The paper considers an inverse source problem for a one-dimensional time-fractional heat equation with the generalized impedance boundary condition. The inverse problem is the time dependent source parameter identification together with the temperature distrubution from the energy measurement. The well-posedness of the inverse problem is shown by applying the Fourier expansion in terms of eigenfunctions of a spectral problem which has the spectral parameter also in the boundary condition and by using the results on Volterra type integral equation with the kernel may have a diagonal singularity.
In this paper, we consider the direct and inverse problem for time-fractional diffusion in a domain with an impenetrable subregion. Here we assume that on the boundary of the subregion the solution satisfies a generalized impedance boundary condition. This boundary condition is given by a second order spacial differential operator imposed on the boundary. A generalized impedance boundary condition can be used to model corrosion and delimitation. The well-posedness for the direct problem is established where the Laplace Transform is used to study the time dependent boundary value problem. The i…
This paper proves the asymptotic stability of the multidimensional wave equation posed on a bounded open Lipschitz set, coupled with various classes of positive-real impedance boundary conditions, chosen for their physical relevance: time-delayed, standard diffusive (which includes the Riemann-Liouville fractional integral) and extended diffusive (which includes the Caputo fractional derivative). The method of proof consists in formulating an abstract Cauchy problem on an extended state space using a dissipative realization of the impedance operator, be it finite or infinite-dimensional. The a…
We obtain necessary conditions and sufficient conditions on the existence of solutions to the Cauchy problem for a fractional semilinear heat equation with an inhomogeneous term. We identify the strongest spatial singularity of the inhomogeneous term for the solvability of the Cauchy problem.
We consider the Cauchy problem for heat equation with fractional Laplacian and exponential nonlinearity. We establish local well-posedness result in Orlicz spaces. We derive the existence of global solutions for small initial data. We obtain decay estimates for large time in Lebesgue spaces.
Local and global properties of minimal solutions for the heat equation generated by the Dirichlet fractional Laplacian negatively perturbed by Hardy's potentials on open subsets of $\R^d$ are analyzed. As a byproduct we obtain instantaneous blow-up of nonnegative solutions in the supercritical case.
In this short note we prove the logarithmic stability of the single measurement uniqueness result for the fractional Calderón problem which had been derived in \cite{GRSU18}. To this end, we use the quantitative uniqueness results established in \cite{RS20a} and complement these bounds with a boundary doubling estimate. The latter yields control of the order of vanishing of solutions to the fractional Schrödinger equation. Then, following a scheme introduced in \cite{S10,ASV13} in the context of the determination of a surface impedance from far field measurements, this allows us to deduce loga…
In this work we construct the heat kernel of the 1/2-order Laplacian perturbed by the first-order gradient term in Hölder space and the zero-order potential term in generalized Kato's class, and obtain sharp two-sided estimates as well as the gradient estimate of the heat kernel.
The square root of the heat operator $\sqrt{\partial_t-Δ}$, can be realized as the Dirichlet to Neumann map of the heat extension of data on $\mathbb R^{n+1}$ to $\mathbb R^{n+2}_+$. In this note we obtain similar characterizations for general fractional powers of the heat operator, $(\partial_t-Δ)^s$, $s\in (0,1)$. Using the characterizations we derive properties and boundary estimates for parabolic integro-differential equations from purely local arguments in the extension problem.
We prove that the initial-value problem for the fractional heat equation admits a solution provided that the (possibly unbounded) initial datum has a conveniently moderate growth at infinity. Under the same growth condition we also prove that the solution is unique. Our result does not require any sign assumption, thus complementing the Widder's type theorem of Barrios et al. (Arch. Rational Mech. Anal. 213 (2014) 629-650) for positive solutions. Finally, we show that the fractional heat flow preserves convexity of the initial datum. Incidentally, several properties of stationary convex soluti…
In this work, we consider a number of boundary-value problems for time-fractional heat equation with the recently introduced Caputo-Fabrizio derivative. Using the method of separation of variables, we prove a unique solvability of the stated problems. Moreover, we have found an explicit solution to certain initial value problem for Caputo-Fabrizio fractional order differential equation by reducing the problem to a Volterra integral equation. Different forms of solution were presented depending on the values of the parameter appeared in the problem.
We study the Cauchy problem for the semilinear fractional heat equation $u_{t}=\triangle^{α/2}u+f(u)$ with non-negative initial value $u_{0}\in L^{q}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ and locally Lipschitz, non-negative source term $f$. For $f$ satisfying the Osgood-type condition $\int_{1}^{\infty}\frac{ds}{f(s)}=\infty$, we show that there exist initial conditions such that the equation has no local solution in $L^{1}_{loc}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$.
We prove the maximal local regularity of weak solutions to the parabolic problem associated with the fractional Laplacian with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions on an arbitrary bounded open set $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$. Proofs combine classical abstract regularity results for parabolic equations with some new local regularity results for the associated elliptic problems.
We derive a blow-up dichotomy for positive solutions of fractional semilinear heat equations on the whole space. That is, within a certain class of convex source terms, we establish a necessary and sufficient condition on the source for all positive solutions to become unbounded in finite time. Moreover, we show that this condition is equivalent to blow-up of all positive solutions of a closely-related scalar ordinary differential equation.
In this note we analyse \emph{quantitative} approximation properties of a certain class of \emph{nonlocal} equations: Viewing the fractional heat equation as a model problem, which involves both \emph{local} and \emph{nonlocal} pseudodifferential operators, we study quantitative approximation properties of solutions to it. First, relying on Runge type arguments, we give an alternative proof of certain \emph{qualitative} approximation results from \cite{DSV16}. Using propagation of smallness arguments, we then provide bounds on the \emph{cost} of approximate controllability and thus quantify th…
We consider weak solutions of the fractional heat equation posed in the whole $n$-dimensional space, and establish their asymptotic convergence to the fundamental solution as $t\to\infty$ under the assumption that the initial datum is an integrable function, or a finite Radon measure. Convergence with suitable rates is obtained for solutions with a finite first initial moment, while for solutions with compactly supported initial data convergence in relative error holds. The results are applied to the fractional Fokker-Planck equation. Brief mention of other techniques and related equations is …
In this paper, we analyze the controllability properties under positivity constraints on the control or the state of a one-dimensional heat equation involving the fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^s$ ($0<s<1$) on the interval $(-1,1)$. We prove the existence of a minimal (strictly positive) time $T_{\rm min}$ such that the fractional heat dynamics can be controlled from any initial datum in $L^2(-1,1)$ to a positive trajectory through the action of a positive control, when $s>1/2$. Moreover, we show that in this minimal time constrained controllability is achieved by means of a control that belongs t…
We obtain Strichartz estimates for the fractional heat equations by using both the abstract Strichartz estimates of Keel-Tao and the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality. We also prove an endpoint homogeneous Strichartz estimate via replacing $ L^{\infty}_{x}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ by $BMO_{x}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ and a parabolic homogeneous Strichartz estimate. Meanwhile, we generalize the Strichartz estimates by replacing the Lebesgue spaces with either Besov spaces or Sobolev spaces. Moreover, we establish the Strichartz estimates for the fractional heat equations with a time dependent potential of an…
This paper deals with the limit cases for $s$-fractional heat flows in a cylindrical domain, with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions, as $s\to 0^+$ and $s\to 1^-$\,. To this purpose, we describe the fractional heat flows as minimizing movements of the corresponding Gagliardo seminorms, with respect to the $L^2$ metric. First, we provide an abstract stability result for minimizing movements in Hilbert spaces, with respect to a sequence of $Γ$-converging uniformly $λ$-convex energy functionals. Then, we provide the $Γ$-convergence analysis of the $s$-Gagliardo seminorms as $s\to 0^+$ and …
We consider fractional Schrödinger operators with possibly singular potentials and derive certain spatially averaged estimates for its complex-time heat kernel. The main tool is a Phragmén-Lindelöf theorem for polynomially bounded functions on the right complex half-plane. The interpolation leads to possibly nonoptimal off-diagonal bounds.
In this note we consider the nonlinear heat equation associated to the fractional Hermite operator $H^β=(-Δ+|x|^2)^β$, $0<β\leq 1$. We show the local solvability of the related Cauchy problem in the framework of modulation spaces. The result is obtained by combining tools from microlocal and time-frequency analysis. As a byproduct, we compute the Gabor matrix of pseudodifferential operators with symbols in the Hörmander class $S^m_{0,0}$, $m\in\mathcal{R}$.
We study the existence and behaviour of blowing-up solutions to the fully fractional heat equation $$ \mathcal{M} u=u^p,\qquad x\in\mathbb{R}^N,\;0<t<T $$ with $p>0$, where $\mathcal{M}$ is a nonlocal operator given by a space-time kernel $M(x,t)=c_{N,σ}t^{-\frac N2-1-σ}e^{-\frac{|x|^2}{4t}}{1}_{\{t>0\}}$, $0<σ<1$. This operator coincides with the fractional power of the heat operator, $\mathcal{M}=(\partial_t-Δ)^σ$ defined through semigroup theory. We characterize the global existence exponent $p_0=1$ and the Fujita exponent $p_*=1+\frac{2σ}{N+2(1-σ)}$, and study the rate at which the blowing…
We study a Caputo time fractional degenerate diffusion equation which we prove to be equivalent to the fractional parabolic obstacle problem, showing that its solution evolves for any $α\in(0,1)$ to the same stationary state, the solution of the classic elliptic obstacle problem. The only thing which changes with $α$ is the convergence speed. We also study the problem from the numerical point of view, comparing some finite different approaches, and showing the results of some tests. These results extend what recently proved in [1] for the case $α=1$.
We produce a finite time blow-up solution for nonlinear fractional heat equation ($\partial_t u + (-Δ)^{β/2}u=u^k$) in modulation and Fourier amalgam spaces on the torus $\mathbb T^d$ and the Euclidean space $\mathbb R^d.$ This complements several known local and small data global well-posedness results in modulation spaces on $\mathbb R^d.$ Our method of proof rely on the formal solution of the equation. This method should be further applied to other non-linear evolution equations.
Given a connected compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ without boundary, $\dim M\ge 2$, we consider a space--time fractional diffusion equation with an interior source that is supported on an open subset $V$ of the manifold. The time-fractional part of the equation is given by the Caputo derivative of order $α\in(0,1]$, and the space fractional part by $(-Δ_g)^β$, where $β\in(0,1]$ and $Δ_g$ is the Laplace--Beltrami operator on the manifold. The case $α=β=1$, which corresponds to the standard heat equation on the manifold, is an important special case. We construct a specific source such that m…
We study the spatial critical points of the solutions $u=u(x,t)$ of the fractional heat equation. For the Cauchy problem, we show that the origin $0$ satisfies $\nabla_x u(0,t) = 0$ for $t>0$ if and only if the initial data satisfy a balance law of the form $\int_{\mathbb{S}^{N-1}} ωu_0(rω) \, \mathrm{d} ω=0$ for a. e. $r \ge 0$. Moreover, for the Dirichlet initial-boundary value problem, we prove two symmetry results: $Ω$ is a ball centered at the origin if and only if $\nabla_x u(0,t) = 0$ for $t>0$ provided that the initial data satisfies the above-mentioned balance law; $Ω$ is centrosymmet…
In this work, we are interested on the study of the Fujita exponent and the meaning of the blow-up for the Fractional Cauchy problem with the Hardy potential, namely, \begin{equation*} u_t+(-Δ)^s u=λ\dfrac{u}{|x|^{2s}}+u^{p}\inn\ren,\\ u(x,0)=u_{0}(x)\inn\ren, \end{equation*} where $N> 2s$, $0<s<1$, $(-Δ)^s$ is the fractional laplacian of order $2s$, $ł>0$, $u_0\ge 0$, and $1<p<p_{+}(s,λ)$, where $p_{+}(λ, s)$ is the critical existence power found in \cite{BMP} and \cite{AMPP}.
We establish the existence and uniqueness of fundamental solutions for the fractional porous medium equation introduced in \cite{PQRV1}. They are self-similar functions of the form $u(x,t)= t^{-α} f(|x|\,t^{-β})$ with suitable $α$ and $β$. As a main application of this construction, we prove that the asymptotic behaviour of general solutions is represented by such special solutions. Among other interesting qualitative properties of the equation we prove an Aleksandrov reflection principle.
In this paper, we study quantitative spatial analytic bounds and unique continuation inequalities of solutions for fractional heat equations with an analytic lower order term on the whole space. At first, we show that the solution has a uniform positive analytic radius for all time, and the solution enjoys a log-type ultra-analytic bound if the coefficient is ultra-analytic. Second, we prove a Hölder type interpolation inequality on a thick set, with an explicit dependence on the analytic radius of coefficient. Finally, by the telescoping series method, we establish an observability inequality…
We prove that the Cauchy problem associated with the one dimensional quadratic (fractional) heat equation: $u_t=D_x^{2α} u \mp u^2,\; t\in (0,T),\; x\in \R$ or $ \T $, with $ 0<α\le 1 $ is well-posed in $ H^s $ for $ s\ge \max(-α,1/2-2α) $ except in the case $ α=1/2 $ where it is shown to be well-posed for $ s>-1/2 $ and ill-posed for $ s=-1/2 $. As a by-product we improve the known well-posedness results for the heat equation ($α=1$) by reaching the end-point Sobolev index $ s=-1 $. Finally, in the case $ 1/2<α\le 1 $, we also prove optimal results in the Besov spaces $B^{s,q}_2.$
We study the regularity up to the boundary of solutions to fractional heat equation in bounded $C^{1,1}$ domains. More precisely, we consider solutions to $\partial_t u + (-Δ)^s u=0 \textrm{ in }Ω,\ t > 0$, with zero Dirichlet conditions in $\mathbb{R}^n\setminus Ω$ and with initial data $u_0\in L^2(Ω)$. Using the results of the second author and Serra for the elliptic problem, we show that for all $t>0$ we have $u(\cdot, t)\in C^s(\mathbb{R}^n)$ and $u(\cdot, t)/δ^s \in C^{s-ε}(\overlineΩ)$ for any $ε> 0$ and $δ(x) = \textrm{dist}(x,\partialΩ)$. Our regularity results apply not only to the fr…
We construct a theory of existence, uniqueness and regularity of solutions for the fractional heat equation $\partial_t u +(-Δ)^s u=0$, $0<s<1$, posed in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^N$ with data in a class of locally bounded Radon measures that are allowed to grow at infinity with an optimal growth rate. We consider a class of nonnegative weak solutions and prove that there is an equivalence between nonnegative data and solutions, which is given in one direction by the representation formula, in the other one by the initial trace. We review many of the typical properties of the solutions, in p…
In this paper, we consider the fractional heat equation $u_{t}=\triangle^{α/2}u+f(u)$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions on the ball $B_{R}\subset \mathbb{R}^{d}$, where $\triangle^{α/2}$ is the fractional Laplacian, $f:[0,\infty)\rightarrow [0,\infty)$ is continuous and non-decreasing. We present the characterisations of $f$ to ensure the equation has a local solution in $L^{q}(B_{R})$ provided that the non-negative initial data $u_{0}\in L^{q}(B_{R})$. For $q>1$ and $1<α\leq 2$, we show that the equation has a local solution in $L^{q}(B_{R})$ if and only if $\lim_{s\rightarrow \infty}\sup s^…
In this paper, we establish gradient continuity for solutions to \[ (\partial_t - \operatorname{div}(A(x) \nabla u))^s =f,\ s \in (1/2, 1), \] when $f$ belongs to the scaling critical function space $L(\frac{n+2}{2s-1}, 1)$. Our main results Theorems 1.1 and 1.2 can be seen as a nonlocal generalization of a well-known result of Stein in the context of fractional heat type operators and sharpens some of the previous gradient continuity results which deals with $f$ in subcritical spaces. Our proof is based on an appropriate adaptation of compactness arguments, which has its roots in a fundamenta…
In this short note we prove that if $u$ solves $(\partial_t - Δ)^s u = Vu$ in $\mathbb R^n_x \times \mathbb R_t$, and vanishes to infinite order at a point $(x_0, t_0)$, then $u \equiv 0$ in $\mathbb R^n_x \times \mathbb R_t$. This sharpens (and completes) our earlier result that proves $u(\cdot, t) \equiv 0$ for $t \leq t_0$ if it vanishes to infinite order at $(x_0, t_0)$.
In this paper we obtain quantitative bounds on the maximal order of vanishing for solutions to $(\partial_t - Δ)^s u =Vu$ for $s\in [1/2, 1)$ via new Carleman estimates. Our main result Theorem 1.1 and Theorem 1.3 can be thought of as a parabolic generalization of the corresponding quantitative uniqueness result in the time independent case due to Rüland and it can also be regarded as a nonlocal generalization of a similar result due to Zhu for solutions to local parabolic equations.
We establish some fixed-time decay estimates in Lebesgue spaces for the fractional heat propagator $e^{-tH^β}$, $t, β>0$, associated with the harmonic oscillator $H=-Δ+ |x|^2$. We then prove some local and global wellposedness results for nonlinear fractional heat equations.
In this paper we study removable singularities for solutions of the fractional heat equation in time varying domains. We introduce associated capacities and we study some of its metric and geometric properties.
We establish sharp two-sided bounds on the heat kernel of the fractional Laplacian, perturbed by a drift having critical-order singularity, by transferring it to appropriate weighted space with singular weight.
