In this paper, delay constrained performance of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system in a dense environment with co-channel interference is investigated. We apply orthogonal space-time block coding (OSTBC) at the transmitter, and for alleviating the high complexity and cost of the MIMO system, receive antenna selection (RAS) scheme is employed in the downlink. Here, for simple and cheap mobile handsets, one antenna is chosen at the receiver in each utilization of the channel. Under these assumptions, a maximum constant arrival rate with the delay quality-of-service (QoS) guarantee in a wireless channel is extracted. We obtain a closed-form solution for the effective capacity of the MIMO-OSTBC channel with the RAS scheme in a quasi-static Rayleigh fading conditions and co-channel interference. After all, the numerical simulations are provided and verified the theoretical results.
In this paper, we consider the relaying of orthogonal space time block codes (OSTBCs) in a two-way amplify-and-forward (AF) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay system with estimated channel state information (CSI). A simple four phase protocol is used for training and OSTBC data transmission. Decoding of OSTBC data at a user terminal is performed by replacing the exact CSI by the estimated CSI, in a maximum likelihood decoder. Tight approximations for the moment generating function (m.g.f.) of the received signal-to-noise ratio at a user is derived under Rayleigh fading by ignoring the…
In this paper, a proposal to improve the reliability of a downlink multiuser (MU) MIMO transmission scheme is investigated with the use of a new approach in orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBC) and network coding with a superposition modulated system and side information. With the new encoded OSTBC approach, diversity is offered where each user receives all other users' symbols, which allows the recovery of symbols in several ways. In addition, multiple users can be accommodated with the same resource, which is quite useful in a wireless system where resources are always restricted. By em…
In mobile cellular networks, it is estimated that more than 60% of voice and data services occur indoors. Therefore, cellular network operators have shown an unprecedented interest in research on femtocell systems from various aspects to extend the indoor wireless coverage for providing high-quality and high data-rate wireless multimedia services contents. In an effort for reducing the bit-error probabilities (BEPs) and also increasing bit/symbol capacity of bandwidth limited error-prone wireless channels in femtocell propagation areas, this paper presents the performance of a promising candid…
Because of the emerging field of Internet of Things (IoT), future backscatter RFID is required to be more reliable and data intensive. Motivated by this, orthogonal space-time block code (OSTBC), which is very successful in mobile communications for its low complexity and high performance, has already been investigated for backscatter RFID. On the other hand, a recently proposed scheme called unitary query was shown to be able to considerably improve the reliability of backscatter radio by exploiting query diversity. Therefore incorporating the classical OSTBC (at the tag end) with the recentl…
An intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system with transmit antenna selection (TAS) using orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBC) scheme is proposed in this paper. This system combines TAS and IRS with hybrid analog-digital beamforming (HBF) for 60 GHz mmWave communications in order to exploit the benefits of TAS, OSTBC, analog beamforming (ABF), and transmit digital precoding techniques. The proposed system, however, benefits from the transmit diversity gain of OSTBC scheme as well as from the signal-to-noise r…
It is well known, that the Alamouti scheme is the only space-time code from orthogonal design achieving the capacity of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication system with n_T=2 transmit antennas and n_R=1 receive antenna. In this work, we propose the n-times stacked Alamouti scheme for n_T=2n transmit antennas and show that this scheme achieves the capacity in the case of n_R=1 receive antenna. This result may regarded as an extension of the Alamouti case. For the more general case of more than one receive antenna, we show that if the number of transmit antennas is high…
This paper investigates the performance of optimal single stream beamforming schemes in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) dual-hop amplify-and-forward (AF) systems. Assuming channel state information is not available at the source and relay, the optimal transmit and receive beamforming vectors are computed at the destination, and the transmit beamforming vector is sent to the transmitter via a dedicated feedback link. Then, a set of new closed-form expressions for the statistical properties of the maximum eigenvalue of the resultant channel is derived, i.e., the cumulative density function…
In this paper, a two-hop relay assisted cooperative Orthogonal Space-Time Block Codes (OSTBC) transmission scheme is considered for the downlink communication of a cellular system, where the base station (BS) and the relay station (RS) cooperate and transmit data to the user equipment (UE) in a distributed fashion. We analyze the impact of the SNR imbalance between the BS-UE and RS-UE links, as well as the imperfect channel estimation at the UE receiver. The performance is analyzed in the presence of Rayleigh flat fading and our results show that the SNR imbalance does not impact the spatial d…
We propose a downlink beamforming scheme that combines spatial division and orthogonal space-time block coding (OSTBC) in multi-user massive MIMO systems. The beamformer is divided into two parts: a pre-beamforming matrix to separate the users into different beams with no interference between each other, which is designed based on the low rank covariance matrix of the downlink channel, and a linear precoding matrix using partial or even no channel state information (CSI) concatenated by an OSTBC. To construct the pre-beamforming matrix, a simple method that selects columns from DFT matrix is p…
This letter investigates the problem of blind detection of orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBC) over a quasi-static flat multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Rayleigh fading channel. We first introduce a core iterative least-squares (ILS) algorithm to blindly detect OSTBC signals without the knowledge of channel state information (SCI) at the receiver. This ILS algorithm has low computational complexity but may converge to local optimum which offers unreliable detection result. Then, in order to improve the detection performance, we propose an enhanced ILS (E-ILS) approach which is based…
In this thesis, we study differential modulation schemes which do not need channel knowledge at the transmitter nor at the receiver. First, we consider single-antenna systems and investigate the use of Differential Amplitude Phase Shift Keying (DAPSK) modulation. We study the use of Multiple-Symbol Differential Detection (MSDD) to bridge the performance gap between coherent and non-coherent systems and remove the error floor associated with fast-fading channels. Second, we consider multi-antenna systems to combat fading and improve the transmission reliability. The resulting performance improv…
We propose several differential decoding schemes for asynchronous multi-user MIMO systems based on orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBCs) where neither the transmitters nor the receiver has knowledge of the channel. First, we derive novel low complexity differential decoders by performing interference cancelation in time and employing different decoding methods. The decoding complexity of these schemes grows linearly with the number of users. We then present additional differential decoding schemes that perform significantly better than our low complexity decoders and outperform the existi…
In this paper, the symbol error rate (SER) and the bit error rate (BER) of orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBCs) and their achievable capacity over an amplify-and-forward (AF) relay channel with multiple antennas at source and destination and single antenna at relay node are investigated. Considered are receive antenna selection, transmit antenna selection, and joint antenna selection at both the transmitter and the receiver. The exact SERs of OSTBCs for M-PSK and square M-QAM constellations are obtained using the moment generating functions (MGFs). Also, we analyze the achievable capacit…
We propose a deep-learning approach for the joint MIMO detection and channel decoding problem. Conventional MIMO receivers adopt a model-based approach for MIMO detection and channel decoding in linear or iterative manners. However, due to the complex MIMO signal model, the optimal solution to the joint MIMO detection and channel decoding problem (i.e., the maximum likelihood decoding of the transmitted codewords from the received MIMO signals) is computationally infeasible. As a practical measure, the current model-based MIMO receivers all use suboptimal MIMO decoding methods with affordable …
In this contribution, the evaluation of the diversity of the MIMO MMSE receiver is addressed for finite rates in both flat fading channels and frequency selective fading channels with cyclic prefix. It has been observed recently that in contrast with the other MIMO receivers, the MMSE receiver has a diversity depending on the aimed finite rate, and that for sufficiently low rates the MMSE receiver reaches the full diversity - that is, the diversity of the ML receiver. This behavior has so far only been partially explained. The purpose of this paper is to provide complete proofs for flat fading…
Diversity order is an important measure for the performance of communication systems over MIMO fading channels. In this paper, we prove that in MIMO multiple access systems (or MIMO point-to-point systems with V-BLAST transmission), lattice-reduction-aided decoding achieves the maximum receive diversity (which is equal to the number of receive antennas). Also, we prove that the naive lattice decoding (which discards the out-of-region decoded points) achieves the maximum diversity.
In most MIMO systems, the family of waterfall error curves, calculated at different spectral efficiencies, are asymptotically parallel at high SNR. In other words, most MIMO systems exhibit a single diversity value for all fixed rates. The MIMO MMSE receiver does not follow this pattern and exhibits a varying diversity in its family of error curves. This work analyzes this interesting behavior of the MMSE MIMO receiver and produces the MMSE MIMO diversity at all rates. The diversity of the quasi-static flat-fading MIMO channel consisting of any arbitrary number of transmit and receive antennas…
In this paper, we investigate a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system with simultaneous information detection (ID) and energy harvesting (EH) receiver. This point-to-point system operates in the vicinity of active interfering nodes. The receiver performs power splitting where a portion of received signal undergoes analog energy harvesting circuitry. Further, the information content of the other portion is extracted after performing digital beamforming. In this MIMO system, information carrier eigen-modes are not necessarily the eigen-modes with the strongest energy level. Hence, it is b…
Recently, a quasi-orthogonal space-time block code (QSTBC) capable of achieving a significant fraction of the outage mutual information of a multiple-input-multiple output (MIMO) wireless communication system for the case of four transmit and one receive antennas was proposed. We generalize these results to $n_T=2^n$ transmit and an arbitrary number of receive antennas $n_R$. Furthermore, we completely characterize the structure of the equivalent channel for the general case and show that for all $n_T=2^n$ and $n_R$ the eigenvectors of the equivalent channel are fixed and independent from the …
The spectrum sharing has recently passed into a mainstream Cognitive Radio (CR) strategy. We investigate the core issue in this strategy: interference mitigation at Primary Receiver (PR).We propose a linear precoder design which aims at alleviating the interference caused by Secondary User (SU) from the source for Orthogonal Space-Time Block Coding (OSTBC) based CR. We resort to Minimum Variance (MV) approach to contrive the precoding matrix at Secondary Transmitter (ST) in order to maximize the Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) at Secondary Receiver (SR) on the premise that the orthogonality of OST…
We consider a multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) system that uses orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). Several receivers are developed for data detection of MU-MIMO transmissions where two users share the same OFDM time and frequency resources. The receivers have partial state information about the MU-MIMO transmission with each receiver having knowledge of the MU-MIMO channel, however the modulation constellation of the co-scheduled user is unknown. We propose a joint maximum likelihood (ML) modulation classification of the co-scheduled user and data detection r…
In this paper we investigate the achievable rate of LOS MIMO systems that use 1-bit quantization and spatial oversampling at the receiver. We propose that by using additional antennas at the receiver, the loss incurred due to the strong limitation of the quantization can be decreased. Mutual information results show that considerable rate gains can be achieved depending on the number and arrangement of the antennas. In some of the cases, even the full available rate from the transmitter can be attained. Furthermore, the results also reveal that two-dimensional antenna arrays can benefit more f…
We design jamming resistant receivers to enhance the robustness of a massive MIMO uplink channel against jamming. In the pilot phase, we estimate not only the desired channel, but also the jamming channel by exploiting purposely unused pilot sequences. The jamming channel estimate is used to construct the linear receive filter to reduce impact that jamming has on the achievable rates. The performance of the proposed scheme is analytically and numerically evaluated. These results show that the proposed scheme greatly improves the rates, as compared to conventional receivers. Moreover, the propo…
We propose blind adaptive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) linear receivers for DS-CDMA systems using multiple transmit antennas and space-time block codes (STBC) in multipath channels. A space-time code-constrained constant modulus (CCM) design criterion based on constrained optimization techniques is considered and recursive least squares (RLS) adaptive algorithms are developed for estimating the parameters of the linear receivers. A blind space-time channel estimation method for MIMO DS-CDMA systems with STBC based on a subspace approach is also proposed along with an efficient RLS algorithm…
Linear receivers are considered as an attractive low-complexity alternative to optimal processing for multi-antenna MIMO communications. In this paper we characterize the performance of MMSE MIMO receivers in the limit of large antenna numbers in the presence of channel correlations. Using the replica method, we generalize our results obtained in arXiv:0810.0883 to Kronecker-product correlated channels and calculate the asymptotic mean and variance of the mutual information of a MIMO system of parallel MMSE subchannels. The replica method allows us to use the ties between the optimal receiver …
Limited-backhaul cell-free Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), in which the fog radio access network (F-RAN) is implemented to exchange the information between access points (APs) and the central processing unit (CPU), is investigated. We introduce a novel approach where the APs estimate the channel and send back the quantized version of the estimated channel and the quantized version of the received signal to the central processing unit. The Max algorithm and the Bussgang theorem are exploited to model the optimum uniform quantization. The ergodic achievable rates are derived. We s…
In this paper, we introduce the novel use of linear spatial precoding based on fixed and known parameters of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels to improve the performance of space-time coded MIMO systems. We derive linear spatial precoding schemes for both coherent (channel is known at the receiver) and non-coherent (channel is un-known at the receiver) space-time coded MIMO systems. Antenna spacing and antenna placement (geometry) are considered as fixed parameters of MIMO channels, which are readily known at the transmitter. These precoding schemes exploit the antenna placement i…
We study the performance of uplink transmission in a large-scale (massive) MIMO system, where all the transmitters have single antennas and the receiver (base station) has a large number of antennas. Specifically, we analyze achievable degrees of freedom of the system without assuming channel state information at the receiver. Also, we quantify the amount of power saving that is possible with increasing number of receive antennas.
A joint robust transmit/receive adaptive beamforming for multiple-input multipleoutput (MIMO) radar based on probability-constrained optimization approach is developed in the case of Gaussian and arbitrary distributed mismatch present in both the transmit and receive signal steering vectors. A tight lower bound of the probability constraint is also derived by using duality theory. The formulated probability-constrained robust beamforming problem is nonconvex and NP-hard. However, we reformulate its cost function into a bi-quadratic function while the probability constraint splits into transmit…
This letter introduces an analytical model that gives the asymptotic cumulative number of molecules absorbed by spherical receivers in a diffusive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) molecular communication (MC) system with pointwise transmitters. In the proposed model, the reciprocal effect among the fully absorbing (FA) receivers is described by using the concept of fictitious pointwise negative source of molecules, the best position of which for each spherical receiver being defined by its absorption barycenter. We show that there is an agreement between the proposed asymptotic model and …
We consider interference alignment (IA) over K-user Gaussian MIMO interference channel (MIMO-IC) when the SNR is not asymptotically high. We introduce a generalization of IA which enables receive diversity inside the interference-free subspace. We generalize the existence criterion of an IA solution proposed by Yetis et al. to this case, thereby establishing a multi-user diversity-multiplexing trade-off (DMT) for the interference channel. Furthermore, we derive a closed-form tight lower-bound for the ergodic mutual information achievable using IA over a Gaussian MIMO-IC with Gaussian i.i.d. ch…
We design a jamming-resistant receiver scheme to enhance the robustness of a massive MIMO uplink system against jamming. We assume that a jammer attacks the system both in the pilot and data transmission phases. The key feature of the proposed scheme is that, in the pilot phase, we estimate not only the legitimate channel, but also the jamming channel by exploiting a purposely unused pilot sequence. The jamming channel estimate is used to constructed linear receive filters that reject the impact of the jamming signal. The performance of the proposed scheme is analytically evaluated using asymp…
This paper investigates the achievable sum rate of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless systems employing linear minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) receivers. We present a new analytic framework which unveils an interesting connection between the achievable sum rate with MMSE receivers and the ergodic mutual information achieved with optimal receivers. This simple but powerful result enables the vast prior literature on ergodic MIMO mutual information to be directly applied to the analysis of MMSE receivers. The framework is particularized to various Rayleigh and Rician channel scenar…
An adaptive joint power allocation (JPA) and linear receiver design algorithm using the minimum bit error rate (MBER) criterion for a cooperative Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) network is proposed. The system employs multiple relays with Distributed Space-Time Coding (DSTC) schemes and an Amplify-and-Forward (AF) strategy. It is designed according to a joint constrained optimization algorithm to determine the MBER power allocation parameters and the receive filter parameters for each transmitted symbol. The simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm obtains performance gain…
In this work, we propose a novel adaptive reduced-rank strategy based on joint interpolation, decimation and filtering (JIDF) for large multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. In this scheme, a reduced-rank framework is proposed for linear receive processing and multiuser interference suppression according to the minimization of the bit error rate (BER) cost function. We present a structure with multiple processing branches that performs dimensionality reduction, where each branch contains a group of jointly optimized interpolation and decimation units, followed by a linear re…
The Internet of Things (IoT) could enable the development of cloud multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems where internet-enabled devices can work as distributed transmission/reception entities. We expect that spatial multiplexing with distributed reception using cloud MIMO would be a key factor of future wireless communication systems. In this paper, we first review practical receivers for distributed reception of spatially multiplexed transmit data where the fusion center relies on quantized received signals conveyed from geographically separated receive nodes. Using the structures of …
In this paper, a joint power allocation algorithm with minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) receiver for a cooperative Multiple-Input and Multiple-Output (MIMO) network which employs multiple relays and a Decode-and-Forward (DF) strategy is proposed. A Distributed Space-Time Coding (DSTC) scheme is applied in each relay node. We present a joint constrained optimization algorithm to determine the power allocation parameters and the MMSE receive filter parameter vectors for each transmitted symbol in each link, as well as the channel coefficients matrix. A Stochastic Gradient (SG) algorithm is deri…
This paper gives the approximate capacity region of a two-user MIMO interference channel with limited receiver cooperation, where the gap between the inner and outer bounds is in terms of the total number of receive antennas at the two receivers and is independent of the actual channel values. The approximate capacity region is then used to find the degrees of freedom region. For the special case of symmetric interference channels, we also find the amount of receiver cooperation in terms of the backhaul capacity beyond which the degrees of freedom do not improve. Further, the generalized degre…
In this paper, the pilot signal design for massive MIMO systems to maximize the training-based received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is considered under two channel models: block Gauss-Markov and block independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) channel models. First, it is shown that under the block Gauss-Markov channel model, the optimal pilot design problem reduces to a semi-definite programming (SDP) problem, which can be solved numerically by a standard convex optimization tool. Second, under the block i.i.d. channel model, an optimal solution is obtained in closed form. Numerical res…
This paper proposes a joint transmitter-receiver design to minimize the weighted sum power under the post-processing signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (post-SINR) constraints for all subchannels. Simulation results demonstrate that the algorithm can not only satisfy the post-SINR constraints but also easily adjust the power distribution among the users by changing the weights accordingly. Hence the algorithm can be used to alleviates the adjacent cell interference by reducing the transmitting power to the edge users without performance penalty.
In this paper, we address the message-passing receiver design for the 3D massive MIMO-OFDM systems. With the aid of the central limit argument and Taylor-series approximation, a computationally efficient receiver that performs joint channel estimation and decoding is devised by the framework of expectation propagation. Specially, the local belief defined at the channel transition function is expanded up to the second order with Wirtinger calculus, to transform the messages sent by the channel transition function to a tractable form. As a result, the channel impulse response (CIR) between each …
In this paper, we investigate the capacity of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems corrupted by complex-valued additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) when both the transmitter and the receiver employ 1-bit digital-to-analog converters (DACs) and 1-bit analog-to-digital-converters (ADCs). As a result of 1-bit DACs and ADCs, the transmitted and received symbols, as well as the transmit- and receive-side channel state information (CSI), are assumed to be quantized to 1-bit of information. The derived results show that the capacity of the considered massive MIMO system is $2N$ and $…
The capacity of a discrete-time multi-input multi-output (MIMO) Gaussian channel with output quantization is investigated for different receiver architectures. A general formulation of this problem is proposed in which the antenna outputs are processed by analog combiners while sign quantizers are used for analog-to-digital conversion. To exemplify this approach, four analog receiver architectures of varying generality and complexity are considered: (a) multiple antenna selection and sign quantization of the antenna outputs, (b) single antenna selection and multilevel quantization, (c) multipl…
This paper investigated the uplink of multi-user massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems with a mixed analog-to-digital converter (ADC) receiver architecture, in which some antennas are equipped with costly full-resolution ADCs and others with less expensive low-resolution ADCs. A closed-form approximation of the achievable spectral efficiency (SE) with the maximum-ratio combining (MRC) detector is derived. Based on this approximated result, the effects of the number of base station antennas, the transmit power, the proportion of full-resolution ADCs in the mixed-ADC structure, and the…
In this paper, we propose a MIMO receiver algorithm that exploits {\em channel hardening} that occurs in large MIMO channels. Channel hardening refers to the phenomenon where the off-diagonal terms of the ${\bf H}^H{\bf H}$ matrix become increasingly weaker compared to the diagonal terms as the size of the channel gain matrix ${\bf H}$ increases. Specifically, we propose a message passing detection (MPD) algorithm which works with the real-valued matched filtered received vector (whose signal term becomes ${\bf H}^T{\bf H}{\bf x}$, where ${\bf x}$ is the transmitted vector), and uses a Gaussia…
A novel transmission protocol is conceived for a multi-user, multi-relay, multiple-input--multiple-output orthogonal frequency-division multiple-access (MIMO-OFDMA) cellular network based on joint transmit and receive beamforming. More specifically, the network's MIMO channels are mathematically decomposed into several effective multiple-input--single-output (MISO) channels, which are spatially multiplexed for transmission. For the sake of improving the attainable capacity, these MISO channels are grouped using a pair of novel grouping algorithms, which are then evaluated in terms of their per…
In this paper, we investigate the spectral efficiency (SE) of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with a large number of antennas at the base station (BS) accounting for physical space constraints. In contrast to the vast body of related literature, which considers fixed inter-element spacing, we elaborate on a practical topology in which an increase in the number of antennas in a fixed total space induces an inversely proportional decrease in the inter-antenna distance. For this scenario, we derive exact and approximate expressions, as well as simplified upper/lower bounds, …
The fundamental limits of communication over multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) networks are considered when a limited number of one-bit analog to digital converters (ADC) are used at the receiver terminals. Prior works have mainly focused on point-to-point communications, where receiver architectures consisting of a concatenation of an analog processing module, a limited number of one-bit ADCs with non-adaptive thresholds, and a digital processing module are considered. In this work, a new receiver architecture is proposed which utilizes adaptive threshold one-bit ADCs - where the ADC thre…
In this paper, we study the impact of carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation/compensation on the information rate performance of the zero-forcing (ZF) receiver in the uplink of a multi-user massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. Analysis of the derived closed-form expression of the per-user information rate reveals that with increasing number of BS antennas $M$, an $\mathcal{O}(\sqrt{M})$ array gain is achievable, which is same as that achieved in the ideal zero CFO scenario. Also it is observed that compared to the ideal zero CFO case, the performance degradation in the pres…
We study the degrees of freedom (DoF) of the multiple-input multiple-output X-channel (MIMO XC) with delayed channel state information at the transmitters (delayed CSIT), assuming linear coding strategies at the transmitters. We present two results: 1) the linear sum DoF for MIMO XC with general antenna configurations, and 2) the linear DoF region for MIMO XC with symmetric antennas. The converse for each result is based on developing a novel rank-ratio inequality that characterizes the maximum ratio between the dimensions of received linear subspaces at the two multiple-antenna receivers. The…
The uplink achievable rate of massive multiple- input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems, where the low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are assumed to equip at the base station (BS), is investigated in this paper. We assume that only imperfect channel station information is known at the BS. Then a new MMSE receiver is designed by taking not only the Gaussian noise, but also the channel estimation error and quantizer noise into account. By using the Stieltjes transform of random matrix, we further derive a tight asymptotic equivalent for the uplink achievable rate with proposed MMSE …
We study the performance region of a general multicell downlink scenario with multiantenna transmitters, hardware impairments, and low-complexity receivers that treat interference as noise. The Pareto boundary of this region describes all efficient resource allocations, but is generally hard to compute. We propose a novel explicit characterization that gives Pareto optimal transmit strategies using a set of positive parameters---fewer than in prior work. We also propose an implicit characterization that requires even fewer parameters and guarantees to find the Pareto boundary for every choice …
One of the key features of next generation wireless communication systems will be the use of frequencies in the range 10-100GHz (aka mmWave band) in densely populated indoor and outdoor scenarios. Due to the reduced wavelength, antenna arrays with a large number of antennas can be packed in very small volumes, making thus it possible to consider, at least in principle, communication links wherein not only the base-station, but also the user device, are equipped with very large antenna arrays. We denote this configuration as a "doubly-massive" MIMO wireless link. This paper introduces the conce…
Millimeter wave (mmWave) systems operating over a wide bandwidth and using a large number of antennas impose a heavy burden on power consumption. In a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) uplink, analog-to-digital con- verters (ADCs) would be the primary consumer of power in the base station receiver. This paper proposes a bit allocation (BA) method for mmWave multi-user (MU) massive MIMO systems under a power constraint. We apply ADCs to the outputs of an analog phased array for beamspace projection to exploit mmWave channel sparsity. We relax a mean square quantization error (MSQE) …
In this letter, we investigate the performance of multiple-input multiple-output techniques in a vehicle-to-vehicle communication system. We consider both transmit antenna selection with maximal-ratio combining and transmit antenna selection with selection combining. The channel propagation model between two vehicles is represented as n*Rayleigh distribution, which has been shown to be a realistic model for vehicle-to-vehicle communication scenarios. We derive tight analytical expressions for the outage probability and amount of fading of the post-processing signal-to-noise ratio.
Linear receivers are an attractive low-complexity alternative to optimal processing for multi-antenna MIMO communications. In this paper we characterize the information-theoretic performance of MIMO linear receivers in two different asymptotic regimes. For fixed number of antennas, we investigate the limit of error probability in the high-SNR regime in terms of the Diversity-Multiplexing Tradeoff (DMT). Following this, we characterize the error probability for fixed SNR in the regime of large (but finite) number of antennas. As far as the DMT is concerned, we report a negative result: we show …
In this paper, we consider the Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multi-receiver wiretap channel in which a transmitter wants to have confidential communication with an arbitrary number of users in the presence of an external eavesdropper. We derive the secrecy capacity region of this channel for the most general case. We first show that even for the single-input single-output (SISO) case, existing converse techniques for the Gaussian scalar broadcast channel cannot be extended to this secrecy context, to emphasize the need for a new proof technique. Our new proof technique makes u…
