We consider the dynamics of strongly localized systems subject to dephasing noise with arbitrary correlation time. Although noise inevitably induces delocalization, transport in the noise-induced delocalized phase is subdiffusive in a parametrically large intermediate-time window. We argue for this intermediate-time subdiffusive regime both analytically and using numerical simulations on single-particle localized systems. Furthermore, we show that normal diffusion is restored in the long-time limit, through processes analogous to variable-range hopping. With numerical simulations based on Lanczos exact diagonalization, we demonstrate that our qualitative conclusions are also valid for interacting systems in the many-body localized phase.
We explore thermalization and quantum dynamics in a one-dimensional disordered SU(2)-symmetric Floquet model, where a many-body localized phase is prohibited by the non-abelian symmetry. Despite the absence of localization, we find an extended nonergodic regime at strong disorder where the system exhibits nonthermal behaviors. In the strong disorder regime, the level spacing statistics exhibit neither a Wigner-Dyson nor a Poisson distribution, and the spectral form factor does not show a linear-in-time growth at early times characteristic of random matrix theory. The average entanglement entro…
We consider the propagation of a single particle in a random chain, assisted by the coupling to dispersive bosons. Time evolution treated with rate equations for hopping between localized states reveals a qualitative difference between dynamics due to noninteracting bosons and hard-core bosons. In the first case the transient dynamics is subdiffusive, but multi-boson processes allow for long-time normal diffusion, while hard-core effects suppress multi-boson processes leading to persistent subdiffusive transport, consistent with numerical results for a full many-body evolution. In contrast, an…
We study spin transport in a Hubbard chain with strong, random, on--site potential and with spin--dependent hopping integrals, $t_σ$. For the the SU(2) symmetric case, $t_{\uparrow} =t_{\downarrow}$, such model exhibits only partial many-body localization with localized charge and (delocalized) subdiffusive spin excitations. Here, we demonstrate that breaking the SU(2) symmetry by even weak spin--asymmetry, $t_{\uparrow} \ne t_{\downarrow}$, localizes spins and restores full many-body localization. To this end we derive an effective spin model, where the spin subdiffusion is shown to be destro…
Enhancement of chaotic subdiffusion in disordered ladders with synthetic gauge fields
We study the strong disorder regime of Floquet topological systems in dimension two, that describe independent electrons on a lattice subject to a periodic driving. In the spectrum of the Floquet propagator we assume the existence of an interval in which all states are localized--a mobility gap. First we generalize the relative construction from spectral to mobility gap, define a bulk index for an infinite sample and an edge index for the half-infinite one and prove the bulk-edge correspondence. Second, we consider completely localized systems where the mobility gap is the whole circle, and de…
