We perform high-resolution spectroscopy of the $3$d$~^2$D$_{3/2} - 3$d$~^2$D$_{5/2}$ interval in all stable even isotopes of $^A$Ca$^+$ (A = 40, 42, 44, 46 and 48) with an accuracy of $\sim$ 20 Hz using direct frequency-comb Raman spectroscopy. Combining these data with isotope shift measurements of the 4s$~^2$S$_{1/2} \leftrightarrow 3$d$~^2$D$_{5/2}$ transition, we carry out a King plot analysis with unprecedented sensitivity to coupling between electrons and neutrons by bosons beyond the Standard Model. Furthermore, we estimate the sensitivity to such bosons from equivalent spectroscopy in Ba$^+$ and Yb$^+$. Finally, the data yield isotope shifts of the 4s$~^2$S$_{1/2} \leftrightarrow 3$d$~^2$D$_{3/2}$ transition at 10 part-per-billion through combination with recent data of Knollmann et al (2019).
We measure isotope shifts for five Yb$^+$ isotopes with zero nuclear spin on two narrow optical quadrupole transitions ${}^2S_{1/2} \rightarrow {}^2D_{3/2}$, ${}^2S_{1/2} \rightarrow {}^2D_{5/2}$ with an accuracy of $\sim 300$ Hz. The corresponding King plot shows a $3 \times 10^{-7}$ deviation from linearity at the 3 $σ$ uncertainty level. Such a nonlinearity can indicate physics beyond the Standard Model (SM) in the form of a new bosonic force carrier, or arise from higher-order nuclear effects within the SM. We identify the quadratic field shift as a possible contributor to the nonlinearity…
We have magneto-optically trapped all three stable neon isotopes, including the rare Ne-21, and all two-isotope combinations. The atoms are prepared in the metastable ^3P_2 state and manipulated via laser interaction on the ^3P_2 to ^3D_3} transition at 640.2nm. These cold (T = 1mK) and environmentally decoupled atom samples present ideal objects for precision measurements and the investigation of interactions between cold and ultracold metastable atoms. In this work, we present accurate measurements of the isotope shift of the ^3P_2 to ^3D_3 transition and the hyperfine interaction constants …
We measure isotope shifts for neutral Yb isotopes on an ultranarrow optical clock transition $^{1}\text{S}_{0}-^{3}\text{P}_{0}$ with an accuracy of a few Hz. The part-per-billion precise measurement was possible by loading the ultracold atoms into a three-dimensional magic-wavelength optical lattice and alternately interrogating the isotope pairs, thus minimizing the effects due to the optical lattice light-shift and inter-atomic interaction as well as the drifts of a clock laser frequency and a magnetic field. The determined isotope shifts, combined with one of the recently reported isotope-…
Isotope shifts of transition frequencies in atoms constrain generic long- and intermediate-range interactions. We focus on new physics scenarios that can be most strongly constrained by King Linearity Violation such as models with B-L vector bosons, Higgs portal and chameleon. With the anticipated precision, King Linearity Violation has the potential to set the strongest laboratory bounds on these models in some regions of parameter space. Furthermore, we show that this method can probe the couplings relevant for the protophobic interpretation of the recently reported Be anomaly. We extend the…
We derive a mean-field relativistic formula for the isotope shift of an electronic energy level for arbitrary angular momentum; we then use it to predict the spectra of superheavy metastable neutron-rich isotopes belonging to the hypothetical island of stability. Our results may be applied to the search for superheavy atoms in astrophysical spectra using the known values of the transition frequencies for the neutron deficient isotopes produced in the laboratory. An example of a relevant astrophysical system may be the spectra of the Przybylski's star where superheavy elements up to Z=99 have b…
We report measurements of isotope shifts for the five spinless Yb isotopes on the $6s^2\,^1\textrm{S}_0 \rightarrow 5d6s\,^1\textrm{D}_2$ transition using Doppler-free two-photon spectroscopy. We combine these data with existing measurements on two transitions in Yb$^+$ [Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 123002 (2020)], where deviation from King-plot linearity showed hints of a new bosonic force carrier at the 3$σ$ level. The combined data strongly reduces the significance of the new-physics signal. We show that the observed nonlinearity in the joint Yb/Yb$^+$ King-plot analysis can be accounted for by th…
We report the measurement of the triplet s-partial-wave scattering length $a$ of two bosonic isotopes of the highly magnetic element, dysprosium: $a=122(10)a_0$ for $^{162}$Dy and $a=92(8)a_0$ for $^{164}$Dy, where $a_0$ is the Bohr radius. The scattering lengths are determined by the cross-dimensional relaxation of ultracold gases of these Dy isotopes at temperatures above quantum degeneracy. In this temperature regime, the measured rethermalization dynamics can be compared to simulations of the Boltzmann equation using a direct-simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method employing the anisotropic d…
Optical precision spectroscopy of isotope shifts can be used to test for new forces beyond the Standard Model, and to determine basic properties of atomic nuclei. We measure isotope shifts on the highly forbidden ${}^2S_{1/2} \rightarrow {}^2F_{7/2}$ octupole transition of trapped $^{168,170,172,174,176}$Yb ions. When combined with previous measurements in Yb$^+$ and very recent measurements in Yb, the data reveal a King plot nonlinearity of up to 240$σ$. The trends exhibited by experimental data are explained by nuclear density functional theory calculations with the Fayans functional. We als…
A constraint on a long-range spin-dependent interaction $α^{\prime\prime}({\bf s}_1\cdot{\bf s}_2)\,{\rm e}^{-λr}/r$, which can be induced by a pseudovector light boson, is presented. We study theoretical and experimental data on a specific difference $8\times E_{\rm hfs}(2s)-E_{\rm hfs}(1s)$ for light two-body atoms. The spin-dependent coupling constant $α^{\prime\prime}$ of electron-nucleus interaction in hydrogen, deuterium and helium-3 ion is constrained at the level below a part in $10^{16}$. The derived constraints are related to the range of masses below $4\;{\rm keV}/c^2$.
We present absolute frequency measurements of the ${}^{1}\text{P}_1 \leftarrow {}^{1}\text{S}_0$ ($229$nm) and ${}^{3}\text{P}_1 \leftarrow {}^{1}\text{S}_0$ ($326$nm) transitions for all naturally occurring isotopes of cadmium. The isotope shifts and hyperfine intervals of the fermionic isotopes are determined with an accuracy of 3.3MHz. We find that quantum interference in the laser-induced fluorescence spectra of the ${}^{1}\text{P}_1 \leftarrow {}^{1}\text{S}_0$ transition causes an error of up to 29(5)MHz in determining the hyperfine splitting, when not accounted for with an appropriate m…
We introduce a new linear relation in the isotope shifts of atomic spectroscopy. While the famous King relation is the linear relation among the different transitions, the new one is the linear relation among the different isotope pairs. Since we obtain this relation by exchanging the roles of the electronic and the nuclear factors in the original relation, we call it the dual King relation. This relation shows us similar information to the original King relation without including new fit parameters when we measure the isotope shifts of many transitions. In the dual King relation, the fit coef…
Relativistic multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock (MCDHF) calculations with configuration interaction (CI) are carried out for the $^{1}S_{0}$ and $^{3}P_{0,1}^o$ states in neutral ytterbium by use of the available GRASP2018 package. From the resultant atomic state functions and the RIS4 extension, we evaluate the mass and field shift parameters for the $^{1}S_{0}-\,^{3}P_{0}^o$ (clock) and $^{1}S_{0}-\,^{3}P_{1}^o$ (intercombination) lines. We present improved estimates of the nuclear charge parameters, $λ^{A,A'}$, and differences in mean-square charge radii, $δ\langle r^2\rangle^{A,A'}$, an…
We report the first measurement of a tune-out wavelength for ground-state bosonic Dy and linearly polarized light. The tune-out wavelength measured is near the narrow-line 741-nm transition in $^{162}$Dy, and is the wavelength at which the total Stark shift of the ground state vanishes. We find that it strongly depends on the relative angle between the optical field and quantization axis due to Dy's large tensor polarizability. This anisotropy provides a wide, 22-GHz tunability of the tune-out frequency for linearly polarized light, in contrast to Rb and Cs whose near-infrared tune-out wavelen…
We propose a novel approach to probe new fundamental interactions using isotope shift spectroscopy in atomic clock transitions. As concrete toy example we focus on the Higgs boson couplings to the building blocks of matter: the electron and the up and down quarks. We show that the attractive Higgs force between nuclei and their bound electrons, that is poorly constrained, might induce effects that are larger than the current experimental sensitivities. More generically, we discuss how new interactions between the electron and the neutrons, mediated via light new degrees of freedom, may lead to…
We report on spectroscopy of cold dysprosium atoms on the $1001\,\mathrm{nm}$ transition and present measurements of the excited state lifetime which is at least $87.2(6.7)\,\mathrm{ms}$ long. Due to the long excited state lifetime we are able to measure the ratio of the excited state polarizability to the ground state polarizability at $1064\,\mathrm{nm}$ to be $0.828(0.129)$ by parametric heating in an optical dipole trap. In addition we measure the isotope shifts of the three most abundant bosonic isotopes of dysprosium on the $1001\,\mathrm{nm}$ transition with an accuracy better than $30\…
Isotope shifts (ISs) in atomic energy levels are sensitive probes of nuclear structure and new physics beyond the Standard Model. We present an analysis of the ISs of the cadmium atom (Cd I) and singly charged cadmium ion (Cd II). ISs of the 229 nm, 326 nm, 361 nm and 480 nm lines of Cd I are measured with a variety of techniques; buffer-gas-cooled beam spectroscopy, capturing atoms in a magneto-optic-trap, and optical pumping. IS constants for the D1 and D2 lines of Cd II are calculated with high accuracy by employing analytical response relativistic coupled-cluster theory in the singles, dou…
A sharp resonance line that appears in three-photon transitions between the $^{1}S_{0}$ and $^{3}P_{0}$ states of alkaline earth and Yb atoms is proposed as an optical frequency standard. This proposal permits the use of the even isotopes, in which the clock transition is narrower than in proposed clocks using the odd isotopes and the energy interval is not affected by external magnetic fields or the polarization of trapping light. The method has the unique feature that the width and rate of the clock transition can be continuously adjusted from the $MHz$ level to sub-$mHz$ without loss of sig…
We report an uncertainty evaluation of an optical lattice clock based on the $^1S_0\leftrightarrow^3P_0$ transition in the bosonic isotope $^{174}$Yb by use of magnetically induced spectroscopy. The absolute frequency of the $^1S_0\leftrightarrow^3P_0$ transition has been determined through comparisons with optical and microwave standards at NIST. The weighted mean of the evaluations is $ν$($^{174}$Yb)=518 294 025 309 217.8(0.9) Hz. The uncertainty due to systematic effects has been reduced to less than 0.8 Hz, which represents $1.5\times10^{-15}$ in fractional frequency.
By use of the \textsc{grasp2018} package we perform Multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock (MCDHF) calculations with configuration interaction (CI) for the $^{1}S_{0}$ and $^{3}P_{0,1}^o$ levels in neutral cadmium and mercury. By supplying the resultant atomic state functions to the \textsc{ris4} program, we evaluate the mass and field shift parameters for the $^{1}S_{0}-\,^{3}P_{0}^o$ (clock) and $^{1}S_{0}-\,^{3}P_{1}^o$ (intercombination) lines. We make revised estimates of the nuclear charge parameters $λ^{A,A'}$ and differences in mean-square charge radii $δ\langle r^2\rangle^{A,A'}$ for b…
