We consider the problem of angle-robust joint transmit waveform and receive filter design for colocated Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) radar, in the presence of signal-dependent interferences. The design problem is cast as a max-min optimization problem to maximize the worst-case output signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) with respect to the unknown angle of the target of interest. Based on rank-one relaxation and semi-definite programming (SDP) representation of a nonnegative trigonometric polynomial, a cyclic optimization algorithm is proposed to tackle this problem. The effectiveness of the proposed method is illustrated via numerical examples.
In this paper, we propose a cyclic prefix (CP) based MIMO-OFDM range reconstruction method and its corresponding MIMO-OFDM waveform design for co-located MIMO radar systems. Our proposed MIMO-OFDM waveform design achieves the maximum signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain after the range reconstruction and its peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) in the discrete time domain is also optimal, i.e., 0dB, when Zadoff-Chu sequences are used in the discrete frequency domain as the weighting coefficients for the subcarriers. We also investigate the performance when there are transmit and receive digital beam…
In this paper, colocated MIMO radar waveform design is considered by minimizing the integrated side-lobe level to obtain beam patterns with lower side-lobe levels than competing methods. First, a quadratic programming problem is formulated to design beam patterns by using the criteria for a minimal integrated side-lobe level. A theorem is derived that provides a closed-form analytical optimal solution that appears to be an extension of the Rayleigh quotient minimization for a possibly singular matrix in quadratic form. Such singularities are shown to occur in the problem of interest, but proof…
We consider a colocated MIMO radar scenario, in which the receive antennas forward their measurements to a fusion center. Based on the received data, the fusion center formulates a matrix which is then used for target parameter estimation. When the receive antennas sample the target returns at Nyquist rate, and assuming that there are more receive antennas than targets, the data matrix at the fusion center is low-rank. When each receive antenna sends to the fusion center only a small number of samples, along with the sample index, the receive data matrix has missing elements, corresponding to …
In this paper, we propose a transmit beamspace energy focusing technique for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar with application to direction finding for multiple targets. The general angular directions of the targets are assumed to be located within a certain spatial sector. We focus the energy of multiple (two or more) transmitted orthogonal waveforms within that spatial sector using transmit beamformers which are designed to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain at each receive antenna. The subspace decomposition-based techniques such as MUSIC can then be used for direction …
We present a cognitive prototype that demonstrates a colocated, frequency-division-multiplexed, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar which implements both temporal and spatial sub-Nyquist sampling. The signal is sampled and recovered via the Xampling framework. Cognition is due to the fact that the transmitter adapts its signal spectrum by emitting only those subbands that the receiver samples and processes. Real-time experiments demonstrate sub-Nyquist MIMO recovery of target scenes with 87.5% spatio-temporal bandwidth reduction and signal-to-noise-ratio of -10 dB.
We propose a new technique for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar with colocated antennas which we call phased-MIMO radar. The new technique enjoys the advantages of MIMO radar without sacrificing the main advantage of phased-array radar which is the coherent processing gain at the transmitting side. The essence of the proposed technique is to partition the transmitting array into a number of subarrays that are allowed to overlap. Then, each subarray is used to coherently transmit a waveform which is orthogonal to the waveforms transmitted by other subarrays. Coherent processing gain …
In colocated compressive sensing MIMO radar, the measurement matrix is specified by antenna placement. To guarantee an acceptable recovery performance, this measurement matrix should satisfy certain properties, e.g., a small coherence. Prior work in the literature often employs randomized placement algorithms which optimize the prior distribution of antenna locations. The performance of these algorithms is suboptimal, as they can be easily enhanced via expurgation. In this paper, we suggest an iterative antenna placement algorithm which determines the antenna locations deterministically. The p…
In colocated multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar using compressive sensing (CS), a receive node compresses its received signal via a linear transformation, referred to as measurement matrix. The samples are subsequently forwarded to a fusion center, where an L1-optimization problem is formulated and solved for target information. CS-based MIMO radar exploits the target sparsity in the angle-Doppler-range space and thus achieves the high localization performance of traditional MIMO radar but with many fewer measurements. The measurement matrix is vital for CS recovery performance. This …
In this paper, we propose MIMO OFDM radar with sufficient cyclic prefix (CP), where all OFDM pulses transmitted from different transmitters share the same frequency band and are orthogonal to each other for every subcarrier in the discrete frequency domain. The orthogonality is not affected by time delays from transmitters. Thus, our proposed MIMO OFDM radar has the same range resolution as single transmitter radar and achieves full spatial diversity. Orthogonal designs are used to achieve this orthogonality across the transmitters, with which it is only needed to design OFDM pulses for the fi…
A joint robust transmit/receive adaptive beamforming for multiple-input multipleoutput (MIMO) radar based on probability-constrained optimization approach is developed in the case of Gaussian and arbitrary distributed mismatch present in both the transmit and receive signal steering vectors. A tight lower bound of the probability constraint is also derived by using duality theory. The formulated probability-constrained robust beamforming problem is nonconvex and NP-hard. However, we reformulate its cost function into a bi-quadratic function while the probability constraint splits into transmit…
In this paper, we derive an ambiguity function (AF) for the transmit beamspace (TB)-based multipleinput multiple-output (MIMO) radar for the case of far-field targets and narrow-band waveforms. The effects of transmit coherent processing gain and waveform diversity are incorporated into the AF definition. To cover all the phase information conveyed by different factors, we introduce the equivalent transmit phase centers. The newly defined AF serves as a generalized AF form for which the phased-array (PA) and traditional MIMO radar AFs are important special cases. We establish relationships amo…
This work focuses on target detection in a colocated MIMO radar system. Instead of exploiting the classical temporal domain, we propose to explore the spatial dimension (i.e., number of antennas $M$) to derive asymptotic results for the detector. Specifically, we assume no a priori knowledge of the statistics of the autoregressive data generating process and propose to use a mispecified Wald-type detector, which is shown to have an asymptotic $χ$-squared distribution as $M\to\infty$. Closed-form expressions for the probabilities of false alarm and detection are derived. Numerical results are u…
In this paper, we address the problem of transmit beamspace design for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar with colocated antennas in application to direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation. A new method for designing the transmit beamspace matrix that enables the use of search-free DOA estimation techniques at the receiver is introduced. The essence of the proposed method is to design the transmit beamspace matrix based on minimizing the difference between a desired transmit beampattern and the actual one under the constraint of uniform power distribution across the transmit array elemen…
In this paper, we propose a two-dimensional (2D) joint transmit array interpolation and beamspace design for planar array mono-static multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) radar for direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation via tensor modeling. Our underlying idea is to map the transmit array to a desired array and suppress the transmit power outside the spatial sector of interest. In doing so, the signal-tonoise ratio is improved at the receive array. Then, we fold the received data along each dimension into a tensorial structure and apply tensor-based methods to obtain DOA estimates. In addition…
In this paper, we consider the design of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmitter which simultaneously functions as a MIMO radar and a base station for downlink multiuser communications. In addition to a power constraint, we require the covariance of the transmit waveform be equal to a given optimal covariance for MIMO radar, to guarantee the radar performance. With this constraint, we formulate and solve the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) balancing problem for multiuser transmit beamforming via convex optimization. Considering that the interference cannot be complet…
This paper considers secure simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) in cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The system consists of a large number of randomly (Poisson-distributed) located access points (APs) serving multiple information users (IUs) and an information-untrusted dual-antenna active energy harvester (EH). The active EH uses one antenna to legitimately harvest energy and the other antenna to eavesdrop information. The APs are networked by a centralized infinite backhaul which allows the APs to synchronize and cooperate via a central…
Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar systems have been shown to achieve superior resolution as compared to traditional radar systems with the same number of transmit and receive antennas. This paper considers a distributed MIMO radar scenario, in which each transmit element is a node in a wireless network, and investigates the use of compressive sampling for direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation. According to the theory of compressive sampling, a signal that is sparse in some domain can be recovered based on far fewer samples than required by the Nyquist sampling theorem. The DOA of tar…
A cognitive radar adapts the transmit waveform in response to changes in the radar and target environment. In this work, we analyze the recently proposed sub-Nyquist cognitive radar wherein the total transmit power in a multi-band cognitive waveform remains the same as its full-band conventional counterpart. For such a system, we derive lower bounds on the mean-squared-error (MSE) of a single-target time delay estimate. We formulate a procedure to select the optimal bands, and recommend distribution of the total power in different bands to enhance the accuracy of delay estimation. In particula…
A distributed MIMO radar is considered, in which the transmit and receive antennas belong to nodes of a small scale wireless network. The transmit waveforms could be uncorrelated, or correlated in order to achieve a desirable beampattern. The concept of compressive sampling is employed at the receive nodes in order to perform direction of arrival (DOA) estimation. According to the theory of compressive sampling, a signal that is sparse in some domain can be recovered based on far fewer samples than required by the Nyquist sampling theorem. The DOAs of targets form a sparse vector in the angle …
This paper studies the transmit beamforming in a downlink integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system, where a base station (BS) equipped with a uniform linear array (ULA) sends combined information-bearing and dedicated radar signals to simultaneously perform downlink multiuser communication and radar target sensing. Under this setup, we maximize the radar sensing performance (in terms of minimizing the beampattern matching errors or maximizing the minimum weighted beampattern gains), subject to the communication users' minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) requirement…
Radar imaging systems transmit modulated wideband waveform to achieve high range resolution resulting in high sampling rates at the receiver proportional to the bandwidth of the transmit waveform. Analog processing techniques can be used on receive to reduce the number of measurements to N, the number of potential delay bins. If the scene interrogated by the radar is assumed to be sparse consisting of K point targets, results from compressive sensing suggest that number of measurements can be further reduced to scale with K logN for stable recovery of a sparse scene from measurements with addi…
The problem of joint design of transmit waveforms and receive filters is desirable in many application scenarios of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar systems. In this paper, the joint design problem is investigated under the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) performance metric, in which case the problem is formulated to maximize the SINR at the receiver side subject to some practical transmit waveform constraints. A numerical algorithm is proposed for problem resolution based on the manifold optimization method, which has been shown to be powerful and flexible to address…
We propose a novel approach to enable the coexistence between Multi-Input-Multi-Output (MIMO) radar and downlink multi-user Multi-Input-Single-Output (MU-MISO) communication system. By exploiting the constructive multi-user interference (MUI), the proposed approach trades-off useful MUI power for reducing the transmit power, to obtain a power efficient transmission. This paper focuses on two optimization problems: a) Transmit power minimization at the base station (BS) while guaranteeing the receive signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) level of downlink users and the interference-to-…
Multiple input multiple output (MIMO) radar exhibits several advantages with respect to traditional radar array systems in terms of flexibility and performance. However, MIMO radar poses new challenges for both hardware design and digital processing. In particular, achieving high azimuth resolution requires a large number of transmit and receive antennas. In addition, the digital processing is performed on samples of the received signal, from each transmitter to each receiver, at its Nyquist rate, which can be prohibitively large when high resolution is needed. Overcoming the rate bottleneck, …
In order to improve the accuracy and resolution for transmit beamspace multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar, a search-free direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation method based on tensor decomposition and polynomial rooting is proposed. In the proposed method, a 3-order tensor is firstly designed to model the received signal of MIMO radar on the basis of the multi-linear property. Then, the factor matrix with target DOA information is obtained by the tensor decomposition via alternating least squares (ALS) algorithm, and subsequently the DOA estimation is converted into the independent min…
Co-Designing Statistical MIMO Radar and In-band Full-Duplex Multi-User MIMO Communications -- Part II: Joint Precoder, Radar Code, and Receive Filters Design
This paper presents an analysis of target localization accuracy, attainable by the use of MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) radar systems, configured with multiple transmit and receive sensors, widely distributed over a given area. The Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) for target localization accuracy is developed for both coherent and non-coherent processing. Coherent processing requires a common phase reference for all transmit and receive sensors. The CRLB is shown to be inversely proportional to the signal effective bandwidth in the non-coherent case, but is approximately inversely proport…
Recently proposed multiple input multiple output radars based on matrix completion (MIMO-MC) employ sparse sampling to reduce the amount of data that need to be forwarded to the radar fusion center, and as such enable savings in communication power and bandwidth. This paper proposes designs that optimize the sharing of spectrum between a MIMO-MC radar and a communication system, so that the latter interferes minimally with the former. First, the communication system transmit covariance matrix is designed to minimize the effective interference power (EIP) to the radar receiver, while maintainin…
We consider a general spectral coexistence scenario, wherein the channels and transmit signals of both radar and communications systems are unknown at the receiver. In this \textit{dual-blind deconvolution} (DBD) problem, a common receiver admits the multi-carrier wireless communications signal that is overlaid with the radar signal reflected-off multiple targets. When the radar receiver is not collocated with the transmitter, such as in passive or multistatic radars, the transmitted signal is also unknown apart from the target parameters. Similarly, apart from the transmitted messages, the co…
The designation of the radar system is to detect the position and velocity of targets around us. The radar transmits a waveform, which is reflected back from the targets, and echo waveform is received. In a commonly used model, the echo is a sum of a superposition of several delay-Doppler shifts of the transmitted waveform, and a noise component. The delay and Doppler parameters encode, respectively, the distances, and relative velocities, between the targets and the radar. Using standard digital-to-analog and sampling techniques, the estimation task of the delay-Doppler parameters, which invo…
A MIMO radar system is proposed for obtaining angle and Doppler information on potential targets. Transmitters and receivers are nodes of a small scale wireless network and are assumed to be randomly scattered on a disk. The transmit nodes transmit uncorrelated waveforms. Each receive node applies compressive sampling to the received signal to obtain a small number of samples, which the node subsequently forwards to a fusion center. Assuming that the targets are sparsely located in the angle- Doppler space, based on the samples forwarded by the receive nodes the fusion center formulates an l1-…
We present the design and hardware implementation of a radar prototype that demonstrates the principle of a sub-Nyquist collocated multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar. The setup allows sampling in both spatial and spectral domains at rates much lower than dictated by the Nyquist sampling theorem. Our prototype realizes an X-band MIMO radar that can be configured to have a maximum of 8 transmit and 10 receive antenna elements. We use frequency division multiplexing (FDM) to achieve the orthogonality of MIMO waveforms and apply the Xampling framework for signal recovery. The prototype al…
Traditional radar sensing typically involves matched filtering between the received signal and the shape of the transmitted pulse. Under the confinement of classic sampling theorem this requires that the received signals must first be sampled at twice the baseband bandwidth, in order to avoid aliasing. The growing demands for target distinction capability and spatial resolution imply significant growth in the bandwidth of the transmitted pulse. Thus, correlation based radar systems require high sampling rates, and with the large amounts of data sampled also necessitate vast memory capacity. In…
We address the problem of tensor decomposition in application to direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation for transmit beamspace (TB) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar. A general 4-order tensor model that enables computationally efficient DOA estimation is designed. Whereas other tensor decomposition-based methods treat all factor matrices as arbitrary, the essence of the proposed DOA estimation method is to fully exploit the Vandermonde structure of the factor matrices to take advantage of the shift-invariance between and within different subarrays. Specifically, the received signal of…
In the past few years, new approaches to radar signal processing have been introduced which allow the radar to perform signal detection and parameter estimation from much fewer measurements than that required by Nyquist sampling. These systems - referred to as sub-Nyquist radars - model the received signal as having finite rate of innovation and employ the Xampling framework to obtain low-rate samples of the signal. Sub-Nyquist radars exploit the fact that the target scene is sparse facilitating the use of compressed sensing (CS) methods in signal recovery. In this chapter, we review several p…
A radar system emits probing signals and records the reflections. Estimating the relative angles, delays, and Doppler shifts from the received signals allows to determine the locations and velocities of objects. However, due to practical constraints, the probing signals have finite bandwidth B, the received signals are observed over a finite time interval of length T only, and a radar typically has only one or a few transmit and receive antennas. These constraints fundamentally limit the resolution up to which objects can be distinguished. Specifically, a radar can not distinguish objects with…
Rate-Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA), relying on multi-antenna Rate-Splitting (RS) techniques, has emerged as a powerful strategy for multi-user multi-antenna systems. In this paper, RSMA is introduced as a unified multiple access for multi-antenna radar-communication (RadCom) system, where the base station has a dual communication and radar capability to simultaneously communicate with downlink users and probe detection signals to azimuth angles of interests. Using RS, messages are split into common and private parts, then encoded into common and private streams before being precoded and tra…
We investigate the problem of a monostatic pulse-Doppler radar transceiver trying to detect targets, sparsely populated in the radar's unambiguous time-frequency region. Several past works employ compressed sensing (CS) algorithms to this type of problem, but either do not address sample rate reduction, impose constraints on the radar transmitter, propose CS recovery methods with prohibitive dictionary size, or perform poorly in noisy conditions. Here we describe a sub-Nyquist sampling and recovery approach called Doppler focusing which addresses all of these problems: it performs low rate sam…
This paper investigates the fundamental limits on the target detection performance with a dual-function multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) radar communication (RadCom) systems. By assuming the presence of a point-like target and a communication receiver, closed-form expressions for the maximum detection probability and the transmit waveforms achieving the optimal performance are derived. Results show that for the considered case, the dual-function system should transmit coherent waveforms to achieve the optimal detection performance. Moreover, the angle separation between the target and com…
Dual-functional radar-communication (DFRC) is a promising new solution to simultaneously probe the radar target and transmit information in wireless networks. In this paper, we study the joint optimization of transmit and receive beamforming for the DFRC system. Specifically, the signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) of the radar is maximized under the SINR constraints of the communication user (CU), which characterizes the optimal tradeoff between radar and communication. In addition to simply using the communication signal for target probing, we further consider to exploit dedicated…
In a typical MIMO radar scenario, transmit nodes transmit orthogonal waveforms, while each receive node performs matched filtering with the known set of transmit waveforms, and forwards the results to the fusion center. Based on the data it receives from multiple antennas, the fusion center formulates a matrix, which, in conjunction with standard array processing schemes, such as MUSIC, leads to target detection and parameter estimation. In MIMO radars with compressive sensing (MIMO-CS), the data matrix is formulated by each receive node forwarding a small number of compressively obtained samp…
A multiple input, multiple output (MIMO) radar emits probings signals with multiple transmit antennas and records the reflections from targets with multiple receive antennas. Estimating the relative angles, delays, and Doppler shifts from the received signals allows to determine the locations and velocities of the targets. Standard approaches to MIMO radar based on digital matched filtering or compressed sensing only resolve the angle-delay-Doppler triplets on a $(1/(N_T N_R), 1/B,1/T)$ grid, where $N_T$ and $N_R$ are the number of transmit and receive antennas, $B$ is the bandwidth of the pro…
We consider a joint multiple-antenna radar-communications system in a co-existence scenario. Contrary to conventional applications, wherein at least the radar waveform and communications channel are known or estimated \textit{a priori}, we investigate the case when the channels and transmit signals of both systems are unknown. In radar applications, this problem arises in multistatic or passive systems, where transmit signal is not known. Similarly, highly dynamic vehicular or mobile communications may render prior estimates of wireless channel unhelpful. In particular, the radar signal reflec…
Modern radar systems are expected to operate reliably in congested environments. A candidate technology for meeting these demands is frequency agile radar (FAR), which randomly changes its carrier frequencies. FAR is known to improve the electronic counter-countermeasures (ECCM) performance while facilitating operation in congested setups. To enhance the target recovery performance of FAR in complex electromagnetic environments, we propose two radar schemes extending FAR to multi-carrier waveforms. The first is Wideband Multi-carrier Agile Radar (WMAR), which transmits/receives wideband wavefo…
We consider a rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA)-based communication and radar coexistence (CRC) system. The proposed system allows an RSMA-based communication system to share spectrum with multiple radars. Furthermore, RSMA enables flexible and powerful interference management by splitting messages into common parts and private parts to partially decode interference and partially treat interference as noise. The RSMA-based CRC system thus significantly improves spectral efficiency, energy efficiency and quality of service (QoS) of communication users (CUs). However, the RSMA-based CRC syst…
We consider a multicarrier chirp-based waveform for joint radar and communication (JRC) systems and derive its time discrete periodic ambiguity function (AF). An advantage of the waveform is that it includes a set of waveform parameters (e.g., chirp rate) which together with the transmit sequence, can be selected to flexibly shape the AF to be thumbtack-like, or to be ridge-like, either along the delay axis or the Doppler axis. These shapes are applicable for different use cases, e.g., target detection or timeand frequency synchronization. The results show that better signal detection performa…
This paper presents a pioneering study based on a series of experiments on the operation of commercial Time-Division Long-Term Evolution (TD-LTE) systems in the presence of pulsed interfering signals in the 3550-3650 MHz band. TD-LTE operations were carried out in channels overlapping and adjacent to the high power SPN-43 radar with various frequency offsets between the two systems to evaluate the susceptibility of LTE to a high power interfering signal. Our results demonstrate that LTE communication using low antenna heights was not adversely affected by the pulsed interfering signal operatin…
Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has been regarded as one of the most promising technologies for future wireless communications. However, the mutual interference in the communication radar coexistence system cannot be ignored. Inspired by the studies of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), we propose a double-RIS-assisted coexistence system where two RISs are deployed for enhancing communication signals and suppressing mutual interference. We aim to jointly optimize the beamforming of RISs and radar to maximize communication performance while maintaining radar detection perform…
We propose a method for synthesizing high range resolution profiles (HRRP) using stepped frequency waveform (SFW) processing. Conventional SFW radars sweep over the available spectrum linearly to achieve high resolution from their instantaneous bandwidth. However, they suffer from strong range-Doppler coupling and coexisting spectral interference. Prior works are able to mitigate only one of these drawbacks. We present a new \textit{ra}ndom \textit{s}parse \textit{ste}p-frequency \textit{r}adar (RaSSteR) waveform that consumes less spectral resources without loss of range resolution and estima…
Motivated by future automotive applications, we study some joint radar target detection and parameter estimation problems where the transmitter, equipped with a mono-static MIMO radar, wishes to detect multiple targets and then estimate their respective parameters, while simultaneously communicating information data using orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation. Assuming that the number of radio frequency chains is smaller than the number of antennas over the mmWave frequency band, we design hybrid digital-analog beamforming at the radar transmitter adapted to different operating pha…
