We present a Mass-Luminosity Relation (MLR) for red dwarfs spanning a range of masses from 0.62 Msun to the end of the stellar main sequence at 0.08 Msun. The relation is based on 47 stars for which dynamical masses have been determined, primarily using astrometric data from Fine Guidance Sensors (FGS) 3 and 1r, white-light interferometers on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), and radial velocity data from McDonald Observatory. For our HST/FGS sample of 15 binaries component mass errors range from 0.4% to 4.0% with a median error of 1.8%. With these and masses from other sources, we construct a V-band MLR for the lower main sequence with 47 stars, and a K-band MLR with 45 stars with fit residuals half of those of the V-band.
We use GJ 831 AB as an analysis example, obtaining an absolute trigonometric parallax, pi_abs = 125.3 +/- 0.3 milliseconds of arc, with orbital elements yielding MA = 0.270 +/- 0.004 Msun and MB = 0.145 +/- 0.002 Msun. The mass precision rivals that derived for eclipsing binaries.
A remaining major task is the interpretation of the intrinsic cosmic scatter in the observed MLR for low mass stars in terms of physical effects. In the meantime, useful mass values can be estimated from the MLR for the ubiquitous red dwarfs that account for 75% of all stars, with applications ranging from the characterization of exoplanet host stars to the contribution of red dwarfs to the mass of the Universe.
We present 160 new trigonometric parallaxes for 151 M dwarf systems from the REsearch Consortium On Nearby Stars (RECONS) group's long-term astrometry/photometry program at the CTIO/SMARTS 0.9m telescope. Most systems (124 or 82%) are found to lie within 25 pc. The stars have 119 mas/yr < mu < 828 mas/yr and 3.85 < (V-K) < 8.47. Among these are 58 systems from the SuperCOSMOS-RECONS (SCR) search, discovered via our proper motion trawls of the SuperCOSMOS digitized archival photographic plates, while the remaining stars were suspected via photometric distance estimates to lie nearby. Sixteen ar…
We present an analysis of the most massive white dwarf candidates in the Montreal White Dwarf Database 100 pc sample. We identify 25 objects that would be more massive than $1.3~M_{\odot}$ if they had pure H atmospheres and CO cores, including two outliers with unusually high photometric mass estimates near the Chandrasekhar limit. We provide follow-up spectroscopy of these two white dwarfs and show that they are indeed significantly below this limit. We expand our model calculations for CO core white dwarfs up to $M=1.334\ M_\odot$, which corresponds to the high-density limit of our equation-…
Metallicity and Temperature Indicators in M dwarf K band Spectra: Testing New & Updated Calibrations With Observations of 133 Solar Neighborhood M dwarfs
We present results of the largest, most comprehensive study ever done of the stellar multiplicity of the most common stars in the Galaxy, the red dwarfs. We have conducted an all-sky, volume-limited survey for stellar companions to 1120 M dwarf primaries known to lie within 25 pc of the Sun via trigonometric parallaxes. In addition to a comprehensive literature search, stars were explored in new surveys for companions at separations of 2" to 300". A reconnaissance of wide companions to separations of 300" was done via blinking archival images. I-band images were used to search our sample for c…
We use HST/STIS optical spectroscopy of ten M dwarfs in five closely separated binary systems to test models of M dwarf structure and evolution. Individual dynamical masses ranging from 0.083 to 0.405 Mo for all stars are known from previous work. We first derive temperature, radius, luminosity, surface gravity, and metallicity by fitting the BT-Settl atmospheric models. We verify that our methodology agrees with empirical results from long baseline optical interferometry for stars of similar spectral types. We then test whether or not evolutionary models can predict those quantities given the…

A large sample of over 38,000 chromospherically active candidate solar-like stars and cooler dwarfs from the RAVE survey is addressed in this paper. An improved activity identification with respect to the previous study was introduced to build a catalog of field stars in the Solar neighborhood with an excess emission flux in the calcium infrared triplet wavelength region. The central result of this work is the calibration of the age--activity relation for the main sequence dwarfs in a range from a few $10 \; \mathrm{Myr}$ up to a few Gyr. It enabled an order of magnitude age estimation of the …
White dwarfs are the remnants of low and intermediate mass stars. Because of electron degeneracy, their evolution is just a simple gravothermal process of cooling. Recently, thanks to Gaia data, it has been possible to construct the luminosity function of massive (0.9 < M/Msun < 1.1) white dwarfs in the solar neighborhood (d < 100 pc). Since the lifetime of their progenitors is very short, the birth times of both, parents and daughters, are very close and allow to reconstruct the (effective) star formation rate. This rate started growing from zero during the early Galaxy and reached a maximum …
In an effort to identify nearby and unusual cold objects in the solar neighborhood, we searched for previously unidentified moving objects using CatWISE2020 proper motion data combined with machine learning methods. We paired the motion candidates with their counterparts in 2MASS, UHS, and VHS. Then we searched for white dwarf, brown dwarf, and subdwarf outliers on the resulting color-color diagrams. This resulted in the discovery of 16 new dwarfs including two nearby M dwarfs (< 30 pc), a possible young L dwarf, a high motion early T dwarf and 3 later T dwarfs. This research represents a step…
We present 114 trigonometric parallaxes for 107 nearby white dwarf (WD) systems from both the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory Parallax Investigation (CTIOPI) and the U. S. Naval Observatory Flagstaff Station (NOFS) parallax programs. Of these, 76 parallaxes for 69 systems were measured by the CTIOPI program and 38 parallaxes for as many systems were measured by the NOFS program. A total of 50 systems are confirmed to be within the 25 pc horizon of interest. Coupled with a spectroscopic confirmation of a common proper motion companion to a Hipparcos star within 25 pc as well as confirma…
Prior studies have hypothesized that some polluted white dwarfs record continent-like granitic crust--which is abundant on Earth and perhaps uniquely indicative of plate tectonics. But these inferences derive from only a few elements, none of which define rock type. We thus present the first estimates of rock types on exoplanets that once orbited polluted white dwarfs--stars whose atmospheric compositions record the infall of formerly orbiting planetary objects--examining cases where Mg, Si, Ca and Fe are measured with precision. We find no evidence for continental crust, or other crust types,…

We present the discovery of an extremely cold, nearby brown dwarf in the solar neighborhood, found in the CatWISE catalog (Eisenhardt et al., in prep.). Photometric follow-up with Spitzer reveals that the object, CWISEP J193518.59-154620.3, has ch1$-$ch2 = 3.24$\,\pm\,$0.31 mag, making it one of the reddest brown dwarfs known. Using the Spitzer photometry and the polynomial relations from Kirkpatrick et al. (2019) we estimate an effective temperature in the $\sim$270--360 K range, and a distance estimate in the 5.6$-$10.9 pc range. We combined the WISE, NEOWISE, and Spitzer data to measure a p…
The white dwarf luminosity function is an important tool to understand the properties of the Solar neighborhood, like its star formation history, and its age. Here we present a population synthesis study of the white dwarf population within 40~pc from the Sun, and compare the results of this study with the properties of the observed sample. We use a state-of-the-art population synthesis code based on Monte Carlo techniques, that incorporates the most recent and reliable white dwarf cooling sequences, an accurate description of the Galactic neighborhood, and a realistic treatment of all the kno…
We use 20 years of astrometric data from the RECONS program on the CTIO/SMARTS 0.9-m to provide new insight into multiple star systems in the solar neighborhood. We provide new and updated parallaxes for 210 systems and derive nine high-quality astrometric orbits with periods of 2.49 - 16.63 years. Using a total of 542 systems' parallaxes from RECONS, we compare systems within 25 parsecs to Gaia DR2 to define criteria for selecting unresolved astrometric multiples from the DR2 results. We find that three out of four unresolved multi-star red dwarf systems within 25 pc in DR2 have parallax_erro…
We report initial results of a large radial velocity survey of K dwarfs up to a distance of 50 pc from the Solar System, to look for stellar, brown dwarf, and jovian planets using radial velocities from the CHIRON spectrograph on the CTIO/SMARTS 1.5m telescope. We identify three new exoplanet candidates orbiting host stars in the K dwarf survey, and confirm a hot Jupiter from TESS orbiting TOI 129. Our techniques are confirmed via five additional known exoplanet orbiting K dwarfs, bringing the number of orbital solutions presented here to 9, each hosting an exoplanet candidate with a minimum m…
We describe the 44 systems discovered to be within 10 parsecs of the Sun by the RECONS team, primarily via the long-term astrometry program at CTIO that began in 1999. The systems --- including 41 with red dwarf primaries, 2 white dwarfs, and 1 brown dwarf --- have been found to have trigonometric parallaxes greater than 100 milliarcseconds (mas), with errors of 0.4--2.4 mas in all but one case. We provide updated astrometric, photometric (VRIJHK magnitudes), spectral type, and multiplicity information here. Among these are 14 systems that are new entries to the 10 parsec sample based on paral…
The K2 mission is targeting large numbers of nearby (d<100 pc) GKM dwarfs selected from the SUPERBLINK proper motion survey (mu>40 mas yr^-1, V<20). Additionally, the mission is targeting low-mass, high proper motion stars associated with the local (d<500 pc) Galactic halo population also selected from SUPERBLINK. K2 campaigns 0 through 8 monitored a total of 27,382 of these cool main-sequence stars. We used the auto-correlation function to search for fast rotators by identifying short-period photometric modulations in the K2 light curves. We identified 508 candidate fast rotators with rotatio…
Rotation is a directly-observable stellar property, and drives magnetic field generation and activity through a magnetic dynamo. Main sequence stars with masses below approximately 0.35Msun (mid-to-late M dwarfs) are fully-convective, and are expected to have a different type of dynamo mechanism than solar-type stars. Measurements of their rotation rates provide insights into these mechanisms, but few rotation periods are available for these stars at field ages. Using photometry from the MEarth transit survey, we measure rotation periods for 387 nearby, mid-to-late M dwarfs in the Northern hem…
As part of a comprehensive effort to characterize the nearest stars, the CHIRON echelle spectrograph on the CTIO/SMARTS 1.5m telescope is being used to acquire high resolution (R = 80000) spectra of K dwarfs within 50 parsecs. This paper provides spectral details about 35 K dwarfs from five benchmark sets with estimated ages spanning 20 Myr -- 5.7 Gyr. Four spectral age and activity indicators are tested, three of which aligned with the estimated ages of the benchmark groups -- the Na I doublet (5889.95 $Å$ and 5895.92 $Å$), the H$α$ line (6562.8 $Å$), and the Li I resonance line (6707.8 $Å$).…
We present the first results of a multi-year program to map the orbits of M dwarf multiples within 25 parsecs. The observations were conducted primarily during 2019 - 2020 using speckle interferometry at the Southern Astrophysical Research (SOAR) Telescope in Chile, using the High-Resolution Camera mounted on the adaptive optics module (HRCam+SAM). The sample of nearby M dwarfs is drawn from three sources: multiples from the RECONS long-term astrometric monitoring program at the SMARTS 0.9m, known multiples for which these new observations will enable or improve orbit fits, and candidate multi…

Oxygen and carbon are important elements in stellar populations. Their behavior refers to the formation history of the stellar populations. C and O abundances would also obviously influence stellar opacities and the overall metal abundance $Z$. With observed high-quality spectroscopic properties, we construct stellar models with C and O elements, to give more accurate ages for 70 metal-poor dwarfs, which have been determined to be high-$α$ halo, low-$α$ halo and thick-disk stars. Our results show that high-$α$ halo stars are relatively older than low-$α$ halo stars by around 2.0 Gyr. The thick…
We present Spitzer 3.6$μ$m and 4.5$μ$m follow-up of 170 candidate extremely cool brown dwarfs newly discovered via the combination of WISE and NEOWISE imaging at 3$-$5$μ$m. CatWISE, a joint analysis of archival WISE and NEOWISE data, has improved upon the motion measurements of AllWISE by leveraging a $>$10$\times$ time baseline enhancement, from 0.5 years (AllWISE) to 6.5 years (CatWISE). As a result, CatWISE motion selection has yielded a large sample of previously unrecognized brown dwarf candidates, many of which have archival detections exclusively in the WISE 4.6$μ$m (W2) channel, sugges…

The carbon to oxygen ratio in a protoplanetary disk can have a dramatic influence on the compositions of any terrestrial planets formed. In regions of high C/O, planets form primarily from carbonates and in regions of low C/O, the ratio of magnesium to silicon determines the types of silicates which dominate the compositions. We present C/O and Mg/Si ratios for 849 F, G, and K dwarfs in the solar neighborhood. We find that the frequency of carbon-rich dwarfs in the solar neighborhood is < 0.13% and that 156 known planet hosts in the sample follow a similar distribution as all of the stars as a…
We have conducted a novel search of most of the southern sky for nearby red dwarfs having low proper motions, with specific emphasis on those with proper motion < 0.18 arcsec yr-1, the lower cutoff of Luyten's classic proper motion catalog. We used a tightly constrained search of the SuperCOSMOS database and a suite of photometric distance relations for photographic BRI and 2MASS JHKs magnitudes to estimate distances to more than fourteen million red dwarf candidates. Here we discuss 29 stars in 26 systems estimated to be within 25 parsecs, all of which have pm < 0.18 arcsec yr-1, which we hav…
Recent studies of the stellar population in the solar neighborhood (<20 pc) suggest that there are undetected white dwarfs (WDs) in multiple systems with main sequence companions. Detecting these hidden stars and obtaining a more complete census of nearby WDs is important for our understanding of binary and galactic evolution, as well as the study of explosive phenomena. In an attempt to uncover these hidden WDs, we present intermediate resolution spectroscopy over the wavelength range 3000-25000 Å of 101 nearby M dwarfs (dMs), observed with the Very Large Telescope X-Shooter spectrograph. For…
Late M-type dwarfs in the solar neighborhood include a mixture of very low-mass stars and brown dwarfs which is difficult to disentangle due to the lack of constraints on their age such as trigonometric parallax, lithium detection and space velocity. We search for young brown dwarf candidates among a sample of 28 nearby late-M dwarfs with spectral types between M5.0 and M9.0, and we also search for debris disks around three of them. Based on theoretical models, we used the color $I-J$, the $J$-band absolute magnitude and the detection of the Li I 6708 $Å$ doublet line as a strong constraint to…
Accurate stellar properties are essential for precise stellar astrophysics and exoplanetary science. In the M-dwarf regime, much effort has gone into defining empirical relations that can use readily accessible observables to assess physical stellar properties. Often, these relations for the quantity of interest are cast as a non-linear function of available data; however, in Bayesian modeling the reverse is needed. In this article, we introduce a new Bayesian framework to self-consistently and simultaneously apply multiple empirical calibrations to fully characterize the mass, luminosity, rad…
