During the current run of an electron-positron collider DAFNE special electrodes for electron cloud suppression have been inserted in all dipole and wiggler magnets of the positron ring. In this paper we discuss the impact of these electrodes on beam dynamics and overall collider performance. In particular we report results of measurements such as e-cloud instabilities growth rate, transverse beam size variation, tune shifts along the bunch train etc. with the electrodes switched on and off that clearly indicate the effectiveness of the electrodes for e-cloud suppression.

Presently clearing electrodes are being considered as a possible cure of e-cloud driven problems in existing and future colliders. The positron beam in the DAFNE e+/e- collider has always been suffering from strong e-cloud instabilities. Investigation on the Ion Motion towards Clearing Electrodes in High-Brightness Electron Accelerators

High-brightness electron beams provided by modern accelerators require several measures to preserve their high quality and to avoid instabilities. Detection and clearing of trapped ions in the high current Cornell photoinjector

We have recently performed experiments to test the effectiveness of three ion-clearing strategies in the Cornell high intensity photoinjector: DC clearing electrodes, bunch gaps, and beam shaking. The photoinjector reaches a new regime of linac beam parameters where high CW beam currents lead to ion trapping. Therefore ion mitigation strategies must be evaluated for this machine and other similar future high current linacs. Equilibrium ion distribution in the presence of clearing electrodes and its influence on electron dynamics

Here we compute the ion distribution produced by an electron beam when ion-clearing electrodes are installed. This ion density is established as an equilibrium between gas ionization and ion clearing. The transverse ion distributions are shown to strongly peak in the beam's center, producing very nonlinear forces on the electron beam. We will analyze perturbations to the beam properties by these nonlinear fields. To obtain reasonable simulation speeds, we develop fast algorithms that take advantage of adiabatic invariants and scaling properties of Maxwell's equations and the Lorentz force. Our…

Measurements of Electron Cloud Growth and Mitigation in Dipole, Quadrupole, and Wiggler Magnets

Retarding field analyzers (RFAs), which provide a localized measurement of the electron cloud, have been installed throughout the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR), in different magnetic field environments. This paper describes the RFA designs developed for dipole, quadrupole, and wiggler field regions, and provides an overview of measurements made in each environment. The effectiveness of electron cloud mitigations, including coatings, grooves, and clearing electrodes, are assessed with the RFA measurements.
