We report the realization of an all-optical, tabletop effective-negative-mass oscillator (ENMO) scheme capable of canceling quantum noise when cascaded with an opto-mechanical sensor susceptible to (quantum) radiation pressure noise. Our coherent quantum noise cancellation (CQNC) scheme offers a broadband cancellation capability with a tunable, wavelength-flexible, and compact system. This is achieved through the implementation of an optical equivalent of an opto-mechanical interaction, facilitated by a down-conversion and a beam-splitting process. The intricate nature of the system and its multiple interacting components made characterizing the interdependent parameters with conventional methods ineffective, leading to the development of an in-situ characterization scheme. The obtained parameters meet the targets for CQNC set in previous studies. With our current realization, we project a broadband quantum noise reduction of 3.6 dB, corresponding to a 77% reduction in quantum back-action noise at the optimal frequency of maximum reduction, indicating the readiness of the ENMO for application. We discuss the prospects for new applications in quantum information and communication using the same platform.
We consider the simple model of measurement of mechanical oscillator position via Fabry-Pero cavity pumped by detuned laser (end mirror of cavity is mass of oscillator) in resolved sideband regime when laser is detuned from cavity's frequency by frequency of mechanical oscillator $\pmω_m$ and relaxation rate $γ$ of cavity is small: $γ\ll ω_m$. We demonstrate fluctuation back action cancellation in reflected wave. However, it does not allow to circumvent Standard Quantum Limit, the reason of it is the dynamic back action.
We propose and analyse a feasible experimental scheme for a quantum force sensor based on the elimination of back-action noise through coherent quantum noise cancellation (CQNC) in a hybrid atom-cavity optomechanical setup assisted with squeezed vacuum injection. The force detector, which allows for a continuous, broad-band detection of weak forces well below the standard quantum limit (SQL), is formed by a single optical cavity simultaneously coupled to a mechanical oscillator and to an ensemble of ultracold atoms. The latter acts as a negative-mass oscillator so that atomic noise cancels exa…
We propose a classical optical interferometry scheme that reproduces dispersion-insensitive Hong-Ou-Mandel interferograms. The interferometric scheme is derived from a systematic method based on the time-reversal symmetry of quantum mechanics. The scheme uses a time-reversed version of a Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer with pairs of orthogonally polarized input laser pulses. We experimentally demonstrate automatic dispersion cancellation using the interferometry. The results show that the interferometer can obtain high-visibility interferograms with high signal conversion efficiency.
We show that the ability to make direct measurements of momentum, in addition to the usual direct measurements of position, allows a simple configuration of two identical mechanical oscillators to be used for broadband back-action-free force metrology. This would eliminate the need for an optical reference oscillator in the scheme of Tsang and Caves [Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 123601 (2010)], along with its associated disadvantages. We also show that if one is restricted to position measurements alone then two copies of the same two-oscillator configuration can be used for narrow-band back-action-f…
Quantum back action imposes fundamental sensitivity limits to the majority of quantum measurements. The effect results from the unavoidable contamination of the measured parameter with the quantum noise of a meter. Back action evading measurements take advantage of the quantum correlations introduced by the system under study to the meter and allow overcoming the fundamental limitations. The measurements are frequently restricted in their bandwidth due to a finite response time of the system components. Here we show that probing a mechanical oscillator with a dichromatic field with frequencies…
Coherent quantum noise cancellation (CQNC) can be used in optomechanical sensors to surpass the standard quantum limit (SQL). In this paper, we investigate an optomechanical force sensor that uses the CQNC strategy by cascading the optomechanical system with an all-optical effective negative mass oscillator. Specifically, we analyze matching conditions, losses and compare the two possible arrangements in which either the optomechanical or the negative mass system couples first to light. While both of these orderings yield a sub-SQL performance, we find that placing the effective negative mass …
The generation of entanglement between disparate physical objects is a key ingredient in the field of quantum technologies, since they can have different functionalities in a quantum network. Here we propose and analyze a generic approach to steady-state entanglement generation between two oscillators with different temperatures and decoherence properties coupled in cascade to a common unidirectional light field. The scheme is based on a combination of coherent noise cancellation and dynamical cooling techniques for two oscillators with effective masses of opposite signs, such as quasi-spin an…
Although people have already artificially formed parity--time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry with gain and loss in a balanced manner, it is still a defect that the gain is restricted to semi--classical but not full quantum. Here we propose and analyze a theoretical scheme to realize full quantum oscillator $\mathcal{PT}$--symmetry. The quantum gain is provided by a dissipation optical cavity with blue detuned laser field. After adiabatically eliminating the cavity modes, we give an effective master equation, which is a more complete quantum description compared with non--Hermitian Hamiltonian, to r…
In this paper, we propose an experimentally viable scheme to enhance the sensitivity of force detection in a hybrid optomechanical setup assisted by squeezed vacuum injection, beyond the standard quantum limit (SQL). The scheme is based on a combination of the coherent quantum noise cancellation (CQNC) strategy with a variational homodyne detection of the cavity output spectrum in which the phase of the local oscillator is optimized. In CQNC, realizing a negative-mass oscillator in the system leads to exact cancellation of the backaction noise from the mechanics due to destructive quantum inte…
An optical realization of the damped quantum oscillator, based on transverse light dynamics in an optical resonator with slowly-moving mirrors, is theoretically suggested. The optical resonator setting provides a simple implementation of the time-dependent Caldirola-Kanai Hamiltonian of the dissipative quantum oscillator, and enables to visualize the effects of damped oscillations in the classical (ray optics) limit and wave packet collapse in the quantum (wave optics) regime.
We present the first experimental microwave realization of the one-dimensional Dirac oscillator, a paradigm in exactly solvable relativistic systems. The experiment relies on a relation of the Dirac oscillator to a corresponding tight-binding system. This tight-binding system is implemented as a microwave system by a chain of coupled dielectric disks, where the coupling is evanescent and can be adjusted appropriately. The resonances of the finite microwave system yields the spectrum of the one-dimensional Dirac oscillator with and without mass term. The flexibility of the experimental set-up a…
A theoretical scheme for the realization of the sphere-coherent motional states in an optomechanical cavity in the presence of a two-level atom is proposed. To this end, the analogy between an atom-assisted optomechanical cavity and a laser-driven trapped-ion system is used. This analogy provides us with a theoretical tool to show how sphere-coherent states can be generated for the motional degree of freedom of the macroscopic mechanical oscillator from atom-field-mirror interactions in a multi-mode optomechanical cavity. Some nonclassical properties of the generated state of the mechanical os…
Energy-time entangled biphoton source plays a great role in quantum communication, quantum metrology and quantum cryptography due to its strong temporal correlation and capability of nonlocal dispersion cancellation. As a quantum effect, nonlocal dispersion cancellation is further proposed as an alternative way for nonlocality test of continuous variable entanglement via the violation of Bell-like inequality proposed by Wasak et al. [Phys. Rev. A, 82, 052120 (2010)]. However, to date there is no experimental report either on the inequality violation or on a nonlocal detection with single-photo…
We report the experimental study of a harmonic oscillator in the relativistic regime. The oscillator is composed of Bose-condensed lithium atoms in the third band of an optical lattice, which have an energy-momentum relation nearly identical to that of a massive relativistic particle, with an effective mass reduced below the bare value and a greatly reduced effective speed of light. Imaging the shape of oscillator trajectories at velocities up to 98% of the effective speed of light reveals a crossover from sinusoidal to nearly photon-like propagation. The existence of a maximum velocity causes…
The purpose of this paper is to study the realization theory of quantum linear systems. It is shown that for a general quantum linear system its controllability and observability are equivalent and they can be checked by means of a simple matrix rank condition. Based on controllability and observability a specific realization is proposed for general quantum linear systems in which an uncontrollable and unobservable subspace is identified. When restricted to the passive case, it is found that a realization is minimal if and only if it is Hurwitz stable. Computational methods are proposed to fin…
We show that the elementary modes of the planar harmonic oscillator can be quantised in the framework of quantum mechanics based on pseudo-hermitian hamiltonians. These quantised modes are demonstrated to act as dynamical structures behind a new Jordan - Schwinger realization of the SU(1,1) algebra. This analysis complements the conventional Jordan - Schwinger construction of the SU(2) algebra based on hermitian hamiltonians of a doublet of oscillators.
We consider an electromechanical system where a microwave cavity is coupled to a mechanical resonator, with a mechanical frequency twice the microwave frequency. In this regime, the effective photon-phonon interaction is equivalent to that of a degenerate parametric amplifier, instead of the typical radiation pressure interaction. If the mechanical resonator is strongly driven, it undergoes a phase transition to a state where the energy pumped into the mechanical mode is entirely converted to the photonic mode. Quantum fluctuations smear this phase transition. We describe these effects with a …
Non-Gaussian continuous variable states play a central role both in the foundations of quantum theory and for emergent quantum technologies. In particular, "cat states", i.e., two-component macroscopic quantum superpositions, embody quantum coherence in an accessible way and can be harnessed for fundamental tests and quantum information tasks alike. Degenerate optical parametric oscillators can naturally produce single-mode cat states and thus represent a promising platform for their realization and harnessing. We show that a dissipative coupling between degenerate optical parametric oscillato…
In this paper various representations of the exceptional Lie algebra G_2 are investigated in a purely algebraic manner, and multi-boson/multi-fermion realizations are obtained. Matrix elements of the master representation, which is defined on the space of the universal enveloping algebra of G_2, are explicitly determined. From this master representation, different indecomposable representations defined on invariant subspaces or quotient spaces with respect to these invariant subspaces are discussed. Especially, the elementary representations of G_2 are investigated in detail, and the correspon…
Composite bosons, here called {\it quasibosons} (e.g. mesons, excitons, etc.), occur in various physical situations. Quasibosons differ from bosons or fermions as their creation and annihilation operators obey non-standard commutation relations, even for the "fermion+fermion" composites. Our aim is to realize the operator algebra of quasibosons composed of two fermions or two q-fermions (q-deformed fermions) by the respective operators of deformed oscillators, the widely studied objects. For this, the restrictions on quasiboson creation/annihilation operators and on the deformed oscillator (de…
Using ladder operators for the non-linear oscillator with position-dependent effective mass, realization of the dynamic group SU(1,1) is presented. Keeping in view the algebraic structure of the non-linear oscillator, coherent states are constructed using Barut-Girardello formalism and their basic properties are discussed. Furthermore, the statistical properties of these states are investigated by means of Mandel parameter and second order correlation function. Moreover, it is shown that in the harmonic limit, all the results obtained for the non-linear oscillator with spatially varying mass r…
Quantum information technologies harness the intrinsic nature of quantum theory to beat the limitations of the classical methods for information processing and communication. Recently, the application of quantum features to metrology has attracted much attention. Quantum optical coherence tomography (QOCT), which utilizes two-photon interference between entangled photon pairs, is a promising approach to overcome the problem with optical coherence tomography (OCT): As the resolution of OCT becomes higher, degradation of the resolution due to dispersion within the medium becomes more critical. H…
We study entanglement dynamics in dispersive optomechanical systems consisting of two optical modes and a mechanical oscillator inside an optical cavity. The two optical modes interact with the mechanical oscillator, but not directly with each other. The appearance of optical entanglement witnesses non-classicality of the oscillator. We study the dependence of the entanglement dynamics with the optomechanical coupling, the mean photon number in the cavity and the oscillator temperature. An experimental realization with ultracold atomic ensembles is proposed.
Quantum control of engineered mechanical oscillators can be achieved by coupling the oscillator to an auxiliary degree of freedom, provided that the coherent rate of energy exchange exceeds the decoherence rate of each of the two sub-systems. We achieve such quantum-coherent coupling between the mechanical and optical modes of a micro-optomechanical system. Simultaneously, the mechanical oscillator is cooled to an average occupancy of n = 1.7 \pm 0.1 motional quanta. Pulsed optical excitation reveals the exchange of energy between the optical light field and the micromechanical oscillator in t…
Phenomenological models aiming to join gravity and quantum mechanics often predict effects that are potentially measurable in refined low-energy experiments. For instance, modified commutation relations between position and momentum, that accounts for a minimal scale length, yield a dynamics that can be codified in additional Hamiltonian terms. When applied to the paradigmatic case of a mechanical oscillator, such terms, at the lowest order in the deformation parameter, introduce a weak intrinsic nonlinearity and, consequently, deviations from the classical trajectory. This point of view has s…
This work presents an exactly soluble scheme to address the problem of optimal transfer of quantum states through a set of $s$ harmonic oscillators composing a network with connected ends as a closed quantum circuit. For this purpose we start from a general quadratic Hamiltonian form. The relationship between the parameters of the Hamiltonian, the network size, and the time interval required for such transfer are explicitly shown. Particular physical realizations of this Hamiltonian, transfer of entangled states, including transfer of states at the expense of a quantum entanglement, are also c…
We report the experimental realization and characterization of one 60-mode copy, and of two 30-mode copies, of a dual-rail quantum-wire cluster state in the quantum optical frequency comb of a bimodally pumped optical parametric oscillator. This is the largest entangled system ever created whose subsystems are all available simultaneously. The entanglement proceeds from the coherent concatenation of a multitude of EPR pairs by a single beam splitter, a procedure which is also a building block for the realization of hypercubic-lattice cluster states for universal quantum computing.
Cavity optomechanics offers quantum cooling, quantum control and measurement of small mechanical oscillators. However the optical backactions that underpin quantum control can significantly disturb the oscillator modes: mechanical frequencies are shifted by the optical spring effect and light-matter hybridisation in strong coupling regimes; mechanical modes hybridise with each other via the cavity mode. This is even more pertinent in the field of levitated optomechanics, where optical trapping fully determines the mechanical modes and their frequencies. Here, using the coherent-scattering (CS)…
A new solution is proposed to the long-standing problem of describing the quantum phase of a harmonic oscillator. In terms of an'exponential phase operator', defined by a new 'polar decomposition' of the quantized amplitude of the oscillator, a regular phase operator is constructed in the Hilbert-Fock space as a strongly convergent power series. It is shown that the eigenstates of the new 'exponential operators are SU(1,1) coherent states in the Holstein-Primakoff realization. In terms of these eigenstates, the diagonal representation of phase densities and a generalized spectal resolution of …
Bilayer quantum Hall (BLQH) systems, which underlie a $U(4)$ symmetry, display unique quantum coherence effects. We study coherent states (CS) on the complex Grassmannian $\mathbb G_2^4=U(4)/U(2)^2$, orthonormal basis, $U(4)$ generators and their matrix elements in the reproducing kernel Hilbert space $\mathcal H_λ(\mathbb G_2^4)$ of analytic square-integrable holomorphic functions on $\mathbb G_2^4$, which carries a unitary irreducible representation of $U(4)$ with index $λ\in\mathbb N$. A many-body representation of the previous construction is introduced through an oscillator realization of…
Sagnac speed meter (SSM) topology is known as an alternative technique to reduce quantum back-action in gravitational-wave interferometers. However, any potential imbalance of the main beamsplitter was shown to reduce the quantum noise superiority of speed meter at low frequencies, caused due to increased laser noise coupling to the detection port. In this paper, we show that implementing balanced homodyne readout scheme and for a particular choice of the local oscillator (LO) delivery port, the excess laser noise contribution to quantum noise limited sensitivity (QNLS) is partly compensated a…
We study the synchronization of a van der Pol self-oscillator with Kerr anharmonicity to an external drive. We demonstrate that the anharmonic, discrete energy spectrum of the quantum oscillator leads to multiple resonances in both phase locking and frequency entrainment not present in the corresponding classical system. Strong driving close to these resonances leads to nonclassical steady-state Wigner distributions. Experimental realizations of these genuine quantum signatures can be implemented with current technology.
We investigate the feasibility of performing quantum non-demolition (QND) measurements in relativistic quantum systems, using the one-dimensional Dirac oscillator as a specific example. We derive general expressions for its QND observables and find that they are intricate combinations of the position, momentum, and spin operators, which makes them challenging to realize experimentally in general. However, the situation is considerably simplified in both the weakly and strongly relativistic limits, where their experimental realization will be possible.
We investigate a quantum mechanical harmonic oscillator based on the extended Snyder model. This realization of the Snyder model is constructed as a quantum phase space generated by $D$ spatial coordinates and $D(D-1)/2$ tensorial degrees of freedom, together with their conjugate momenta. The \coo obey nontrivial \cor and generate a noncommutative geometry, which admits nicer properties than the usual realization of the model, in particular giving rise to an associative star product. The spectrum of the harmonic oscillator is studied through the introduction of creation and annihilation operat…
We revise the unireps. of $U(2,2)$ describing conformal particles with continuous mass spectrum from a many-body perspective, which shows massive conformal particles as compounds of two correlated massless particles. The statistics of the compound (boson/fermion) depends on the helicity $h$ of the massless components (integer/half-integer). Coherent states (CS) of particle-hole pairs ("excitons") are also explicitly constructed as the exponential action of exciton (non-canonical) creation operators on the ground state of unpaired particles. These CS are labeled by points $Z$ ($2\times 2$ compl…
We study synchronization of two dissipatively coupled Van der Pol oscillators in the quantum regime. Due to quantum noise strict frequency locking is absent and is replaced by a crossover from weak to strong frequency entrainment. We discuss the differences to the behavior of one quantum Van der Pol oscillator subject to an external drive. Moreover, we describe a possible experimental realization of two coupled quantum van der Pol oscillators in an optomechanical setting.
We investigate the spectral and eigenstate properties of the quantum superexponential oscillator. Our focus is on the quantum signatures of the recently observed transition of the energy dependent period of the corresponding classical superexponential oscillator. We show that the ground state exhibits a remarkable metamorphosis of decentering, asymmetrical squeezing and the development of a tail. Analyzing the central moments up to high order a characteristic transition from exponentially decaying moments to increasing moments is unraveled. A corresponding spectral analysis shows that, surpris…
In this paper we propose a symmetric q-deformed Tamm-Dancoff (S-TD) oscillator algebra and study its representation, coordinate realization, and main properties. In particular, the non-Fibonacci (more exactly, quasi-Fibonacci) nature of S-TD oscillator is established, the possibility of relating it to certain p,q-deformed oscillator family shown, the occurrence of the pairwise accidental degeneracy proven. We also find the coherent state for the S-TD oscillator and show that it satisfies completeness relation. Main advantage of the S-TD model over usual Tamm-Dancoff oscillator is that due to (…
