We report the numerical solutions of the system of equations, which describes the electrodynamics of s-wave superconductors, for time independent fields and half-plane superconductor geometry. The results are: i)the applied magnetic field increases the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) coherence length and suppresses the superconductivity, ii)the applied electric field decreases GL coherence length and supports the superconductivity, iii) if the applied magnetic field is fixed and the applied electric field increases the London penetration depth of the magnetic field decreases. The main conclusion is that applying electric field at very low temperature one increases the critical magnetic field. This result is experimentally testable.
Using the self-consistent approximation we calculate conductivity in an anisotropic heterogeneous media with superconducting inclusions and compare the results with those obtained previously using the Maxwell approximation and with available experimental data on excess conductivity above $ T_c= $~8K in FeSe. Advantages and drawbacks of these two approximations are discussed. The obtained analytical formulas can be applied to various other anisotropic heterogeneous superconductors, including high-Tc layered superconductors.
Based on an analytic scheme and neglecting the back reaction effect several crucial properties of holographic $ s $- wave superconductors have been investigated in the presence of an external magnetic field in the background of a $ D $ dimensional Schwarzschild AdS space time. Inspired by low energy limit of heterotic string theory, in the present paper we replace the conventional Maxwell action by a Power Maxwell action. Immersing the holographic superconductors in an external static magnetic field the spatially dependent condensate solutions have been obtained analytically. Interestingly eno…
Although the diamagnetism is of the essence in the superconducting phenomena, small enough topological (or unconventional) superconductors are paramagnetic. By solving the quasiclassical Eilenberger equation and the Maxwell equation self-consistently in two-dimensional disks, we theoretically study the response of small superconductors to weak magnetic field. Because of the topologically nontrivial character of the wave function, the unconventional superconductor hosts the zero-energy surface Andreev bound states which always accompany the odd-frequency Cooper pairs. The paramagnetic property …
We study the behaviour of a superconductor in a weak static gravitational field for temperatures slightly greater than its transition temperature (fluctuation regime). Making use of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations, we find a possible short time alteration of the static gravitational field in the vicinity of the superconductor, providing also a qualitative behaviour in the weak field condition. Finally, we compare the behaviour of various superconducting materials, investigating which parameters could enhance the gravitational field alteration.
In recent years, the $H$ formulation of Maxwell's equation has become the de facto standard for simulating the time-dependent electromagnetic behavior of superconducting applications with commercial software. However, there are cases where other formulations are desirable, for example for modeling superconducting turns in electrical machines or situations where the superconductor is better described by the critical state than by a power-law resistivity. In order to accurately and efficiently handle those situations, here we consider two published approaches based on the magnetic vector potenti…
Cloaking of static magnetic fields by a finite thickness type-II superconductor tube surrounded by a coaxial paramagnet shell is studied. On the basis of exact solutions to the London and Maxwell equations, it is shown that perfect cloaking is realizable for arbitrary geometrical parameters including the thin film case for both constituents. In contrast to previous approximate studies assuming perfect diamagnetism of the superconductor constituent, it is proven that cloaking provides simultaneously full undetectability, that is the magnetic moment of the structure completely vanishes as well a…
The electrostatic potential in a superconductor is studied. To this end Bardeen's extension of the Ginzburg-Landau theory to low temperatures is used to derive three Ginzburg-Landau equations - the Maxwell equation for the vector potential, the Schroedinger equation for the wave function and the Poisson equation for the electrostatic potential. The electrostatic and the thermodynamic potential compensate each other to a great extent resulting into an effective potential acting on the superconducting condensate. For the Abrikosov vortex lattice in Niobium, numerical solutions are presented and …
In this paper, based on analytic technique, several properties of holographic $ s $-wave superconductors have been investigated in the presence of various higher derivative (\textit{non linear}) corrections to the usual Maxwell action. Explicit expressions for the critical temperature and the condensation values have been obtained in the probe limit. Finally, the nature of condensate solutions have been investigated by immersing the superconductor in an external magnetic field. It is found that below certain critical magnetic field strength ($ B_c $) there exists a superconducting phase. Most …
We consider the Maxwell-London electrodynamics of three dimensional superconductors in p-wave pairing states with nodal points or lines in the energy gap. The current-velocity relation is then nonlinear in the applied field, cubic for point nodes and quadratic for lines. We obtain explicit angular and depth dependent expressions for measurable quantities such as the transverse magnetic moment, and associated torque. These dependences are different for point and line nodes and can be used to distinguish between different order parameters. We discuss the experimental feasibility of this method, …
We study vortex penetration into two-layer structures of superconducting plates under a perpendicular magnetic field. We solve the heat transport equation and the Maxwell equations with the current-voltage relation for superconductor, simultaneously, and obtain magnetic flux and current densities. We show how magnetic flux structure depends on the structure, especially distance of two-layer of superconductors.
We investigate the magnetic field distribution inside a Type II superconductor which has point group symmetry $O$ such as Li$_2$Pt$_3$B. The absence of inversion symmetry as a departure from perfect cubic group $O_h$ causes a magnetization collinear with the phase gradient associated with the order parameter, and a component of current collinear with the local magnetic field. In the vortex state, we predict, by solving the Maxwell equation, a local magnetic field transverse to the vortex lines. The probability distribution of this transverse field is also obtained for the prospective muon-spin…
The Meissner effect is studied by using an approach based on Newton and Maxwell's equations. The objective is to assess the relevance of London's equation and shed light on the connection between the Meissner and skin effects. The properties of a superconducting cylinder, cooled in a magnetic field, are accounted for within the same framework. The radial Hall effect is predicted. The energy, associated with the Meissner effect, is calculated and compared with the binding energy of the superconducting phase with respect to the normal one.
Using the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation with the complex relaxation time and the Maxwell equation, we systematically examine transverse motion of vortex dynamics in the presence of pinning disorders. Consequently, in a plastic flow phase in which moving and pinned vortices coexist, we find that the Hall voltage generally changes its sign. The origin of the sign change is ascribed to a fact that moving vortices are strongly drifted by circular current of pinned vortices and the enforced transverse moving direction becomes opposite to that by transport current. This suggests that the H…
A theoretical study of dynamics of small thermal and electromagnetic perturbations in type-II superconductors in the flux creep regime with a nonlinear current-voltage characteristics is performed. For this purpose, the space-time evolution of temperature and electric field was calculated using the heat diffusion equation, coupled with Maxwell's equations and material law, assuming that the applied magnetic field is directed parallel to the surface of the sample. A threshold field $B_j$ for the occurrence of thermomagnetic instability has been found assuming that the heat flux diffusion is con…
Cloaking of static magnetic fields by a finite thickness type-II superconductor tube being in the full critical state and surrounded by a coaxial paramagnet shell is studied. On the basis of exact solutions to the Maxwell equations, it is shown that, additionally to previous studies assuming the Meissner state of the superconductor constituent, perfect cloaking is still realizable at fields higher than the field of full flux penetration into the superconductor and for arbitrary geometrical parameters of both constituents. It is also proven that simultaneously the structure is fully undetectabl…
We report here the frequency-dependent optical response of a nearly ferroelectric superconductor (NFE-SC), like Na$_{x}$WO$_3$, or n-SrTiO$_3$. From $ω=0$, up to a critical frequency $ ω_{c1}$, Meissner-like field extinction occurs as in a usual superconductor. In the "anomalous" region $ω_{c1}<ω<ω_{TO}$ (the TO frequency of the NFE) the field propagates as in a dielectric. For $ω>ω_{TO}$ Meissner damping recurrs, then at higher $ω$, dielectriclike propagation is found. New optical anomalies (peaks in transmission) are predicted for a film of NFE-SC below the soft mode frequency $ω_{TO}$. Thes…
We study theoretically the spontaneous edge current in a small chiral superconductor with surface roughness. We obtained self-consistent solutions of the pair potential and the vector potential by solving the quasiclassical Eilenberger equation and the Maxwell equation simultaneously. We then employed them to calculate numerically the spatial distribution of the chiral edge current in a small superconductor. The characteristic behavior of the spontaneous edge current depends strongly on the symmetries of the order parameters such as chiral $p$-, chiral $d$- and chiral $f$-wave pairing. The edg…
We present a method to compute the magnetic moment of a bulk, finite-size, three-dimensional, anisotropic superconductor. Our numerically implemented perturbative procedure is based on a solution of the nonlinear Maxwell- London equations, where we include the nonlinear relation between current and gauge invariant velocity. The method exploits the small ratio of penetration depth to sample size. We show how to treat the open boundary conditions over an infinite domain and the continuity requirement at the interface. We demonstrate how our method substantially reduces the computational work req…
The holographic approach to building the p-wave superconductors results in three different models: the Maxwell-vector, the SU(2) Yang-Mills and the helical. In the probe limit approximation, we analytically examine the properties of the first two models in the theory with {\it dark matter} sector. It turns out that the effect of {\it dark matter} on the Maxwell-vector p-wave model is the same as on the s-wave superconductor studied earlier. For the non-Abelian model we study the phase transitions between p-wave holographic insulator/superconductor and metal/superconductor. Studies of marginall…

In this paper we give a derivation of a system of equations to describe the electrodynamics of s-wave superconductors. First, we consider a relativistically covariant theory in terms of gauge four-vector electromagnetic potential and scalar complex field. We use the first-order formalism to obtain the supplemented Maxwell equations for gauge invariant electric, magnetic, four-vector fields and the modulus of the superconducting order parameter. The new four-vector field appears in some of the equations as a gauge invariant super-current and in other ones, while gauge invariant, as a four-vecto…
The manifestly Lorentz covariant Landau-Ginzburg equations coupled to Maxwell's equations are considered as a possible framework for the effective description of the interactions between low temperature superconductors and magnetic as well as electric fields. A specific experimental set-up, involving a nanoscopic superconductor and only static applied fields whose geometry is crucial however, is described, which should allow to confirm or invalidate the covariant model through the determination of the temperature dependency of the critical magnetic-electric field phase diagram and the identifi…
We provide the detailed calculation of a general form for Maxwell and London equations that takes into account gravitational corrections in linear approximation. We determine the possible alteration of a static gravitational field in a superconductor making use of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations, providing also an analytic solution in the weak field condition. Finally, we compare the behavior of a high-Tc superconductor with a classical low-Tc superconductor, analyzing the values of the parameters that can enhance the reduction of the gravitational field.
We study a 2+1 dimensional model of superconductors using a 3+1 dimensional gravitational dual theory of a black hole coupled to a scalar field, with negative cosmological constant. In the presence of finite temperature T and a background magnetic field B, we use numerical and analytic techniques to solve the full Maxwell-scalar equations of motion in the background geometry, finding non-trivial localized solutions that correspond to condensate droplets, and to vortices. The properties of these solutions enable us to deduce several key features of the (B,T) phase diagram.
We calculate the possible interaction between a superconductor and the static Earth's gravitational fields, making use of the gravito-Maxwell formalism combined with the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory. We try to estimate which are the most favourable conditions to enhance the effect, optimizing the superconductor parameters characterizing the chosen sample. We also give a qualitative comparison of the behaviour of high-$T_\text{c}$ and classical low-$T_\text{c}$ superconductors with respect to the gravity/superfluid interplay.
We theoretically study effects of surface roughness on the magnetic response of small unconventional superconductors by solving the Eilenberger equation for the quassiclassical Green function and the Maxwell equation for the vector potential simultaneously and self-consistently. The paramagnetic phase of spin-singlet $d$-wave superconducting disks is drastically suppressed by the surface roughness, whereas that of spin-triplet $p$-wave disks is robust even in the presence of the roughness. Such difference derives from the orbital symmetry of paramagnetic odd-frequency Cooper pairs appearing at…
A simple model for simulating the current dynamics and the magnetic properties of superconductors is presented. Short simulation times are achieved by solving the differential form of Maxwell's equations inside the sample, whereas integration is only required at the surface to meet the exact boundary conditions. The procedure reveals the time and position dependence of the current density and the magnetic induction (B) making it very convenient to apply field dependent material parameters for the simulation of magnetization loops, relaxation measurements, etc. Two examples, which are important…
The heirarchical mean-field theory of elastic networks, originally developed by Maxwell to discuss the stability of scaffolds, and recently applied to atomic networks by Phillips and Thorpe, explains the phase diagrams and remarkable superconductive properties of cuprates as the result of giant electron-phonon interactions in a marginally unstable mechanical network. The overall cuprate networks are fragile (floppy), as shown quantitatively (with an accuracy ~1 percent), and without adjustable parameters, by comparison with stabilities of generically similar network glasses, and are stabilized…
We investigate the effects of Dynes pair-breaking scattering rate $Γ$ on the superfluid flow in a narrow thin-film superconductor and a semi-infinite superconductor by self-consistently solving the coupled Maxwell and Usadel equations for the BCS theory in the diffusive limit for all temperature $T$, all $Γ$, and all superfluid momentum. We obtain the depairing current density $j_d(Γ, T)$ and the current-dependent nonlinear kinetic inductance $L_k(j_s, Γ, T)$ in a narrow thin-film and the superheating field $H_{sh}(Γ, T)$ and the current distribution in a semi-infinite superconductor, taking t…
Pulsed field magnetization leads to trapped magnetic field persistent for long times. We present a one-dimensional model of the interaction between an electromagnetic wave and a superconducting slab based on the Maxwell-Ginzburg-Landau (Abelian Higgs) theory. We first derive the model starting from a Lagrangian coupling the electromagnetic field with the Ginzburg-Landau potential for the superconductor. Then we explore numerically its capabilities by applying a Gaussian vector potential pulse and monitoring usual quantities such as the modulus and the phase of the order parameter. We also intro…
Recent experiments have demonstrated that the metamaterial approach is capable of drastic increase of the critical temperature Tc of epsilon near zero (ENZ) metamaterial superconductors. For example, tripling of the critical temperature has been observed in Al-Al2O3 ENZ core-shell metamaterials. Here, we perform theoretical modelling of Tc increase in metamaterial superconductors based on the Maxwell-Garnett approximation of their dielectric response function. Good agreement is demonstrated between theoretical modelling and experimental results in both aluminium and tin-based metamaterials. Ta…
We investigate the superheating fields $H_{sh}$ of semi-infinite superconductors and layered superconductors in the diffusive limit by using the well-established quasiclassical Green's function formalism of the BCS theory. The coupled Maxwell-Usadel equations are self-consistently solved to obtain the spatial distributions of the magnetic field, screening current density, penetration depth, and pair potential. We find the superheating field of a semi-infinite superconductor in the diffusive limit is given by $H_{sh} = 0.795 H_{c0}$ at the temperature $T \to 0$. Here $H_{c0}$ is the thermodynam…
Solving coupled nonlinear sine-Gordon equations and Maxwell equations numerically, we study the electromagnetic and superconducting properties of the single crystal of high-$T_c$ superconductor $\rm{Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ}}$ with a static magnetic field applied parallel to the $ab$-plane and a dc current fed in along the c-axis. Cavity resonances of transverse plasma occur in the intrinsic Josephson junctions with frequencies in terahertz regime. It is revealed that the electromagnetic wave can transmit from the junctions into space. The emitted energy counted by the Poynting vector is about $40…
We study in detail the phase structure of a holographic p-wave superconductor model in a five dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-complex vector field theory with a negative cosmological constant. To construct complete phase diagrams of the model, we consider both the soliton and black hole backgrounds. In both two cases, there exist second order, first order and zeroth order phase transitions, and the so-called "retrograde condensation" also happens. In particular, in the soliton case with the mass of the vector field being beyond a certain critical value, we find a series of phase transitions happe…
We study inhomogeneous solutions of a 3+1-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory. Our results provide a holographic model of superconductivity in the presence of a charge density wave sourced by a modulated chemical potential. We find that below a critical temperature superconducting stripes develop. We show that they are thermodynamically favored over the normal state by computing the grand canonical potential. We investigate the dependence of the critical temperature on the modulation's wave vector, which characterizes the inhomogeneity. We find that it is qualitatively similar to that e…
We report measurements of low-temperature specific heat on the 4f^2-based heavy-fermion superconductor PrOs4Sb12. In magnetic fields above 4.5 T in the normal state, distinct anomalies are found which demonstrate the existence of a field-induced ordered phase (FIOP). The Pr nuclear specific heat indicates an enhancement of the 4f magnetic moment in the FIOP. Utilizing a Maxwell relation, we conclude that anomalous entropy, which is expected for a single-site quadrupole Kondo model, is not concealed below 0.16 K in zero field. We also discuss two possible interpretations of the Schottky-like an…
We discuss the ground state properties of the system composed of a normal metal sandwiched between ferromagnet and superconductor within a tight binding Hubbard model. We have solved the spin-polarized Hartree-Fock-Gorkov equations together with the Maxwell's equation (Ampere's law) and found a proximity induced Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state in this system. Here we show that the inclusion of the normal metal layer in between those subsystems does not necessarily lead to the suppression of the FFLO phase. Moreover, we have found that depending on the thickness of the normal meta…
In this paper we investigate the model of the anti-de Sitter gravity coupled to a Maxwell field and a free, complex scalar field, and construct a fully back-reacted holographic model of superconductor with excited states. With the fixed charge $q$, there exist a series of excited states of holographic superconductor with the corresponding critical chemical potentials. The condensates as functions of the temperature for the two operators $\mathcal{O}_1$ and $\mathcal{O}_2$ of excited states are also studied. For the optical conductivity in the excited states, we find that there exist the additi…
In this paper we examine the possibility of a Josephson AC effect between two superconductors induced by the Earth's gravitational field, making use of the gravito-Maxwell formalism. The theoretical framework exploits the symmetry between the weak field expansion of the gravitational field and the standard Maxwell formulation, combined with the Josephson junction physics. We also suggest a suitable experimental setup, analysing also the related possible difficulties in measurements.
We estimate the conjectured interaction between the Earth gravitational field and a superconductor immersed in external, static electric and magnetic field. The latter is close to the sample upper critical field and generates the presence of a vortex lattice. The proposed interaction could lead to multiple, measurable effects. First of all, a local affection of the gravitational field inside the superconductor could take place. Second, a new component of a generalized electric field parallel to the superconductor surface is generated inside the sample. The analysis is performed by using the ti…
We study the ground state properties of a ferromagnet-superconductor heterostructure on the basis of a quasiclassical theory. We have solved the Eilenberger equations together with Maxwell's equation fully self-consistently and found that due to the proximity effect a Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) like state is realized in such system. Moreover this state has oscillations of the pairing amplitude in either one or two directions, depending on the exchange splitting and thickness of the ferromagnet. In particular, using semiclassical arguments (Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization rule) we show…
Spontaneous bond dimerization (BD) was cojectured to be central to the physics of the cuperate superconductors. Based on ladder models and numerical simulations, we examine the quantitative issue of whether the energy scales involved are sufficient to influence the mechanisms of pairing, stripe formation, pseudo-gap, and quantum critical `normal' state phenomena. We present preliminary evidence that maximum gap scales derived from BD are always too small.
We study fermion pairing and condensation towards an ordered state in strongly coupled quantum critical systems with a holographic AdS/CFT dual. On the gravity side this is modeled by a system of charged fermion interacting through a BCS coupling. At finite density such a system has a BCS instability. We combine the relativistic version of mean-field BCS with the semi-classical fluid approximation for the many-body state of fermions. The resulting groundstate is the AdS equivalent of a charged neutron star with a superconducting core. The spectral function of the fermions confirms that the gro…
