A matrix A is image partition regular over Q provided that whenever Q - {0} is finitely coloured, there is a vector x with entries in Q - {0} such that the entries of Ax are monochromatic. It is kernel partition regular over Q provided that whenever Q - {0} is finitely coloured, the matrix has a monochromatic member of its kernel. We establish a duality for these notions valid for both finite and infinite matrices. We also investigate the extent to which this duality holds for matrices partition regular over proper subsemigroups of Q.
The notion of Image partition regularity near zero was first introduced by De and Hindman. It was shown there that like image partition regularity over $\mathbb{N}$ the main source of infinite image partition regular matrices near zero are Milliken- Taylor matrices. But Milliken- Taylor matrices are far apart to have images in central sets. In this regard the notion of centrally image partition regularity was introduced. In the present paper we propose the notion centrally partition regular matrices near zero for dense sub semigroup of $(\ber^+,+)$ which are different from centrally partition …
An infinite integer matrix A is called image partition regular if, whenever the natural numbers are finitely coloured, there is an integer vector x such that Ax is monochromatic. Given an image partition regular matrix A, can we also insist that each variable x_i is a multiple of some given d_i? This is a question of Hindman, Leader and Strauss. Our aim in this short note is to show that the answer is negative. As an application, we disprove a conjectured equivalence between the two main forms of partition regularity, namely image partition regularity and kernel partition regularity.
We prove that a certain matrix, which is not image partition regular over R near zero, is image partition regular over N. This answers a question of De and Hindman.
Inspired by the paper [1] of V. Bergelson, John H.Johnson Jr., J. Moreira, we formulate an abstract version of image partition regularity. To establish the result we have used a variant of first entry condition and for infinite case we contained our work to Milliken-Taylor system.
We give a new approach to handling hypergraph regularity. This approach allows for vertex-by-vertex embedding into regular partitions of hypergraphs, and generalises to regular partitions of sparse hypergraphs. We also prove a corresponding sparse hypergraph regularity lemma.
We say that the system of equations $Ax=b$, where $A$ is an integer matrix and $b$ is a (non-zero) integer vector, is partition regular if whenever the integers are finitely coloured there is a monochromatic vector $x$ with $Ax=b$. Rado proved that the system $Ax=b$ is partition regular if and only if it has a constant solution. Byszewski and Krawczyk asked if this remains true when the integers are replaced by a general ring $R$. Our aim in this note is to answer this question in the affirmative. The main ingredient is a new `direct' proof of Rado's result.
A system of homogeneous linear equations with integer coefficients is partition regular if, whenever the natural numbers are finitely coloured, the system has a monochromatic solution. The Finite Sums theorem provided the first example of an infinite partition regular system of equations. Since then, other such systems of equations have been found, but each can be viewed as a modification of the Finite Sums theorem. We present here a new infinite partition regular system of equations that appears to arise in a genuinely different way. This is the first example of a partition regular system in …
We introduce the multiset partition algebra, ${\rm M\!P}_{r,k}(x)$, that has bases elements indexed by multiset partitions, where $x$ is an indeterminate and $r$ and $k$ are non-negative integers. This algebra can be realized as a diagram algebra that generalizes the partition algebra. When $x$ is an integer greater or equal to $2r$, we show that ${\rm M\!P}_{r,k}(x)$ is isomorphic to a centralizer algebra of the symmetric group, $S_n$, acting on the polynomial ring on the variables $x_{ij}$, $1\leq i \leq n$ and $1\leq j\leq k$. We describe the representations of ${\rm M\!P}_{r,k}(x)$, branch…
We highlight a topological aspect of the graph limit theory. Graphons are limit objects for convergent sequences of dense graphs. We introduce the representation of a graphon on a unique metric space and we relate the dimension of this metric space to the size of regularity partitions. We prove that if a graphon has an excluded induced sub-bigraph then the underlying metric space is compact and has finite packing dimension. It implies in particular that such graphons have regularity partitions of polynomial size.
The regularity lemma of Szemeredi asserts that one can partition every graph into a bounded number of quasi-random bipartite graphs. In some applications however, one would like to have a strong control on how quasi-random these bipartite graphs are. Alon, Fischer, Krivelevich and Szegedy obtained a powerful variant of the regularity lemma, which allows one to have an arbitrary control on this measure of quasi-randomness. However, their proof only guaranteed to produce a partition where the number of parts is given by the Wowzer function, which is the iterated version of the Tower function. We…
Szemerédi's regularity lemma and its variants are some of the most powerful tools in combinatorics. In this paper, we establish several results around the regularity lemma. First, we prove that whether or not we include the condition that the desired vertex partition in the regularity lemma is equitable has a minimal effect on the number of parts of the partition. Second, we use an algorithmic version of the (weak) Frieze--Kannan regularity lemma to give a substantially faster deterministic approximation algorithm for counting subgraphs in a graph. Previously, only an exponential dependence fo…
Some of the classical results of Ramsey Theory can be naturally stated in terms of image partition regularity of matrices. There have been many significant results of image partition regular matrices as well as image partition regular matrices near zero. Here, we are investigating image partition regularity near an idempotent of an arbitrary Hausdorff semitopological semigroup (T, +) and a dense subsemigroup S of T . We describe some combinatorial applications on finite as well as infinite image partition regular matrices based on the Central Sets Theorem near an idempotent of T .
A finite or infinite matrix A with rational entries is called partition regular if whenever the natural numbers are finitely coloured there is a monochromatic vector x with Ax=0. Many of the classical theorems of Ramsey Theory may naturally be interpreted as assertions that particular matrices are partition regular. In the finite case, Rado proved that a matrix is partition regular if and only it satisfies a computable condition known as the columns property. The first requirement of the columns property is that some set of columns sums to zero. In the infinite case, much less is known. There …
In \cite{dehind1}, the concept of image partition regularity near zero was first instigated. In contrast to the finite case , infinite image partition regular matrices near zero are very fascinating to analyze. In this regard the abstraction of Centrally image partition regular matrices near zero was introduced in \cite{biswaspaul}. In this paper we propose the notion of matrices that are C-image partition regular near zero for dense subsemigropus of $((0,\infty),+)$.
Recently, S.~Kanti Patra and Md.~Moid Shaik proved the existence of monochromatic solutions to systems of polynomial equations near zero for particular dense subsemigroups $S$ of $((0,\infty),+)$. We extend their results to a much larger class of systems whilst weakening the requests on $S$, using solely basic results about ultrafilters.
We show how multiplicatively syndetic sets can be used in the study of partition regularity of dilation invariant systems of polynomial equations. In particular, we prove that a dilation invariant system of polynomial equations is partition regular if and only if it has a solution inside every multiplicatively syndetic set. We also adapt the methods of Green-Tao and Chow-Lindqvist-Prendiville to develop a syndetic version of Roth's density increment strategy. This argument is then used to obtain bounds on the Rado numbers of configurations of the form $\{x, d, x + d, x + 2d\}$.
We consider systems of $n$ diagonal equations in $k$th powers. Our main result shows that if the coefficient matrix of such a system is sufficiently non-singular, then the system is partition regular if and only if it satisfies Rado's columns condition. Furthermore, if the system also admits constant solutions, then we prove that the system has non-trivial solutions over every set of integers of positive upper density.
A linear equation L is called k-regular if every k-coloring of the positive integers contains a monochromatic solution to L. Richard Rado conjectured that for every positive integer k, there exists a linear equation that is (k-1)-regular but not k-regular. We prove this conjecture by showing that the equation $\sum_{i=1}^{k-1} \frac{2^i}{2^i-1} x_i = (-1 + \sum_{i=1}^{k-1} \frac{2^i}{2^i-1}) x_0$ has this property. This conjecture is part of problem E14 in Richard K. Guy's book "Unsolved problems in number theory", where it is attributed to Rado's 1933 thesis, "Studien zur Kombinatorik".
Suppose that $A$ is a $k \times d$ matrix of integers and write $\mathfrak{R}_A:\mathbb{N} \rightarrow \mathbb{N}\cup \{ \infty\}$ for the function taking $r$ to the largest $N$ such that there is an $r$-colouring $\mathcal{C}$ of $[N]$ with $\bigcup_{C \in \mathcal{C}}{C^d}\cap \ker A =\emptyset$. We show that if $\mathfrak{R}_A(r)<\infty$ for all $r \in \mathbb{N}$ then $\mathfrak{R}_A(r) \leq \exp (\exp(r^{O_{A}(1)}))$ for all $r \geq 2$. When the kernel of $A$ consists only of Brauer configurations -- that is vectors of the form $(y,x,x+y,\dots,x+(d-2)y)$ -- the above has been proved by Ch…
Generalising results of Erdős-Freud and Lindström, we prove that the largest Sidon subset of a bounded interval of integers is equidistributed in Bohr neighbourhoods. We establish this by showing that extremal Sidon sets are Fourier-pseudorandom, in that they have no large non-trivial Fourier coefficients. As a further application we deduce that, for any partition regular equation in five or more variables, every finite colouring of an extremal Sidon set has a monochromatic solution.
We prove that the permutations of $\{1,\dots, n\}$ having an increasing (resp., decreasing) subsequence of length $n-r$ index a subset of the set of all $r$th Kronecker powers of $n \times n$ permutation matrices which is a basis for the linear span of that set. Thanks to a known Schur--Weyl duality, this gives a new basis for the centralizer algebra of the partition algebra acting on the $r$th tensor power of a vector space. We give some related results on the set of doubly stochastic matrices in that algebra.

Let $G$ be a finite group and $χ: G \rightarrow \mathbb{C}$ a class function. Let $H = (V,E)$ be a directed graph with for each vertex a cyclic order of the edges incident to it. The cyclic orders give a collection $F$ of faces of $H$. Define the partition function $P_χ(H) := \sum_{κ: E \rightarrow G}\prod_{v \in V}χ(κ(δ(v)))$, where $κ(δ(v))$ denotes the product of the $κ$-values of the edges incident with $v$ (in order), where the inverse is taken for any edge leaving $v$. Write $χ= \sum_λm_λχ_λ$, where the sum runs over irreducible representations $λ$ of $G$ with character $χ_λ$ and with $m…
Let $α,β,γ\in\mathbb{N}$. We prove that given an $r$-colouring of $\mathbb{F}_p$ with $p$ prime, there are more than $c_{r,α,β,γ} p^2$ solutions to the equation $x^α+y^β=z^γ$ with all of $x,y,z$ of the same colour. Here $c_{r,α,β,γ}>0$ is some constant depending on the number of colours and the exponents in the equation. This is already a new result for $α=β=1$ and $γ=2$, that is to say for the equation $x+y=z^2$.
A natural generalization of a regular (or equitable) partition of a graph, which makes sense also for non-regular graphs, is the so-called weight-regular partition, which gives to each vertex $u\in V$ a weight that equals the corresponding entry $ν_u$ of the Perron eigenvector $\mathbfν$. This paper contains three main results related to weight-regular partitions of a graph. The first is a characterization of weight-regular partitions in terms of double stochastic matrices. Inspired by a characterization of regular graphs by Hoffman, we also provide a new characterization of weight-regularity …
Since the theorems of Schur and van der Waerden, numerous partition regularity results have been proved for linear equations, but progress has been scarce for non-linear ones, the hardest case being equations in three variables. We prove partition regularity for certain equations involving forms in three variables, showing for example that the equations $16x^2+9y^2=n^2$ and $x^2+y^2-xy=n^2$ are partition regular, where $n$ is allowed to vary freely in $\mathbb{N}$. For each such problem we establish a density analogue that can be formulated in ergodic terms as a recurrence property for actions…
Is it possible to color the naturals with finitely many colors so that no Pythagorean triple is monochromatic? This question is even open for two colors. A natural strategy is to show that some small nonbipartite triple systems cannot be realized as a family of Pythagorean triples. It suffices to consider partial triple systems (PTS's), and it is therefore natural to consider the Fano plane, the smallest nonbipartite PTS. We show that the Pythagorean triples do not contain any Fano plane. In fact, our main result is that a much larger family of "ordered" triple systems (viz. those with a certa…
We generalize the stable graph regularity lemma of Malliaris and Shelah to the case of finite structures in finite relational languages, e.g., finite hypergraphs. We show that under the model-theoretic assumption of stability, such a structure has an equitable regularity partition of size polynomial in the reciprocal of the desired accuracy, and such that for each $k$-ary relation and $k$-tuple of parts of the partition, the density is close to either 0 or 1. In addition, we provide regularity results for finite and Borel structures that satisfy a weaker notion that we call almost stability.
In this paper we prove a duality between $k$-noncrossing partitions over $[n]=\{1,...,n\}$ and $k$-noncrossing braids over $[n-1]$. This duality is derived directly via (generalized) vacillating tableaux which are in correspondence to tangled-diagrams \cite{Reidys:07vac}. We give a combinatorial interpretation of the bijection in terms of the contraction of arcs of tangled-diagrams. Furthermore it induces by restriction a bijection between $k$-noncrossing, 2-regular partitions over $[n]$ and $k$-noncrossing braids without isolated points over $[n-1]$. Since braids without isolated points corre…
We study Rado functionals and the maximal condition (first introduced by J. M. Barret et al.) in terms of the partition regularity of mixed systems of linear equations and inequalities. By strengthening the maximal Rado condition, we provide a sufficient condition for the partition regularity of polynomial equations over some infinite subsets of a given commutative ring. By applying these results, we derive an extension of a previous result obtained by M. Di Nasso and L. Luperi Baglini concerning partition regular inhomogeneous polynomials in three variables and also conditions for the partiti…
Szemerédi's regularity lemma is a powerful tool in graph theory. It states that for every large enough graph, there exists a partition of the edge set with bounded size such that most induced subgraphs are quasirandom. When the graph is a definable set $ϕ(x, y)$ in a finite field $F_q$, Tao's algebraic graph regularity lemma shows that there is a partition of the graph $ϕ(x, y)$ such that all induced subgraphs are quasirandom and the error bound on quasirandomness is $O(q^{-1/4})$. In this work we prove an algebraic hypergraph regularity lemma for definable sets in finite fields, thus answerin…
Modern categorical logic as well as the Kripke and topological models of intuitionistic logic suggest that the interpretation of ordinary "propositional" logic should in general be the logic of subsets of a given universe set. Partitions on a set are dual to subsets of a set in the sense of the category-theoretic duality of epimorphisms and monomorphisms--which is reflected in the duality between quotient objects and subobjects throughout algebra. If "propositional" logic is thus seen as the logic of subsets of a universe set, then the question naturally arises of a dual logic of partitions on…
Graphons are analytic objects representing limits of convergent sequences of graphs. Lovász and Szegedy conjectured that every finitely forcible graphon, i.e. any graphon determined by finitely many graph densities, has a simple structure. In particular, one of their conjectures would imply that every finitely forcible graphon has a weak $\varepsilon$-regular partition with the number of parts bounded by a polynomial in $\varepsilon^{-1}$. We construct a finitely forcible graphon $W$ such that the number of parts in any weak $\varepsilon$-regular partition of $W$ is at least exponential in $\v…
Building on previous work of Di Nasso and Luperi Baglini, we provide general necessary conditions for a Diophantine equation to be partition regular. These conditions are inspired by Rado's characterization of partition regular linear homogeneous equations. We conjecture that these conditions are also sufficient for partition regularity, at least for equations whose corresponding monovariate polynomial is linear. This would provide a natural generalization of Rado's theorem. We verify that such a conjecture hold for the equations $x^{2}-xy+ax+by+cz=0$ and $x^{2}-y^{2}+ax+by+cz=0$ for $a,b,c\in…
Szemeredi's Regularity Lemma is a very useful tool of extremal combinatorics. Recently, several refinements of this seminal result were obtained for special, more structured classes of graphs. We survey these results in their rich combinatorial context. In particular, we stress the link to the theory of (structural) sparsity, which leads to alternative proofs, refinements and solutions of open problems. It is interesting to note that many of these classes present challenging problems. Nevertheless, from the point of view of regularity lemma type statements, they appear as "gentle" classes.
