We investigate similarity classes of arithmetic lattices in the plane. We introduce a natural height function on the set of such similarity classes, and give asymptotic estimates on the number of all arithmetic similarity classes, semi-stable arithmetic similarity classes, and well-rounded arithmetic similarity classes of bounded height as the bound tends to infinity. We also briefly discuss some properties of the $j$-invariant corresponding to similarity classes of planar lattices.
The main purpose of this paper is to give an explicit formula for the volumes of indefinite ternary lattices with square free discriminant. We also consider several examples of lattices, for which the fundamental domain is well-known and make sure the results obtained by our computation coincide with the known ones.
This is a survey article on the theory of lattice points in large planar domains and bodies of dimensions 3 and higher, with an emphasis on recent developments and new methods, including a lot of results established only during the last few years. It deals with the classic circle and sphere problems, as well as with the present state-of-the-art concerning lattice points in more general regions and bodies. Furthermore, a thorough account is given on divisor problems and related arithmetic functions.
We investigate the properties of the zeta-function of well-rounded sublattices of a fixed arithmetic lattice in the plane. In particular, we show that this function has abscissa of convergence at $s=1$ with a real pole of order 2, improving upon a recent result of S. Kuehnlein. We use this result to show that the number of well-rounded sublattices of a planar arithmetic lattice of index less or equal $N$ is $O(N \log N)$ as $N \to \infty$. To obtain these results, we produce a description of integral well-rounded sublattices of a fixed planar integral well-rounded lattice and investigate conve…
In [3] L.Zapponi studied the arithmetic of plane bipartite trees with prime number of edges. He obtained a lower bound on the degree of tree's definition field. Here we obtain a similar lower bound in the following case. There exists a prime number $p$ such, that: a) the number of edges is divisible by $p$, but not by $p^2$; b) for any proper subset of the set of white (or black) vertices the sum of their degrees is not divisible by this $p$.
We consider a random Gaussian ensemble of Laplace eigenfunctions on the 3D torus, and investigate the 1-dimensional Hausdorff measure (`length') of nodal intersections against a smooth 2-dimensional toral sub-manifold (`surface'). The expected length is universally proportional to the area of the reference surface, times the wavenumber, independent of the geometry. For surfaces contained in a plane, we give an upper bound for the nodal intersection length variance, depending on the arithmetic properties of the plane. The bound is established via estimates on the number of lattice points in spe…
Given a smooth plane quartic curve C over a field k of characteristic 0, with Jacobian variety J, and a marked rational point P of C(k), we construct a reductive group G and a G-variety X, together with an injection J(k)/2J(k) -> G(k)\X(k). We do this using the Mumford theta group of J, and a construction of Lurie which passes from Heisenberg groups to Lie algebras.
Under hypotheses required for the Taylor-Wiles method, we prove for forms of $U(3)$ which are compact at infinity that the lattice structure on upper alcove algebraic vectors or on principal series types given by the $λ$-isotypic part of completed cohomology is a local invariant of the Galois representation attached to $λ$ when this Galois representation is residually irreducible locally at places dividing $p$. As a crucial input, we establish corresponding mod $p$ multiplicity one results. Our main innovation is the combination of integral Hecke theory and the Taylor--Wiles method.
Let $X(D,1) =Γ(D,1) \backslash \mathbb{H}$ denote the Shimura curve of level $N=1$ arising from an indefinite quaternion algebra of fixed discriminant $D$. We study the discrete average of the error term in the hyperbolic circle problem over Heegner points of discriminant $d <0$ on $X(D,1)$ as $d \to -\infty$. We prove that if $|d|$ is sufficiently large compared to the radius $r \approx \log X$ of the circle, we can improve on the classical $O(X^{2/3})$-bound of Selberg. Our result extends the result of Petridis and Risager for the modular surface to arithmetic compact Riemann surfaces.
We prove an identity for five arguments, valid in the lattice of natural numbers with gcd and lcm as lattice operations. More generally, this identity characterizes arbitrary distributive lattices. Fixing three of the five arguments, we always get associative products, and thus every distributive lattice carries many semigroup structures. In the arithmetic case, we explicitly compute multiplication tables of such semigroups and describe some of their properties. Many of them are periodic, and can be seen as "non-commutative analogs" of the rings Z/nZ.
Rudin conjectured that there are never more than c N^(1/2) squares in an arithmetic progression of length N. Motivated by this surprisingly difficult problem we formulate more than twenty conjectures in harmonic analysis, analytic number theory, arithmetic geometry, discrete geometry and additive combinatorics (some old and some new) which each, if true, would shed light on Rudin's conjecture.
We prove that the covolume of any quasi-arithmetic hyperbolic lattice (a notion that generalizes the definition of arithmetic subgroups) is a rational multiple of the covolume of an arithmetic subgroup. As a corollary, we obtain a good description for the shape of the volumes of most of the known hyperbolic n-manifolds with n>3.
Using a variant of an unpublished argument due to Agol, we show that an irreducible right-angled Coxeter group on ${n \geq 3}$ vertices embeds as a thin subgroup of a uniform arithmetic lattice in an indefinite orthogonal group $\mathrm{O}(p, q)$ for some $p, q \geq 1$ satisfying $p+q=n$.
We consider moduli spaces of plane quartics marked with various structures such as Cayley octads, Aronhold heptads, Steiner complexes and Göpel subsets and determine their cohomology. This answers a series of questions of Jesse Wolfson. We also explore some arithmetic applications over finite fields.
In this monograph, we lay some foundations of a theory of infinite dimensional Euclidean lattices - and more generally, of infinite dimensional Hermitian vector bundles over some "arithmetic curve" ${\rm Spec}\,\mathcal{O}_K$ attached to the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$ of some number field $K$ - with a view towards applications to transcendence theory and Diophantine geometry. In the first chapters of this monograph, we study the properties of the invariant $h^0_θ(\overline{E})$ attached to some Euclidean lattice $\overline{E}:= (E, \Vert.\Vert)$, defined by the expression $$h^0_θ(\overli…
We construct explicit examples of E_8 lattices occurring in arithmetic for which the natural Galois action is equal to the full group of automorphisms of the lattice, i.e., the Weyl group of E_8. In particular, we give explicit elliptic curves over Q(t) whose Mordell-Weil lattices are isomorphic to E_8 and have maximal Galois action. Our main objects of study are del Pezzo surfaces of degree 1 over number fields. The geometric Picard group, considered as a lattice via the negative of the intersection pairing, contains a sublattice isomorphic to E_8. We construct examples of such surfaces for w…
We study upper bounds for the torsion in homology of nonuniform arithmetic lattices. Together with recent results of Calegari-Venkatesh, this can be used to obtain upper bounds on K2 of the ring of integers of totally imaginary fields.
We use lattice theory to study the isogeny class of a K3 surface. Starting from isotropic Brauer classes, we construct isogenies via Kneser method of neighboring lattices. We also determine the fields of definition of isogenous K3 surfaces, and study Kneser construction over number fields. We then apply our results to relate conjectures about the finiteness of Brauer groups and Néron-Severi lattices of K3 surfaces.
A result of Belyi can be stated as follows. Every curve defined over a number field can be expressed as a cover of the projective line with branch locus contained in a rigid divisor. We define the notion of geometrically rigid divisors in surfaces and then show that every surface defined over a number field can be expressed as a cover of the projective plane with branch locus contained in a geometrically rigid divisor in the plane. The main result is the characterisation of arithmetically defined divisors in the plane as geometrically rigid divisors in the plane.
We construct a torsion-free arithmetic lattice in $\mathrm{PGL}_2(\mathbb{F}_2(\!(t)\!))\times\mathrm{PGL}_2(\mathbb{F}_2(\!(t)\!))$ arising from a quaternion algebra over $\mathbb{F}_2(z)$. It is the fundamental group of a square complex with universal covering $T_3\times T_3$, a product of trees with constant valency $3$, which has minimal Euler characteristic. Furthermore, our lattice gives rise to a fake quadric over $\mathbb{F}_2(\!(t)\!)$ by means of non-archimedean uniformization.
This paper concerns the lattice $L_n$ of subsets of $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ that are arithmetic progressions, under the inclusion order. For $n\geq 4$, this poset is not graded and thus not semimodular. We give three independent proofs of the fact that for $n\geq 2$, $μ_n(L_n) = μ(n-1)$, where $μ_n$ is the Möbius function of $L_n$ and $μ$ is the classical (number-theoretic) Möbius function. We also show that $L_n$ is comodernistic, which implies that $L_n$ is EL-labelable. Comodernism is then used to prove that the order complex $Δ_n$ of the lattice is either contractible or homotopy equivalent to a …
We study the arithmetic (geometric) progressions in the $x$-coordinates of quadratic points on smooth projective planar curves defined over a number field $k$. Unless the curve is hyperelliptic, we prove that these progressions must be finite. We, moreover, show that the arithmetic gonality of the curve determines the infinitude of these progressions in the set of $\overline{k}$-points with field of definition of degree at most $n$, $n\ge 3$.
We give estimates on the number $AL_H(x)$ of arithmetic lattices $Γ$ of covolume at most $x$ in a simple Lie group $H$. In particular, we obtain a first concrete estimate on the number of arithmetic 3-manifolds of volume at most $x$. Our main result is for the classical case $H=PSL(2,R)$ where we compute the limit of $\log AL_H(x) / x\log x$ when $x\to\infty$. The proofs use several different techniques: geometric (bounding the number of generators of $Γ$ as a function of its covolume), number theoretic (bounding the number of maximal such $Γ$) and sharp estimates on the character values of th…
We describe a general algorithm for computing intersection pairings on arithmetic surfaces. We have implemented our algorithm for curves over $\mathbb Q$, and we show how to use it to compute regulators for a number of Jacobians of smooth plane quartics, and to numerically verify the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer for the Jacobian of the split Cartan curve of level 13, up to squares.
The theory of Ihara zeta functions is extended to non-compact arithmetic quotients of Bruhat-Tits trees. This new zeta function turns out to be a rational function, despite the infinite-dimensional setting. In general it has zeros and poles, in contrast to the compact case. The determinant formulas of Bass and Ihara hold true if one defines the determinant as limit of all finite principal minors. From this analysis, a prime geodesic theorem is derived, which, applied to special arithmetic groups, yields new asymptotic assertions on class numbers of orders in global fields.
Gopal Prasad and A. S. Rapinchuk defined a notion of weakly commensurable lattices in a semisimple group, and gave a classification of weakly commensurable Zariski dense subgroups. A motivation was to classify pairs of locally symmetric spaces isospectral with respect to the Laplacian on functions. For this, in higher ranks, they assume the validity of Schanuel's conjecture. In this note, we observe that if we use the stronger notion of representation equivalence of lattices, then Schanuel's conjecture can be avoided. Further, the results are also applicable in a $S$-arithmetic setting. We als…
We relate the singularities of a scheme $X$ to the asymptotics of the number of points of $X$ over finite rings. This gives a partial answer to a question of Mustata. We use this result to count representations of arithmetic lattices. More precisely, if $Γ$ is an arithmetic lattice whose $\mathbb{Q}$-rank is greater than one, let $r_n(Γ)$ be the number of irreducible $n$-dimensional representations of $Γ$ up to isomorphism. We prove that there is a constant $C$ (for example, $C=746$ suffices) such that $r_n(Γ)=O(n^C)$ for every such $Γ$. This answers a question of Larsen and Lubotzky.
Arithmetic Kleinian groups are arithmetic lattices in PSL_2(C). We present an algorithm which, given such a group Gamma, returns a fundamental domain and a finite presentation for Gamma with a computable isomorphism.
This paper studies the covolumes of nonuniform arithmetic lattices in PU(n, 1). We determine the smallest covolume nonuniform arithmetic lattices for each n, the number of minimal covolume lattices for each n, and study the growth of the minimal covolume as n varies. In particular, there is a unique lattice (up to conjugacy) in PU(9, 1) of smallest Euler--Poincaré characteristic amongst all nonuniform arithmetic lattices in PU(n, 1). We also show that for each even n, there are arbitrarily large families of nonisomorphic maximal nonuniform lattices in PU(n, 1) of equal covolume.
We introduce geometric and homological finiteness properties for countable approximate groups via coarse geometry and then study these finiteness properties for S-arithmetic reductive approximate groups. For S-arithmetic approximate groups without infinite places we show that the finiteness length is finite and compute this finiteness length explicitly. In the simple case it is one less than the sum of the local ranks. This extends the Rank Theorem of Bux, Köhl and the second author from positive characteristic to characteristic zero. Our proof is based on a geometric version of their proof, b…
We introduce and motivate a notion of pseudo-arithmeticity, which possibly applies to all lattices in $\mathrm{PO}(n,1)$ with $n>3$. We further show that under an additional assumption (satisfied in all known cases), the covolumes of these lattices correspond to rational linear combinations of special values of $L$-functions.
This paper studies the arithmetic of the extremal elliptic K3 surface with configuration of singular fibres [19,1,1,1,1,1]. We give a model over Q such that the Neron Severi group is generated by divisors over Q, and we describe the local Hasse-Weil zeta-functions in terms of a modular form of weight 3. Furthermore we verify the Tate conjecture for the reduction at 3 and comment on a conjecture of T. Shioda concerning the similarity of the lattice of transcendental cycles and a lattice resulting from supersingular reduction.
Given a curve of genus 3 with an unramified double cover, we give an explicit description of the associated Prym-variety. We also describe how an unramified double cover of a non-hyperelliptic genus 3 curve can be mapped into the Jacobian of a curve of genus 2 over its field of definition and how this can be used to do Chabauty- and Brauer-Manin type calculations for curves of genus 5 with an unramified involution. As an application, we determine the rational points on a smooth plane quartic with no particular geometric properties and give examples of curves of genus 3 and 5 violating the Hass…
We generalize a result of Sury and prove that uniform discreteness of cocompact lattices in higher rank semisimple Lie groups (first conjectured by Margulis) is equivalent to a weak form of Lehmer's conjecture. We include a short survey of related results and conjectures.
For a prime $p$, we study subgroups of order p of the Brauer group Br(S) of a general complex polarized K3 surface of degree 2d, generalizing earlier work of van Geemen. These groups correspond to sublattices of index p of the transcendental lattice T_S of S; we classify these lattices up to isomorphism using Nikulin's discriminant form technique. We then study geometric realizations of p-torsion Brauer elements as Brauer-Severi varieties in a few cases via projective duality. We use one of these constructions for an arithmetic application, giving new kinds of counter-examples to weak approxim…
Let k be a global field and let k_v be the completion of k with respect to v, a non-archimedean place of k. Let \mathbf{G} be a connected, simply-connected algebraic group over k, which is absolutely almost simple of k_v-rank 1. Let G=\mathbf{G}(k_v). Let Γbe an arithmetic lattice in G and let C=C(Γ) be its congruence kernel. Lubotzky has shown that C is infinite, confirming an earlier conjecture of Serre. Here we provide complete solution of the congruence subgroup problem for \Gamm$ by determining the structure of C. It is shown that C is a free profinite product, one of whose factors is \ha…
We consider zeta functions: $Z(f ;P ;s)=\sum_{\m \in \N^{n}} f(m_1,..., m_n) P(m_1,..., m_n)^{-s/d}$ where $P \in \R [X_1,..., X_n]$ has degree $d$ and $f$ is a function arithmetic in origin, e.g. a multiplicative function. In this paper, I study the meromorphic continuation of such series beyond an a priori domain of absolute convergence when $f$ and $P$ satisfy properties one typically meets in applications. As a result, I prove an explicit asymptotic for a general class of lattice point problems subject to arithmetic constraints.
In this paper we produce many examples of thin subgroups of special linear groups that are isomorphic to the fundamental groups of non-arithmetic hyperbolic manifolds. Specifically, we show that the non-arithmetic lattices in $\mathrm{SO}(n,1)$ constructed by Gromov and Piatetski-Shapiro can be embedded into $\mathrm{SL}_{n+1}(\mathbb{R})$ so that their images are thin subgroups
We define and investigate extension groups in the context of Arakelov geometry. The 'arithmetic extension groups' we introduce are extensions by groups of analytic types of the usual extension groups attached to $Ø_X$-modules over an arithmetic scheme $X$. In this paper, we focus on the first arithmetic extension group - the elements of which may be described in terms of admissible short exact sequences of hermitian vector bundles over $X$ - and we especially consider the case when $X$ is an 'arithmetic curve', namely the spectrum $\Spec Ø_K$ of the ring of integers in some number field $K$. T…

We prove that cocompact arithmetic lattices in a simple Lie group are uniformly discrete if and only if the Salem numbers are uniformly bounded away from $1$. We also prove an analogous result for semisimple Lie groups. Finally, we shed some light on the structure of the bottom of the length spectrum of an arithmetic orbifold $Γ\backslash X$ by showing the existence of a positive constant $δ(X)>0$ such that squares of lengths of closed geodesics shorter than $δ$ must be pairwise linearly dependent over $\mathbb Q$.
We study dynamics of the Lattès maps in the complex plane in terms of the Cuntz-Krieger algebras associated to the endomorphisms of the non-commutative tori. In particular, it is shown that iterations of the Lattès maps can be reduced to the dynamics of the subshifts of finite type. Using such a reduction, we calculate the zeta function of the Lattès maps.
This is the first installment of a paper in three parts, where we use noncommutative geometry to study the space of commensurability classes of Q-lattices and we show that the arithmetic properties of KMS states in the corresponding quantum statistical mechanical system, the theory of modular Hecke algebras, and the spectral realization of zeros of L-functions are part of a unique general picture. In this first chapter we give a complete description of the multiple phase transitions and arithmetic spontaneous symmetry breaking in dimension two. The system at zero temperature settles onto a cla…
