A number of experimental platforms for quantum simulations of disordered quantum matter, from dipolar systems to trapped ions, involve degrees of freedom which are coupled by power-law decaying hoppings or interactions, yet the interplay of disorder and interactions in these systems is far less understood than in their short-ranged counterpart. Here we consider a prototype model of interacting fermions with disordered long-ranged hoppings and interactions, and use the flow equation approach to map out its dynamical phase diagram as a function of hopping and interaction exponents. We demonstrate that the flow equation technique is ideally suited to problems involving long-range couplings due to its ability to accurately simulate very large system sizes. We show that, at large on-site disorder and for short-range interactions, a transition from a delocalized phase to a quasi many-body localized (MBL) phase exists as the hopping range is decreased. This quasi-MBL phase is characterized by intriguing properties such as a set of emergent conserved quantities which decay algebraically with distance. Surprisingly we find that a crossover between delocalized and quasi-MBL phases survives even in the presence of long-range interactions.
We study effects of disorder on eigenstates of 1D two-component fermions with infinitely strong Hubbard repulsion. We demonstrate that the spin-independent (potential) disorder reduces the problem to the one-particle Anderson localization taking place at arbitrarily weak disorder. In contrast, a random magnetic field can cause reentrant many-body localization-delocalization transitions. Surprisingly weak magnetic field destroys one-particle localization caused by not too strong potential disorder, whereas at much stronger fields the states are many-body localized. We present numerical support …
In this work we demonstrate that non-random mechanisms that lead to single-particle localization may also lead to many-body localization, even in the absence of disorder. In particular, we consider interacting spins and fermions in the presence of a linear potential. In the non-interacting limit, these models show the well known Wannier-Stark localization. We analyze the fate of this localization in the presence of interactions. Remarkably, we find that beyond a critical value of the potential gradient, these models exhibit non-ergodic behavior as indicated by their spectral and dynamical prop…
In two dimensional disordered lattices, presence of interaction makes particles less localized than the non-interacting ones within the range of disorder strength $W \le 4$ and interaction strength $V \le 4$. If the interaction strength is higher, then particles localize more. Although, a localization- delocalization transition is not found, a transition with changes in the dominant correlations is observed. The nature of correlations between the particles as nearest neighbors become dominant beyond certain disorder strengths.
We study the interplay of two interacting discrete time quantum walks in the presence of disorder. Each walk is described by a Floquet unitary map defined on a chain of two-level systems. Strong disorder induces a novel Anderson localization phase with a gapless Floquet spectrum and one unique localization length $ξ_1$ for all eigenstates for noninteracting walks. We add a local contact interaction which is parametrized by a phase shift $γ$. A wave packet is spreading subdiffusively beyond the bounds set by $ξ_1$ and saturates at a new length scale $ξ_2 \gg ξ_1$. In particular we find $ξ_2 \si…
We numerically explore $\mathbb Z_2$-symmetric random interacting Ising-Majorana chains at high energy. A very rich phase diagram emerges with two topologically distinct many-body localization (MBL) regimes separated by a much broader thermal phase than previously found. This is a striking consequence of the avalanche theory. We further find MBL spin-glass order always associated to a many-body spectral pairing, presumably signaling a strong zero mode operator which opens fascinating perspectives for MBL-protected topological qubits.
The quantum kicked rotor is well-known to display dynamical localization in the non-interacting limit. In the interacting case, while the mean-field (Gross-Pitaevskii) approximation displays a destruction of dynamical localization, its fate remains debated beyond mean-field. Here we study the kicked Lieb-Liniger model in the few-body limit. We show that for any interaction strength, two kicked interacting bosons always dynamically localize, in the sense that the energy of the system saturates at long time. However, contrary to the non-interacting limit, the momentum distribution $Π(k)$ of the …
We study a driven, spin-orbit coupled fermionic system in a lattice at the resonant regime where the drive frequency equals the Hubbard repulsion, for which non-trivial constrained dynamics emerge at fast timescales. An effective density-dependent tunneling model is derived, and examined in the sparse filling regime in 1D. The system exhibits entropic self-localization, where while even numbers of atoms propagate ballistically, odd numbers form localized bound states induced by an effective attraction from a higher configurational entropy. These phenomena occur in the strong coupling limit whe…
We study the (de)localization phenomena of one-component lattice fermions in spin backgrounds. The O(3) classical spin variables on sites fluctuate thermally through the ordinary nearest-neighbor coupling. Their complex two-component (CP$^1$-Schwinger boson) representation forms a composite U(1) gauge field on bond, which acts on fermions as a fluctuating hopping amplitude in a gauge invariant manner. For the case of antiferromagnetic (AF) spin coupling, the model has close relationship with the $t$-$J$ model of strongly-correlated electron systems. We measure the unfolded level spacing distri…
We study the finite temperature localization transition in the spectrum of the overlap Dirac operator. Simulating the quenched approximation of QCD, we calculate the mobility edge, separating localized and delocalized modes in the spectrum. We do this at several temperatures just above the deconfining transition and by extrapolation we determine the temperature where the mobility edge vanishes and localized modes completely disappear from the spectrum. We find that this temperature, where even the lowest Dirac eigenmodes become delocalized, coincides with the critical temperature of the deconf…
It is by now well established that Dirac fermions coupled to non-Abelian gauge theories can undergo an Anderson-type localization transition. This transition affects eigenmodes in the lowest part of the Dirac spectrum, the ones most relevant to the low-energy physics of these models. Here we review several aspects of this phenomenon, mostly using the tools of lattice gauge theory. In particular, we discuss how the transition is related to the finite-temperature transitions leading to the deconfinement of fermions, as well as to the restoration of chiral symmetry that is spontaneously broken at…
We study the localization-driven correlated states among two isolated dirty interacting helical edges as realized at the boundaries of two-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological insulators. We show that an interplay of time-reversal symmetric disorder and strong interedge interactions generically drives the entire system to a gapless localized state, preempting all other intraedge instabilities. For weaker interactions, an antisymmetric interlocked fluid, causing a negative perfect drag, can emerge from dirty edges with different densities. We also find that the interlocked fluid states of hel…
Many-body localization (MBL) features are studied here for a large spin chain model with long range interactions. The model corresponds to cold atoms placed inside a cavity and driven by an external laser field with long range interactions coming from rescattering of cavity photons. Earlier studies were limited to small sizes amenable to exact diagonalization. It is shown that nonergodic features and MBL may exist in this model for random disorder as well as in the presence of tilted potential on experimental time scales also for experimentally relevant system sizes using tensor networks algor…
