We discuss the equivalence between light-front time-ordered-perturbation theory and covariant quantum field theory in light-front quantization, in the case of quantum electrodynamics at one-loop level. In particular, we review the one-loop calculation of the vertex correction, fermion self-energy and vacuum polarization. We apply the procedure of integration by residue over the light-front energy in the loop to show how the perturbative expansion in covariant terms can be reduced to a sum of propagating and instantaneous diagrams of light-front time-ordered perturbation theory. The detailed proof of equivalence between the two formulations of the theory resolves the controversial question on which form should be used for the gauge-field propagator in the light-cone gauge in the covariant approach.
We compare the use of the Coulomb gauge in finite temperature QED with a recently proposed prescription for covariant gauges, in which only the transverse photon degrees of freedom are thermalized. Using the Landau rule as a guide, we clarify the relation between the retarded electron self-energy and the elements of the self-energy matrix in the real-time formulation of . The general results are illustrated by means of the one-loop expressions for the electron self-energy in a QED plasma.
This work is the first check of gauge invariance for nonperturbative calculations in light-front QED. To quantize QED in an arbitrary covariant gauge, we use a light-front analog of the equal-time Stueckelberg quantization. Combined with a Pauli-Villars regularization, where massive, negative-metric photons and fermions are included in the Lagrangian, we are then able to construct the light-front QED Hamiltonian and the associated mass eigenvalue problem in a Fock-space representation. The formalism is applied to the dressed-electron state, with a Fock-space truncation to include at most one p…
The one loop vertex in QED is calculated in arbitrary covariant gauges as an analytic function of its momenta. The vertex is decomposed into a longitudinal part, that is fully responsible for ensuring the Ward and Ward-Takahashi identities are satisfied, and a transverse part. The transverse part is decomposed into 8 independent components each being separately free of kinematic singularities in $\bf any$ covariant gauge in a basis that modifies that proposed by Ball and Chiu. Analytic expressions for all 11 components of the ${O(α)}$ vertex are given explicitly in terms of elementary function…
We revisit the calculation of the width for the radiative decay of a $1^{+-}$ heavy $Q \bar Q$ meson via the channel $1^{+-} \to 0^{-+} +γ$ in the covariant light-front quark model. We carry out the reduction of the light-front amplitude in the non-relativistic limit, explicitly computing the leading and next-to-leading order relativistic corrections. This shows the consistency of the light-front approach with the non-relativistic formula for this electric dipole transition. Furthermore, the theoretical uncertainty in the predicted width is studied as a function of the inputs for the heavy qua…
We study the electromagnetic properties of a hot medium at temperatures below electron mass. It was observed earlier that the first order hot loop corrections do not affect the electromagnetic properties of hot media due to the absence of self-interaction of photons. However, the second order contributions are found to modify these properties due to the overlapping hot and cold loops. It has also been noticed that the hot loops have to be integrated before the cold ones to establish the order by order cancelation of singularities to ensure renormalizability of the theory. It is also explicitly…
We revisit the proof of equivalence of one loop expressions for fermion self-energy and vertex correction in light-front QED and Covariant QED at the Feynman diagram level and generalize, to all components, the proof of equivalence for the one loop vertex correction diagram which was presented earlier by us only for the $+$ component of $Λ^μ$. We demonstrate, in the general case also, that the equivalence cannot be established without the third term in the three-term photon propagator in light cone gauge.
We calculate the unpolarized QED Compton scattering cross section in a manifestly covariant way. Our approach allows a direct implementation of the specific kinematical cuts imposed in the experiments, {\it e. g.} HERA-H1. We compare the 'exact' cross section in terms of the structure functions $F_{1,2} (x_B,Q^2)$, assuming the Callan-Gross relation, with the one obtained using the equivalent photon approximation (EPA) as well as with the experimental results. We find that the agreement with the EPA is better in $x_γ$ bins, where $x_γ$ is the fraction of the longitudinal momentum of the proton…
An Abelian gauge theory with Chern-Simons term is investigated for a four-component Dirac fermion in 1+2 dimensions. The Ball-Chiu (BC) vertex function is employed to modify the rainbow-ladder approximation for the Schwinger-Dyson (SD) equation. We numerically solve the SD equation and show the gauge dependence for the resulting phase boundary for the parity and the chiral symmetry.
The explicit exact expressions of QED lowest-order radiative corrections to the two polarized identical fermion scattering are presented in covariant form. Polarization effects are treated in detail. The infrared divergence from the real photon emission is extracted by covariant approach. Some numerical results for Møller scattering are given.
We extend a previous Landau-gauge study of subtractive renormalization of the fermion propagator Dyson-Schwinger equation (DSE) in strong-coupling, quenched QED_4 to arbitrary covariant gauges. We use the fermion-photon proper vertex proposed by Curtis and Pennington with an additional correction term included to compensate for the small gauge-dependence induced by the ultraviolet regulator. We discuss the chiral limit and the onset of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in the presence of nonperturbative renormalization. We extract the critical coupling in several different gauges and find evi…
Invariant and covariant forms of the quark-antiquark interaction derived by the method of Eichten and Feinberg are considered. Relations between the various terms imposed by Lorentz transformation constraints, here called Gromes relations, are found to exist in neither case. Details of the Gromes relation proper are reconsidered and inconsistencies found that lead to a violation of covariance.
We apply the worldline formalism to amplitudes in scalar quantum electrodynamics (QED) involving open scalar lines, with an emphasis on their non-perturbative gauge dependence. At the tree-level, we study the scalar propagator interacting with any number of photons in configuration space as well as in momentum space. At one-loop we rederive, in an efficient way, the off-shell vertex in an arbitrary dimension and any covariant gauge. Generalizing the Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin transformation (LKFT) for the non-perturbative propagator, we find simple non-perturbative transformation rules for arb…
We derive a relation between four-fermion QED Green functions of different covariant gauges which defines the gauge dependence completely. We use the derived gauge dependence to check the gauge invariance of atom-like bound state calculations. We find that the existing QED procedure does not provide gauge invariant binding energies. A way to a corrected gauge invariant procedure is pointed out.
The gauge parameter dependence of QED in the covariant gauge can be determined explicitly by introducing a Stueckelberg field, which is a non-interacting fictitious Goldstone boson field. Examples of QED with electrons or charged scalars are discussed. Our results generalize the long known results on the gauge parameter dependence of the wave function renormalization constant and the electron propagator.

The fermion propagator in an arbitrary covariant gauge can be obtained from the Landau gauge result via a Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin transformation. This transformation can be written in a practically useful form in both configuration and momentum space. It is therefore possible to anticipate effects of a gauge transformation on the propagator's analytic properties. These facts enable one to establish that if a critical number of flavours for chiral symmetry restoration and deconfinement exists in noncompact QED3, then its value is independent of the gauge parameter. This is explicated using s…
2+1 dimensional massless scalar QED with $(ϕ^*ϕ)^3$ scalar self-coupling is modified by the addition of a non- minimal Chern-Simons term that couples the dual of the electromagnetic field strength to the covariant current of the complex scalar field. The theory is shown to be fully one- loop renormalizable. The one loop effective potential for the scalar field gives rise to spontaneous symmetry breaking which induces masses for both the scalar and vector fields. At high temperature there is a symmetry restoring phase transition.
In several preceding studies, the explicitly covariant formulation of light front dynamics was developed and applied to many observables. In the present study we show how in this approach the renormalization procedure for the first radiative correction can be carried out in a standard way, after separating out the contributions depending on the orientation of the light-front plane. We calculate the renormalized QED vertices $γe^-\to e^-$ and $e^+e^-\to γ$ and the electron self-energy and recover, in a straightforward way, the well known analytical results obtained in the Feynman approach.
We investigate dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in unquenched ${QED}_3$ using the coupled set of Dyson--Schwinger equations for the fermion and photon propagators. For the fermion-photon interaction we employ an ansatz which satisfies its Ward--Green--Takahashi identity. We present self-consistent analytical solutions in the infrared as well as numerical results for all momenta. In Landau gauge, we find a phase transition at a critical number of flavours of $N_f^{\mathrm crit} \approx 4$. In the chirally symmetric phase the infrared behaviour of the propagators is described by power laws wit…
We investigate the self-consistency and Lorentz covariance of the covariant light-front quark model~(CLF QM) via the matrix elements and form factors~(${\cal F}=g$, $a_{\pm}$ and $f$) of $P\to V$ transition. Two types of correspondence schemes between the manifest covariant Bethe-Salpeter approach and the light-front quark model are studied. We find that, for $a_{-}(q^2)$ and $f(q^2)$, the CLF results obtained via $\lbd=0$ and $\pm$ polarization states of vector meson within the traditional type-I correspondence scheme are inconsistent with each other; and moreover, the strict covariance of th…
The QED effective Lagrangian in the presence of an arbitrary constant electromagnetic background field at finite temperature is derived in the imaginary-time formalism to one-loop order. The boundary conditions in imaginary time reduce the set of gauge transformations of the background field, which allows for a further gauge invariant and puts restrictions on the choice of gauge. The additional invariant enters the effective action by a topological mechanism and can be identified with a chemical potential; it is furthermore related to Debye screening. In concordance with the real-time formalis…
A simple systematic method for calculating derivative expansions of the one-loop effective action is presented. This method is based on using symbols of operators and well known deformation quantization theory. To demonstrate its advantages we present several examples of application for scalar theory, Yang-Mills theory, and scalar electrodynamics. The superspace formulation of the method is considered for Kählerian and non-Kählerian quantum corrections for Wess-Zumino and for Heisenberg-Euler lagrangians in super QED models.
Assuming high temperature and taking subleading temperature dependence into account, gauge dependence of one-loop electron dispersion relation is investigated in massless QED at zero chemical potential. The analysis is carried out using a general linear covariant gauge. The equation governing the gauge dependence of the dispersion relation is obtained and used to prove that the dispersion relation is gauge independent in the limiting case of momenta much larger than $eT$. It is also shown that the effective mass is not influenced by the leading temperature dependence of the gauge dependent par…
We evaluate the analytic expression for the one-loop fermion-boson vertex in massless QED3 in an arbitrary covariant gauge. The result is written in terms of elementary functions of its momenta. The vertex is decomposed into a longitudinal part, that is fully responsible for ensuring the Ward and Ward-Takahashi identities are satisfied, and a transverse part. Following Ball and Chiu and Kızılersü {\it et. al.}, the transverse part is written in its most general form as a function of 4 independent vectors. We calculate the coefficients of each of these vectors. We also check the transversality …
We study the scattering of hard external particles in a heat bath in a real-time formalism for finite temperature QED. We investigate the distribution of the 4-momentum difference of initial and final hard particles in a fully covariant manner when the scale of the process, $Q$, is much larger than the temperature, $T$. Our computations are valid for all $T$ subject to this constraint. We exponentiate the leading infra-red term at one-loop order through a resummation of soft (thermal) photon emissions and absorptions. For $T>0$, we find that tensor structures arise which are not present at $T=…
The Markov-Yukawa Transversality Principle (MYTP) on a 2-body Bethe-Salpeter kernel is formulated on a covariant Null Plane (NP) to reconstruct the 4D BS wave function for 2 fermion quarks in terms of 3D entities that satisfy a 3D BSE. This result is the null-plane counterpart of a 3D-4D interconnection for the 2-body BS wave functions found earlier by imposing MYTP covariantly in the instantaneous rest frame (termed CIA) of the composite. This formulation yields a 3D BSE which is formally identical to its Covariant Instantaneity form, thus fully preserving its spectral results, while ensuring…
We argue that calculations in QED at finite temperature are more conveniently carried out in the Coulomb gauge, in which only the physical photon degrees of freedom play a rol and are thermalized. We derive the photon propagator in this gauge for real-time finite temperature calculations and show that the four-fermion static Coulomb interaction that appears in the Lagrangian can be accounted for by suitably modifying the photon propagator. The Feynman rules of the theory are written in a manifestly covariant form, although they depend on the velocity 4-vector $u_μ$ of the background medium. As…
We discuss a reformulation of QED in which matter and gauge fields are integrated out explicitly, resulting in a many-body Lorentz covariant theory of 0+1 dimensional worldlines describing super-pairs of spinning charges interacting through Lorentz forces. This provides a powerful, string inspired definition of amplitudes to all loop orders. In particular, one obtains a more general formulation of Wilson loops and lines, with exponentiated dynamical fields and spin precession contributions, and worldline contour averages exactly defined through first quantized path integrals. We discuss in det…
We study chiral symmetry breaking in quenched strong-coupling QED$_4$ in arbitrary covariant gauge within the Dyson-Schwinger equation formalism. A recently developed numerical renormalization program is fully implemented. Results are compared for three different fermion-photon proper vertex {\it Ansätze\/}: bare $γ^μ$, minimal Ball-Chiu, and Curtis-Pennington. The procedure is straightforward to implement and numerically stable. We discuss the chiral limit and observe that in this limit the renormalized axial current is conserved. A detailed study of residual gauge dependence due to the verte…
Covariant gauges lead to spurious, non-physical polarisation states of gauge bosons. In QED, the use of the Feynman gauge, $\sum_λ ε_μ^{(λ)}ε_ν^{(λ)\ast} = -η_{μν}$, is justified by the Ward identity which ensures that the contributions of non-physical polarisation states cancel in physical observables. In contrast, the same replacement can be applied only to a single external gauge boson in squared amplitudes of non-abelian gauge theories like QCD. In general, the use of this replacement requires to include external Faddeev-Popov ghosts. We present a pedagogical derivation of these ghost cont…
A covariant relativistic formalism for the electron-photon and nuclear dynamics is summarised making more accurate predictions in agreement with experiments for Compton scattering in shells with large electron binding energy. An exact solution for the Dirac equation for an electron in the nuclear Coulomb field is obtained, in order to write the relativistic dynamics for this QED process. This is a preparation for the calculation of the relativistic cross-section for Compton scattering on bound electrons; as a precision test for QED.
We revisit the previously unsolved problems of ensuring Lorentz invariance and non-perturbative unitarity in Lee-Wick theories. We base our discussion on an ultraviolet completion of QED by Lee-Wick ghost fields, which is argued to be asymptotically safe. We argue that as long as the state space is based upon a suitable choice of distributions of a type invented by Gel'fand and Shilov, the Lee-Wick ghosts can be eliminated while preserving Lorentz invariance to produce a unitary theory. The method for eliminating ghosts is in principle non-perturbatively well-defined, in contrast with some pre…
We consider the three fundamental one loop Feynman diagrams of QED viz. vertex correction, fermion self-energy and vacuum polarization in the light-front gauge and discuss the equivalence of their standard covariant expressions with the light-front expressions obtained using light-cone time-ordered Hamiltonian perturbation theory. Although this issue has been considered by us and others previously, our emphasis in this article is on addressing the ambiguity regarding the correct form of the gauge boson propagator to be used in the light-front gauge. We generalize our earlier results and show, …
The gauge-fixing parameter $ξ$ dependence of two-point gauge variant correlation functions is studied for QED and QCD. We show that, in three Euclidean dimensions, or for four-dimensional thermal gauge theories, the usual procedure of getting a general covariant gauge-fixing term by averaging over a class of covariant gauge-fixing conditions leads to a nontrivial gauge-fixing parameter dependence in gauge variant two-point correlation functions (e.g. fermion propagators). This nontrivial gauge-fixing parameter dependence modifies the large distance behavior of the two-point correlation functio…
We evaluate the fermion-photon vertex in QED at the one loop level in Hard Thermal Loop approximation and write it in covariant form. The complete vertex can be expanded in terms of 32 basis vectors. As is well known, the fermion-photon vertex and the fermion propagator are related through a Ward-Takahashi Identity (WTI). This relation splits the vertex into two parts: longitudinal (Gamma_L) and transverse (Gamma_T). Gamma_L is fixed by the WTI. The description of the longitudinal part consumes 8 of the basis vectors. The remaining piece Gamma_T is then written in terms of 24 spin amplitudes. …
The present talk consists of two parts. The first one is allocated for consideration of the dimension of bilocal meson fields for quark-antiquark meson systems, which have been so far treated as the bosonic fields independent of constituent quark flavors, in the covariant oscillator quark model. Revisiting the electromagnetic currents of quark-antiquark meson systems, we show that the bilocal meson fields should be bosonic for light-quark meson systems, while fermionic for heavy-light and heavy-heavy meson systems. In the second part we apply the effective electromagnetic interactions of meson…
We solved with a numerical procedure the HTL improved ladder DS equation for the retarded fermion self-energy function $Σ_R$ to study the spontaneous generation of fermion mass in thermal QCD/QED, and studied the gauge-dependence of the solution within a general covariant gauge where the gauge parameter $ξ$ is any constant number. With the numerical solutions thus obtained, we found the followings; i) The fermion wave function renormalization function $A(P)$ always deviates largely from unity even at the momentum where the mass is defined, thus the corresponding solutions explicitly contradict…
We study the effect of a refined electron-photon vertex on the dynamical breaking of chiral symmetry in reduced quantum electrodynamics. We construct an educated {\em ansatz} for this vertex which satisfies the required discrete symmetries under parity, time reversal and charge conjugation operations. Furthermore, it reproduces its asymptotic perturbative limit in the weak coupling regime and ensures the massless electron propagator is multiplicatively renormalizable in its leading logarithmic expansion. Employing this vertex {\em ansatz}, we solve the gap equation to compute dynamically gener…
As a test of the new light-front coupled-cluster method in a gauge theory, we apply it to the nonperturbative construction of the dressed-electron state in QED, for an arbitrary covariant gauge, and compute the electron's anomalous magnetic moment. The construction illustrates the spectator and Fock-sector independence of vertex and self-energy contributions and indicates resolution of the difficulties with uncanceled divergences that plague methods based on Fock-space truncation.
