Many-body localization (MBL) in a one-dimensional Fermi Hubbard model with random on-site interactions is studied. While for this model all single-particle states are trivially delocalized, it is shown that for sufficiently strong disordered interactions the model is many-body localized. It is therefore argued that MBL does not necessary rely on localization of the single-particle spectrum. This model provides a convenient platform to study pure MBL phenomenology, since Anderson localization in this model does not exist. By examining various forms of the interaction term a dramatic effect of symmetries on charge transport is demonstrated. A possible realization in a cold atom experiments is proposed.
We analyze many-body localization (MBL) to delocalization transition in Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) model of Ising spin glass (SG) in the presence of a transverse field $Γ$. Based on energy resolved analysis, which is of relevance for a closed quantum system, we show that the quantum SK model has many-body mobility edges separating MBL phase which is non-ergodic and non-thermal from the delocalized phase which is ergodic and thermal. The range of the delocalized regime increases with increase in the strength of $Γ$ and eventually for $Γ$ larger than $Γ_{CP}$ the entire many-body spectrum is d…
The article reviews the physics of Anderson localization on random regular graphs (RRG) and its connections to many-body localization (MBL) in disordered interacting systems. Properties of eigenstate and energy level correlations in delocalized and localized phases, as well at criticality, are discussed. In the many-body part, models with short-range and power-law interactions are considered, as well as the quantum-dot model representing the limit of the "most long-range" interaction. Central themes -- which are common to the RRG and MBL problems -- include ergodicity of the delocalized phase,…
Dynamics of the imbalance in occupations on even and odd sites of a lattice serves as one of the key characteristics for identification of the many-body localization transition. In this work, we investigate the long-time behaviour of the imbalance in disordered one- and two-dimensional many-body systems in the regime of diffusive or subdiffusive transport. We show that memory effects originating from a coupling between slow and fast modes lead to a power-law decay of the imbalance, with the exponent determined by the diffusive (or subdiffusive) transport law and the spatial dimensionality. Localization in coupled heterogeneously disordered transport channels on the Bethe lattice
Müller,Phys. Rev.
We consider from the localization perspective the new critical phenomena discovered recently for perturbed random regular graphs (RRG) and constrained Erdős-Rényi networks (CERN) \cite{crit2}. At some critical value of the chemical potential of 3-cycles, $μ$, the network decays into the maximally possible number of almost full subgraphs, and the spectrum of the Laplacian matrix acquires the two-zonal structure with a large gap. We find that the Laplacian eigenvalue statistics corresponds to delocalized states in one zone, and to the localized states in the second one. We interpret this behavio…
We present a numerical study of Anderson localization in disordered non-Hermitian lattice models with flat bands. Specifically we consider one-dimensional stub and two-dimensional kagome lattices that have a random scalar potential and a uniform imaginary vector potential and calculate the spectra of the complex energy, the participation ratio, and the winding number as a function of the strength of the imaginary vector potential, $h$. The flat-band states are found to show a double transition from localized to delocalized and back to localized states with $h$, in contrast to the dispersive-ba…
We study the finite temperature localization transition in the spectrum of the overlap Dirac operator. Simulating the quenched approximation of QCD, we calculate the mobility edge, separating localized and delocalized modes in the spectrum. We do this at several temperatures just above the deconfining transition and by extrapolation we determine the temperature where the mobility edge vanishes and localized modes completely disappear from the spectrum. We find that this temperature, where even the lowest Dirac eigenmodes become delocalized, coincides with the critical temperature of the deconf…
In contrast with Anderson localization where a genuine localization is observed in real space, the many-body localization (MBL) problem is much less understood in the Hilbert space, support of the eigenstates. In this work, using exact diagonalization techniques we address the ergodicity properties in the underlying ${\cal{N}}$-dimensional complex networks spanned by various computational bases for up to $L=24$ spin-1/2 particles (i.e. Hilbert space of size ${\cal{N}}\simeq 2.7\,10^6$). We report fully ergodic eigenstates in the delocalized phase (irrespective of the computational basis), whil…
We study spectral and wavefunction statistics for many-body localization transition in systems with long-range interactions decaying as $1/r^α$ with an exponent $α$ satisfying $ d \le α\le 2d$, where $d$ is the spatial dimensionality. We refine earlier arguments and show that the system undergoes a localization transition as a function of the rescaled disorder $W^* = W / L^{2d-α} \ln L$, where $W$ is the disorder strength and $L$ the system size. This transition has much in common with that on random regular graphs. We further perform a detailed analysis of the inverse participation ratio (IPR…
The notion of the thermodynamic entropy in the context of quantum mechanics is a controversial topic. While there were proposals to refer von Neumann entropy as the thermodynamic entropy, it has it's own limitations. The observational entropy has been developed as a generalization of Boltzmann entropy, and it is presently one of the most promising candidates to provide a clear and well-defined understanding of the thermodynamic entropy in quantum mechanics. In this work, we study the behaviour of the observational entropy in the context of localization-delocalization transition for one-dimensi…
We investigate the localization properties of driven models that exhibit a sub-extensive number of extended states in the static setting. We consider instances where the extended modes are or are not protected by topological considerations. To this end, we contrast the strongly driven disordered lowest Landau level, which we refer to as the random Landau model (RLM), with the random dimer model (RDM); the latter also has a sub-extensive set of delocalized modes in the middle of the spectrum whose origin is not topological. We map the driven models on to a higher dimensional effective model and…
In two dimensions (2D), dephasing by a bath cuts off Anderson localization that would otherwise occur at any energy density for fermions with disorder. For an isolated system with short-range interactions, the system can be its own bath, exhibiting diffusive (non-Markovian) thermal density fluctuations. We recast the dephasing of weak localization due to a diffusive bath as a self-interacting polymer loop. We investigate the critical behavior of the loop in $d=4-ε$ dimensions, and find a nontrivial fixed point corresponding to a temperature $T^* \sim ε>0$ where the dephasing time diverges. Ass…
We analyze the localization properties of the disordered Hubbard model in the presence of a synthetic magnetic field. An analysis of level spacing ratio shows a clear transition from ergodic to many-body localized phase. The transition shifts to larger disorder strengths with increasing magnetic flux. Study of dynamics of local correlations and entanglement entropy indicates that charge excitations remain localized whereas spin degree of freedom gets delocalized in the presence of the synthetic flux. This residual ergodicity is enhanced by the presence of the magnetic field with dynamical obse…
We compare accuracy of two prime time evolution algorithms involving Matrix Product States - tDMRG (time-dependent density matrix renormalization group) and TDVP (time-dependent variational principle). The latter is supposed to be superior within a limited and fixed auxiliary space dimension. Surprisingly, we find that the performance of algorithms depends on the model considered. In particular, many-body localized systems as well as the crossover regions between localized and delocalized phases are better described by tDMRG, contrary to the delocalized regime where TDVP indeed outperforms tDM…
In this work we study the spectral properties of the adjacency matrix of critical Erdös-Rényi (ER) graphs, i.e. when the average degree is of order \log N. In a series of recent inspiring papers Alt, Ducatez, and Knowles have rigorously shown that these systems exhibit a "semilocalized" phase in the tails of the spectrum where the eigenvectors are exponentially localized on a sub-extensive set of nodes with anomalously large degree. We propose two approximate analytical strategies to analyze this regime based respectively on the simple "rules of thumb" for localization and ergodicity and on an…
This work is a generic advance in the study of delocalized (ergodic) to localized (non-ergodic) wave propagation phenomena in the presence of disorder. There is an urgent need to better understand the physics of extreme value process in the context of contemporary climate change. For earth system climate analysis General Circulation Model simulation sizes are rather small, 10 to 50 ensemble members due to computational burden while large ensembles are intrinsic to the study of Anderson localization. We merge universal transport approaches of Random Matrix Theory (RMT), described by the charact…
Characterizing the many-body localization (MBL) transition in strongly disordered and interacting quantum systems is an important issue in the field of condensed matter physics. We study the single particle Green's functions for a disordered interacting system in one dimension using exact diagnonalization in the infinite temperature limit and provide strong evidence that single particle excitations carry signatures of delocalization to MBL transition. In the delocalized phase, the typical values of the local density of states and the scattering rate are finite while in the MBL phase, the typic…
We study many-body localization for a disordered chain of spin 1/2 fermions. In [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{94}, 241104 (2016)], when both down and up components are exposed to the same strong disorder, the authors observe a power law growth of the entanglement entropy that suggests that many-body localization is not complete; the density (charge) degree of freedom is localized, while the spin degree of freedom is apparently delocalized. We show that this power-like behavior is only a transient effect and that, for longer times, the growth is logarithmic in time suggesting that the spin degree of fr…
A number of experimental platforms for quantum simulations of disordered quantum matter, from dipolar systems to trapped ions, involve degrees of freedom which are coupled by power-law decaying hoppings or interactions, yet the interplay of disorder and interactions in these systems is far less understood than in their short-ranged counterpart. Here we consider a prototype model of interacting fermions with disordered long-ranged hoppings and interactions, and use the flow equation approach to map out its dynamical phase diagram as a function of hopping and interaction exponents. We demonstrat…
We demonstrate many-body localization (MBL) transition in a one-dimensional isotropic XY chain with a weak next-nearest-neighbor frustration in a random magnetic field. We perform finite-size exact diagonalization calculations of level-spacing statistics and fractal dimensions to characterize the MBL transition with increasing the random field amplitude. An equivalent representation of the model in terms of spinless fermions explains the presence of the delocalized phase by the appearance of an effective non-local interaction between the fermions. This interaction appears due to frustration pr…
Disordered quantum systems undergoing a many-body localization (MBL) transition fail to reach thermal equilibrium under their own dynamics. Distinguishing between asymptotically localized or delocalized dynamics based on numerical results is however nontrivial due to finite-size effects. Numerical linked cluster expansions (NLCE) provide a means to tackle quantum systems directly in the thermodynamic limit, but are challenging for models without translational invariance. Here, we demonstrate that NLCE provide a powerful tool to explore MBL by simulating quench dynamics in disordered spin-$1/2$…
We show that the presence of a harmonic trap may in itself lead to many-body localization for cold atoms confined in that trap in a quasi-one-dimensional geometry. Specifically, the coexistence of delocalized phase in the center of the trap with localized region closer to the edges is predicted with the borderline dependent on the curvature of the trap. The phenomenon, similar in its origin to Stark localization, should be directly observed with cold atomic species. We discuss both the spinless and the spinful fermions, for the latter we address Stark localization at the same time as it has no…
The tripartite information is an observable-independent measure for scrambling and delocalization of information. Therefore one can expect that the tripartite information is a good observable-independent indicator for distinguishing between many-body localized and delocalized regimes, which we confirm for the XXZ-chain in a random field. Specifically, we find that the tripartite information signal spreads inside a lightcone that only grows logarithmically in time in the many-body localized regime similar to the entanglement entropy. We also find that the tripartite information eventually reach…
We study the many-body localization (MBL) properties of a chain of interacting fermions subject to a quasiperiodic potential such that the non-interacting chain is always delocalized and displays multifractality. Contrary to naive expectations, adding interactions in this systems does not enhance delocalization, and a MBL transition is observed. Due to the local properties of the quasiperiodic potential, the MBL phase presents specific features, such as additional peaks in the density distribution. We furthermore investigate the fate of multifractality in the ergodic phase for low potential va…
Non-interacting fermions in one dimension can undergo a localization-delocalization transition in the presence of a quasi-periodic potential as a function of that potential. In the presence of interactions, this transition transforms into a Many-Body Localization (MBL) transition. Recent studies have suggested that this type of transition can also occur in models with quasi-periodic potentials that possess single particle mobility edges. Two such models were studied in PRL 115,230401(2015) but only one was found to exhibit an MBL transition in the presence of interactions while the other one d…
We study the Anderson-like localization transition in the spectrum of the Dirac operator of quenched QCD. Above the deconfining transition we determine the temperature dependence of the mobility edge separating localized and delocalized eigenmodes in the spectrum. We show that the temperature where the mobility edge vanishes and localized modes disappear from the spectrum, coincides with the critical temperature of the deconfining transition. We also identify topological charge related close to zero modes in the Dirac spectrum and show that they account for only a small fraction of localized m…
The Anderson transition in random graphs has raised great interest, partly because of its analogy with the many-body localization (MBL) transition. Unlike the latter, many results for random graphs are now well established, in particular the existence and precise value of a critical disorder separating a localized from an ergodic delocalized phase. However, the renormalization group flow and the nature of the transition are not well understood. In turn, recent works on the MBL transition have made the remarkable prediction that the flow is of Kosterlitz-Thouless type. Here we show that the And…
