The aim of this paper is to study a PDE model for two diffusing species interacting by local size exclusion and global attraction. This leads to a nonlinear degenerate cross-diffusion system, for which we provide a global existence result. The analysis is motivated by the formulation of the system as a formal gradient flow for an appropriate energy functional consisting of entropic terms as well as quadratic nonlocal terms. Key ingredients are entropy dissipation methods as well as the recently developed boundedness by entropy principle. Moreover, we investigate phase separation effects inherent in the cross-diffusion model by an analytical and numerical study of minimizers of the energy functional and their asymptotics to a previously studied case as the diffusivity tends to zero. Finally we briefly discuss coarsening dynamics in the system, which can be observed in numerical results and is motivated by rewriting the PDEs as a system of nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equations.
We revisit a classical continuum model for the diffusion of multiple species with size-exclusion constraint, which leads to a degenerate nonlinear cross-diffusion system. The purpose of this article is twofold: first, it aims at a systematic study of the question of existence of weak solutions and their long-time asymptotic behaviour. Second, it provides a weak-strong stability estimate for a wide range of coefficients, which had been missing so far. In order to achieve the results mentioned above, we exploit the formal gradient-flow structure of the model with respect to a logarithmic entropy…
We study a class of free boundary systems with nonlocal diffusion, which are natural extensions of the corresponding free boundary problems of reaction diffusion systems. As before the free boundary represents the spreading front of the species, but here the population dispersal is described by "nonlocal diffusion" instead of "local diffusion". We prove that such a nonlocal diffusion problem with free boundary has a unique global solution, and for models with Lotka-Volterra type competition or predator-prey growth terms, we show that a spreading-vanishing dichotomy holds, and obtain criteria f…
Nonlocal cross-diffusion systems on the torus, arising in population dynamics and neuroscience, are analyzed. The global existence of weak solutions, the weak-strong uniqueness, and the localization limit are proved. The kernels are assumed to be positive definite and in detailed balance. The proofs are based on entropy estimates coming from Shannon-type and Rao-type entropies, while the weak-strong uniqueness result follows from the relative entropy method. The existence and uniqueness theorems hold for nondifferentiable kernels. The associated local cross-diffusion system, derived in the loc…
We consider a three-species predator-prey system involving two competing predators and one prey. The species diffuse with nonlocal dispersal kernels with possibly non-compact support, and they interact in a heterogeneous environment moving with a positive forced speed such that the environment is favorable to the prey in the absence of predators far ahead of the shifting boundary and it is unfavorable far behind. Such systems arise in the modeling of population dynamics under the effect of a shifting environment, such as climate change. We show on the one hand the existence of waves connecting…
We are concerned with the persistence of both predator and prey in a diffusive predator-prey system with a climate change effect, which is modeled by a spatial-temporal heterogeneity depending on a moving variable. Moreover, we consider both the cases of nonlocal and local dispersal. In both these situations, we first prove the existence of forced waves, which are positive stationary solutions in the moving frames of the climate change, of either front or pulse type. Then we address the persistence or extinction of the prey and the predator separately in various moving frames, and achieve a co…
This paper is devoted to a nonlocal dispersal logistic model with seasonal succession in one-dimensional bounded habitat, where the seasonal succession accounts for the effect of two different seasons. Firstly, we provide the persistence-extinction criterion for the species, which is different from that for local diffusion model. Then we show the asymptotic profile of the time-periodic positive solution as the species persists in long run.
We explore the dynamical behavior and energetic properties of a model of two species that interact nonlocally on finite graphs. The authors recently introduced the model in the context of nonquadratic Finslerian gradient flows on generalized graphs featuring nonlinear mobilities. In a continuous and local setting, this class of systems exhibits a wide variety of patterns, including mixing of the two species, partial engulfment, or phase separation. This work showcases how this rich behavior carries over to the graph structure. We present analytical and numerical evidence thereof.
We consider a two-species simple exclusion process on a periodic lattice. We use the method of matched asymptotics to derive evolution equations for the two population densities in the dilute regime, namely a cross-diffusion system of partial differential equations for the two species densities. First, our result captures non-trivial interaction terms neglected in the mean-field approach, including a non-diagonal mobility matrix with explicit density dependence. Second, it generalises the rigorous hydrodynamic limit of Quastel [Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 45(6), 623--679 (1992)], valid for specie…
We study the mathematical theory of second order systems with two species, arising in the dynamics of interacting particles subject to linear damping, to nonlocal forces and to external ones, and resulting into a nonlocal version of the compressible Euler system with linear damping. Our results are limited to the $1$ space dimensional case but allow for initial data taken in a Wasserstein space of probability measures. We first consider the case of smooth nonlocal interaction potentials, not subject to any symmetry condition, and prove existence and uniqueness. The concept of solutions relies …
In this paper, we consider the following single species model with nonlocal dispersal strategy $$ d\mathcal {L} [θ] (x,t) + θ(x,t) [m(x)- θ(x,t)]=0 , $$ where $\mathcal {L}$ denotes the nonlocal diffusion operator, and investigate how the dispersal rate of the species and the distribution of resources affect the total population. First, we show that the upper bound for the ratio between total population and total resource is $C\sqrt{d}$. Moreover, examples are constructed to indicate that this upper bound is optimal. Secondly, for a type of simplified nonlocal diffusion operator, we prove that…
We prove existence and Sobolev regularity of solutions of a nonlinear system of degenerate-parabolic PDEs with self- and cross-diffusion, transport/confinement and nonlocal interaction terms. The macroscopic system of PDEs is formally derived from a large particle system and models the evolution of an arbitrary number of species with quadratic porous-medium interactions in a bounded domain $Ω$ in any spatial dimension. The cross interactions between different species are scaled by a parameter $δ<1$, with the $δ= 0$ case corresponding to no interactions across species. A smallness condition on …
This paper is concerned with a Lotka-Volterra type competition model with free boundaries in time-periodic environment. One species is assumed to adopt nonlocal dispersal and the other one adopts mixed dispersal, which is a combination of both random dispersal and nonlocal dispersal. We show that this free boundary problem with more general growth functions admits a unique solution defined for all time. A spreading-vanishing dichotomy is obtained and criteria for spreading and vanishing are provided. Moreover, under the weak competition condition we provide the long-time asymptotic behavior of…
We present a new finite volume method for computing numerical approximations of a system of nonlocal transport equation modeling interacting species. This method is based on the work [F. Delarue, F. Lagoutire, N. Vauchelet, Convergence analysis of upwind type schemes for the aggregation equation with pointy potential, Ann. Henri. Lebesgue 2019], where the nonlocal continuity equations are 10 treated as conservative transport equations with a nonlocal, nonlinear, rough velocity field. We analyze some properties of the method, and illustrate the results with numerical simulations.
We study the evolution of a system of two species with nonlinear mobility and nonlocal interactions on a graph whose vertices are given by an arbitrary, positive measure. To this end, we extend a recently introduced $2$-Wasserstein-type quasi-metric on generalized graphs, which is based on an upwind-interpolation, to the case of two-species systems, concave, nonlinear mobilities, and $p\ne 2$. We provide a rigorous interpretation of the interaction system as a gradient flow in the Finslerian setting, arising from the new quasi-metric.
In this paper, we gives a complete classification of the global dynamics of two- species Lotka-Volterra competition models with nonlocal dispersals: where K, P represent nonlocal operators, under the assumptions that the nonlo- cal operators are symmetric, the models admit two semi-trivial steady states and 0<bc<1. In particular, when both semi-trivial steady states are locally stable, it is proved that there exist infinitely many steady states and the solution with non- negative and nontrivial initial data converges to some steady state. Furthermore, we generalize these results to the case th…
Deriving emergent patterns from models of biological processes is a core concern of mathematical biology. In the context of partial differential equations (PDEs), these emergent patterns sometimes appear as local minimisers of a corresponding energy functional. Here we give methods for determining the qualitative structure of local minimum energy states of a broad class of multi-species nonlocal advection-diffusion models, recently proposed for modelling the spatial structure of ecosystems. We show that when each pair of species respond to one another in a symmetric fashion (i.e. via mutual av…
We introduce and study a class of free boundary models with "nonlocal diffusion", which are natural extensions of the free boundary models in Du and Lin [17] and elsewhere, where "local diffusion" is used to describe the population dispersal, with the free boundary representing the spreading front of the species. We show that this nonlocal problem has a unique solution defined for all time, and then examine its long-time dynamical behavior when the growth function is of Fisher-KPP type. We prove that a spreading-vanishing dichotomy holds, though for the spreading-vanishing criteria significant…
In this paper, we prove the local-controllability to positive constant trajectories of a nonlinear system of two coupled ODE equations, posed in the one-dimensional spatial setting, with nonlocal spatial nonlinearites, and using only one localized control with a moving support. The model we deal with is derived from the well-known nonlinear reaction-diffusion Gray-Scott model when the diffusion coefficient of the first chemical species $d_u$ tends to $0$ and the diffusion coefficient of the second chemical species ${d_v}$ tends to $+ \infty$. The strategy of the proof consists in two main step…
