Let $P$ be a poset of size $2^k$ that has a greatest and a least element. We prove that, for sufficiently large $n$, the Boolean lattice $2^{[n]}$ can be partitioned into copies of $P$. This resolves a conjecture of Lonc.
Let $B_n$ be the poset generated by the subsets of $[n]$ with the inclusion as relation and let $P$ be a finite poset. We want to embed $P$ into $B_n$ as many times as possible such that the subsets in different copies are incomparable. The maximum number of such embeddings is asymptotically determined for all finite posets $P$ as $\frac{n \choose \lfloor n/2\rfloor}{M(P)}$, where $M(P)$ denotes the minimal size of the convex hull of a copy of $P$. We discuss both weak and strong (induced) embeddings.
Let $P$ be a partially ordered set. We prove that if $n$ is sufficiently large, then there exists a packing $\mathcal{P}$ of copies of $P$ in the Boolean lattice $(2^{[n]},\subset)$ that covers almost every element of $2^{[n]}$: $\mathcal{P}$ might not cover the minimum and maximum of $2^{[n]}$, and at most $|P|-1$ additional points due to divisibility. In particular, if $|P|$ divides $2^{n}-2$, then the truncated Boolean lattice $2^{[n]}-\{\emptyset,[n]\}$ can be partitioned into copies of $P$. This confirms a conjecture of Lonc from 1991.
An on-line chain partitioning algorithm receives a poset, one element at a time, and irrevocably assigns the element to one of the chains. Over 30 years ago, Szemerédi proved that any on-line algorithm could be forced to use $\binom{w+1}{2}$ chains to partition a poset of width $w$. The maximum number of chains that can be forced on any on-line algorithm remains unknown. In a survey paper by Bosek et al., it is shown that Szemerédi's argument could be improved to obtain a lower bound almost twice as good. Variants of the problem were considered where the class is restricted to posets of bounde…
Let $P$ be a partially ordered set. If the Boolean lattice $(2^{[n]},\subset)$ can be partitioned into copies of $P$ for some positive integer $n$, then $P$ must satisfy the following two trivial conditions: (1) the size of $P$ is a power of $2$, (2) $P$ has a unique maximal and minimal element. Resolving a conjecture of Lonc, it was shown by Gruslys, Leader and Tomon that these conditions are sufficient as well. In this paper, we show that if $P$ only satisfies condition (2), we can still almost partition $2^{[n]}$ into copies of $P$. We prove that if $P$ has a unique maximal and minimal elem…
Let $H$ be an induced subgraph of the hypercube $Q_k$, for some $k$. We show that for some $c = c(H)$, the vertices of $Q_n$ can be partitioned into induced copies of $H$ and a remainder of at most $O(n^c)$ vertices. We also show that the error term cannot be replaced by anything smaller than $\log n$.
We are interested in maximizing the number of pairwise unrelated copies of a poset $P$ in the family of all subsets of $[n]$. We prove that for any $P$ the maximum number of unrelated copies of $P$ is asymptotic to a constant times the largest binomial coefficient. Moreover, the constant has the form $\frac{1}{c(P)}$, where $c(P)$ is the size of the smallest convex closure over all embeddings of $P$ into the Boolean lattice.
The maximum size, $La(n,P)$, of a family of subsets of $[n]=\{1,2,...,n\}$ without containing a copy of $P$ as a subposet, has been intensively studied. Let $P$ be a graded poset. We say that a family $\mathcal{F}$ of subsets of $[n]=\{1,2,...,n\}$ contains a \emph{rank-preserving} copy of $P$ if it contains a copy of $P$ such that elements of $P$ having the same rank are mapped to sets of same size in $\mathcal{F}$. The largest size of a family of subsets of $[n]=\{1,2,...,n\}$ without containing a rank-preserving copy of $P$ as a subposet is denoted by $La_{rp}(n,P)$. Clearly, $La(n,P) \le L…
Let $\mathrm{G}$ be a subgroup of the symmetric group $\mathfrak S(U)$ of all permutations of a countable set $U$. Let $\overline{\mathrm{G}}$ be the topological closure of $\mathrm{G}$ in the function topology on $U^U$. We initiate the study of the poset $\overline{\mathrm{G}}[U]:=\{f[U]\mid f\in \overline{\mathrm{G}}\}$ of images of the functions in $\overline{\mathrm{G}}$, being ordered under inclusion. This set $\overline{\mathrm{G}}[U]$ of subsets of the set $U$ will be called the \emph{poset of copies for} the group $\mathrm{G}$. A denomination being justified by the fact that for every …
Bosek and Krawczyk exhibited an online algorithm for partitioning an online poset of width $w$ into $w^{14\lg w}$ chains. We improve this to $w^{6.5 \lg w + 7}$ with a simpler and shorter proof by combining the work of Bosek & Krawczyk with work of Kierstead & Smith on First-Fit chain partitioning of ladder-free posets. We also provide examples illustrating the limits of our approach.

Until this work, the packing radius of a poset code was only known in the cases where the poset was a chain, a hierarchy, a union of disjoint chains of the same size, and for some families of codes. Our objective is to approach the general case of any poset. To do this, we will divide the problem into two parts. The first part consists in finding the packing radius of a single vector. We will show that this is equivalent to a generalization of a famous NP-hard problem known as "the partition problem". Then, we will review the main results known about this problem giving special attention to th…
Let $H$ be an induced subgraph of the torus $C_k^m$. We show that when $k \ge 3$ is even and $|V(H)|$ divides some power of $k$, then for sufficiently large $n$ the torus $C_k^n$ has a perfect vertex-packing with induced copies of $H$. On the other hand, disproving a conjecture of Gruslys, we show that when $k$ is odd and not a prime power, then there exists $H$ such that $|V(H)|$ divides some power of $k$, but there is no $n$ such that $C_k^n$ has a perfect vertex-packing with copies of $H$. We also disprove a conjecture of Gruslys, Leader and Tan by exhibiting a subgraph $H$ of the $k$-dimen…
Let $\mathcal P(n)$ denote the power set of $[n]$, ordered by inclusion, and let $\mathcal P (n,p)$ denote the random poset obtained from $\mathcal P(n)$ by retaining each element from $\mathcal P (n)$ independently at random with probability $p$ and discarding it otherwise. Given any fixed poset $F$ we determine the threshold for the property that $\mathcal P(n,p)$ contains $F$ as an induced subposet. We also asymptotically determine the number of copies of a fixed poset $F$ in $\mathcal P(n)$. Finally, we obtain a number of results on the Ramsey properties of the random poset $\mathcal P(n,p…
A subfamily $\{F_1,F_2,\dots,F_{|P|}\}\subseteq {\cal F}$ of sets is a copy of a poset $P$ in ${\cal F}$ if there exists a bijection $ϕ:P\rightarrow \{F_1,F_2,\dots,F_{|P|}\}$ such that whenever $x \le_P x'$ holds, then so does $ϕ(x)\subseteq ϕ(x')$. For a family ${\cal F}$ of sets, let $c(P,{\cal F})$ denote the number of copies of $P$ in ${\cal F}$, and we say that ${\cal F}$ is $P$-free if $c(P,{\cal F})=0$ holds. For any two posets $P,Q$ let us denote by $La(n,P,Q)$ the maximum number of copies of $Q$ over all $P$-free families ${\cal F} \subseteq 2^{[n]}$, i.e. $\max\{c(Q,{\cal F}): {\cal…
An on-line chain partitioning algorithm receives the points of the poset from some externally determined list. Being presented with a new point the algorithm learns the comparability status of this new point to all previously presented ones. As each point is received, the algorithm assigns this new point to a chain in an irrevocable manner and this assignment is made without knowledge of future points. Kierstead presented an algorithm using $(5^w-1)/4$ chains to cover each poset of width $w$. Felsner proved that width $2$ posets can be partitioned on-line into $5$ chains. We present an algorit…
A subposet $Q'$ of a poset $Q$ is a copy of a poset $P$ if there is a bijection $f$ between elements of $P$ and $Q'$ such that $x\leq y$ in $P$ iff $f(x)\leq f(y)$ in $Q'$. For posets $P, P'$, let the poset Ramsey number $R(P,P')$ be the smallest $N$ such that no matter how the elements of the Boolean lattice $Q_N$ are colored red and blue, there is a copy of $P$ with all red elements or a copy of $P'$ with all blue elements. We provide some general bounds on $R(P,P')$ and focus on the situation when $P$ and $P'$ are both Boolean lattices. In addition, we give asymptotically tight bounds for t…

An on-line chain partitioning algorithm receives a poset, one element at a time, and irrevocably assigns the element to one of the chains in the partition. The on-line chain partitioning problem involves finding the minimal number of chains needed by an optimal on-line algorithm. Chrobak and Ślusarek considered variants of the on-line chain partitioning problem in which the elements are presented as intervals and intersecting intervals are incomparable. They constructed an on-line algorithm which uses at most $3w-2$ chains, where $w$ is the width of the interval order, and showed that this alg…
Let $G$ be a simple, undirected, finite graph with vertex set $V(G)$ and edge set $E(G)$. A $k$-dimensional box is a Cartesian product of closed intervals $[a_1,b_1]\times [a_2,b_2]\times...\times [a_k,b_k]$. The {\it boxicity} of $G$, $\boxi(G)$ is the minimum integer $k$ such that $G$ can be represented as the intersection graph of $k$-dimensional boxes, i.e. each vertex is mapped to a $k$-dimensional box and two vertices are adjacent in $G$ if and only if their corresponding boxes intersect. Let $\poset=(S,P)$ be a poset where $S$ is the ground set and $P$ is a reflexive, anti-symmetric and…
The poset Ramsey number $R(Q_m,Q_n)$ is the smallest integer $N$ such that any blue-red coloring of the elements of the Boolean lattice $Q_N$ has a blue induced copy of $Q_m$ or a red induced copy of $Q_n$. The weak poset Ramsey number $R_w(Q_m,Q_n)$ is defined analogously, with weak copies instead of induced copies. It is easy to see that $R(Q_m,Q_n) \ge R_w(Q_m,Q_n)$. Axenovich and Walzer showed that $n+2 \le R(Q_2,Q_n) \le 2n+2$. Recently, Lu and Thompson improved the upper bound to $\frac{5}{3}n+2$. In this paper, we solve this problem asymptotically by showing that $R(Q_2,Q_n)=n+O(n/\log …
The Barát-Thomassen conjecture asserts that there is a function $f$ such that for every fixed tree $T$ with $t$ edges, every graph which is $f(t)$-edge-connected with its number of edges divisible by $t$ has a partition of its edges into copies of $T$. This has been proved in the case of paths of length $2^k$ by Thomassen, and recently shown to be true for all paths by Botler, Mota, Oshiro and Wakabayashi. Our goal in this paper is to propose an alternative proof of the path case with a weaker hypothesis: Namely, we prove that there is a function $f$ such that every $24$-edge-connected graph w…
In the area of forbidden subposet problems we look for the largest possible size $La(n,P)$ of a family $\mathcal{F}\subseteq 2^{[n]}$ that does not contain a forbidden inclusion pattern described by $P$. The main conjecture of the area states that for any finite poset $P$ there exists an integer $e(P)$ such that $La(n,P)=(e(P)+o(1))\binom{n}{\lfloor n/2\rfloor}$. In this paper, we formulate three strengthenings of this conjecture and prove them for some specific classes of posets. (The parameters $x(P)$ and $d(P)$ are defined in the paper.) $\bullet$ For any finite connected poset $P$ and $\va…
Let $La(n,P)$ be the maximum size of a family of subsets of $[n]=\{1,2,...,n\}$ not containing $P$ as a (weak) subposet. The diamond poset, denoted $B_{2}$, is defined on four elements $x,y,z,w$ with the relations $x<y,z$ and $y,z<w$. $La(n,P)$ has been studied for many posets; one of the major open problems is determining $La(n,B_{2})$. Studying the average number of sets from a family of subsets of $[n]$ on a maximal chain in the Boolean lattice $2^{[n]}$ has been a fruitful method. We use a partitioning of the maximal chains and introduce an induction method to show that $La(n,B_{2})\leq(2.…

Properties of intervals in the lattice of antichains of subsets of a universe of finite size are investigated. New objects and quantities in this lattice are defined. Expressions and numerical values are deduced for the number of connected antichains and the number of fully distinguishing antichains. The latter establish a connection with Stirling numbers of the second kind. Decomposition properties of intervals in the lattice of antichains are proven. A new operator allowing partitioning the full lattice in intervals derived from lower dimensional sub-lattices is introduced. Special posets un…
