the search for hypothetical new interactions with isotope shift spectroscopy of few-electron ions is presented. Very careful account is taken of the small nuclear corrections to the energy levels and the gyromagnetic factors, which cause deviations from King linearity within the Standard Model and are hence a possible source of confounds. In this new approach, the experimental King nonlinearity is not compa…
We report measurements of isotope shifts for the five spinless Yb isotopes on the $6s^2\,^1\textrm{S}_0 \rightarrow 5d6s\,^1\textrm{D}_2$ transition using Doppler-free two-photon spectroscopy. We combine these data with existing measurements on two transitions in Yb$^+$ [Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 123002 (2020)], where deviation from King-plot linearity showed hints of a new bosonic force carrier at the 3$σ$ level. The combined data strongly reduces the significance of the new-physics signal. We show that the observed nonlinearity in the joint Yb/Yb$^+$ King-plot analysis can be accounted for by th…
Isotope shifts of transition frequencies in atoms constrain generic long- and intermediate-range interactions. We focus on new physics scenarios that can be most strongly constrained by King Linearity Violation such as models with B-L vector bosons, Higgs portal and chameleon. With the anticipated precision, King Linearity Violation has the potential to set the strongest laboratory bounds on these models in some regions of parameter space. Furthermore, we show that this method can probe the couplings relevant for the protophobic interpretation of the recently reported Be anomaly. We extend the…
Violation of linearity of the King plot is investigated for a chain of partially stripped argon isotopes. The nonlinearity originates within the Standard Model from subtle contributions to the isotope shifts from next-to-leading order effects, which have never been systematically studied so far. In light atoms these nonlinear effects are dominated by the quadratic nuclear recoil ($\propto 1/M^2$ where $M$ is the nuclear mass). Large-scale relativistic calculations of the linear and quadratic mass shift and the field shift are performed for the $2P$ fine-structure transitions in Be-like, B-like…

Isotope shift spectroscopy with narrow optical transitions provides a benchmark for atomic structure calculations and has also been proposed as a way to constrain theories predicting physics beyond the Standard Model. Here, we have measured frequency shifts of the ${^1}S_0 \rightarrow {^3}P_1$ and ${^1}S_0 \rightarrow {^3}P_0$ transitions between all stable isotopes of strontium relative to ${^{88}}$Sr. This includes the first reported measurements of the ${^1}S_0 \rightarrow {^3}P_0$ isotope shift of ${^{88}}$Sr-${^{86}}$Sr and ${^{88}}$Sr-${^{84}}$Sr. Using the isotope shift measurements of …
We measure isotope shifts for five Yb$^+$ isotopes with zero nuclear spin on two narrow optical quadrupole transitions ${}^2S_{1/2} \rightarrow {}^2D_{3/2}$, ${}^2S_{1/2} \rightarrow {}^2D_{5/2}$ with an accuracy of $\sim 300$ Hz. The corresponding King plot shows a $3 \times 10^{-7}$ deviation from linearity at the 3 $σ$ uncertainty level. Such a nonlinearity can indicate physics beyond the Standard Model (SM) in the form of a new bosonic force carrier, or arise from higher-order nuclear effects within the SM. We identify the quadratic field shift as a possible contributor to the nonlinearity…
Relativistic multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock (MCDHF) calculations with configuration interaction (CI) are carried out for the $^{1}S_{0}$ and $^{3}P_{0,1}^o$ states in neutral ytterbium by use of the available GRASP2018 package. From the resultant atomic state functions and the RIS4 extension, we evaluate the mass and field shift parameters for the $^{1}S_{0}-\,^{3}P_{0}^o$ (clock) and $^{1}S_{0}-\,^{3}P_{1}^o$ (intercombination) lines. We present improved estimates of the nuclear charge parameters, $λ^{A,A'}$, and differences in mean-square charge radii, $δ\langle r^2\rangle^{A,A'}$, an…

Isotope shifts (ISs) in atomic energy levels are sensitive probes of nuclear structure and new physics beyond the Standard Model. We present an analysis of the ISs of the cadmium atom (Cd I) and singly charged cadmium ion (Cd II). ISs of the 229 nm, 326 nm, 361 nm and 480 nm lines of Cd I are measured with a variety of techniques; buffer-gas-cooled beam spectroscopy, capturing atoms in a magneto-optic-trap, and optical pumping. IS constants for the D1 and D2 lines of Cd II are calculated with high accuracy by employing analytical response relativistic coupled-cluster theory in the singles, dou…
