Since several years the DAFNE Team has been discussing ideas and performing experimental activities aimed at the collider luminosity increase. In this paper we briefly describe the proposed ideas and discuss results of the most relevant beam dynamics experimental studies that have been carried at DAFNE. We also introduce the concept of crab waist collisions that is the base of the undergoing DAFNE upgrade.
DAFNE is the electron-positron collider operating at the energy of Phi-resonance, 1 GeV in the center of mass. The presently achieved luminosity is by about two orders of magnitude higher than that obtained at other colliders ever operated at this energy. Careful beam dynamic studies such as the vacuum chamber design with low beam coupling impedance, suppression of different kinds of beam instabilities, investigation of beam-beam interaction, optimization of the beam nonlinear motion have been the key ingredients that have helped to reach this impressive result. Many novel ideas in accelerator…
The aim of this paper is to overview the energy ramping main issues for DAFNE-2, the high-energy upgrade of the Frascati e+e- DAFNE collider in order to understand the feasibility of the process itself and to define the tools to be developed for its implementation.
The energy doubling of the Frascati DAFNE Phi-factory can be accomplished either by ramping the energy of the rings from the initial 510 MeV of the injected beam or by upgrading the present Linac Energy to > 1.02 GeV so to inject the beam at full energy. The choice between the two options is not the goal of this paper, that instead, presents some technical solutions, allowing to re-use all the components of the DAFNE electron-positron Linac.
Presently clearing electrodes are being considered as a possible cure of e-cloud driven problems in existing and future colliders. 'Invisible' electrodes, made of a thin highly resistive layer pasted on a dielectric plate, have been proposed as one of design solutions for the e-cloud clearing. For the first time such electrodes were successfully used in the electron-positron accumulator (EPA) of LEP. Similar electrodes had been using for a long time for ion clearing purposes in the DAFNE electron ring. Theoretical considerations and experimental measurements at DAFNE have revealed a substantia…
Recently proposed novel idea of "crabbed waist" beam-beam collisions will be tested at DAFNE during the collider run for the Siddharta experiment. In order to achieve the goal luminosity, large dynamic aperture is a matter of primary importance. A new method of a dynamic aperture optimization based on step-by-step chromaticity compensation with choosing the "best" sextupole pair at each step was applied to the DAFNE upgrade lattice. Several tune points were considered taking into account both high luminosity and large dynamic aperture. Algorithm and results of optimization will be presented.
Long-range beam-beam interactions (parasitic crossings) are one of the main luminosity performance limitations for the Frascati e+e- Phi-factory DAFNE. In particular, the parasitic crossings lead to a substantial lifetime reduction of both beams in collision. This puts a limit on the maximum storable current and, as a consequence, on the achievable peak and integrated luminosity. In order to alleviate the problem numerical and experimental studies of the parasitic crossings compensation with current-carrying wires have been performed at DAFNE. Two such wires have been installed at both ends of…
High luminosity in DAFNE needs very high electron and positron currents stored. A full energy (510 MeV) injection system composed by a full energy electron and positron linac and an accumulator-damping ring is presently used. The electron and positron beams, alternatively accelerated by the linac, are injected and stacked in the accumulator with high efficiency thanks to its large acceptance and short damping time. The damped beams are extracted and transferred to the main ring through a long transfer line that has been built inside already existing buildings. The refill time of the collider i…
This project proposes to reuse the DAFNE accelerator complex for producing a high intensity (up to 10^10), high-quality beam of high-energy (up to 500 MeV) positrons for HEP experiments, mainly - but not only - motivated by light dark particles searches. Such a facility would provide a unique source of ultra-relativistic, narrow-band and low-emittance positrons, with a high duty factor, without employing a cold technology, that would be an ideal facility for exploring the existence of light dark matter particles, produced in positron-on-target annihilations into a photon+missing mass, and usin…
The positron beam in the DAFNE e+/e- collider has always been suffering from strong e-cloud instabilities. In order to cope with them, several approaches have been adopted along the years: flexible and powerful bunch-by-bunch feedback systems, solenoids around the straight sections of the vacuum chamber and, in the last runs, e-cloud clearing electrodes inside the bending and wiggler magnets. Of course classic diagnostics tools have been used to evaluate the effectiveness of the adopted measures and the correct setup of the devices, in order to acquire total beam and bunch-by-bunch currents, t…
During the current run of an electron-positron collider DAFNE special electrodes for electron cloud suppression have been inserted in all dipole and wiggler magnets of the positron ring. In this paper we discuss the impact of these electrodes on beam dynamics and overall collider performance. In particular we report results of measurements such as e-cloud instabilities growth rate, transverse beam size variation, tune shifts along the bunch train etc. with the electrodes switched on and off that clearly indicate the effectiveness of the electrodes for e-cloud suppression.
Bunch-by-bunch longitudinal diagnostics is a key issue of modern accelerators. To face up this challenging demand, tests of mid-IR compact uncooled photoconductive HgCdTe detectors have been recently performed at DAFNE. Different devices were used to monitor the emission of e- bunches. The first experiments allowed recording of 2.7 ns long e- bunches with a FWHM of a single pulse of about 600 ps. These results address the possibility to improve diagnostics at DAFNE and to this purpose an exit port on a bending magnet of the positron ring has been set-up. An HV chamber, hosting a gold-coated pl…
Long-range beam-beam interactions (parasitic crossings) were one of the main luminosity performance limitations for the lepton F-factory DAFNE in its original configuration. In particular, the parasitic crossings led to a substantial lifetime reduction of both beams in collision. This puts a limit on the maximum storable current and, as a consequence, on the achievable peak and integrated luminosity. In order to mitigate the problem, numerical and experimental studies of the parasitic crossings compensation by current-carrying wires have been done. During the operation for the KLOE experiment …
DAFNE, the Frascati F-factory, has recently completed experimental runs for the three main detectors, KLOE, FINUDA and DEAR achieving 1.6x10E+32 cm-2s-1 peak and 10 pb-1 daily integrated luminosities. Improving these results by a significant factor requires changing the collision scheme. For this reason, in view of the SIDDHARTA detector installation, relevant modifications of the machine have been realized, aimed at implementing a new collision scheme based on a large Piwinski angle and crab-waist, together with several other hardware modifications involving injection kickers, bellows and bea…
The idea of using fixed-target annihilations of a high-energy positron beam on a target for producing a new, very feebly interacting particle has been exploited by the PADME experiment at LNF using the extracted beam from the LINAC in the BTF facility. Extracting the beam from a synchrotron would improve by several orders of magnitude the duty-cycle of the LINAC, thus greatly extending the physics reach of such experiments. The option of substituting or complementing the standard, slow 1/3 of integer resonant extraction technique by using coherent phenomena in a bent crystal, like the channeli…
The SHERPA project aim is to develop an efficient technique to extract a positron beam from one of the accelerator rings composing the DAFNE complex at the Frascati National Laboratory of INFN, setting up a new beam line able to deliver positron spills of O(ms) length, excellent beam energy spread and emittance. The most common approach to slowly extract from a ring is to increase betatron oscillations approaching a tune resonance in order to gradually eject particles from the circulating beam. SHERPA proposes a paradigm change using coherent processes in bent crystals to kick out positrons fr…
In DAFNE, the Frascati $e^+e^-$ collider operating since 1998, an innovative collision scheme, the crab waist, has been successfully implemented during the years 2008-09. During operations for the Siddharta experiment an unusual synchrotron oscillation damping effect induced by beam-beam collisions has been observed. Indeed, when the longitudinal feedback is off, the positron beam becomes unstable with currents above 200-300 mA due to coupled bunch instability. The longitudinal instability is damped by colliding the positron beam with a high current electron beam (of the order of 2 A). A shift…
For almost a quarter of a century the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider was the centrepiece of the world's high-energy physics program, from the start of operation in December 1985 until it was overtaken by the LHC in 2011. The initial design luminosity of the Tevatron was 1030 cm-2 s-1; however, as a result of two decades of upgrades, the accelerator has been able to deliver 430-times higher luminosities to each of two high-luminosity experiments, Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) and D0. On the way to record high luminosities, many issues related to the electromagnetic beam-beam interact…
The initial demonstrations over the last several years of the use of optical diffraction radiation (ODR) as non-intercepting electron-beam-parameter monitors are reviewed. Developments in both far-field imaging and near-field imaging are addressed for ODR generated by a metal plane with a slit aperture, a single metal plane, and two-plane interferences. Polarization effects and sensitivities to beam size, divergence, and position will be discussed as well as a proposed path towards monitoring 10-micron beam sizes at 25 GeV.
Beam injection and extraction from a plasma module is still one of the crucial aspects to solve in order to produce high quality electron beams with a plasma accelerator. Proper matching conditions require to focus the incoming high brightness beam down to few microns size and to capture a high divergent beam at the exit without loss of beam quality. Plasma-based lenses have proven to provide focusing gradients of the order of kT/m with radially symmetric focusing thus promising compact and affordable alternative to permanent magnets in the design of transport lines. In this paper an overview …
The Long Baseline Neutrino Experiment (LBNE) will utilize a neutrino beamline facility located at Fermilab. The facility is designed to aim a beam of neutrinos toward a detector placed at the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) in South Dakota. The neutrinos are produced in a three-step process. First, protons from the Main Injector hit a solid target and produce mesons. Then, the charged mesons are focused by a set of focusing horns into the decay pipe, towards the far detector. Finally, the mesons that enter the decay pipe decay into neutrinos. The parameters of the f…
This lecture gives an overview about beam diagnostics techniques for the characterization of electron bunches obtained with plasma accelerators. Due to the limited space, the lecture does not aim to go into the specifics of the single measurements but rather to offer an overview of the present techniques (including ongoing developments) highlighting advantages and disadvantages of each of them. The linked references provide on the other side a more in depth discussion about the technical aspects.
Imaging systems have been an integral part of many beam monitors since the early days of accelerator diagnostics. The main application remains the observation of scintillating screens during commissioning, alignment and routine operation with the beam. Recorded images are often further analyzed to characterize the beam distribution for machine optimization. This report provides an overview of imaging technologies and market trends of today. The image sensor, like TV tubes and solid state sensors (CCD, CMOS and CID), with particular focus on the aspects important for beam instrumentation will b…
The accelerator for the APT Project is a 100 mA CW proton linac with an output energy of 1030 MeV. A High Energy Beam Transport (HEBT) conveys the beam to a raster expander, that provides a large rectangular distribution at a target/blanket (T/B) assembly. Spallation neutrons generated by the proton beam in the T/B reacts with Helium-3 to produce tritium. The design of the APT linac is an integrated normal-conducting (NC)/superconducting (SC) proton linac; the machine architecture has been discussed elsewhere [1]. The NC linac consists of a 75 keV injector, a 6.7-MeV 350-MHz RFQ (radio frequen…
The world Heavy Ion Fusion (HIF) Program for inertial fusion energy is looking toward the development and commissioning of several new experiments. Recent and planned upgrades of the facilities at GSI, in Russia, and in Japan greatly enhance the ability to study energy deposition in hot dense matter. Worldwide target design developments have focused on non-ignition targets for nearterm experiments and designs which, while lowering the energy required for ignition, tighten accelerator requirements. The U.S program is transitioning between scaled beam dynamics experiments and high current experi…
The generation of the ultra-bright beams required by modern accelerators and drivers of free-electron lasers (FELs) has generally relied on chicane-based bunch compressions that often result in the microbunching instability. Following compression, spectral enhancements extend even into the visible wavelengths through the longitudinal space charge (LSC) impedances. Optical transition radiation (OTR) screens have been extensively used for transverse electron beam size measurements for the bright beams, but the presence of such longitudinal microstructures (microbunching) in the electron beam or …

The accelerator systems are designed to deliver a 695 ns proton-pulse onto a mercury target at a 60-Hz repetition rate and an average power of 2-MW. Neutron moderators that will convert the spallation neutrons into slow neutrons for material science re…
Fundamental questions on the nature of matter and energy have found answers thanks to the use of particle accelerators. Societal applications, such as cancer treatment or cancer imaging, illustrate the impact of accelerators in our current life. Today, accelerators use metallic cavities that sustain electricfields with values limited to about 100 MV/m. Because of their ability to support extreme accelerating gradients, the plasma medium has recently been proposed for future cavity-like accelerating structures. This contribution highlights the tremendous evolution of plasma accelerators driven …
Beam diagnostics and instrumentation are an essential part of any kind of accelerator. There is a large variety of parameters to be measured for observation of particle beams with the precision required to tune, operate, and improve the machine. In the first part, the basic mechanisms of information transfer from the beam particles to the detector are described in order to derive suitable performance characteristics for the beam properties. However, depending on the type of accelerator, for the same parameter, the working principle of a monitor may strongly differ, and related to it also the r…
Discharge capillary-based active plasma lenses are a promising new technology for strongly focusing charged particle beams, especially when combined with novel high gradient acceleration methods. Still, many questions remain concerning such lenses, including their transverse field uniformity, limitations due to plasma wakefields and whether they can be combined in multi-lens lattices in a way to cancel chromaticity. These questions will be addressed in a new plasma lens experiment at the CLEAR User Facility at CERN. All the subsystems have been constructed, tested and integrated into the CLEAR…
An overview of various typical instruments used for high-intensity hadron beams is given. In addition, a few important diagnostic methods are discussed which are quite special for these kinds of beams.
Cornell's electron/positron storage ring (CESR) was modified over a series of accelerator shutdowns beginning in May 2008, which substantially improves its capability for research and development for particle accelerators. CESR's energy span from 1.8 to 5.6 GeV with both electrons and positrons makes it ideal for the study of a wide spectrum of accelerator physics issues and instrumentation related to present light sources and future lepton damping rings. Additionally a number of these are also relevant for the beam physics of proton accelerators. This paper outlines the motivation, design and…

Studies of the electron beam dynamics for the 4GLS design are presented. 4GLS will provide three different electron bunch trains to a variety of user synchrotron sources. The 1 kHz XUV-FEL and 100 mA High Average Current branches share a common 540 MeV linac, whilst the 13 MHz IR-FEL must be well-synchronised to them. An overview of the injector designs, electron transport, and energy recovery is given, including ongoing studies of coherent synchrotron radiation, beam break-up and wakefields. This work is being pursued for the forthcoming Technical Design Report due in 2008.
Since the beginning of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) commissioning, spectral components at harmonics of the mains frequency (50 Hz) have been observed in the transverse beam spectrum. This paper presents an overview of the most important observations, collected during the latest physics operation of the LHC in 2018, which clearly indicates that the harmonics are the result of a real beam excitation rather than an instrumental feature. Based on these findings, potential sources of the perturbation are discussed and a correlation with power supply ripple originating from the magnets' power sup…
We give an overview of our current/future analytical and numerical work on the spin polarization in high-energy electron storage rings. Our goal is to study the possibility of polarization for the CEPC and FCC-ee. Our work is based on the so-called Bloch equation for the polarization density introduced by Derbenev and Kondratenko in 1975. We also give an outline of the standard approach, the latter being based on the Derbenev-Kondratenko formulas.
The Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) and associated experimental equipment at Jefferson Lab comprise a unique facility for experimental nuclear physics. This facility is presently being upgraded, which will enable a new experimental program with substantial discovery potential to address important topics in nuclear, hadronic, and electroweak physics. Further in the future, it is envisioned that the Laboratory will evolve into an electron-ion colliding beam facility.
An overview of beam-gas interactions in particle accelerators is presented. The paper is focused on a few examples and tries to present basic concepts with simple formulae that should allow the reader to perform order-of-magnitude estimates of beam-gas rates.
Over the last years, the generation and acceleration of ultra-short, high quality electron beams has attracted more and more interest in accelerator science. Electron bunches with these properties are necessary to operate and test novel diagnostics and advanced high gradient accelerating schemes such as plasma accelerators or dielectric laser accelerators. Furthermore, several medical and industrial applications require high-brightness electron beams. The dedicated R&D facility ARES at DESY will provide such probe beams in the upcoming years. After the setup of the normal-conducting RF photoin…
The paper gives an overview of the particle dynamics in synchrotrons and storage rings. Both, transverse as well as the longitudinal plane are described in linear approximation. The main emphasis is to give an introduction into the basic concepts and to allow the reader to deduce the main parameters of the machine, based on some simple scaling laws.
