We use neutron scattering to compare the magnetic excitations in the hidden order (HO) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) phases in URu2-xFexSi2 as a function of Fe concentration. The magnetic excitation spectra change significantly between x = 0.05 and x = 0.10, following the enhancement of the AFM ordered moment, in good analogy to the behavior of the parent compound under applied pressure. Prominent lattice-commensurate low-energy excitations characteristic of the HO phase vanish in the AFM phase. The magnetic scattering is dominated by strong excitations along the Brillouin zone edges, underscoring the important role of electron hybridization to both HO and AFM phases, and the similarity of the underlying electronic structure. The stability of the AFM phase is correlated with enhanced local-itinerant electron hybridization.
Shubnikov-de Haas measurements of high quality URu2Si2 single crystals reveal two previously unobserved Fermi surface branches in the so-called hidden order phase. Therefore about 55% of the enhanced mass is now detected. Under pressure in the antiferromagnetic state, the Shubnikov-de Haas frequencies for magnetic fields applied along the crystalline c axis show little change compared with the zero pressure data. This implies a similar Fermi surface in both the hidden order and antiferromagnetic states, which strongly suggests that the lattice doubling in the antiferromagnetic phase due to the…
An emergence of magnetic boson of instantonic nature, that provides a Cooper-'pairing glue', is considered in the repulsive 'nested' Hubbard model of superconducting cuprates. It is demonstrated, that antiferromagnetic instantons of a spin density wave type may have negative energy due to coupling with Cooper pair condensate. A set of Eliashberg-like equations is derived and solved self-consistently, proving the above suggestion. An instantonic propagator plays the role of Green function of pairing 'glue' boson. Simultaneously, the instantons defy condensation of the mean-field SDW order. We h…
Ground-state properties of the spin-1 two-leg antiferromagnetic ladder are investigated precisely by means of the quantum Monte Carlo method. It is found that the correlation length along the chains and the spin gap both remain finite regardless of the strength of interchain coupling, i.e., the Haldane state and the spin-1 dimer state are connected smoothly without any quantum phase transitions between them. We propose a plaquette-singlet solid state, which qualitatively describes the ground state of the spin-1 ladder quite well, and also a corresponding topological hidden order parameter. It …
We report soft point-contact spectroscopy studies of URu2Si2 both in the hidder order (HO) and the large-moment antiferromagnetic (LMAF) states accessed by pressure. In the HO state at ambient pressure, the spectroscopy shows two asymmetric peaks around the Fermi energy that emerge below the hidden order temperature T_{HO}. In the LMAF state at higher pressures, the spectra are remarkably similar to those in the HO state, indicating a similar Fermi surface gapping in the HO and LMAF states and providing a new clue to unraveling the puzzling HO state.
We propose a candidate for the hidden order in URu2Si2: a rank-5 E type spin density wave between Uranium 5f crystal field doublets breaking time reversal and lattice tetragonal symmetry in a manner consistent with recent torque measurements [R. Okazaki et al, Science 331, 439 (2011)]. We argue that coupling of this order parameter to magnetic probes can be hidden by crystal field effects, while still having significant effects on transport, thermodynamics and magnetic susceptibilities. In a simple tight-binding model for the heavy quasiparticles, we show the connection between the hidden orde…
We present a comprehensive set of elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on a range of Fe-doped samples of U(Ru$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$)$_2$Si$_2$ with 0.01~$\le~x~\le$~0.15. All of the samples measured exhibit long-range antiferromagnetic order, with the size of the magnetic moment quickly increasing to 0.51~$μ_B$ at 2.5\% doping and continuing to increase monotonically with doping, reaching 0.69~$μ_B$ at 15\% doping. Time-of-flight and inelastic triple-axis measurements show the existence of excitations at (1~0~0) and (1.4~0~0) in all samples, which are also observed in the parent compo…
The ground-state properties of a spin $S=1/2$ tetrameric Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain with alternating couplings AF$_{1}$-AF$_{2}$-AF$_{1}$% -F (AF and F denote antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic couplings, respectively) are studied by means of the density matrix renormalization group method. Two plateaux of magnetization $m$ are found at $m=0$ and 1/4% . It is shown that in such a spin-1/2 AF system, there is a gap from the singlet ground state to the triplet excited states in the absence of a magnetic field. The spin-spin correlation function decays exponentially, and the gapped state…
Simultaneous neutron-scattering and thermal expansion measurements on the heavy-fermion superconductor URu2Si2 under hydrostatic pressure of 0.67 GPa have been performed in order to detect the successive paramagnetic, hidden order, and large moment antiferromagnetic phases on cooling. The temperature dependence of the sharp low energy excitation at the wavevector Q_0=(100) shows that this excitation is clearly a signature of the hidden order state. In the antiferromagnetic phase, this collective mode disappears. The higher energy excitation at the incommensurate wavevector Q_1=(1.4,0,0) persis…
We have investigated the nature of the competition between hidden order and antiferromagnetic (AF) order in URu_2Si_2 by performing the neutron scattering experiments under hydrostatic-pressure P, uniaxial-stress sigma, and Rh-substitution conditions. Hidden order observed at ambient pressure in pure URu_2Si_2 is found to be replaced by the AF order by applying P, sigma along the tetragonal basal plane, and by doping Rh. We discuss these experimental results on the basis of the crystalline strain calculations, and suggest that this phase transition is generated by the 0.1% increase of the tetr…
Systematic analysis of the planar resistivity, Hall effect and cotangent of the Hall angle for the electron-doped cuprates reveals underlying Fermi-liquid behavior even deep in the antiferromagnetic part of the phase diagram. The transport scattering rate exhibits a quadratic temperature dependence, and is nearly independent of doping, compound and carrier type (electrons vs. holes), and hence universal. Our analysis moreover indicates that the material-specific resistivity upturn at low temperatures and low doping has the same origin in both electron- and hole-doped cuprates.
X-ray diffraction experiments under pressure in a diamond anvil cell have been performed to gauge any response of the crystalline lattice of URu2Si2 to the "hidden order" or antiferromagnetic transitions, the latter of which is accessible only with applied pressure. The ambient-pressure crystal structure of URu2Si2 persists to high pressure, and structural characterization reveals a reasonably robust crystal lattice with respect to both of the aforementioned temperature-induced electronic transitions. Coupling between the lattice and the "hidden order" transition is reconfirmed to be subtle, a…
In our previous work, we identify the Sublattice-Pairing State (SPS) in Schwinger-fermion representation as the spin liquid phase discovered in recent numerical study on a honeycomb lattice. In this paper, we show that SPS is identical to the zero-flux $Z_2$ spin liquid in Schwinger-boson representation found by Wang\cite{Wang2010} by an explicit duality transformation. SPS is connected to an \emph{unusual} antiferromagnetic ordered phase, which we term as chiral-antiferromagnetic (CAF) phase, by an O(4) critical point. CAF phase breaks the SU(2) spin rotation symmetry completely and has three…
We report our theoretical results on spin conductivity in antiferromagnets by focusing on the role of the magnetic toroidal quadrupole (MTQ) in electron systems. The MTQ is characterized as a time-reversal-odd rank-2 polar tensor degree of freedom in electrons, which is distinct from conventional rank-1 magnetic and magnetic toroidal dipoles. Based on a microscopic $sd$ model analysis for a tetragonal system under both collinear and noncollinear antiferromagnetic orderings, we clarify that the MTQ becomes a source of an extrinsic spin conductivity even with neither a uniform magnetization nor …
The onset of antiferromagnetic order in URu2Si2 has been studied via neutron diffraction in a helium pressure medium, which most closely approximates hydrostatic conditions. The antiferromagnetic critical pressure is 0.80 GPa, considerably higher than values previously reported. Complementary electrical resistivity measurements imply that the hidden order-antiferromagnetic bicritical point far exceeds 1.02 GPa. Moreover, the redefined pressure-temperature phase diagram suggests that the superconducting and antiferromagnetic phase boundaries actually meet at a common critical pressure at zero t…
The hidden order developing below 17.5K in the heavy fermion material URu2Si2 has eluded identification for over twenty five years. This paper will review the recent theory of ``hastatic order,'' a novel two-component order parameter capturing the hybridization between half-integer spin (Kramers) conduction electrons and the non-Kramers 5f^2 Ising local moments, as strongly indicated by the observation of Ising quasiparticles in de Haas-van Alphen measurements. Hastatic order differs from conventional magnetism as it is a spinor order that breaks both single and double time-reversal symmetry b…
It is shown that the hidden ordered (HO) state in heavy fermionic metal URu2Si2 is either nonconventional charge density wave (CDW) or antiferroelectric (AFE) commensurate ordering. Similar to antiferromagnetic (AF) order an antiferroelectric order creates momentum dependence of conducting electrons $g$-factor. This even modest anisotropy along with the anisotropy of heavy cyclotron mass can produce multiple effect of so called zero-spin splitting in the amplitude of the de Haas - van Alphen and the Shubnikov - de Haas signals as function of direction of magnetic field.
In the hidden order of URu2Si2 the resistivity at very low temperature shows no T^2 behavior above the transition to superconductivity. However, when entering the antiferromagnetic phase, the Fermi liquid behavior is recovered. We discuss the change of the inelastic term when entering the AF phase with pressure considering the temperature dependence of the Grueneisen parameter at ambient pressure and the influence of superconductivity by an extrapolation of high field data.
Hidden-order phase transition in the heavy-fermion superconductor URu$_2$Si$_2$ exhibits the mean-field-like anomaly in temperature dependence of heat capacity. Motivated by this observation, here we explore the impact of the complex order parameter fluctuations on the thermodynamic properties of the hidden order phase. Specifically, we employ the mean-field theory for the hidden order which describes the hidden order parameter by an average of the hexadecapole operator. We compute the gaussian fluctuation corrections to the mean-field theory equations including both the fluctuations due to 'h…
We review current attempts to characterize the underlying nature of the hidden order in $URu_2Si_2$. A wide variety of experiments point to the existence of two order parameters: a large primary order parameter of unknown character which co-exists with secondary antiferromagnetic order. Current theories can be divided into two groups determined by whether or not the primary order parameter breaks time-reversal symmetry. We propose a series of experiments designed to test the time-reversal nature of the underlying primary order in $URu_2Si_2$ and to characterize its local single-ion physics.
The ground state of the $S=1$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain belongs to the Haldane phase -- a well known example of symmetry-protected topological phase. A staggered field applied to the $S=1$ antiferromagnetic chain breaks all the symmetries that protect the Haldane phase as a topological phase, reducing it to a trivial phase. That is, the Haldane phase is then connected adiabatically to an antiferromagnetic product state. Nevertheless, as long as the symmetry under site-centered inversion combined with a spin rotation is preserved, the phase is still distinct from another trivial phase.…
The double-exchange (DE) interaction, that is, a ferromagnetic (FM) interaction due to a combination of electron motion and the Hund coupling, is a well known source of a wide class of FM orders. Here, we show that the DE interaction in highly photoexcited states is antiferromagnetic (AFM). Transient dynamics of quantum electrons coupled with classical spins are analyzed. An ac field applied to a metallic FM state results in an almost perfect Néel state. A time characterizing the FM-to-AFM conversion is scaled by light amplitude and frequency. This hidden AFM interaction is attributable to the…
We develop a Landau Ginzburg theory of the hidden order phase and the local moment antiferromagnetic phase of URu_2Si_2. We unify the two broken symmetries in a common complex order parameter and derive many experimentally relevant consequences such as the topology of the phase diagram in magnetic field and pressure. The theory accounts for the appearance of a moment under application of stress and the thermal expansion anomaly across the phase transitions. It identifies the low energy mode which is seen in the hidden order phase near the conmensurate wavector (0,0, 1) as the pseudo-Goldstone …
Heavy-fermion metals exhibit a plethora of low-temperature ordering phenomena, among them the so-called hidden-order phases that in contrast to conventional magnetic order are invisible to standard neutron diffraction. One of the oldest and structurally simplest hidden-order compounds, CeB6, became famous for an elusive phase that was attributed to the antiferroquadrupolar ordering of cerium-4f moments. In its ground state, CeB6 also develops a more usual antiferromagnetic (AFM) order. Hence, its essential low-temperature physics was always considered to be solely governed by AFM interactions …
We report a comprehensive electronic structure investigation of the paramagnetic (PM), the large moment antiferromagnetic (LMAF), and the hidden order (HO) phases of URu$_2$Si$_2$. We have performed relativistic full-potential calculations on the basis of the density functional theory (DFT), employing different exchange-correlation functionals to treat electron correlations within the open $5f$-shell of uranium. Specifically, we investigate---through a comparison between calculated and low-temperature experimental properties---whether the $5f$ electrons are localized or delocalized in URu$_2$S…
Possibility of a novel pseudo-scalar (octupole) order is studied theoretically for orbitally degenerate systems with strong spin-orbit coupling such as Ce$_x$La$_{1-x}$B$_6$. It is discussed that coexistence of an octupole order parameter and antiferromagnetic fluctuation should lead to drastic softening of the elastic constant by a mode-mixing effect. Nonlinear coupling between dipole, quadrupole and octupole fluctuations is taken into account in terms of a Ginzburg-Landau-type functional which is derived microscopically through path integral.
We develop a general Bethe Ansatz formalism for diagonalizing an integrable model of a magnetic impurity of arbitrary spin coupled ferro- or antiferromagnetically to a chain of interacting electrons. The method is applied to an open chain, with the exact solution revealing a ``hidden'' Kondo effect driven by forward electron scattering off the impurity. We argue that the so-called ``operator reflection matrices'' proposed in recent Bethe Ansatz studies of related models emulate only forward electron-impurity scattering which may explain the absence of complete Kondo screening for certain value…
Ground state magnetic phase diagrams of the square and simple cubic lattices are investigated for the narrow band Hubbard model within the slave-boson approach by Kotliar and Ruckenstein. The transitions between saturated (half-metallic) and non-saturated ferromagnetic phases as well as similar transition in antiferromagnetic (AFM) state are considered in the three-dimensional case. Two types of saturated antiferromagnetic state with different concentration dependences of sublattice magnetization are found in the two-dimensional case in the vicinity of half-filling: the state with a gap betwee…
The ground state phase diagrams and thermodynamic properties of a spin-1 bond-alternating Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain with a single-ion anisotropy in longitudinal and transverse magnetic fields are investigated jointly by means of the infinite time evolving block decimation, the linearized tensor renormalization group and the density matrix renormalization group methods. It is found that in the magnetic field-bond alternating ratio plane six phases such as singlet dimer, Haldane, two Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid, 1/2 magnetization plateau and spin polarized phases are identified in a longi…
We have investigated the nature of the antiferromagnetic (AF) phase induced by uniaxial stress sigma in URu2Si2, by performing elastic neutron scattering measurements up to 0.4 GPa. We have found that the AF Bragg-peak intensity shows a clear hysteresis loop with sigma under the zero-stress cooling condition. The result strongly suggests that the sigma-induced AF phase is metastable and separated from the coexisting "hidden ordered" phase by a first-order phase transition. We also present the analyses of the crystalline strain effects, and suggest that the c/a ratio plays an important role in …
This Topical Review describes the multitude of unconventional behaviors in the hidden order, heavy fermion, antiferromagnetic and superconducting phases of the intermetallic compound URu$_2$Si$_2$ when tuned with pressure, magnetic field, and substitutions for all three elements. Such `perturbations' result in a variety of new phases beyond the mysterious hidden order that are only now being slowly understood through a series of state-of-the-science experimentation, along with an array of novel theoretical approaches. Despite all these efforts spanning more than 30 years, hidden order (HO) rem…
We study the heat transport of S = 1/2 chain compound CuCl_2$\cdot$2((CH_3)_2SO) along the b axis (vertical to the chain direction) at very low temperatures. The zero-field thermal conductivity (κ) shows a distinct kink at about 0.9 K, which is related to the long-range antiferromagnetic (AF) transition. With applying magnetic field along the c axis, κ(H) curves also show distinct changes at the phase boundaries between the AF and the high-field disordered states. These results indicate a strong spin-phonon interaction and the magnetic excitations play a role in the b-axis heat transport as ph…
In this paper, we study the phases of the Heisenberg model on the \kagome lattice with antiferromagnetic nearest neighbour coupling $J_1$ and ferromagnetic next neighbour coupling $J_2$. Analysing the long wavelength, low energy effective action that describes this model, we arrive at the phase diagram as a function of $χ= \frac{J_2}{J_1} $. The interesting part of this phase diagram is that for small $χ$, which includes $χ=0$, there is a phase with no long range spin order and with gapless and spin zero low lying excitations. We discuss our results in the context of earlier, numerical and exp…
Sr$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$ (SCOC) is a model undoped cuprate with $I4/mmm$ crystallographic symmetry, and a simple magnetic space group $C_Amca$ with associated magnetic point group $mmm1'$. However, recent second harmonic spectroscopy in the antiferromagnetic phase has challenged this picture, suggesting instead a magnetic point group $4/mm'm'$ that co-exists with the antiferromagnetism and breaks the two orthogonal mirror planes containing the tetragonal $c$-axis. Here, we analyze the symmetry of SCOC in light of the second harmonic results, and discuss possible ground states that are consistent wi…
We examine the effective field theory of the Bethe ansatz integrable Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin chains. It shows that the quantum critical theories for the integer spin-S chains should be characterized by the SO(3)level-S Wess-Zumino-Witten model, and classified by the third cohomology group $H^{3}(SO(3),Z)=Z$. Depending on the parity of spin S, this integer classification is further divided into two distinct universality classes, which are associated with two completely different conformal field theories: the even-S chains have gapless bosonic excitations and the odd-S chains have both…
Motivated by the importance of antiferromagnetic skyrmions as building blocks of next-generation data storage and processing devices, we report theoretical and computational analysis of a model for a spin-orbit coupled correlated magnet on a triangular lattice. We find that two distinct antiferromagnetic skyrmion crystal (AF-SkX) states can be stabilized at low temperatures in the presence of external magnetic field. The results are obtained via Monte Carlo simulations on an effective magnetic model derived from the microscopic electronic Hamiltonian consisting of Rashba spin-orbit coupling, a…
We show how the onset of a non-Slater antiferromagnetic ordering in a correlated material can be detected by optical spectroscopy. Using dynamical mean-field theory we identify two distinctive features: The antiferromagnetic ordering is associated with an enhanced spectral weight above the optical gap, and well separated spin-polaron peaks emerge in the optical spectrum. Both features are indeed observed in LaSrMnO_4 [Gössling et al., Phys. Rev. B 77, 035109 (2008)]
Dimerized antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 ladders are known to exhibit a quantum critical phase transition in the ground state, the existence or absence of which is dependent on the dimerization pattern of the ladder. The gapped phases cannot be distinguished by the conventional Landau long-range order parameter. However, they possess a non-local (hidden) string order parameter, which is non-zero in one phase and vanishes in the other. We use an exact diagonalization technique to calculate ground state energies, energy gaps and string order parameters of dimerized two- and three-leg Heisenberg ladd…
We report a neutron scattering study of the magnetic excitation spectrum in each of the three temperature and pressure driven phases of URu$_2$Si$_2$. We find qualitatively similar excitations throughout the (H0L) scattering plane in the hidden order and large moment phases, with no changes in the $\hbarω$-widths of the excitations at the $Σ$ = (1.407,0,0) and $Z$ = (1,0,0) points, within our experimental resolution. There is, however, an increase in the gap at the $Σ$ point from 4.2(2) meV to 5.5(3) meV, consistent with other indicators of enhanced antiferromagnetism under pressure.
Layered 5$d$ transition iridium oxides, Sr$_2$(Ir,Rh)O$_4$, are described as unconventional Mott insulators with strong spin-orbit coupling. The undoped compound, Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, is a nearly ideal two-dimensional pseudospin-$1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet, similarly to the insulating parent compound of high-temperature superconducting copper oxides. Using polarized neutron diffraction, we here report a hidden magnetic order in pure and doped Sr$_2$(Ir,Rh)O$_4$, distinct from the usual antiferromagnetic pseudo-spin ordering. We find that time-reversal symmetry is broken while the lattice transl…
Laser driving in systems with competing or coupled electronic orders can lead to the enhancement of orders, or even to the appearance of hidden phases without an equilibrium analogue. Here we consider a model for A$_3$C$_{60}$ which exhibits a unique interplay between conventional and odd-frequency (or composite) orders. In particular, we show that photo-doping of the antiferromagnetic Mott insulating phase, as realized in Cs$_3$C$_{60}$, results in a paramagnetic gapped state with broken orbital symmetry. This hidden phase, which does not exist under equilibrium conditions, can be interpreted…
We report simultaneous measurements of the distribution of lattice constants and the antiferromagnetic moment in high-purity URu2Si2, using both Larmor and conventional neutron diffraction, as a function of temperature and pressure up to 18 kbar. We establish that the tiny moment in the hidden order (HO) state is purely parasitic and quantitatively originates from the distribution of lattice constants. Moreover, the HO and large-moment antiferromagnetism (LMAF) at high pressure are separated by a line of first-order phase transitions, which ends in a bicritical point. Thus the HO and LMAF are …

Motivated by recent reports of a field-induced intermediate phase (IP) in the antiferromagnetic honeycomb Kitaev model that may be a spin liquid whose nature is distinct from the Kitaev Z2 phase, we present a detailed numerical study on the nature and dynamical response (such as dynamical spin-structure factors and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering intensities) of this field-induced IP and neighboring phases in a family of Kitaev-based models related by hidden symmetries and duality transformations. We further show that the same field-induced IP can appear in models relevant for $α$-RuCl${_3…
The heavy fermion material CeB6 shows hidden magnetic ordered phases. Besides well-known Ferromagnetic(FM) and Antiferromagnetic(AFM) phases, CeB6 is speculated to form a unique antiferroquadrupolar (AFQ) phase that is orbital in nature. Hidden from many characterization methods that cannot assess orbital ordering, debate continue on the origins. From electronic-structure calculations, we find that these three phases are energetically almost degenerate, suggesting that magnetic domain walls form, possibly with defect boundaries. Only calculations with spin-orbit coupling reproduce most band st…
By calculating orbitally resolved Pauli susceptibilities within maximally localized Wannier orbital basis transformed from first principles band structures, we find that magnetism in Fe$_{1+x}$Te still has its itinerant origin even without Fermi surface nesting, provided orbital modulation of particle-hole excitations are considered. This leads to strong magnetic instabilities at wave vector (0,$π$)/($π$,0) in d$_{xz}$/d$_{yz}$ orbitals that are responsible for the bicollinear antiferromagnetic state as extra electrons donated from excess Fe are considered. Magnetic exchange coupling between e…
We consider the effects of impurities on the enigmatic hidden order (HO) state of the heavy-fermion material URu2Si2. In particular, we focus on local effects of Rh impurities as a tool to probe the suppression of the HO state. To study local properties we introduce a lattice free energy, where the time invariant HO order parameter "psi" and local antiferromagnetic (AFM) order parameter M are competing orders. Near each Rh atom the HO order parameter is suppressed, creating a hole in which local AFM order emerges as a result of competition. These local holes are created in the fabric of the HO…
We study URu$_{2-x}$Fe$_x$Si$_2$, in which two types of staggered phases compete at low temperature as the iron concentration $x$ is varied: the nonmagnetic "hidden order" (HO) phase below the critical concentration $x_c$, and unconventional antiferromagnetic (AF) phase above $x_c$. By using polarization resolved Raman spectroscopy, we detect a collective mode of pseudovector-like $A_{2g}$ symmetry whose energy continuously evolves with increasing $x$; it monotonically decreases in the HO phase until it vanishes at $x=x_c$, and then reappears with increasing energy in the AF phase. The mode's …
We report Knight shift experiments on the superconducting heavy electron material CeCoIn$_5$ that allow one to track with some precision the behavior of the heavy electron Kondo liquid in the superconducting state with results in agreement with BCS theory. An analysis of the $^{115}$In nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$ measurements under pressure reveals the presence of 2d magnetic quantum critical fluctuations in the heavy electron component that are a promising candidate for the pairing mechanism in this material. Our results are consistent with an an…
In this article, I study magnetic response of electron wavefunctions in a commensurate collinear antiferromagnet. I show that, at a special set of momenta, hidden anti-unitary symmetry protects Kramers degeneracy of Bloch eigenstates against a magnetic field, pointing transversely to staggered magnetization. Hence a substantial momentum dependence of the transverse g-factor in the Zeeman term, turning the latter into a spin-orbit coupling, that may be present in materials from chromium to borocarbides, cuprates, pnictides, as well as organic and heavy fermion conductors.
The heavy fermion metal CeB6 exhibits hidden order of antiferroquadrupolar (AFQ) type below T_Q=3.2K and subsequent antiferromagnetic (AFM) order at T_N=2.3K. It was interpreted as ordering of the quadrupole and dipole moments of a $Γ_8$ quartet of localised Ce $4f^1$ electrons. This established picture has been profoundly shaken by recent inelastic neutron scattering (G. Friemel et al., arXiv:1111.4151) that found the evolution of a feedback spin exciton resonance within the hidden order phase at the AFQ wave vector which is stabilized by the AFM order. We develop an alternative theory based …
Thermal expansion, magnetostriction and magnetization measurements under magnetic field and hydrostatic pressure were performed on a $\mathrm{UAu_{2}Si_{2}}$ single crystal. They revealed a large anisotropy of magnetoelastic properties manifested by prominent length changes leading to a collapse of the unit-cell volume accompanied by breaking the fourfold symmetry (similar to that in $\mathrm{URu_{2}Si_{2}}$ in the hidden-order state) in the antiferromagnetic state as consequences of strong magnetoelastic coupling. The magnetostriction curves measured at higher temperatures confirm a bulk char…
We present muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) and susceptibility measurements on single crystals of isoelectronically doped URu$_{2-x}$T$_x$Si$_2$ (T = Fe, Os) for doping levels up to 50\%. Zero Field (ZF) $μ$SR measurements show long-lived oscillations demonstrating that an antiferromagnetic state exists down to low doping levels for both Os and Fe dopants. The measurements further show an increase in the internal field with doping for both Fe and Os. Comparison of the local moment - hybridization crossover temperature from susceptibility measurements and our magnetic transition temperature shows tha…
Spontaneous, collective ordering of electronic degrees of freedom leads to second-order phase transitions that are characterized by an order parameter. The notion "hidden order" (HO) has recently been used for a variety of materials where a clear phase transition occurs to a phase without a known order parameter. The prototype example is the heavy-fermion compound URu2Si2 where a mysterious HO transition occurs at 17.5K. For more than twenty years this system has been studied theoretically and experimentally without a firm grasp of the underlying physics. Using state-of-the-art density-functio…
We show the existence of a new hidden topological order in $^{23}Na$ (F=1) Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) with antiferromagnetic interactions. Occurrence of this order is due to the confinement of hedgehogs in BEC where a spin Josephson effect takes place. However, a topological long range order is also argued to coexist with a short range spin correlation, as a result of topological order from disorder.
The effect of spatial modulation of the single-site anisotropy D on the ground state of the S=1 Heisenberg chains is investigated. In the case of period 2 modulation, it is found that the phase diagram contains the Haldane phase, large-D phase, Neel phase of udud-type and u0d0-type. It is shown that the hidden antiferromagnetic order in the Haldane phase compatible with the spatial modulation of D-term get frozen resulting in the emergence of various types of Neel orders. The investigation of the model with longer period D-modulation also confirms this picture.
We have performed the elastic neutron scattering experiments under uniaxial stress σalong the tetragonal [100], [110] and [001] directions for URu2Si2. For σ// [100] and [110], the antiferromagnetic moment μ_o is strongly enhanced from 0.02 μ_B (σ=0) to 0.22 μ_B (σ=2.5 kbar) at 1.5 K. The rate of increase dμ_o/dσis roughly estimated to be ~ 0.1 μ_B/kbar, which is much larger than that for the hydrostatic pressure (~ 0.025 μ_B/kbar). Above 2.5 kbar, μ_o shows a tendency to saturate similar to the behavior in the hydrostatic pressure. For σ// [001], on the other hand, μ_o shows only a slight inc…
