A new concept of nonlinear focusing of colliding bunches, called Crab Waist (CW)collision scheme, has been proposed at LNF INFN. It has been successfully tested at the Italian lepton collider DAFNE in operational conditions providing luminosity for two different experimental detectors, SIDDHARTA and KLOE-2. Considering a high efficiency of the scheme for increasing collision luminosity and its relative simplicity for implementation several new collider projects have been proposed and are under development at present. These are the SuperKEKB B-factory ready to start commissioning in 2016 in Japan, the SuperC-Tau factory proposed in Novosibirsk and entered in the short list of Russian mega-science projects, the new 100-km electron-positron Future Circular Collider (FCC-ee) under design study at CERN and some others. In this paper we describe the CW collision scheme, discuss its advantages and report principal results achieved at the electron-positron Phi-factory DAFNE.
Numerical simulations have shown that the recently proposed "crab waist" scheme of beam-beam collisions can substantially boost the luminosity of existing and future electron-positron colliders. In this paper we describe the crab waist concept and discuss potential advantages that such a scheme can provide. We also present the results of beam-beam simulations for the two currently proposed projects based on the crab waist scheme: the DAFNE upgrade and the Super B-factory project.
Numerical simulations have shown that a recently proposed 'crabbed waist' scheme of beam-beam collisions can substantially increase the luminosity of a collider. In this paper we give a qualitative explanation why this scheme works. For this purpose we use simple geometrical considerations and analyze peculiar properties of vertical motion modulations by synchrotron and horizontal betatron oscillations. It is shown that in the 'crabbed waist' scheme these modulations, which are the main sources of beam-beam resonances excitation, are significantly suppressed. Some numerical examples demonstrat…
The Phi-factory DAFNE was upgraded in the second half of 2007 in order to implement a recently proposed scheme of crab waist collisions aimed at substantial luminosity increase. Commissioning of the modified collider started in November 2007. In this paper we briefly describe the crab waist collision concept and discuss in detail the DAFNE hardware upgrade and obtained experimental results.
After the successful completion of the SIDDHARTA experiment run with crab waist collisions, the electron- positron collider DAΦNE has started routine operations for the KLOE-2 detector. The new interaction region also exploits the crab waist collision scheme, but features certain complications including the experimental detector solenoid, compensating anti-solenoids, and tilted quadrupole magnets. We have performed simulations of the beam-beam collisions in the collider taking into account the real DAΦNE nonlinear lattice. In particular, we have evaluated the effect of crab waist sextupoles an…
We applied Frequency Map Analysis (FMA) - a method that is widely used to explore dynamics of Hamiltonian systems - to beam-beam effects study. The method turned out to be rather informative and illustrative in the case of a novel Crab Waist collision approach, when "crab" focusing of colliding beams results in significant suppression of betatron coupling resonances. Application of FMA provides visible information about all working resonances, their widths and locations in the planes of betatron tunes and betatron amplitudes, so the process of resonances suppression due to the beams crabbing i…
In high energy physics, the luminosity is one useful value to characterize the performance of a particle collider. To gain more available data, we need to maximize the luminosity in most collider experiments. With the discussions of tune shift involved the beam dynamics and a recently proposed "crabbed waist" scheme of beam-beam collisions, we present some qualitative analysis to increase the luminosity. In addition, beam-beam tune shifts and luminosities of $e^{+}e^{-}$, $pp$/$p\bar{p}$, and $μ^{+}μ^{-}$ colliders are discussed.
In order to achieve luminosities significantly higher than in existing machines, future storage-ring based colliders will need to operate in novel parameter regimes combining ultra-low emittance, large Piwinski angle and high bunch charge; implementation of techniques such as a "crab waist" will add further challenges. Understanding the beam-beam interaction in these situations will be essential for the design of future very high luminosity colliders. Recent developments in modeling tools for studying beam-beam effects, capable of investigating the relevant regimes, will be discussed and examp…
In this paper, we present the effects of linear transverse-longitudinal coupling on beam size at Interaction Point (IP) of a collider with local crab crossing scheme, when time dependent transverse deflection (crab kicks) and dispersive orbit intertwine near IP. The analytic propagation formula and the closed orbit form of the crab dispersion and momentum dispersion are derived. The non-zero momentum dispersion at crab cavities and the non-ideal phase from crab cavities to IP are detailed with the derived propagation formula to predict the beam size distortion at IP with or without the beam-be…
Crab cavities have been proposed for a wide number of accelerators and interest in crab cavities has recently increased after the successful operation of a pair of crab cavities in KEK-B. In particular crab cavities are required for both the ILC and CLIC linear colliders for bunch alignment. Consideration of bunch structure and size constraints favour a 3.9 GHz superconducting, multi-cell cavity as the solution for ILC, whilst bunch structure and beam-loading considerations suggest an X-band copper travelling wave structure for CLIC. These two cavity solutions are very different in design but …
In DAΦNE, the Frascati e+/e- collider, the crab waist collision scheme has been successfully implemented in 2008 and 2009. During the collision operations for Siddharta experiment, an unusual synchrotron damping effect has been observed. Indeed, with the longitudinal feedback switched off, the positron beam becomes unstable with beam currents in the order of 200-300 mA. The longitudinal instability is damped by bringing the positron beam in collision with a high current electron beam (~2A). Besides, we have observed a shift of \approx 600Hz in the residual synchrotron sidebands. Precise measur…
In DAFNE, the Frascati $e^+e^-$ collider operating since 1998, an innovative collision scheme, the crab waist, has been successfully implemented during the years 2008-09. During operations for the Siddharta experiment an unusual synchrotron oscillation damping effect induced by beam-beam collisions has been observed. Indeed, when the longitudinal feedback is off, the positron beam becomes unstable with currents above 200-300 mA due to coupled bunch instability. The longitudinal instability is damped by colliding the positron beam with a high current electron beam (of the order of 2 A). A shift…
In 2010 we celebrated 50 years since commissioning of the first particle storage ring ADA in Frascati (Italy) that also became the first electron-positron collider in 1964. After that date the particle colliders have increased their intensity, luminosity and energy by several orders of magnitude. Namely, because of the high stored beam currents and high rate of useful physics events (luminosity) the modern electron-positron colliders are called "factories". However, the fundamental physics has required luminosities by 1-2 orders of magnitudes higher with respect to those presently achieved. Th…
Beam collisions with a crossing angle at the interaction point have been applied in high intensity colliders to reduce the effects of parasitic collisions which induce emittance growth and beam lifetime deterioration. The crossing angle causes the geometrical reduction of the luminosity. Crab cavity can be one of the most promising ways to compensate the crossing angle and to realize effective head-on collisions. Moreover, the crab crossing mitigates the synchro-betatron resonances due to the crossing angle. Crab cavity experiment in SPS is proposed for deciding on a full crab-cavity implement…
Since several years the DAFNE Team has been discussing ideas and performing experimental activities aimed at the collider luminosity increase. In this paper we briefly describe the proposed ideas and discuss results of the most relevant beam dynamics experimental studies that have been carried at DAFNE. We also introduce the concept of crab waist collisions that is the base of the undergoing DAFNE upgrade.
Crab crossing scheme is an essential collision scheme to achieve high luminosity for the future colliders with large crossing angles. However, when bunch length of one or both colliding beams is comparable with the wavelength of the crab cavity voltage, the nonlinear dependence of the crabbing kick may present a challenge to the beam dynamics of the colliding beams and impact the beam quality as well as the luminosity lifetime. In this paper, the results of nonlinear dynamics in the crab crossing scheme are presented, using both analytical and numerical studies. The result indicates that highe…
Recently proposed novel idea of "crabbed waist" beam-beam collisions will be tested at DAFNE during the collider run for the Siddharta experiment. In order to achieve the goal luminosity, large dynamic aperture is a matter of primary importance. A new method of a dynamic aperture optimization based on step-by-step chromaticity compensation with choosing the "best" sextupole pair at each step was applied to the DAFNE upgrade lattice. Several tune points were considered taking into account both high luminosity and large dynamic aperture. Algorithm and results of optimization will be presented.
DAFNE, the Frascati F-factory, has recently completed experimental runs for the three main detectors, KLOE, FINUDA and DEAR achieving 1.6x10E+32 cm-2s-1 peak and 10 pb-1 daily integrated luminosities. Improving these results by a significant factor requires changing the collision scheme. For this reason, in view of the SIDDHARTA detector installation, relevant modifications of the machine have been realized, aimed at implementing a new collision scheme based on a large Piwinski angle and crab-waist, together with several other hardware modifications involving injection kickers, bellows and bea…

One of the main advantages of proposed by P. Raimondi "Crab Waist" collision scheme is a strong suppression of betatron resonances excited by beam-beam interaction. Some qualitative explanations with numerical examples, describing beam-beam resonances for different collision schemes, were given in arXiv:physics/0702033. This paper can be considered as an "appendix" (additional illustration) to that one. We performed a number of full 2D betatron tune scans (beam-beam simulations) for different collision schemes, so one can easily see how the beam-beam resonances appear and disappear, depending …
A novel design of superconducting Crab Cavity was proposed and designed at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The new cavity shape is a Double Quarter Wave or DQWCC. After fabrication and surface treatments, the niobium proof-of-principle cavity was cryogenically tested in a vertical cryostat. The cavity is extremely compact yet has a low frequency of 400 MHz, an essential property for service for the Large Hadron Collider luminosity upgrade. The electromagnetic properties of the cavity are also well matched for this demanding task. The demonstrated deflecting voltage of 4.6 MV is well above the …
The Frascati Phi-factory DAFNE has successfully completed experimental runs for the three main detectors, KLOE, FINUDA and DEAR. The best peak luminosity achieved so far is 1.6x10^32 cm-2s-1, while the best daily integrated luminosity is 10 pb-1. At present the DAFNE team is preparing an upgrade of the collider based on the novel crab waist collision scheme. The upgrade is aimed at pushing the luminosity towards 10^33 cm-2s-1. In this paper we describe present collider performance and discuss ongoing preparatory work for the upgrade.
A beam optics scheme has been designed for the Future Circular Collider-e+e- (FCC-ee). The main characteristics of the design are: beam energy 45 to 175 GeV, 100 km circumference with two interaction points (IPs) per ring, horizontal crossing angle of 30 mrad at the IP and the crab-waist scheme [1] with local chromaticity correction. The crab-waist scheme is implemented within the local chromaticity correction system without additional sextupoles, by reducing the strength of one of the two sextupoles for vertical chromatic correction at each side of the IP. So-called "tapering" of the magnets …
A Super Flavour Factory, to be built in the Tor Vergata University campus near Frascati, Italy, will have nano-beams in order to reach a design luminosity two orders of magnitude higher than the present state of the art. The knowledge and compensation of the vibrations induced on the beams by the anthropic noise is then fundamental. The Daphne Phi-factory at LNF, Frascati, was upgraded in the second half of 2007 in order to implement the large Piwinski angle and crab waist collision scheme [1] and in 2010 the KLOE experiment was rolled in for a new data taking and physic program [2]. A vibrati…
HL-LHC federates the efforts and R&D of a large international community towards the ambitious HL- LHC objectives and contributes to establishing the European Research Area (ERA) as a focal point of global research cooperation and a leader in frontier knowledge and technologies. HL-LHC relies on strong participation from various partners, in particular from leading US and Japanese laboratories. This participation will be required for the execution of the construction phase as a global project. In particular, the US LHC Accelerator R&D Program (LARP) has developed some of the key technologies fo…
The efficiency of colliders for physics is largely determined by their luminosity, while most of the energy consumed by high-energy $e^+e^-$ colliders is proportional to the total beam current. Thus, the energy efficiency is mainly determined by the specific luminosity that needs to be maximized. One of the most effective ways to achieve this is by using the Crab waist collision scheme, which implies a large Piwinski angle (LPA). A distinctive feature of the FCC-ee is the great influence of beamstrahlung (radiation in the field of an opposite bunch) on beam dynamics. At low energies, this mani…
The role of beamstrahlung in high-energy e+e- storage-ring colliders (SRCs) is examined. Particle loss due to the emission of single energetic beamstrahlung photons is shown to impose a fundamental limit on SRC luminosities at energies 2E_0 >~ 140 GeV for head-on collisions and 2E_0 >~ 40 GeV for crab-waist collisions. With beamstrahlung taken into account, we explore the viability of SRCs in the E_0=240-500 GeV range, which is of interest in the precision study of the Higgs boson. At 2E_0=240 GeV, SRCs are found to be competitive with linear colliders; however, at 2E_0=400-500 GeV, the attain…
Particle loss due to the emission of single energetic beamstrahlung photons in beam collisions is shown to impose a fundamental limit on storage-ring luminosities at energies greater than 2E~140 GeV for head-on collisions and 2E~40 GeV for crab-waist collisions. Above these threshold energies, the suppression factor due to beamstrahlung scales as 1/E^{4/3}, and for a fixed power of synchrotron radiation, the luminosity L is proportional to R/E^{13/3}, where R is the collider radius. For 2E > 150 GeV, both collision schemes have similar luminosity limits. The luminosities attainable at storage-…
The SuperB international team continues to optimize the design of an electron-positron collider, which will allow the enhanced study of the origins of flavor physics. The project combines the best features of a linear collider (high single-collision luminosity) and a storage-ring collider (high repetition rate), bringing together all accelerator physics aspects to make a very high luminosity of 10$^{36}$ cm$^{-2}$ sec$^{-1}$. This asymmetric-energy collider with a polarized electron beam will produce hundreds of millions of B-mesons at the $Υ$(4S) resonance. The present design is based on extr…
The international Future Circular Collider (FCC) study aims at a design of $pp$, $e^+e^-$, $ep$ colliders to be built in a new 100 km tunnel in the Geneva region. The $e^+e^-$ collider (FCC-ee) has a centre of mass energy range between 90 (Z-pole) and 375 GeV (tt_bar). To reach such unprecedented energies and luminosities, the design of the interaction region is crucial. The crab-waist collision scheme has been chosen for the design and it will be compatible with all beam energies. In this paper we will describe the machine detector interface layout including the solenoid compensation scheme. …
Recently the peak luminosity achieved on the DAΦNE collider has been improved by almost a factor three by implementing a novel collision scheme based on large Piwinski angle and Crab-Waist. This encouraging result opened new perspectives for physics research and a new run with the KLOE-2 detector has been scheduled to start by spring 2010. The KLOE-2 installation is a complex operation requiring a careful design effort and a several months long shutdown. The high luminosity interaction region has been deeply revised in order to take into account the effect on the beam caused by the solenoidal …
