Although people have already artificially formed parity--time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry with gain and loss in a balanced manner, it is still a defect that the gain is restricted to semi--classical but not full quantum. Here we propose and analyze a theoretical scheme to realize full quantum oscillator $\mathcal{PT}$--symmetry. The quantum gain is provided by a dissipation optical cavity with blue detuned laser field. After adiabatically eliminating the cavity modes, we give an effective master equation, which is a more complete quantum description compared with non--Hermitian Hamiltonian, to reveal the quantum behaviors of such a gain oscillator. This kind of $\mathcal{PT}$--symmetry can eliminate the dissipation effect in quantum regime. As examples, we finally apply $\mathcal{PT}$--symmetric oscillators to enhance optomechanically induced transparency and to preserve oscillator non--classical state.
We find a one-parameter Gaussian state for an anharmonic oscillator with quadratic and quartic terms, which depends on the energy expectation value. For the weak coupling constant, the Gaussian state is a squeezed state of the vacuum state. However, for the strong coupling constant, the Gaussian state represents a different kind of condensation of bosonic particles through a nonlinear Bogoliubov transformation of the vacuum state.
We derive the energy levels associated with the even-parity wave functions of the harmonic oscillator with an additional delta-function potential at the origin. Our results bring to the attention of students a non-trivial and analytical example of a modification of the usual harmonic oscillator potential, with emphasis on the modification of the boundary conditions at the origin. This problem calls the attention of the students to an inaccurate statement in quantum mechanics textbooks often found in the context of solution of the harmonic oscillator problem.
We consider a trapped ion with a quantized center-of-mass motion in 2D trap potential. With external laser fields the effective (non)linear coupling of two orthogonal vibrational modes can be established via stimulated Raman transition. Nonclassical vibrational states such as squeezed states or two-mode entangled states (Schroedinger cat-like states) can be generated. When the vibrational modes are entangled with internal energy levels the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states can be prepared.
The (3+1)-dimensional Dirac equation with position dependent mass in 4-vector electromagnetic fields is considered. Using two over-simplified examples (the Dirac-Coulomb and Dirac-oscillator fields), we report energy-levels crossing as a spectral property or as an effect of the hidden supersymmetric quantum mechanical language and/or quasi-parity signatures. Under different settings of the related interactions' way-of-coupling into Dirac equation, it is observed that the two ultimate/effective descendents, Dirac-Coulomb and Dirac-oscillator, exhibit different conditions on the energy-levels cr…
An optical realization of the damped quantum oscillator, based on transverse light dynamics in an optical resonator with slowly-moving mirrors, is theoretically suggested. The optical resonator setting provides a simple implementation of the time-dependent Caldirola-Kanai Hamiltonian of the dissipative quantum oscillator, and enables to visualize the effects of damped oscillations in the classical (ray optics) limit and wave packet collapse in the quantum (wave optics) regime.
What is the fate of an oscillator when its inductance and capacitance are varied while its frequency is kept constant? Inspired by this question, we propose a protocol to implement parity-time (PT) symmetry in a lone oscillator. Different forms of constrained variations lead to static, periodic, or arbitrary balanced gain and loss profiles, that can be interpreted as purely imaginary gauge fields. With a state-of-the-art, dynamically tunable LC oscillator comprising synthetic circuit elements, we demonstrate static and Floquet PT breaking transitions, including those at vanishingly small gain …
By encoding a qudit in a harmonic oscillator and investigating the infinite limit, we give an entirely new realization of continuous-variable quantum computation. The generalized Pauli group is generated by number and phase operators for harmonic oscillators. We describe a physical realization in terms of modes in a microwave cavity, coupled via a standard Kerr nonlinearity.
Multi-qubit parity measurements are essential to quantum error correction. Current realizations of these measurements often rely on ancilla qubits, a method that is sensitive to faulty two-qubit gates and which requires significant experimental overhead. We propose a hardware-efficient multi-qubit parity measurement exploiting the bifurcation dynamics of a parametrically driven nonlinear oscillator. This approach takes advantage of the resonator's parametric oscillation threshold which is a function of the joint parity of dispersively coupled qubits, leading to high-amplitude oscillations for …
We present the first experimental microwave realization of the one-dimensional Dirac oscillator, a paradigm in exactly solvable relativistic systems. The experiment relies on a relation of the Dirac oscillator to a corresponding tight-binding system. This tight-binding system is implemented as a microwave system by a chain of coupled dielectric disks, where the coupling is evanescent and can be adjusted appropriately. The resonances of the finite microwave system yields the spectrum of the one-dimensional Dirac oscillator with and without mass term. The flexibility of the experimental set-up a…
We study the bound states of a quantum mechanical system consisting of a simple harmonic oscillator with an inverse square interaction, whose interaction strength is governed by a constant $α$. The singular form of this potential has doubly-degenerate bound states for $-1/4\leqα<0$ and $α>0$; since the potential is symmetric, these consist of even and odd-parity states. In addition we consider a regularized form of this potential with a constant cutoff near the origin. For this regularized potential, there are also even and odd-parity eigenfunctions for $α\geq-1/4$. For attractive potentials w…
Using the nonlinear realizations of the Virasoro group we construct the action of the Conformal Quantum Mechanics (CQM) with additional harmonic potential. We show that $SL(2,R)$ invariance group of this action is nontrivially embedded in the reparametrization group of the time which is isomorphic to the centerless Virasoro group. We generalize the consideration to the Ermakov systems and construct the action for the time dependent oscillator. Its symmetry group is also the $SL(2,R) \sim SU(1,1)$ group embedded in the Virasoro group in a more complicated way.
In the paper "Observation of Fast Evolution in Parity-Time-Symmetric System" the authors propose a physical apparatus for the realization of a faster than Hermitian evolution. This last appears in contrast with the conclusions obtained in our paper "Some Remarks on Quantum Brachistochrone". We will clarify this apparent contradiction and some problematic aspects of the treatment in [1].
We find a large class of pure and mixed input states with which the phase estimation precision saturates the Cramer-Rao bound under the compound measurements of parity and particle number. We further propose a quantum-phase-estimation protocol for arbitrary input states, through which the precision achieved is always higher than or equal to that obtained via the original input state. We also demonstrate the implementation of the proposed scheme using a nonlinear interferometry and the realization of the nondemolition parity measurement in atomic condensates.
The literature on the exponential Fourier approach to the one-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator problem is revised and criticized. It is shown that the solution of this problem has been built on faulty premises. The problem is revisited via the Fourier sine and cosine transform method and the stationary states are properly determined by requiring definite parity and square-integrable eigenfunctions.
We propose a realization of a charge parity meter based on two double quantum dots alongside a quantum point contact. Such a device is a specific example of the general class of mesoscopic quadratic quantum measurement detectors previously investigated by Mao et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 056803 (2004)]. Our setup accomplishes entangled state preparation by a current measurement alone, and allows the qubits to be effectively decoupled by pinching off the parity meter. Two applications of the parity meter are discussed: the measurement of Bell's inequality in charge qubits and the realization of…
We report the experimental study of a harmonic oscillator in the relativistic regime. The oscillator is composed of Bose-condensed lithium atoms in the third band of an optical lattice, which have an energy-momentum relation nearly identical to that of a massive relativistic particle, with an effective mass reduced below the bare value and a greatly reduced effective speed of light. Imaging the shape of oscillator trajectories at velocities up to 98% of the effective speed of light reveals a crossover from sinusoidal to nearly photon-like propagation. The existence of a maximum velocity causes…
We propose a physical implementation of time and spatial parity transformations, as well as Galilean boosts, in a trapped-ion quantum simulator. By embedding the simulated model into an enlarged simulating Hilbert space, these fundamental symmetry operations can be fully realized and measured with ion traps. We illustrate our proposal with analytical and numerical techniques of prototypical examples with state-of-the-art trapped-ion platforms. These results pave the way for the realization of time and spatial parity transformations in other models and quantum platforms.
Using only linear interactions and a local parity measurement we show how entanglement can be detected between two harmonic oscillators. The scheme generalizes to measure both linear and non-linear functionals of an arbitrary oscillator state. This leads to many applications including purity tests, eigenvalue estimation, entropy and distance measures - all without the need for non-linear interactions or complete state reconstruction. Remarkably, experimental realization of the proposed scheme is already within the reach of current technology with linear optics.
The purpose of this paper is to study the realization theory of quantum linear systems. It is shown that for a general quantum linear system its controllability and observability are equivalent and they can be checked by means of a simple matrix rank condition. Based on controllability and observability a specific realization is proposed for general quantum linear systems in which an uncontrollable and unobservable subspace is identified. When restricted to the passive case, it is found that a realization is minimal if and only if it is Hurwitz stable. Computational methods are proposed to fin…
We show that the elementary modes of the planar harmonic oscillator can be quantised in the framework of quantum mechanics based on pseudo-hermitian hamiltonians. These quantised modes are demonstrated to act as dynamical structures behind a new Jordan - Schwinger realization of the SU(1,1) algebra. This analysis complements the conventional Jordan - Schwinger construction of the SU(2) algebra based on hermitian hamiltonians of a doublet of oscillators.
A multiparticle quantum superposition state has been generated by a novel phase-selective parametric amplifier of an entangled two-photon state. This realization is expected to open a new field of investigations on the persistence of the validity of the standard quantum theory for systems of increasing complexity, in a quasi decoherence-free environment. Because of its nonlocal structure the new system is expected to play a relevant role in the modern endeavor on quantum information and in the basic physics of entanglement.
In this paper various representations of the exceptional Lie algebra G_2 are investigated in a purely algebraic manner, and multi-boson/multi-fermion realizations are obtained. Matrix elements of the master representation, which is defined on the space of the universal enveloping algebra of G_2, are explicitly determined. From this master representation, different indecomposable representations defined on invariant subspaces or quotient spaces with respect to these invariant subspaces are discussed. Especially, the elementary representations of G_2 are investigated in detail, and the correspon…
We consider an electromechanical system where a microwave cavity is coupled to a mechanical resonator, with a mechanical frequency twice the microwave frequency. In this regime, the effective photon-phonon interaction is equivalent to that of a degenerate parametric amplifier, instead of the typical radiation pressure interaction. If the mechanical resonator is strongly driven, it undergoes a phase transition to a state where the energy pumped into the mechanical mode is entirely converted to the photonic mode. Quantum fluctuations smear this phase transition. We describe these effects with a …
We show that parity-time and partial parity-time symmetries are particular cases of antiunitary symmetry. This point is illustrated by means of a recently discussed system of non-Hermitian coupled harmonic oscillators that also exhibits other types of antiunitary symmetries. We also show that a combination of group and perturbation theory is a useful tool for predicting broken antiunitary symmetry.
Non-Gaussian continuous variable states play a central role both in the foundations of quantum theory and for emergent quantum technologies. In particular, "cat states", i.e., two-component macroscopic quantum superpositions, embody quantum coherence in an accessible way and can be harnessed for fundamental tests and quantum information tasks alike. Degenerate optical parametric oscillators can naturally produce single-mode cat states and thus represent a promising platform for their realization and harnessing. We show that a dissipative coupling between degenerate optical parametric oscillato…
Composite bosons, here called {\it quasibosons} (e.g. mesons, excitons, etc.), occur in various physical situations. Quasibosons differ from bosons or fermions as their creation and annihilation operators obey non-standard commutation relations, even for the "fermion+fermion" composites. Our aim is to realize the operator algebra of quasibosons composed of two fermions or two q-fermions (q-deformed fermions) by the respective operators of deformed oscillators, the widely studied objects. For this, the restrictions on quasiboson creation/annihilation operators and on the deformed oscillator (de…
Notwithstanding radical conceptual differences between classical and quantum mechanics, it is usually assumed that physical measurements concern observables common to both theories . Not so with the eigenvalues ($\pm 1$) of the parity operator. The effect of such a measurement on a mixture of even and odd states of the harmonic oscillator is akin to separating at a single stroke a pair of shuffled card decks: the result is a set of definite parity, though otherwise mixed. The Wigner function should be a sensitive probe for this phenomenon, for it can be interpreted as the expectation value of …
The one-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator problem is examined via the Laplace transform method. The stationary states are determined by requiring definite parity and good behaviour of the eigenfunction at the origin and at infinity.
For a better understanding of the physical systems, even at the quantum level, the thermal quantities can be investigated. Recently, we realized that the parity of the system can also be examined simultaneously, by substituting the Dunkl operator with the ordinary differential operator in quantum mechanics. In this manuscript, we consider two relativistic Dunkl-oscillators and investigate their thermal quantities with well-known statistical methods. Besides, we establish a relationship between the Dunkl-Dirac oscillator and the Dunkl-Anti-Jayne-Cummings model by defining the Dunk creation and …
The quantum harmonic oscillator with parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry, obtained from the ordinary (Hermitian) quantum harmonic oscillator by an imaginary displacement of the spatial coordinate, provides an important and exactly-solvable model to investigate non-Hermitian extension of the Ehrenfest theorem. Here it is shown that transverse light dynamics in an optical resonator with off-axis longitudinal pumping can emulate a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric quantum harmonic oscillator, providing an experimentally accessible system to investigate non-Hermitian coherent state propagation.
We apply quantum mechanical sum rules to pairs of one-dimensional systems defined by potential energy functions related by parity. Specifically, we consider symmetric potentials, $V(x) = V(-x)$, and their parity-restricted partners, ones with $V(x)$, but defined only on the positive half-line. We extend recent discussions of sum rules for the quantum bouncer by considering the parity-extended version of this problem, defined by the symmetric linear potential, $V(z) = F|z|$ and find new classes of constraints on the zeros of the Airy function, $Ai(z)$, and its derivative $Ai'(z)$. We also consi…
In this paper, we first discuss the general properties of an intermediate-statistics quantum bracket, $[ u,v]_{n}=uv-e^{i2π/(n+1)}vu$, which corresponds to intermediate statistics in which the maximum occupation number of one quantum state is an arbitrary integer, $n$. A further study of the operator realization of intermediate statistics is given. We construct the intermediate-statistics coherent state. An intermediate-statistics oscillator is constructed, which returns to bosonic and fermionic oscillators respectively when $n\to \infty $ and $n=1$. The energy spectrum of such an intermediate…
Bilayer quantum Hall (BLQH) systems, which underlie a $U(4)$ symmetry, display unique quantum coherence effects. We study coherent states (CS) on the complex Grassmannian $\mathbb G_2^4=U(4)/U(2)^2$, orthonormal basis, $U(4)$ generators and their matrix elements in the reproducing kernel Hilbert space $\mathcal H_λ(\mathbb G_2^4)$ of analytic square-integrable holomorphic functions on $\mathbb G_2^4$, which carries a unitary irreducible representation of $U(4)$ with index $λ\in\mathbb N$. A many-body representation of the previous construction is introduced through an oscillator realization of…
We realize a photonic analog simulator of the quantum Rabi model, based on light transport in femtosecond-laser-written waveguide superlattices, which provides an experimentally accessible testbed to explore the physics of light-matter interaction in the deep strong coupling regime. Our optical setting enables to visualize dynamical regimes not yet accessible in cavity or circuit quantum electrodynamics, such as bouncing of photon number wave packets in parity chains of Hilbert space.
We study in detail the spectrum of the bosonic oscillator Hamiltonian associated with the $C_3$-extended oscillator algebra \algthree, where $C_3$ denotes a cyclic group of order three, and classify the various types of spectra in terms of the algebra parameters $α_0, α_1$. In such a classification, we identify those spectra having an infinite number of periodically spaced levels, similar to those of cyclic shape invariant potentials of period three. We prove that the hierarchy of supersymmetric Hamiltonians and supercharges, corresponding to the latter, can be realized in terms of some approp…
We study how to understand the complex coordinates involved in the non-Hermitian but PT-symmetric systems. We explore a PT-symmetric oscillator model to show that the entire information on the complex position is attainable. Its real part is from the observation while its imaginary part is from the non-Hermiticity parameter. We also propose a new complex extension of P-transformation and T-transformation (the `parity' and `time reflection' respectively). Particularly, the P-transformation realizes the left-right reflection in the complex plane.
We study the synchronization of a van der Pol self-oscillator with Kerr anharmonicity to an external drive. We demonstrate that the anharmonic, discrete energy spectrum of the quantum oscillator leads to multiple resonances in both phase locking and frequency entrainment not present in the corresponding classical system. Strong driving close to these resonances leads to nonclassical steady-state Wigner distributions. Experimental realizations of these genuine quantum signatures can be implemented with current technology.
We discuss a measurement-based implementation of a controlled-NOT (CNOT) quantum gate. Such a gate has recently been discussed for free electron qubits. Here we extend this scheme for qubits encoded in product states of two (or more) spins-1/2 or in equivalent systems. The key to such an extension is to find a feasible qubit-parity meter. We present a general scheme for reducing this qubit-parity meter to a local spin-parity measurement performed on two spins, one from each qubit. Two possible realizations of a multiparticle CNOT gate are further discussed: electron spins in double quantum dot…
Solvability of the ubiquitous quantum harmonic oscillator relies on a spectrum generating osp(1|2) superconformal symmetry. We study the problem of constructing all quantum mechanical models with a hidden osp(1|2) symmetry on a given space of states. This problem stems from interacting higher spin models coupled to gravity. In one dimension, we show that the solution to this problem is the Plyushchay family of quantum mechanical models with hidden superconformal symmetry obtained by viewing the harmonic oscillator as a one dimensional Dirac system, so that Grassmann parity equals wavefunction …
Classical open systems with balanced gain and loss, i.e. parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric systems, have attracted tremendous attention over the past decade. Their exotic properties arise from exceptional point (EP) degeneracies of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians that govern their dynamics. In recent years, increasingly sophisticated models of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric systems with time-periodic (Floquet) driving, time-periodic gain and loss, and time-delayed coupling have been investigated, and such systems have been realized across numerous platforms comprising optics, acoustics, mechanical o…
We investigate the feasibility of performing quantum non-demolition (QND) measurements in relativistic quantum systems, using the one-dimensional Dirac oscillator as a specific example. We derive general expressions for its QND observables and find that they are intricate combinations of the position, momentum, and spin operators, which makes them challenging to realize experimentally in general. However, the situation is considerably simplified in both the weakly and strongly relativistic limits, where their experimental realization will be possible.
We revise the unireps. of $U(2,2)$ describing conformal particles with continuous mass spectrum from a many-body perspective, which shows massive conformal particles as compounds of two correlated massless particles. The statistics of the compound (boson/fermion) depends on the helicity $h$ of the massless components (integer/half-integer). Coherent states (CS) of particle-hole pairs ("excitons") are also explicitly constructed as the exponential action of exciton (non-canonical) creation operators on the ground state of unpaired particles. These CS are labeled by points $Z$ ($2\times 2$ compl…
We study synchronization of two dissipatively coupled Van der Pol oscillators in the quantum regime. Due to quantum noise strict frequency locking is absent and is replaced by a crossover from weak to strong frequency entrainment. We discuss the differences to the behavior of one quantum Van der Pol oscillator subject to an external drive. Moreover, we describe a possible experimental realization of two coupled quantum van der Pol oscillators in an optomechanical setting.
