Sr$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$ (SCOC) is a model undoped cuprate with $I4/mmm$ crystallographic symmetry, and a simple magnetic space group $C_Amca$ with associated magnetic point group $mmm1'$. However, recent second harmonic spectroscopy in the antiferromagnetic phase has challenged this picture, suggesting instead a magnetic point group $4/mm'm'$ that co-exists with the antiferromagnetism and breaks the two orthogonal mirror planes containing the tetragonal $c$-axis. Here, we analyze the symmetry of SCOC in light of the second harmonic results, and discuss possible ground states that are consistent with the data.
We present the first demonstration of vortices in an electron-type cuprate superconductor, the highest $T_c$ (= 43 K) electron-type cuprate $Sr_{0.9}La_{0.1}CuO_2$. Our spatially resolved quasiparticle tunneling spectra reveal a hidden low-energy pseudogap inside the vortex core and unconventional spectral evolution with temperature and magnetic field. These results cannot be easily explained by the scenario of pure superconductivity in the ground state of high-$T_c$ superconductivity.
All previous cuprate superconductors display a set of common features: (i) vicinity to a Cu 3$d^{9}$ configuration; (ii) separated CuO$_2$ planes; (iii) superconductivity for doping $δ\sim$ 0.1$-$0.3. Recently [PNAS {\bf 24}, 12156 (2019)] challenged this picture by discovering "highly overdoped" superconducting Ba$_2$CuO$_{3+y}$. Using density-functional theory + dynamical mean-field theory, we reveal a bilayer structure of Ba$_2$CuO$_{3.2}$ of alternating quasi 2D and quasi 1D character. Correlations tune an inter-layer self-doping leading to an almost half-filled, strongly nested quasi 1D $…
Low energy spin excitations were investigated in the static stripe phase of La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 using elastic and inelastic neutron scattering on single crystals. For x = 1/8 in which long-range static stripe order exists, an energy gap of E_g = 4 meV exists in the excitation spectrum in addition to strong quasi-elastic, incommensurate spin fluctuations associated with the static stripes. When x increases, the spectral weight of the spin fluctuations shifts from the quasi-elastic continuum to the excitation spectrum above E_g. The dynamic correlation length as a function of energy and the temper…
Recent experiments on Pr$_{0.89}$LaCe$_{0.11}$CuO$_4$ observe an anisotropic spin-correlation gap and a nonmonotonic superconducting (SC) gap, which we analyze within the framework of a $t-t^{\prime}-t^{\prime\prime}-t^{\prime\prime\prime}-t^{iv}-U$ model with a $d_{x^2-y^2}$ pairing interaction including a third harmonic contribution. By introducing a realistic broadening of the quasiparticle spectrum to reflect small-angle scattering, our computations explain the experimental observations, especially the presence of a maximum in the leading edge gap in the vicinity of the hot-spots. Our anal…

Despite decades of intense researches, the enigmatic pseudo-gap (PG) phase of superconducting cuprates remains an unsolved mystery. In the last 15 years, various symmetry breakings in the PG state have been discovered, spanning an intra-unit cell (IUC) magnetism, preserving the lattice translational (LT) symmetry but breaking time-reversal symmetry and parity, and an additional incipient charge density wave breaking the LT symmetry upon cooling. However, none of these states can (alone) account for the partial gapping of the Fermi surface. Here we report a hidden LT-breaking magnetism uisng po…
We report a comprehensive x-ray scattering study of charge density wave (stripe) ordering in $\rm La_{2-x}Ba_xCuO_4 (x \approx 1/8)$, for which the superconducting $T_c$ is greatly suppressed. Strong superlattice reflections corresponding to static ordering of charge stripes were observed in this sample. The structural modulation at the lowest temperature was deduced based on the intensity of over 70 unique superlattice positions surveyed. We found that the charge order in this sample is described with one-dimensional charge density waves, which have incommensurate wave-vectors (0.23, 0, 0.5) …
Understanding the complex phase diagram of cuprate superconductors is an outstanding challenge. The most actively studied questions surround the nature of the pseudogap and strange metal states and their relationship to superconductivity. In contrast, there is general agreement that the low energy physics of the Mott insulating parent state is well captured by a two-dimensional spin $S$ = 1/2 antiferromagnetic (AFM) Heisenberg model. However, recent observations of a large thermal Hall conductivity in several parent cuprates appear to defy this simple model and suggest proximity to a magneto-c…
We examine the third-order non-linear optical response of a one-dimensional Mott insulator coupled with phonons. The Mott insulator is described by an extended Hubbard-Holstein model. The third harmonic generation (THG) of the model is calculated by dynamical density-matrix renormalization group. We find that the electron-phonon interaction enhances the intensity of THG if the on-site Coulomb interaction is comparable to the band width, but the enhancement is small for a realistic parameter value of a typical Mott insulator Sr$_2$CuO$_3$. The low-energy spin excitation does not contribute to t…
An anomalous optical second-harmonic generation (SHG) signal was previously reported in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ and attributed to a hidden odd-parity bulk magnetic state. Here we investigate the origin of this SHG signal using a combination of bulk magnetic susceptibility, magnetic-field-dependent SHG rotational anisotropy, and overlapping wide-field SHG imaging and atomic force microscopy measurements. We find that the anomalous SHG signal exhibits a two-fold rotational symmetry as a function of in-plane magnetic field orientation that is associated with a crystallographic distortion. We also show a ch…
The interplay of charge orders with superconductivity in underdoped cuprates at high magnetic fields ($H$) is an open question, and even the value of the upper critical field ($H_{c2}$), a measure of the strength of superconductivity, has been the subject of a long-term debate. We combined three complementary transport techniques on underdoped La$_{1.8-x}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ with a "striped" charge order and a low $H=0$ transition temperature $T_{c}^{0}$, to establish the $T-H$ phase diagram and reveal the ground states in CuO$_2$ planes: a superconductor, a wide regime of superconduct…
Layered 5$d$ transition iridium oxides, Sr$_2$(Ir,Rh)O$_4$, are described as unconventional Mott insulators with strong spin-orbit coupling. The undoped compound, Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, is a nearly ideal two-dimensional pseudospin-$1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet, similarly to the insulating parent compound of high-temperature superconducting copper oxides. Using polarized neutron diffraction, we here report a hidden magnetic order in pure and doped Sr$_2$(Ir,Rh)O$_4$, distinct from the usual antiferromagnetic pseudo-spin ordering. We find that time-reversal symmetry is broken while the lattice transl…
In this paper, we show that the theory of high $T_c$ superconductivity based on a microscopic model with $d$-density wave (DDW) scenario in the pseudogap phase is able to reproduce some of the most important features of the recent experimentally discovered hidden charge order in several families of Cuprates. In particular, by computing and comparing energies of charge orders of different modulation directions derived from a full microscopic theory with $d$-density wave scenario, the axial charge order $ϕ_{X(Y)}$ with wavevector $\mathbf{Q}=(Q_0,0)((0,Q_0))$ is shown to be unambiguously energet…
We have explored the hidden symmetries of a generic four-parameter nearest-neighbor spin model, allowed in honeycomb lattice compounds under trigonal compression. Our method utilizes a systematic algorithm to identify all dual transformations of the model that map the Hamiltonian on itself, changing the parameters and providing exact links between different points in its parameter space. We have found the complete set of points of hidden SU(2) symmetry at which seemingly highly anisotropic model can be mapped back on the Heisenberg model and inherits therefore its properties such as the presen…
The correlated spin dynamics and the temperature dependence of the correlation length $ξ(T)$ in two-dimensional quantum ($S=1/2$) Heisenberg antiferromagnets (2DQHAF) on square lattice are discussed in the light of experimental results of proton spin lattice relaxation in copper formiate tetradeuterate (CFTD). In this compound the exchange constant is much smaller than the one in recently studied 2DQHAF, such as La$_2$CuO$_4$ and Sr$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$. Thus the spin dynamics can be probed in detail over a wider temperature range. The NMR relaxation rates turn out in excellent agreement with a th…
One of the leading issues in high-$\rm T_c$ copper oxide superconductors is the origin of the pseudogap phase in the underdoped regime of their phase diagram. Using polarized neutron diffraction, a novel magnetic order has been identified as an hidden order parameter of the pseudogap as the transition temperature corresponds to what is expected for the pseudogap. The observed magnetic order preserves translational symmetry as predicted for orbital moments in the circulating current theory. Being now reported in three different cuprates familles, it appears as a universal phenomenon whatever th…
A rare combination of strong spin-orbit coupling and electron-electron correlations makes the iridate Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ a promising host for novel electronic phases of matter. The resemblance of its crystallographic, magnetic and electronic structures to La$_2$CuO$_4$, as well as the emergence upon doping of a pseudogap region and a low temperature $d$-wave gap, has particularly strengthened analogies to cuprate high-$T_c$ superconductors. However, unlike the cuprate phase diagram that features a plethora of broken symmetry phases in a pseudogap region that include charge density wa…

We report low-energy inelastic neutron scattering data of the paramagnetic (PM) to hidden-order (HO) phase transition at $T_0=17.5\,{\rm K}$ in URu$_2$Si$_2$. While confirming previous results for the HO and PM phases, our data reveal a pronounced wavevector dependence of low-energy excitations across the phase transition. To analyze the energy scans we employ a damped harmonic oscillator model containing a fit parameter $1/Γ$ which is expected to diverge at a second-order phase transition. Counter to expectations the excitations at $\vec{Q}_1=(1.44,0,0)$ show an abrupt step-like suppression o…
Phase transitions governed by spontaneous time reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB) have long been sought in many quantum systems, including materials with anomalous Hall effect (AHE), cuprate high temperature superconductors, Iridates and so on. However, experimentally identifying such a phase transition is extremely challenging because the transition is hidden from many experimental probes. Here, using zero-field muon spin relaxation (ZF-$μ$SR) technique, we observe strong TRSB signals below 70 K in the newly discovered kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$. The TRSB state emerges from the 2 x 2 …
