We report the first measurement of a tune-out wavelength for ground-state bosonic Dy and linearly polarized light. The tune-out wavelength measured is near the narrow-line 741-nm transition in $^{162}$Dy, and is the wavelength at which the total Stark shift of the ground state vanishes. We find that it strongly depends on the relative angle between the optical field and quantization axis due to Dy's large tensor polarizability. This anisotropy provides a wide, 22-GHz tunability of the tune-out frequency for linearly polarized light, in contrast to Rb and Cs whose near-infrared tune-out wavelengths do not exhibit large anisotropy. The measurements of the total light shift are performed by measuring the contrast of multipulse Kapitza-Dirac diffraction. The calculated wavelengths are within a few GHz of the measured values using known Dy electronic transition data. The lack of hyperfine structure in bosonic Dy implies that the tune-out wavelengths for the other bosonic Dy isotopes should be related to this $^{162}$Dy measurement by the known isotope shifts.
We report on a precision measurement of the $D$ line tune-out wavelength of $^{87}$Rubidium in the hyperfine ground state $|F=1, m_F=0,\pm1 \rangle$ manifold at 790 nm, where the scalar ac Stark shifts of the $D_1$ and the $D_2$ lines cancel. This wavelength is sensitive to usually neglected contributions from vector and tensor ac Stark shifts, transitions to higher principle quantum numbers, and core electrons. The ac Stark shift is probed by Kapitza-Dirac scattering of a Rubidium Bose-Einstein condensate in a one-dimensional optical lattice in free space and controlled magnetic environment. …

The lowest 3 tune-out wavelengths of the four alkaline-earth atoms, Be, Mg, Ca and Sr are determined from tabulations of matrix elements produced from large first principles calculations. The tune-out wavelengths are located near the wavelengths for $^3P^o_1$ and $^1P^o_1$ excitations. The measurement of the tune-out wavelengths could be used to establish a quantitative relationship between the oscillator strength of the transition leading to existence of the tune-out wavelength and the dynamic polarizability of the atom at the tune-out frequency. The longest tune-out wavelengths for Be, Mg, C…
We report an experimental measurement of a light wavelength at which the ac electric polarizability equals zero for 87Rb atoms in the F=2 ground hyperfine state. The experiment uses a condensate interferometer both to find this 'tune-out' wavelength and to accurately determine the light polarization for it. The wavelength lies between the D1 and D2 spectral lines at 790.03235(3) nm. The measurement is sensitive to the tensor contribution to the polarizability, which has been removed so that the reported value is the zero of the scalar polarizability. The precision is fifty times better than pr…

We report a precision measurement of a tune-out wavelength for 87Rb using circularly polarized light. A tune-out wavelength characterizes a zero in the electric polarizability of the atom. For circularly polarized light, the total polarizability depends on both the scalar and vector polarizability components. This shifts the location of the tune-out wavelength and makes it sensitive to different combinations of atomic dipole matrix elements than the scalar polarizability alone. Using $σ_-$ polarized light with an an estimated purity of 0.9931(1), we observe a tune-out wavelength of 785.1522(3)…
The influence of hyperfine interactions on the tune-out wavelengths of the $^{39,40,41}$K isotopes of the potassium atom was investigated. The hyperfine interaction of the $4s_{1/2}$ state result in a shift and splitting of the primary tune-out wavelength near 769 nm. The $4s_{1/2}$ ground state hyperfine splittings of the primary tune-out were almost equal to the hyperfine splittings of the ground states. The splittings in the wavelengths were 0.0008, 0.0027 and 0.0005 nm for $^{39}$K, $^{40}$K and $^{41}$K respectively. The hyperfine splitting of the $np_{J}$ levels leads to the creation of …
Tune-out wavelengths measured with an atom interferometer are sensitive to laboratory rotation rates because of the Sagnac effect, vector polarizability, and dispersion compensation. We observed shifts in measured tune-out wavelengths as large as 213 pm with a potassium atom beam interferometer, and we explore how these shifts can be used for an atom interferometer gyroscope.
The static and dynamic electric-dipole polarizabilities and tune-out wavelengths for the ground state of Cs atoms are calculated by using a semiempirical relativistic configuration interaction plus core polarization approach. By considering the hyperfine splittings, the static and dynamic polarizabilities, hyperfine Stark shifts, and tune-out wavelengths of the hyperfine components of the ground level of $^{133}$Cs atoms are determined. It is found that the hyperfine shifts of the first primary tune-out wavelengths are about $-$0.0135 nm and 0.0106 nm, which are very close to the hyperfine int…
The five longest tune-out wavelengths for the potassium atom are determined using a relativistic structure model which treats the atom as consisting of a single valence electron moving outside a closed shell core. The importance of various terms in the dynamic polarizability in the vicinity of the $4p_J$, $5p_J$ and $6p_J$ transitions are discussed.
We demonstrate a versatile, rotational-state dependent trapping scheme for the ground and first excited rotational states of $^{23}$Na$^{40}$K molecules. Close to the rotational manifold of a narrow electronic transition, we determine tune-out frequencies where the polarizability of one state vanishes while the other remains finite, and a magic frequency where both states experience equal polarizability. The proximity of these frequencies of only 10 GHz allows for dynamic switching between different trap configurations in a single experiment, while still maintaining sufficiently low scattering…
The static and dynamic polarizabilities, and the tune-out wavelengths of the ground state of Rb and the hyperfine ground states of $^{87, 85}$Rb have been calculated by using relativistic configuration interaction plus core polarization(RCICP) approach. It is found that the first primary tune-out wavelengths of the $ 5s_{1/2}, F=1, 2 $ states of $ ^{87}$Rb are 790.018187(193) nm and 790.032602(193) nm severally, where the calculated result for the $ 5s_{1/2}, F=2 $ state is in good agreement with the latest high-precision measurement 790.032388(32) nm [Phys. Rev. A 92, 052501 (2015)]. Similarl…
We present the first measurement for helium atoms of the tune-out wavelength at which the atomic polarizability vanishes. We utilise a novel, highly sensitive technique for precisely measuring the effect of variations in the trapping potential of confined metastable ($2^{3}S_{1}$) helium atoms illuminated by a perturbing laser light field. The measured tune-out wavelength of 413.0938($9_{Stat.}$)($20_{Syst.}$) nm compares well with the value predicted by a theoretical calculation (413.02(9) nm) which is sensitive to finite nuclear mass, relativistic, and quantum electro-dynamic (QED) effects. …
Comparison of high accuracy calculations with precision measurement of the 413 nm tune-out wavelength of the He($2\,^3S_1$) state provides a unique test of quantum electro-dynamic (QED). We perform large-scale relativistic-configuration-interaction (RCI) calculations of the tune-out wavelength, that include the mass-shift operator, and fully account for leading relativistic nuclear recoil terms in the Dirac-Coulomb-Breit (DCB) Hamiltonian. We obtain the QED correction to the tune-out wavelength using perturbation theory, and the effect of finite nuclear size is also evaluated. The resulting tu…
Accurate values for atomic dipole matrix elements are useful in many areas of physics, and in particular for interpreting experiments such as atomic parity violation. Obtaining accurate matrix element values is a challenge for both experiment and theory. A new technique that can be applied to this problem is tune-out spectroscopy, which is the measurement of light wavelengths where the electric polarizability of an atom has a zero. Using atom interferometry methods, tune-out wavelengths can be measured very accurately. Their values depend on the ratios of various dipole matrix elements and are…
Intensity modulated optical lattice potentials can change sign for an alkali metal Rydberg atom, and the atoms are not always attracted to intensity minima in optical lattices with wavelengths near the CO$_2$ laser band. Here we demonstrate that such IR lattices can be tuned so that the trapping potential seen by the Rydberg atom can be made to vanish for atoms in \targeted" Rydberg states. Such state selective trapping of Rydberg atoms can be useful in controlled cold Rydberg collisions, cooling Rydberg states, and species-selective trapping and transport of Rydberg atoms in optical lattices.…
Atom interferometers typically use the total populations the interferometer's output ports as the signal, but finer spatial structure can contain useful information. We pattern a matter-wave phase profile onto an atomic sample. An interferometer translates the phase into a measurable pattern in the atomic density that we use perform the first direct precision measurement of the $^7$Li tune-out wavelength near 671 nm. Expressed as a detuning from the $|2S_{1/2},F{=}2\rangle{\rightarrow}|2P_{1/2},F'{=}2\rangle$ transition, we find 3329.3(1.4) MHz for the tensor-shifted tune out of the $|2S_{1/2}…
We demonstrate an atom interferometer operating on the $^1S_0-{}^3P_0$ clock transition of $^{87}$Sr atoms in a "magic" optical guide, where the light shift perturbations of the guiding potential are canceled. As a proof-of-principle demonstration, a Mach-Zehnder interferometer is set horizontally to map the acceleration introduced by the focused optical guide. This magic guide interferometer on the clock transition is applicable to atomic elements where magic wavelengths can be found. Possible applications of the magic guide interferometer, including a hollow-core fiber interferometer and gra…
We perform a measurement of the tune-out wavelength, $λ_{0}$, between the $D_{1}$, $6^2S_{1/2}\rightarrow6^2P_{1/2}$, and $D_{2}$, $6^2S_{1/2}\rightarrow6^2P_{3/2}$, transitions for $^{133}$Cs in the ground hyperfine state $(F=3, m_{F}=+3)$. At $λ_{0}$, the frequency-dependent scalar polarizability is zero leading to a zero scalar ac Stark shift. We measure the polarizability as a function of wavelength using Kapitza-Dirac scattering of a $^{133}$Cs Bose-Einstein condensate in a one-dimensional optical lattice, and determine the tune-out wavelength to be $λ_{0}=880.21790(40)_{\textrm{stat}}(8)…
In continuation to our earlier reported data on the electric dipole (E1) matrix elements and lifetimes of the metastable states of the alkaline earth ions in [Atomic Data and Nuc. Data Tables {\bf 137} (2021) 101381], we present here the tune-out and magic wavelengths of the Mg$^+$, Ca$^+$, Sr$^+$ and Ba$^+$ alkaline earth-metal ions by determining dynamic E1 polarizabilities. Furthermore, we have evaluated the electric quadrupole (E2) matrix elements of a large number of forbidden transitions using an all-order relativistic many-body method and compare them with the previously reported values…
The frequency dependent polarizabilities of the francium atom are calculated from the available data of energy levels and transition rates. Magic wavelengths for the state insensitive optical dipole trapping are identified from the calculated light shifts of the $7s~^2S_{1/2}$, $7p~^2P_{1/2, 3/2}$ and $8s~^{2}S_{1/2}$ levels of the $7s~^{2}S_{1/2}-7p~^{2}P_{1/2,3/2}$ and $7s~^{2}S_{1/2}-8s~^{2}S_{1/2}$ transitions, respectively. Wavelengths in the ultraviolet, visible and near infrared region is identified that are suitable for cooling and trapping. Magic wavelengths between 600-700~nm and 700…
Experiments with vortex beams have shown a surge of interest in controlling cold atoms. Most of the controlling protocols are dominated by circularly polarized light due to its ability to induce vector polarization at atoms, which is impossible for paraxial linearly polarized light. Here we develop a theory for frequency dependent polarizability of an atomic state interacting with a focused linearly polarized vortex beam. The naturally induced spin-orbit coupling in this type of linearly polarized beam produces vector component of the valence polarizability to an atomic state, obeying the tota…
The workhorse of atomic physics, quantum electrodynamics, is one of the best-tested theories in physics. However recent discrepancies have shed doubt on its accuracy for complex atomic systems. To facilitate the development of the theory further we aim to measure transition dipole matrix elements of metastable helium (He*) (the ideal 3 body test-bed) to the highest accuracy thus far. We have undertaken a measurement of the `tune-out wavelength' which occurs when the contributions to the dynamic polarizability from all atomic transitions sum to zero; thus illuminating an atom with this waveleng…
We present additional magic wavelengths ($λ_{\rm{magic}}$) for the clock transitions in the alkaline-earth metal ions considering circular polarized light aside from our previously reported values in [J. Kaur et al., Phys. Rev. A {\bf 92}, 031402(R) (2015)] for the linearly polarized light. Contributions from the vector component to the dynamic dipole polarizabilities ($α_d(ω)$) of the atomic states associated with the clock transitions play major roles in the evaluation of these $λ_{\rm{magic}}$, hence facilitating in choosing circular polarization of lasers in the experiments. Moreover, the …
We present precise values of the dipole polarizabilities ($α$) of the ground $\rm [4f^{14}6s] ~ ^2S_{1/2}$ and metastable $\rm [4f^{14} 5d] ~ ^2D_{3/2}$ states of Yb$^+$, that are %vital {\bf important} in reducing systematics in the clock frequency of the $\rm[4f^{14}6s] ~ ^2S_{1/2} \rightarrow [4f^{14}5d] ~ ^2D_{3/2}$ transition. The static values of $α$ for the ground and $\rm [4f^{14} 5d] ~ ^2D_{3/2}$ states are estimated to be $9.8(1) \times 10^{-40} \,\,\rm Jm^2V^{-2}$ and $17.6(5) \times 10^{-40}\,\, \rm Jm^2V^{-2}$, respectively, while the tensor contribution to the $\rm [4f^{14} 5d] ~…
The distance-dependence of the anisotropic atom-wall interaction is studied. The central result is the 1/z^6 quadrupolar anisotropy decay in the retarded Casimir-Polder regime. Analysis of the transition region between non-retarded van der Waals regime (in 1/z^3) and Casimir-Polder regime shows that the anisotropy cross-over occurs at very short distances from the surface, on the order of 0.03 Lambda, where Lambda is the atom characteristic wavelength. Possible experimental verifications of this distance dependence are discussed.
We calculate and measure the magic wavelengths for the $6s^2{}\,^1S_0-6s6p\,{}^3P_1$ intercombination transition of the neutral ytterbium atom. The calculation is performed with the \textit{ab initio} configuration interaction (CI) + all-order method. The measurement is done with laser spectroscopy on cold atoms in an optical dipole trap. The magic wavelengths are determined to be 1035.68(4) nm for the $π$ transition ($Δm = 0$) and 1036.12(3) nm for the $σ$ transitions ($|Δm| = 1$) in agreement with the calculated values. Laser cooling on the narrow intercombination transition could achieve be…
The dynamic polarizabilities of the atomic states with angular momentum $j> \frac12$ are sensitive to the angle between the quantization axis $\hat{e}_z$ and the polarization vector $\hat{\mathbfε}$ owing to the contribution of anisotropic tensor polarizabilities. The magic wavelength, at which the differential Stark shift of an atomic transition nullifies, depends on this angle. We identified the magic wavelengths for the $4s_{\frac12}\to3d_{\frac32,\frac52}$ transitions of Ca$^{+}$ ions at different angles between $\hat{e}_z$ and $\hat{\mathbfε}$ in the case of linearly polarized light. We f…
