We consider the effects of impurities on the enigmatic hidden order (HO) state of the heavy-fermion material URu2Si2. In particular, we focus on local effects of Rh impurities as a tool to probe the suppression of the HO state. To study local properties we introduce a lattice free energy, where the time invariant HO order parameter "psi" and local antiferromagnetic (AFM) order parameter M are competing orders. Near each Rh atom the HO order parameter is suppressed, creating a hole in which local AFM order emerges as a result of competition. These local holes are created in the fabric of the HO state like in a Swiss cheese and "filled" with droplets of AFM order. We compare our analysis with recent NMR results on URu2Si2 doped with Rh and find good agreement with the data.
Based on low temperature resistivity, heat capacity and magnetization investigations we show that the unusually strong suppression of superconductivity in Lu$_x$Zr$_{1-x}$B$_{12}$ BSC-type superconductors in the range $x$$<$0.08 is caused by the emergence of static spin polarization in the vicinity of non-magnetic lutetium impurities. The analysis of received results points to a formation of static magnetic moments with $μ_{eff}$$\approx$$3μ_B$ per Lu-ion. The size of these spin polarized nanodomains was estimated to be about 5 $Å$.
We report the use of impurities to probe the hidden order parameter of the strongly correlated metal URu_2Si_2 below the transition temperature T_0 ~ 17.5 K. The nature of this order parameter has eluded researchers for more than two decades, but is accompanied by the development of a partial gap in the single particle density of states that can be detected through measurements of the electronic specific heat and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate. We find that impurities in the hidden order phase give rise to local patches of antiferromagnetism. An analysis of the coupling between the antif…
Substitution of Re for Ru in the heavy fermion compound URu2Si2 suppresses the hidden order transition and gives rise to ferromagnetism at higher concentrations. The hidden order transition of URu(2-x)Re(x)Si2, tracked via specific heat and electrical resistivity measurements, decreases in temperature and broadens, and is no longer observed for x>0.1. A critical scaling analysis of the bulk magnetization indicates that the ferromagnetic ordering temperature and ordered moment are suppressed continuously towards zero at a critical concentration of x = 0.15, accompanied by the additional suppres…
We study the effect of non-magnetic Zn$^{2+}$ (spin-$0$) and magnetic Ni$^{2+}$ (spin-$1$) impurities on the ground state and low-lying excitations of the quasi-one-dimensional spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet Sr$_{2}$CuO$_{3}$ using inelastic neutron scattering, specific heat and bulk magnetization measurements. We show that 1 \% Ni$^{2+}$ doping in Sr$_2$CuO$_3$ results in a sizable spin gap in the spinon excitations, analogous to the case of Ni-doped SrCuO$_2$ previously reported [ref. 1]. However, a similar level of Zn$^{2+}$ doping in SrCuO$_2$, investigated here for comparison, did …
We analyse here the role electrons on Anderson-U impurities play in superconductivity in a metal alloy. We find that phonon coupling at impurities counteracts the traditional effects which dominate T_c suppression in the non-magnetic limit. In some cases, we findt hat non-magnetic impurities can enhance T_c. In the Kondo limit, a Fermi liquid analysis reveals that it is the enhancement in the density of states arising from the Kondo resonancethat counteracts pair-weakening.
We study the impurity suppression of the critical temperature $T_c$ of the FeAs superconductors theoretically based on the the $\pm$s-wave pairing state of a two band model. The effects of non-magnetic and magnetic impurities are studied with the $\mathcal{T}$-matrix approximation, which can continuously treat impurity scattering from weak to strong coupling limit. We found that both magnetic and non-magnetic impurities suppress $T_c$ with a rate that is practically indistinguishable from the standard d-wave case despite a possibly large difference of the positive and negative s-wave order par…
The effects of spin-1 impurities introduced in dimerized antiferromagnetic spin chains are studied using Lanczos diagonalization and quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Firstly, the magnitude of the interaction between a Ni-ion replacing a Cu-ion is derived for the case study system Cu-O-Cu. Then, it is shown that the introduction of S=1 impurities leads to the suppression of the original spin gap of the dimerized system and to the enhancement of the antiferromagnetic correlations close to the impurity. These features are interpreted in terms of a valence bond picture of the ground state of both …
We employ {\it{ab-initio}} calculations to investigate the charge density waves in single-layer NbSe$_2$, and we explore how they are affected by transition metal atoms. Our calculations reproduce the observed orthorhombic phase in single-layer NbSe$_2$ in the clean limit, establishing the energy order between three different distorted structures, two consisting of triangular Nb-Nb clusters and a third, energetically unfavoured, consisting of hexagonal Nb-Nb clusters. Such energy order, in agreement with known experimental work, is reversed by the adsorption of Co and Mn, which favour the form…
Possible influence of spatially inhomogeneous distribution of strontium impurities on the temperature of antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering in ceramic samples La2-xSrxCuO4 has been revealed.
The discrepancy between the theoretically calculated and experimentally measured activation gaps in quantum Hall effect has long been a puzzle. We revisit this issue in the context of the $ν=1$ quantum Hall state, while also incorporating the skyrmion physics. We find that the finite width and the Landau level mixing (LLM) effects are not sufficient to explain the observed activation gap. We further show that the presence of charged impurities located adjacent to the quantum well can cause a significant reduction in the activation gap, while also causing a suppression of the skyrmion size.
The impurity concentration dependence of superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ is studied within the framework of two band model of order parameter anisotropy. Both intraband and interband electron scattering by nonmagnetic and magnetic impurities are taken into account. It is demonstrated that at various values of model parameters both types of impurity concentration dependence of $T_c$ are possible: weak dependence typical of the model with s-wave order parameter and strong suppression of $T_c$ by impurities with critical impurity concentration at which $T_c=0$. It is found that in so…
We propose carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with magnetic impurities as a versatile platform to achieve unconventional Kondo physics, where the CNT bath is gapped by the spin-orbit interaction and surface curvature. While the strong-coupling phase is inaccessible for the special case of half-filled impurities in neutral armchair CNTs, the system in general can undergo quantum phase transitions to the Kondo ground state. The resultant position-specific phase diagrams are investigated upon variation of the CNT radius, chirality, and carrier doping, revealing several striking features, e.g., the existence…
The $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chain compound Sr$_2$CuO$_3$ doped with $1 \%$ and $2 \%$ of Ni impurities has been studied by means of $^{63}$Cu nuclear magnetic resonance. A strong decrease of the spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$ at low temperatures points toward a spin gap, while a stretching exponent $λ< 1$ and a frequency dependence of $T_1^{-1}$ indicate that this spin gap varies spatially and should rather be characterized as a spin pseudogap. The magnitude of the spin pseudogap scales with doping level. Our results therefore evidence the finite-size character of th…
We studied in detail the low temperature/high magnetic field phases of URu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ single crystals with specific heat, magnetocaloric effect, and magnetoresistance in magnetic fields up to 45 T. Data obtained down to 0.5 K, and extrapolated to T = 0, show a suppression of the hidden order phase at H$_{o}$(0) = 35.9 $\pm$ 0.35 T and the appearance of a new phase for magnetic fields in excess of H$_{1}$(0) = 36.1 $\pm$ 0.35 T observed \textit{only} at temperatures lower than 6 K. In turn, complete suppression of this high field state is attained at a critical magnetic field H$_{2}$(0) = 39…
The charge dynamics of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$TM$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ (TM = Mn and Cr) has been investigated by optical spectroscopy. It was found that in addition to the strong suppression of the coherent charge transport, the magnetic impurity induces a novel spectral feature related to the carrier localization in the far-infrared region above the antiferromagnetic transition temperature. We attribute it to the cooperative effect between conduction electrons and local magnetic order induced by magnetic impurities. The present results demonstrate that Mn and Cr are not conventional magnetic pair-breakers in …
Planar macroscopic magnetic tunnel junctions exhibit well defined zero bias anomalies when a thin layer of ferromagnetic CoFe(B) nanodots is inserted within a MgO based tunnel barrier. The conductance curves exhibit a single and a double peak, respectively, for anti-parallel and parallel alignment of the magnetizations of the electrodes which sandwich the tunnel barrier. This leads to a suppression of the tunneling magnetoresistance near zero bias. We show that the double peak structure indicates that the zero-bias anomaly is spin-split due to a magnetic exchange interaction between the magnet…
Many cuprate superconductors possess an unusual charge-ordered phase that is characterized by an approximate $d_{x^2-y^2}$ intra-unit cell form factor and a finite modulation wavevector $\bq^\ast$. We study the effects impurities on this charge ordered phase via a single-band model in which bond order is the analogue of charge order in the cuprates. Impurities are assumed to be pointlike and are treated within the self-consistent t-matrix approximation (SCTMA). We show that suppression of bond order by impurities occurs through the local disruption of the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ form factor near individ…
The Charge-density-wave(CDW) in 2H-NbSe2(TCDW ~ 33 K), which coexists with superconductivity(Tc = 7.2 K), is investigated using Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy as a function of temperature. Across TCDW, energy and momentum(k) distribution curves show changes associated with the primary and secondary CDW vectors. The CDW is due to hidden charge order occurring at specific k-points on Fermi surfaces in the 2-dimensional Brillouin zone(2D BZ) with spectral weight suppression, but no gap formation. The study rules out nesting in the 2D BZ and the van Hove singularity driven CDW transitio…
Recent scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) experiments on underdoped cuprates have displayed modulations in the local electronic density of states which are centered on a Cu-O-Cu bond (Kohsaka et. al., cond-mat/0703309). As a paradigm of the pinning of such bond-centered ordering in strongly correlated systems, we present the theory of valence bond solid (VBS) correlations near a single impurity in a square lattice antiferromagnet. The antiferromagnet is assumed to be in the vicinity of a quantum transition from a magnetically ordered Neel state to a spin-gap state with long-range VBS order. …
We give a theoretical analysis of published experimental studies of the effects of impurities and disorder on the superconducting transition temperature, T_c, of the organic molecular crystals kappa-ET_2X and beta-ET_2X (where ET is bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene and X is an anion eg I_3). The Abrikosov-Gorkov (AG) formula describes the suppression of T_c both by magnetic impurities in singlet superconductors, including s-wave superconductors and by non-magnetic impurities in a non-s-wave superconductor. We show that various sources of disorder lead to the suppression of T_c as describe…
Nonmagnetic impurities in d-wave superconductors cause strong local suppressions of the order parameter. We investigate the observable effects of the scatterigng off such suppressions in bulk samples by treating the order parameter "hole" as a pointlike off-diagonal scatterer treated within a self-consistent t-matrix approximation. Strong scattering potentials lead to a finite-energy spectral feature in the d-wave "impurity band", the observable effects of which include enhanced low-temperature microwave power absorption and a stronger sensitivity of the London penetration depth to disorder th…
We describe here recent inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the heavy fermion compound URu2Si2 realized in order to clarify the nature of the hidden order (HO) phase which occurs below T_0 = 17.5 K at ambient pressure. The choice was to measure at a given pressure P where the system will go, by lowering the temperature, successively from paramagnetic (PM) to HO and then to antiferromagnetic phase (AF). Furthermore, in order to verify the selection of the pressure, a macroscopic detection of the phase transitions was also achieved in situ via its thermal expansion response detected by a…
Despite several decades of both experimental and theoretical work the nature of the hidden order transition at THO = 17.5 K in URu2Si2 remains enigmatic. We report here low field DC magnetization as well as AC susceptibility measurements performed on single crystals with field along the c-axis. A peak in the first order AC susceptibility is observed at T=16 K in close proximity to the well known change in slope at THO=17.5 K. Third order susceptibility measurements on the other hand reveal a signature only at 16 K with no discernible change at THO. However, both transitions are visible in the …
We report 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance measurements of single crystals and aligned powders of URu2Si2 under pressure in the hidden order and paramagnetic phases. We find that the Knight shift decreases with applied pressure, consistent with previous measurements of the static magnetic susceptibility. Previous measurements of the spin lattice relaxation time revealed a partial suppression of the density of states below 30 K. This suppression persists under pressure, and the onset temperature is mildly enhanced.
We have performed ultrasonic measurements on single-crystalline URu2Si2 with pulsed magnetic fields, in order to check for possible lattice instabilities due to the hybridized state and the hidden-order state of this compound. The elastic constant (C11-C12)/2, which is associated with a response to the Γ3-type symmetry-breaking (orthorhombic) strain field, shows a three-step increase at H > 35 T for H || c at low temperatures, where successive meta-magnetic transitions are observed in the magnetization. We discovered a new fact that the absolute change of the softening of (C11-C12)/2 in the te…
We propose the magnetic exciton mediated superconductivity occurring in the enigmatic hidden-order phase of URu2Si2. The characteristic of the massive collective excitation observed only in the hidden-order phase is well reproduced by the antiferro hexadecapole ordering model as the trace of the dispersive crystalline-electric-field excitation. The disappearance of the superconductivity in the high-pressure antiferro magnetic phase can naturally be understood by the sudden suppression of the magnetic-exciton intensity. The analysis of the momentum dependence of the magnetic-exciton mode leads …
High-quality K(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals have been grown by using KAs flux method. Instead of increasing the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ through electron doping, we find that Co impurities rapidly suppress $T_{\rm c}$ down to zero at only $x \approx$ 0.04. Such an effective suppression of $T_{\rm c}$ by impurities is quite different from that observed in Ba$_{0.5}$K$_{0.5}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ with multiple nodeless superconducting gaps. Thermal conductivity measurements in zero field show that the residual linear term $κ_0/T$ only change slightly with $3.4\%$ …
Superconducting transition temperature Tc of NazCo1-xMxO2.yH2O has been studied for M=Ir and Ga, which can substitute for Co. It has been found that Tc is suppressed by the M-atom doping. The decreasing rates |dTc/dx| are of the order of 1 K/% and too small to be explained by the pair breaking mechanism for the anisotropic order parameters by non-magnetic impurities. Brief arguments are given on possible origins of the Tc suppression.
