We report the first identification of forbidden line components from an element heavier than helium in the spectrum of astrophysical plasmas. As yet, these components were identified only in laboratory plasmas and not in astrophysical objects. Forbidden components are well known for neutral helium lines in hot stars, particularly in helium-rich post-AGB stars and white dwarfs. We discovered that two hitherto unidentified lines in the ultraviolet spectra of hot hydrogen-deficient (pre-) white dwarfs can be identified as forbidden line components of triply ionized carbon (C IV). The forbidden components (3p-4f and 3d-4d) appear in the blue and red wings of the strong, Stark broadened 3p-4d and 3d-4f lines at 1108 Angstroem and 1169 Angstroem, respectively. They are visible over a wide effective temperature range (60,000-200,000 K) in helium-rich (DO) white dwarfs and PG1159 stars that have strongly oversolar carbon abundances.
Abundances of lithium, carbon, and oxygen have been derived using spectral synthesis for a sample of 249 bright F, G, and K Northern Hemisphere dwarf stars from the high-resolution spectra acquired with the VUES spectrograph at the Moletai Astronomical Observatory of Vilnius University. The sample stars have metallicities, effective temperatures, and ages between -0.7 and 0.4 dex; 5000 and 6900 K; 1 and 12 Gyr, accordingly. We confirm a so far unexplained lithium abundance decrease at supersolar metallicities - $A$(Li) in our sample stars, which drop by 0.7 dex in the [Fe/H] range from +0.10 t…
We present an elemental abundance analysis for four newly discovered ultra metal-poor stars from the Hamburg/ESO survey, with $\mathrm{[Fe/H]}\leq-4$. Based on high-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra, we derive abundances for 17 elements in the range from Li to Ba. Three of the four stars exhibit moderate to large over-abundances of carbon, but have no enhancements in their neutron-capture elements. The most metal-poor star in the sample, HE~0233$-$0343 ($\mathrm{[Fe/H]} = -4.68$), is a subgiant with a carbon enhancement of $\mathrm{[C/Fe]}= +3.5$, slightly above the carbon-enhancement p…
The formation histories of lithium-rich and carbon-rich red giants are not yet understood. It has been proposed that the merger of a helium-core white dwarf with a red giant branch star might provide a solution. We have computed an extended grid of post-merger evolution models and combined these with predictions of binary star population synthesis. The results strongly support the proposal that the merger of a helium white dwarf with a red giant branch star can provide the progenitors of both lithium-rich red clump stars and early-R carbon stars. The distribution of post-merger models in $T_{\…
Most of relatively warm, unevolved metal-poor stars ($T_{\rm eff}\gtrsim 5800\,\mathrm{K}$ and $[{\rm Fe/H}]\lesssim -1.5$) exhibit almost constant lithium abundances, irrespective of metallicity or effective temperature, and thus form the so-called Spite plateau. This was originally interpreted as arising from lithium created by the Big Bang nucleosynthesis. Recent observations, however, have revealed that ultra metal-poor stars (UMP stars; $[\mathrm{Fe/H}]<-4.0$) have significantly lower lithium abundances than that of the plateau. Since most of the UMP stars are CEMP-no stars, carbon-enhanc…
Early-type R stars and J stars are a special type of carbon star, having enhanced nitrogen ($\rm [N/Fe]\approx 0.5$), lithium, a low \iso{12}{C}/\iso{13}{C} ratio ($<15$) and no s-element enhancements. The merger of a helium white dwarf with a red giant is regarded to be a possible model for the origin of early-type R stars, but the details of nucleosynthesis are not clear. In this paper we investigate three possible channels for helium white-dwarf + red-giant mergers, and find that, amongst the three, only a high-mass helium white dwarf subducted into a low core-mass red giant can make an ear…
Thermohaline mixing is a favoured mechanism for the so-called "extra mixing" on the red giant branch of low-mass stars. The mixing is triggered by the molecular weight inversion created above the hydrogen shell during first dredge-up when helium-3 burns via 3He(3He,2p)4He. The standard 1D diffusive mixing scheme cannot simultaneously match carbon and lithium abundances to NGC 6397 red giants. We investigate two modifications to the standard scheme: (1) an advective two stream mixing algorithm, and (2) modifications to the standard 1D thermohaline mixing formalism. We cannot simultaneously matc…
Hydrocarbon organic material, as found in the interstellar medium, exists in complex mixtures of aromatic and aliphatic forms. It is considered to be originated from carbon enriched giant stars during their final stages of evolution, when very strong mass loss occurs in a few thousand years on their way to become planetary nebulae. We show here that the same organic compounds appear to be formed in previous stages of the evolution of giant stars. More specifically, during the first ascending giant branch K-type stars. According to our model this happens only when these stars are being abruptly…
In an attempt to carry out a systematic study on the behavior of the photospheric abundances of Li, C, and O (along with Fe) for Hyades main-sequence stars in the T_eff range of ~5000-7000K, we conducted an extensive spectrum-synthesis analysis applied to four spectral regions (comprising lines of Fe-group elements, Li I 6708 line, C I 7111-7119 lines, and O I 6156-8 lines) based on the high-dispersion spectra of 68 selected F-G type stars belonging to this cluster. The abundances of C and O turned out to be fairly uniform in a marginally supersolar level such like the case of Fe: <[C/H]> = +0…
Extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars are an integral piece in the puzzle that is the early Universe, and although anomolous subclasses of EMP stars such as carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars are well-studied, they make up less than half of all EMP stars with [Fe/H] $\sim -3.0$. The amount of carbon depletion occurring on the red giant branch (carbon offset) is used to determine the evolutionary status of EMP stars, and this offset will differ between CEMP and normal EMP stars. The depletion mechanism employed in stellar models (from which carbon offfsets are derived) is very important, howeve…
Weak G-band (WGB) stars are a rare class of cool luminous stars that present a strong depletion in carbon, but also lithium abundance anomalies that have been little explored in the literature since the first discovery of these peculiar objects in the early 50's. Here we focus on the Li-rich WGB stars and report on their evolutionary status. We explore different paths to propose a tentative explanation for the lithium anomaly. Using archive data, we derive the fundamental parameters of WGB (Teff, log g, log(L/Lsun)) using Hipparcos parallaxes and recent temperature scales. From the equivalent …
Although not predicted by standard stellar evolution, the surface abundance of light elements, such as lithium (Li), carbon, and nitrogen, changes during the red giant branch (RGB) as a result of extra-mixing. This is associated usually with thermohaline mixing acting after the RGB bump. Peculiar Li-enriched RGB stars might also be related to either enhanced extra-mixing or pollution from external sources. We measure the Li abundance and carbon isotopic ratio 12C/13C in a sample of 166 field red giants with -0.3<[Fe/H]<0.2, targeted by the EXPRESS radial velocity program to analyze the effects…
Parameters and abundances for 1002 stars of spectral types F, G, and K of luminosity class IV and V have been derived. After culling the sample for rotational velocity and effective temperature, 867 stars remain for discussion. Twenty-eight elements are considered in the analysis. The α, iron-peak, and Period 5 transition metal abundances for these stars show a modest enhancement over solar averaging about 0.05 dex. The lanthanides are more abundant averaging about +0.2 dex over solar. The question is: Are these stars enhanced or is the Sun somewhat metal-poor relative to these stars? The cons…
The origin of R Coronae Borealis stars has been elusive for over 200 years. Currently, two theories for their formation have been presented. These are the Final Flash scenario, in which a dying asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star throws off its atmosphere to reveal the hydrogen poor, heavily processed material underneath, and the double degenerate scenario, in which two white dwarfs merge to produce a new star with renewed vigour. Some theories predict that the temperatures reached during the latter scenario would destroy any lithium originally present in the white dwarfs. The observed lithium …
We examine the effects of thermohaline mixing on the composition of the envelopes of low-metallicity asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. We have evolved models of 1, 1.5 and 2 solar masses from the pre-main sequence to the end of the thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch with thermohaline mixing applied throughout the simulations. In agreement with other authors, we find that thermohaline mixing substantially reduces the abundance of helium-3 on the upper part of the red giant branch in our lowest mass model. However, the small amount of helium-3 that remains is enough to drive thermohali…
The formation and evolution of light elements in the Universe act as important cosmological constraints. It has long been assumed that the oldest stars of the Galaxy display the primordial Li abundance in their outer layers, although studies of stellar physics have proven that this abundance must have decreased with time. The primordial Li abundance deduced from the observations of the cosmic background is larger than the maximum observed in these stars. Recent observations have given evidence of a large Li abundance dispersion in very metal-poor stars. Many of these stars are carbon-rich, the…
We show that the peculiar surface abundance patterns of Carbon Enhanced Metal Poor (CEMP) stars has been inherited from material having been processed by H- and He-burning phases in a previous generation of stars (hereafter called the ``Source Stars''). In this previous generation, some mixing must have occurred between the He- and the H-burning regions in order to explain the high observed abundances of nitrogen. In addition, it is necessary to postulate that a very small fraction of the carbon-oxygen core has been expelled (either by winds or by the supernova explosion). Therefore only the m…
The lithium abundances in a few percent of giants exceed the value predicted by the standard stellar evolution models, and the mechanisms of Li enhancement are still under debate. The Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) survey has obtained over six million spectra in the past five years, and thus provides a great opportunity to search these rare objects and to more clearly understand the mechanisms of Li enhancement. Based on the high-resolution spectrum we obtained the stellar parameters ($T_\mathrm{eff}$, $\log g$, [Fe/H]), and determined the elemental abundanc…
Context. The existence of lithium-rich low-mass red giant stars still represents a challenge for stellar evolution models. Stellar clusters are privileged environments for this kind of investigation. Aims. To investigate the chemical abundance pattern of the old open cluster Trumpler\,5, we observed a sample of four red-clump stars with high-resolution optical spectrographs. One of them (#3416) reveals extremely strong lithium lines in its spectrum. Methods. One-dimensional, local thermodynamic equilibrium analysis was performed on the spectra of the observed stars. A 3D-NLTE analysis was perf…
Carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars are believed to show the chemical imprints of more massive stars (M > 0.8 Msun) that are now extinct. In particular, it is expected that the observed abundance of Li should deviate in these stars from the standard Spite lithium plateau. We study here a sample of 11 metal-poor stars and a double-lined spectroscopic binary with -1.8 <[Fe/H]< -3.3 observed with VLT/UVES spectrograph. Among these 12 metal-poor stars, there are 8 CEMP stars for which we measure or constrain the Li abundance. In contrast to previous arguments, we demonstrate that an appropriat…
Classical Cepheids (DCEPs) are important astrophysical objects not only as standard candles in the determination of the cosmic distance ladder, but also as a testbed for the stellar evolution theory, thanks to the strict connection between their pulsation [period(s), amplitudes] and stellar (luminosity, mass, effective temperature, metallicity) parameters. We aim at unveiling the nature of the Galactic DCEP V363 Cas and other DCEPs showing cosmic abundances of lithium in their atmospheres. We have collected three epochs high-resolution spectroscopy for V363 Cas with HARPS-N@TNG. Accurate stell…
Aims: We report the discovery of a young lithium rich giant, HD 16771, in the core-helium burning phase that does not seem to fit existing proposals of Li synthesis near the luminosity function bump or during He-core flash. We aim to understand the nature of Li enrichment in the atmosphere of HD 16771 by exploring various Li enhancement scenarios. Methods: We have collected high-resolution echelle spectra of HD 16771 and derived stellar parameters and chemical abundances for 27 elements by either line equivalent widths or synthetic spectrum analyses. Results: HD 16771 is a Li-rich (log(n(Li))=…
The early Universe had a chemical composition consisting of hydrogen, helium and traces of lithium1, almost all other elements were created in stars and supernovae. The mass fraction, Z, of elements more massive than helium, is called "metallicity". A number of very metal poor stars have been found some of which, while having a low iron abundance, are rich in carbon, nitrogen and oxygen. For theoretical reasons and because of an observed absence of stars with metallicities lower than Z=1.5E-5, it has been suggested that low mass stars (M<0.8M\odot, the ones that survive to the present day) can…
Local interstellar spectra (LIS) of secondary cosmic ray (CR) nuclei, lithium, beryllium, boron, and partially secondary nitrogen, are derived in the rigidity range from 10 MV to ~200 TV using the most recent experimental results combined with the state-of-the-art models for CR propagation in the Galaxy and in the heliosphere. The lithium spectrum appears somewhat flatter at high energies compared to other secondary species that may imply a primary lithium component. Two propagation packages, GALPROP and HelMod, are combined to provide a single framework that is run to reproduce direct measure…
Swan bands - characteristic molecular absorption features of the C$_2$ molecule - are a spectroscopic signature of carbon-enhanced stars. They can also be used to identify carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars. The GALAH (GALactic Archaeology with Hermes) is a magnitude-limited survey of stars producing high-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra. We used 627,708 GALAH spectra to search for carbon-enhanced stars with a supervised and unsupervised classification algorithm, relying on the imprint of the Swan bands. We identified 918 carbon-enhanced stars, including 12 already described in th…
We present an analysis of the UVES high-resolution spectroscopic observations at the 8.2m VLT of J0023+0307, a main-sequence extremely iron-poor dwarf star. We are unable to detect iron lines in the spectrum but derive [Fe/H]<-6.1 from the Ca II resonance lines assuming [Ca/Fe]>0.40. The chemical abundance pattern of J0023+0307, with very low [Fe/Mg] and [Ca/Mg] abundance ratios, but relatively high absolute Mg and Si abundances, suggests J0023+0307 is a second generation star formed from a molecular cloud polluted by only one supernova in which the fall-back mechanism played a role. We measur…
Stellar spectral classification has been highly useful in the study of stars. While there is a currently accepted spectral classification system for carbon stars, the subset of Hydrogen-deficient Carbon (HdC) stars has not been well described by such a system, due predominantly to their rarity and their variability. Here we present the first system for the classification of HdCs based on their spectra, which is made wholly on their observable appearance. We use a combination of dimensionality reduction and clustering algorithms with human classification to create such a system with eight total…
