We study how the non-Fermi-liquid nature of the overscreened multi-channel Kondo impurity model affects the response to a BCS pairing term that, in the absence of the impurity, opens a gap $Δ$. We find that non-Fermi liquid features do persist even at finite $Δ$: the local density of states lacks coherence peaks, the states in the continuum above the gap are unconventional, and the boundary entropy is a non-monotonic function of temperature. Even more surprisingly, we also find that the low-energy spectrum in the limit $Δ\to 0$ actually does not correspond to the spectrum strictly at $Δ=0$. In particular, the $Δ\to 0$ ground state is an orbitally degenerate spin-singlet, while it is an orbital singlet with a residual spin degeneracy at $Δ=0$. In addition, there are fractionalized spin-1/2 sub-gap excitations whose energy in units of $Δ$ tends towards a finite and universal value when $Δ\to 0$; as if the universality of the anomalous power-law exponents that characterise the overscreened Kondo effect turned into universal energy ratios when the scale invariance is broken by $Δ\not=0$. This intriguing phenomenon can be explained by the renormalisation flow towards the overscreened fixed point and the gap cutting off the orthogonality catastrophe singularities.
We study the effects of four-fermion interaction and impurity on the low-energy states of two-dimensional semi-Dirac materials by virtue of the unbiased renormalization group approach. The coupled flow equations that govern the energy-dependent evolutions of all correlated interaction parameters are derived after taking into account one-loop corrections from the interplay between four-fermion interaction and impurity. Whether and how four-fermion interaction and impurity influence the low-energy properties of two-dimensional semi-Dirac materials are discreetly explored and addressed attentivel…
Investigations on the relationship between $T_c$ and the superconducting gap under magnetic and non-magnetic impurity substitutions in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$
We employ the periodic Anderson model with superconducting correlations in the conduction band at half filling to study the behavior of the in-gap bands in a heterostructure consisting of a molecular layer deposited on the surface of a conventional superconductor. We use the dynamical mean-field theory to map the lattice model on the superconducting single impurity model with self-consistently determined bath and use the continuous-time hybridization expansion (CT-HYB) quantum Monte Carlo and the iterative perturbation theory (IPT) as solvers for the impurity problem. We present phase diagrams…
We consider an electron gas, both in two (2D) and three (3D) dimensions, interacting with quenched impurities and phonons within leading order finite-temperature many body perturbation theories, calculating the electron self-energies, spectral functions, and momentum distribution functions at finite temperatures. The resultant spectral function is in general highly non-Lorentzian, indicating that the system is not a Fermi liquid in the usual sense. The calculated momentum distribution function cannot be approximated by a Fermi function at any temperature, providing a rather simple example of a…
Quantum impurity models are prevalent throughout many body physics, providing some prime examples of strongly correlated systems. Aside from being of great interest in themselves they can provide deep insight into the effects of strong correlations in general. The classic example is the Kondo model wherein a magnetic impurity is screened at low energies by a non interacting metallic bath. Here we consider a magnetic impurity coupled to a quantum wire with pairing interaction which dynamically generates a mass gap. Using Bethe Ansatz we solve the system exactly finding that it exhibits both scr…
Non-magnetic impurities in iron-based superconductors can provide an important tool to understand the pair symmetry and they can influence significantly the transport and the superconducting behaviour. Here, we present a study of the role of strong impurity potential in the Fe plane, induced by Cu substitution, on the electronic and superconducting properties of single crystals of FeSe. The addition of Cu quickly suppresses both the nematic and superconducting states, and increases the residual resistivity due to enhanced impurity scattering. Using magnetotransport data up to 35 T for a small …
We derive and apply a general scheme for mapping a setup consisting of a half-filled single level quantum dot coupled to one normal metallic and two superconducting phase-biased leads onto an ordinary half-filled single impurity Anderson model with single modified tunneling density of states. The theory allows for the otherwise unfeasible application of the standard numerical renormalization group and enables to obtain phase-dependent local spectral properties as well as phase-dependent induced pairing and Josephson current. The resulting transport properties match well with the numerically ex…
We investigate the ground-state energy of a one-dimensional Fermi gas with two bosonic impurities. We consider spinless fermions with no fermion-fermion interactions. The fermion-impurity and impurity-impurity interactions are modelled with Dirac delta functions. First, we study the case where impurity and fermions have equal masses, and the impurity-impurity two-body interaction is identical to the fermion-impurity interaction, such that the system is solvable with the Bethe ansatz. For attractive interactions, we find that the energy of the impurity-impurity subsystem is below the energy of …
We solve the problem of a magnetic impurity coupled to a U(1) quantum spin liquid with spinon Fermi surface and compute the impurity spectral function. Using the slave rotor mean field approach combined with gauge field fluctuations, we find that a peak located at the top of the lower Hubbard band and one at the bottom of the upper Hubbard band can emerge in the impurity spectral function. The peaks at the Hubbard band edges arise from the gauge field fluctuations induced spinon chargon binding inside the spinon Kondo screening cloud of the magnetic impurity. For a magnetic impurity embedded i…
Impurities coupled to superconductors offer a controlled platform to understand the interplay between superconductivity, many-body interactions, and non-equilibrium physics. In the equilibrium situation, local interactions at the impurity induce a transition between the spin-singlet to the spin-doublet ground state, resulting in a supercurrent sign reversal ($0-π$ transition). In this work, we apply the exact time-dependent density matrix renormalization group method to simulate the transient dynamics of such superconducting systems. We also use a perturbative approximation to analyze their pr…
Observation of momentum-confined in-gap impurity state in Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$: evidence for anti-phase $s_{\pm}$ pairing
We study spinless fermions with repulsive nearest-neighbor interactions perturbed by an impurity particle or a local potential quench. Using the numerical time-evolving block decimation method and a simplified analytic model, we show that the pertubations create a soliton-antisoliton pair. If solitons are already present in the bath, the two excitations have a drastically different dynamics: The antisoliton does not annihilate with the solitons and is therefore confined close to its origin while the soliton excitation propagates. We discuss the consequences for experiments with ultracold gases…
Triple point fermions are elusive electronic excitations that generalize Dirac and Weyl modes beyond the conventional high energy paradigm. Yet, finding real materials naturally hosting these excitations at the Fermi energy has remained challenging. Here we show that twisted bilayer graphene is a versatile platform to realize robust triple point fermions in two dimensions. In particular, we establish that the introduction of localized impurities lifts one of the two degenerate Dirac cones, yielding triple point fermions at charge neutrality. Furthermore, we show that the valley polarization is…
We investigate a modified Anderson model at the large-$N$ limit, where Coulomb interaction is replaced by Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev random interaction. The resistivity of conduction electron $ρ_{c}$ has a minimum value around temperature $\widetilde{T}_{K}$, which is similar to the Kondo system, but the impurity electron's density of state $A_{d}(ω)$ elucidates no sharp-peak like Kondo resonance around the Fermi surface. The impurity electron's entropy $S_{d}$ and specific heat capacity $C_{\textrm{v}}$ illustrate a crossover from Fermi liquid to the non-Fermi liquid. The system is a non-Fermi liquid …
We present a systematic investigation of the effects of "nonmagnetic" impurities on the $s$-wave BCS-BEC crossover in atomic Fermi gases within a pairing fluctuation theory. Both pairing and impurity scattering $T$-matrices are treated self-consistently at the same time. While the system is less sensitive to impurity scattering in the Born limit, for strong impurity scatterers, both the frequency and the gap function are highly renormalized, leading to significant suppression of the superfluid $T_c$, the order parameter and the superfluid density. We also find the formation of impurity bands a…
