Recently, sparse representation based visual tracking methods have attracted increasing attention in the computer vision community. Although achieve superior performance to traditional tracking methods, however, a basic problem has not been answered yet --- that whether the sparsity constrain is really needed for visual tracking? To answer this question, in this paper, we first propose a robust non-sparse representation based tracker and then conduct extensive experiments to compare it against several state-of-the-art sparse representation based trackers. Our experiment results and analysis indicate that the proposed non-sparse tracker achieved competitive tracking accuracy with sparse trackers while having faster running speed, which support our non-sparse tracker to be used in practical applications.

Transformers have been successfully applied to the visual tracking task and significantly promote tracking performance. The self-attention mechanism designed to model long-range dependencies is the key to the success of Transformers. However, self-attention lacks focusing on the most relevant information in the search regions, making it easy to be distracted by background. In this paper, we relieve this issue with a sparse attention mechanism by focusing the most relevant information in the search regions, which enables a much accurate tracking. Furthermore, we introduce a double-head predicto…
Sparse representation has been widely studied in visual tracking, which has shown promising tracking performance. Despite a lot of progress, the visual tracking problem is still a challenging task due to appearance variations over time. In this paper, we propose a novel sparse tracking algorithm that well addresses temporal appearance changes, by enforcing template representability and temporal consistency (TRAC). By modeling temporal consistency, our algorithm addresses the issue of drifting away from a tracking target. By exploring the templates' long-term-short-term representability, the pr…
In this paper, we propose a robust visual tracking method which exploits the relationships of targets in adjacent frames using patchwise joint sparse representation. Two sets of overlapping patches with different sizes are extracted from target candidates to construct two dictionaries with consideration of joint sparse representation. By applying this representation into structural sparse appearance model, we can take two-fold advantages. First, the correlation of target patches over time is considered. Second, using this local appearance model with different patch sizes takes into account loc…
Sparse representation is a viable solution to visual tracking. In this paper, we propose a structured multi-task multi-view tracking (SMTMVT) method, which exploits the sparse appearance model in the particle filter framework to track targets under different challenges. Specifically, we extract features of the target candidates from different views and sparsely represent them by a linear combination of templates of different views. Unlike the conventional sparse trackers, SMTMVT not only jointly considers the relationship between different tasks and different views but also retains the structu…

Recently a category of tracking methods based on "tracking-by-detection" is widely used in visual tracking problem. Most of these methods update the classifier online using the samples generated by the tracker to handle the appearance changes. However, the self-updating scheme makes these methods suffer from drifting problem because of the incorrect labels of weak classifiers in training samples. In this paper, we split the class labels into true labels and noise labels and model them by sparse representation. A novel dynamic classifier selection method, robust to noisy training data, is propo…

The $\ell_1$ tracker obtains robustness by seeking a sparse representation of the tracking object via $\ell_1$ norm minimization \cite{Xue_ICCV_09_Track}. However, the high computational complexity involved in the $ \ell_1 $ tracker restricts its further applications in real time processing scenario. Hence we propose a Real Time Compressed Sensing Tracking (RTCST) by exploiting the signal recovery power of Compressed Sensing (CS). Dimensionality reduction and a customized Orthogonal Matching Pursuit (OMP) algorithm are adopted to accelerate the CS tracking. As a result, our algorithm achieves …

3D single object tracking is a key task in 3D computer vision. However, the sparsity of point clouds makes it difficult to compute the similarity and locate the object, posing big challenges to the 3D tracker. Previous works tried to solve the problem and improved the tracking performance in some common scenarios, but they usually failed in some extreme sparse scenarios, such as for tracking objects at long distances or partially occluded. To address the above problems, in this letter, we propose a sparse-to-dense and transformer-based framework for 3D single object tracking. First, we transfo…
In this paper, we propose a novel sparse coding and counting method under Bayesian framwork for visual tracking. In contrast to existing methods, the proposed method employs the combination of L0 and L1 norm to regularize the linear coefficients of incrementally updated linear basis. The sparsity constraint enables the tracker to effectively handle difficult challenges, such as occlusion or image corruption. To achieve realtime processing, we propose a fast and efficient numerical algorithm for solving the proposed model. Although it is an NP-hard problem, the proposed accelerated proximal gra…

Motion models play a great role in visual tracking applications for predicting the possible locations of objects in the next frame. Unlike target tracking in radar or aerospace domain which considers only points, object tracking in computer vision involves sizes of objects. Constant velocity motion model is the most widely used motion model for visual tracking, however, there is no clear and understandable derivation involving sizes of objects specially for new researchers joining this research field. In this document, we derive the constant velocity motion model that incorporates sizes of obj…

In this paper, visual tracking is empowered with wireless positioning to achieve high accuracy while maintaining robustness. Fundamentally different from the previous works, this study does not involve any specific wireless positioning algorithms. Instead, we use the confidence region derived from the wireless positioning Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) as the search region of visual trackers. The proposed framework is low-cost an…

On the other hand, motion cues provide discriminative and complementary information that can improve tracking performance.
