High-accuracy determination of isotope shift factors, which plays a crucial role in accurate extraction of nuclear charge radius, is well-known to be challenging experimentally and theoretically. Nonetheless, based on an accurate measurement of the isotope shifts for the Cd$^+$ $5s~^2S_{1/2}-5p~^2P_{3/2}$ and the Cd $5s^2~^1S_0-5s5p~^1P_1$ transition, a multidimensional King-plot analysis is performed to extract the atomic field shift and mass shift factors accurately. The results are further cross-checked against results from atomic structure calculations using a high-accuracy configuration interaction and many-body perturbation theory. Combined with previous isotope shifts, nuclear charge radii for $^{100-130}$Cd of the highest accuracy are reported. For the neutron-rich region, accuracies for the charge radii are improved by nearly one order of magnitude. This work provides a coherent and systematic extraction of Cd nuclear charge radii from isotope shifts. The results offer stringent testing and possible challenges to the latest advances in nuclear theory and excellent benchmarking to the atomic structure calculations.
The effect of nuclear polarisation on the non-linearities of King plot for isotope shift in Ca$^+$, Sr$^+$ and Yb$^+$ ions is studied. These ions are currently used in search for the manifestation of new interaction via non-linearities of King plot. The role of relativistic effects is also studied. The best way to achieve separation of electronic and nuclear variables (which is necessary for the linearity) is to present the field shift as $F"δ\langle r^λ \rangle$, where the value of $λ$ is the result of numerical relativistic calculations ($2γ< λ<2$, $γ= \sqrt{1-(Z/137.036)^2}$). Using this an…
Investigations of isotope shifts of atomic spectral lines provide insights into nuclear properties. Deviations from the linear dependence of the isotope shifts of two atomic transitions on nuclear parameters, leading to a nonlinearity of the so-called King plot, are actively studied as a possible way of searching for the new physics. In the present work we calculate the King-plot nonlinearities originating from the Standard-Model atomic theory. The calculation is performed both analytically, for a model example applicable for an arbitrary atom, and numerically, for one-electron ions. It is dem…
We perform atomic relativistic many-body calculations of the field isotope shifts and calculations of corresponding nuclear parameters for all stable even-even isotopes of Yb$^+$ ion. We demonstrate that if we take nuclear parameters of the Yb isotopes from a range of the state-the-art nuclear models which all predict strong quadrupole nuclear deformation, then calculated non-linearity of the King plot, caused by the difference in the deformation in different isotopes, is consistent with the non-linearity observed in the experiment (Ian Counts {\em et al}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 125}, 123002 (2…
We derive a mean-field relativistic formula for the isotope shift of an electronic energy level for arbitrary angular momentum; we then use it to predict the spectra of superheavy metastable neutron-rich isotopes belonging to the hypothetical island of stability. Our results may be applied to the search for superheavy atoms in astrophysical spectra using the known values of the transition frequencies for the neutron deficient isotopes produced in the laboratory. An example of a relevant astrophysical system may be the spectra of the Przybylski's star where superheavy elements up to Z=99 have b…

We demonstrate that the isotope shift in isotopomers of diatomic molecules, where the nucleus of one of its constituent atoms is replaced by another isotope, can be expressed as the sum of a field shift and a mass shift, similar to the atomic case. We show that a linear relation holds between atomic and molecular isotopes shifts, thus extending the King-plot analysis to molecular isotope shifts. Optical isotope shifts in YbF and ZrO and infrared isotope shifts in SnH are analyzed with a molecular King-plot approach, utilizing Yb$^{+}$ and Zr$^{+}$ ionic isotope shifts and charge radii of Sn ob…
Optical precision spectroscopy of isotope shifts can be used to test for new forces beyond the Standard Model, and to determine basic properties of atomic nuclei. We measure isotope shifts on the highly forbidden ${}^2S_{1/2} \rightarrow {}^2F_{7/2}$ octupole transition of trapped $^{168,170,172,174,176}$Yb ions. When combined with previous measurements in Yb$^+$ and very recent measurements in Yb, the data reveal a King plot nonlinearity of up to 240$σ$. The trends exhibited by experimental data are explained by nuclear density functional theory calculations with the Fayans functional. We als…
We measure isotope shifts for neutral Yb isotopes on an ultranarrow optical clock transition $^{1}\text{S}_{0}-^{3}\text{P}_{0}$ with an accuracy of a few Hz. The part-per-billion precise measurement was possible by loading the ultracold atoms into a three-dimensional magic-wavelength optical lattice and alternately interrogating the isotope pairs, thus minimizing the effects due to the optical lattice light-shift and inter-atomic interaction as well as the drifts of a clock laser frequency and a magnetic field. The determined isotope shifts, combined with one of the recently reported isotope-…
Atomic spectral lines for different isotopes are shifted, revealing a change in the properties of the nucleus. For spinless nuclei such isotope shifts for two distinct transitions are expected to be linearly related, at least at leading order in a change of the nuclear mass and charge distribution. Looking for a breaking of linearity in so-called King plots was proposed as a novel method to search for physics beyond the standard model. In the light of the recent experimental progress in isotope shift spectroscopy, the sensitivity of these searches will become limited by the determination of th…
We report measurements of isotope shifts for the five spinless Yb isotopes on the $6s^2\,^1\textrm{S}_0 \rightarrow 5d6s\,^1\textrm{D}_2$ transition using Doppler-free two-photon spectroscopy. We combine these data with existing measurements on two transitions in Yb$^+$ [Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 123002 (2020)], where deviation from King-plot linearity showed hints of a new bosonic force carrier at the 3$σ$ level. The combined data strongly reduces the significance of the new-physics signal. We show that the observed nonlinearity in the joint Yb/Yb$^+$ King-plot analysis can be accounted for by th…
Violation of linearity of the King plot is investigated for a chain of partially stripped argon isotopes. The nonlinearity originates within the Standard Model from subtle contributions to the isotope shifts from next-to-leading order effects, which have never been systematically studied so far. In light atoms these nonlinear effects are dominated by the quadratic nuclear recoil ($\propto 1/M^2$ where $M$ is the nuclear mass). Large-scale relativistic calculations of the linear and quadratic mass shift and the field shift are performed for the $2P$ fine-structure transitions in Be-like, B-like…
Promising searches for new physics beyond the current Standard Model (SM) of particle physics are feasible through isotope-shift spectroscopy, which is sensitive to a hypothetical fifth force between the neutrons of the nucleus and the electrons of the shell. Such an interaction would be mediated by a new particle which could in principle be associated with dark matter. In so-called King plots, the mass-scaled frequency shifts of two optical transitions are plotted against each other for a series of isotopes. Subtle deviations from the expected linearity could reveal such a fifth force. Here, …
When collecting spectroscopic data on at least four isotopes, nonlinearities in the King plot are a possible sign of Physics beyond the Standard Model. In this work, an improved approach to the search for hypothetical new interactions with isotope shift spectroscopy of few-electron ions is presented. Very careful account is taken of the small nuclear corrections to the energy levels and the gyromagnetic factors, which cause deviations from King linearity within the Standard Model and are hence a possible source of confounds. In this new approach, the experimental King nonlinearity is not compa…
We observe the electric-dipole forbidden $7s\rightarrow8s$ transition in the francium isotopes $^{208-211}$Fr and $^{213}$Fr using a two-photon excitation scheme. We collect the atoms online from an accelerator and confine them in a magneto optical trap for the measurements. In combination with previous measurements of the $7s\rightarrow7p_{1/2}$ transition we perform a King Plot analysis. We compare the thus determined ratio of the field shift constants (1.230 $\pm$ 0.019) to results obtained from new ab initio calculations (1.234 $\pm$ 0.010) and find excellent agreement.

Isotope shift spectroscopy with narrow optical transitions provides a benchmark for atomic structure calculations and has also been proposed as a way to constrain theories predicting physics beyond the Standard Model. Here, we have measured frequency shifts of the ${^1}S_0 \rightarrow {^3}P_1$ and ${^1}S_0 \rightarrow {^3}P_0$ transitions between all stable isotopes of strontium relative to ${^{88}}$Sr. This includes the first reported measurements of the ${^1}S_0 \rightarrow {^3}P_0$ isotope shift of ${^{88}}$Sr-${^{86}}$Sr and ${^{88}}$Sr-${^{84}}$Sr. Using the isotope shift measurements of …
We report on improved isotope shift measurements of the isotopes $^{40,42,44,48}$Ca in the $4s\,^2 \rm{S}_{\frac{1}{2}} \rightarrow 4p\,^2\rm{P}_{\frac{3}{2}}$ (D2) transition using collinear laser spectroscopy. Accurately known isotope shifts in the $4s\,^2 \rm{S}_{\frac{1}{2}} \rightarrow 4p\,^2\rm{P}_{\frac{1}{2}}$ (D1) transition were used to calibrate the ion beam energy with an uncertainty of $ΔU \approx \pm 0.25$ V. The accuracy in the D2 transition was improved by a factor of $5 - 10$. A King-plot analysis of the two transitions revealed that the field shift factor in the D2 line is ab…
We present absolute frequency measurements of the ${}^{1}\text{P}_1 \leftarrow {}^{1}\text{S}_0$ ($229$nm) and ${}^{3}\text{P}_1 \leftarrow {}^{1}\text{S}_0$ ($326$nm) transitions for all naturally occurring isotopes of cadmium. The isotope shifts and hyperfine intervals of the fermionic isotopes are determined with an accuracy of 3.3MHz. We find that quantum interference in the laser-induced fluorescence spectra of the ${}^{1}\text{P}_1 \leftarrow {}^{1}\text{S}_0$ transition causes an error of up to 29(5)MHz in determining the hyperfine splitting, when not accounted for with an appropriate m…
We report measurements of the isotope shifts of two transitions ($4f^46s\rightarrow [25044.7]^{\circ}_{7/2}$ and $4f^46s\rightarrow [25138.6]^{\circ}_{7/2}$) in neodymium ions (Nd$^+$) with hundredfold improved accuracy, using laser spectroscopy of a cryogenically-cooled neutral plasma. The isotope shifts were measured across a set of five spin-zero isotopes that spans a nuclear shape transition. We discuss the prospects for further improvements to the accuracy of Nd$^+$ isotope shifts using optical clock transitions, which could enable higher precision tests of King plot linearity for new phy…
Relativistic multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock (MCDHF) calculations with configuration interaction (CI) are carried out for the $^{1}S_{0}$ and $^{3}P_{0,1}^o$ states in neutral ytterbium by use of the available GRASP2018 package. From the resultant atomic state functions and the RIS4 extension, we evaluate the mass and field shift parameters for the $^{1}S_{0}-\,^{3}P_{0}^o$ (clock) and $^{1}S_{0}-\,^{3}P_{1}^o$ (intercombination) lines. We present improved estimates of the nuclear charge parameters, $λ^{A,A'}$, and differences in mean-square charge radii, $δ\langle r^2\rangle^{A,A'}$, an…

We measure isotope shifts for five Yb$^+$ isotopes with zero nuclear spin on two narrow optical quadrupole transitions ${}^2S_{1/2} \rightarrow {}^2D_{3/2}$, ${}^2S_{1/2} \rightarrow {}^2D_{5/2}$ with an accuracy of $\sim 300$ Hz. The corresponding King plot shows a $3 \times 10^{-7}$ deviation from linearity at the 3 $σ$ uncertainty level. Such a nonlinearity can indicate physics beyond the Standard Model (SM) in the form of a new bosonic force carrier, or arise from higher-order nuclear effects within the SM. We identify the quadratic field shift as a possible contributor to the nonlinearity…
We demonstrate that several metastable excited states in Hf$~$II, Hf$~$IV and W$~$VI ions may be good clock states since they are sufficiently long-living and are not sensitive to the perturbations. Cooling E1 transitions are available. Energy levels, Landé $g$-factors, transition amplitudes for electric dipole (E1), electric quadrupole (E2), and magnetic dipole (M1) transitions, lifetimes, and electric quadrupole moments for Hf$~$II, Hf$~$IV, and W$~$VI ions are investigated using a combination of several methods of relativistic many-body calculations including the configuration interaction (…
By use of the \textsc{grasp2018} package we perform Multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock (MCDHF) calculations with configuration interaction (CI) for the $^{1}S_{0}$ and $^{3}P_{0,1}^o$ levels in neutral cadmium and mercury. By supplying the resultant atomic state functions to the \textsc{ris4} program, we evaluate the mass and field shift parameters for the $^{1}S_{0}-\,^{3}P_{0}^o$ (clock) and $^{1}S_{0}-\,^{3}P_{1}^o$ (intercombination) lines. We make revised estimates of the nuclear charge parameters $λ^{A,A'}$ and differences in mean-square charge radii $δ\langle r^2\rangle^{A,A'}$ for b…
Isotope shifts (ISs) in atomic energy levels are sensitive probes of nuclear structure and new physics beyond the Standard Model. We present an analysis of the ISs of the cadmium atom (Cd I) and singly charged cadmium ion (Cd II). ISs of the 229 nm, 326 nm, 361 nm and 480 nm lines of Cd I are measured with a variety of techniques; buffer-gas-cooled beam spectroscopy, capturing atoms in a magneto-optic-trap, and optical pumping. IS constants for the D1 and D2 lines of Cd II are calculated with high accuracy by employing analytical response relativistic coupled-cluster theory in the singles, dou…
We perform high-resolution spectroscopy of the $3$d$~^2$D$_{3/2} - 3$d$~^2$D$_{5/2}$ interval in all stable even isotopes of $^A$Ca$^+$ (A = 40, 42, 44, 46 and 48) with an accuracy of $\sim$ 20 Hz using direct frequency-comb Raman spectroscopy. Combining these data with isotope shift measurements of the 4s$~^2$S$_{1/2} \leftrightarrow 3$d$~^2$D$_{5/2}$ transition, we carry out a King plot analysis with unprecedented sensitivity to coupling between electrons and neutrons by bosons beyond the Standard Model. Furthermore, we estimate the sensitivity to such bosons from equivalent spectroscopy in …
In heavy atoms and ions, nuclear structure effects are significantly enhanced due to the overlap of the electron wave functions with the nucleus. This overlap rapidly increases with the nuclear charge $Z$. We study the energy level shifts induced by the electric dipole and electric quadrupole nuclear polarization effects in atoms and ions with $Z \geq 20$. The electric dipole polarization effect is enhanced by the nuclear giant dipole resonance. The electric quadrupole polarization effect is enhanced because the electrons in a heavy atom or ion move faster than the rotation of the deformed nuc…
We propose a novel approach to probe new fundamental interactions using isotope shift spectroscopy in atomic clock transitions. As concrete toy example we focus on the Higgs boson couplings to the building blocks of matter: the electron and the up and down quarks. We show that the attractive Higgs force between nuclei and their bound electrons, that is poorly constrained, might induce effects that are larger than the current experimental sensitivities. More generically, we discuss how new interactions between the electron and the neutrons, mediated via light new degrees of freedom, may lead to…
Electronic factors for the field and mass isotope shifts in the $6p\ ^{2}P_{3/2} \to 7s\ ^{2}S_{1/2}$ (535 nm), $6p\ ^{2}P_{1/2} \to 6d\ ^{2}D_{3/2}$ (277 nm) and $6p\ ^{2}P_{1/2} \to 7s\ ^{2}S_{1/2}$ (378~nm) transitions in the neutral thallium were calculated within the high-order relativistic coupled cluster approach. These factors were used to reinterpret previous experimental isotope shift measurements in terms of charge radii of a wide range of Tl isotopes. Good agreement between theoretical and experimental King-plot parameters was found for the $6p\ ^{2}P_{3/2} \to 7s\ ^{2}S_{1/2}$ and…
