Flag domains are open orbits of real semisimple Lie groups in flag manifolds of their complexification. A special class of flag domains constitute the classifying spaces for variations of Hodge structure, namely period domains or more generally Mumford-Tate domains. In this paper we classify all proper, equivariant embeddings of a flag domain of Hodge type, required to satisfy a certain transversality condition, in a period domain and show that any such flag domain must be a Hermitian symmetric space of non-compact type of classical type. In particular, the classification describes also the proper, equivariant embeddings of a flag domain of Hodge type in a period domain satisfying Griffiths transversality.
Period domains, the classifying spaces for (pure, polarized) Hodge structures, and more generally Mumford-Tate domains, arise as open $G_{\mathbb{R}}$--orbits in flag varieties $G/P$. We investigate Hodge--theoretic aspects of the geometry and representation theory associated with these flag varieties. In particular, we relate the Griffiths--Yukawa coupling to the variety of lines on $G/P$ (under a minimal homogeneous embedding), construct a large class of polarized $G_{\mathbb{R}}$--orbits in $G/P$, and compute the associated Hodge--theoretic boundary components. An emphasis is placed through…
We study the toric degeneration of Weyl group translated Schubert divisors of a partial flag variety of Lie type A via Gelfand-Cetlin polytopes. We propose a conjecture that Schubert varieties of appropriate dimensions intersect transversally up to translation by Weyl group elements, and verify it in various cases, including complex Grassmannian Gr(2, n) and complete flag variety Fl_4.
We define quotient stacks of "zip flags". They form towers above the stack of $G$-zips introduced by Moonen, Pink, Wedhorn and Ziegler. We define a stratification on the stack of zip flags, and prove that it is principally pure, under a certain assumption on $p$. The fiber product with a Shimura variety of Hodge-type is a generalization of flag spaces considered by Ekedahl-Van der Geer. For large $p$, we prove that all strata are affine. We prove a theorem on discreteness of fibers for finite morphisms between stacks of $G$-zips. This allows us to prove that the zip stratification is principal…
We give a short, geometric proof of Graham's theorem on positivity in the equivariant cohomology of a flag variety, based on a transversality argument.
Hodge representations were introduced by Green-Griffiths-Kerr to classify the Hodge groups of polarized Hodge structures, and the corresponding Mumford-Tate subdomains of a period domain. The purpose of this article is to provide an exposition of how, given a fixed period domain $\mathcal{D}$, to enumerate the Hodge representations corresponding to Mumford-Tate subdomains $D \subset \mathcal{D}$. After reviewing the well-known classical cases that $\mathcal{D}$ is Hermitian symmetric (weight $n=1$, and weight $n=2$ with $p_g = h^{2,0}=1$), we illustrate this in the case that $\mathcal{D}$ is t…
We construct group-theoretical generalizations of the Hasse invariant on strata closures of the stacks $G$-Zip$^μ$. Restricting to zip data of Hodge type, we obtain a group-theoretical Hasse invariant on every Ekedahl-Oort stratum closure of a general Hodge-type Shimura variety. A key tool is the construction of a stack of zip flags $G$-ZipFlag$^μ$, fibered in flag varieties over $G$-Zip$^μ$. It provides a simultaneous generalization of the "classical case" homogeneous complex manifolds studied by Griffiths-Schmid and the "flag space" for Siegel varieties studied by Ekedahl-van der Geer. Four …
A variation of Hodge structure is a horizontal holomorphic mapping into a flag domain D; here "horizontal" indicates that the image of the map satisfies a system of partial differential equations known as the infinitesimal period relation (or Griffiths' transversality condition). Such maps arise as (lifts of) period mappings associated with families of polarized algebraic manifolds. The celebrated Nilpotent Orbit and SL(2)-Orbit Theorems of Schmid describe the asymptotic behavior of a variation of Hodge structure, and play a fundamental role in the analysis of singularities of the period mappi…
We prove that a non-classical flag domain is pseudoconcave if it satisfies a certain condition on the root system. Moreover, we prove that every point in a one-codimensional real boundary orbit of a non-classical period domains is a pseudoconcave boundary point if it satisfies a certain Hodge-theoretical condition.
Flag domains are open orbits of real semisimple Lie groups in flag manifolds of their complexifications. Certain group theoretically defined compact complex submanifolds, which are regarded as cycles, are of basic importance for their complex geometric and representation theoretic properties. It is known that there are optimal Schubert varieties which intersect the cycles transversally in finitely many points and in particular determine them in homology. Here we give a precise description of these Schubert varieties in terms of certain subsets of the Weyl group and compute their total number f…
This paper is concerned with the study of spaces of naturally defined cycles associated to SL(n,R)-flag domains. These are compact complex submanifolds in open orbits of real semisimple Lie groups in flag domains of their complexification. It is known that there are optimal Schubert varieties which intersect the cycles transversally in finitely many points and in particular determine them in homology. Here we give a precise description of these Schubert varieties in terms of certain subsets of the Weyl group and compute their total number. Furthermore, we give an explicit description of the po…
Let $n$ be a positive even integer and $d$ a positive integer . To every complete family $Z$ of n dimensional degree d hypersurfaces in the projective space with isolated A-D-E singularities we construct according to an idea of Carlson-Toledo a Deligne-Mumford stack $\bar Z$ whose moduli space is $Z$ such that the monodromy representation extends. We study the corresponding periods mapping and establish an infinitesimal Torelli theorem along the isosingular strata of lZ$ under transversality assumptions. We apply this result to prove Steiness of the universal covering space of $\bar Z$.
The basic admissible locus $\mathcal{F}(G, μ, b)^a$ inside the flag variety $\mathcal{F}(G, μ)$, attached to a reductive group $G$ with a minuscule cocharacter $μ$ of $G$, is a $p$-adic analogue of the complex analytic period spaces. It has an algebraic approximation $\mathcal{F}(G, μ, b)^{wa}$ inside the flag variety, called the weakly admissible locus. On the flag variety $\mathcal{F}(G, μ)$, we have the Newton stratification which has the admissible locus as its unique open stratum. In this paper, we study the relation between the Newton strata and the weakly admissible locus. We show that …
The main result of this paper is the existence of Galois representations associated with the mod $p$ (or mod $p^m$) cohomology of the locally symmetric spaces for $\GL_n$ over a totally real or CM field, proving conjectures of Ash and others. Following an old suggestion of Clozel, recently realized by Harris-Lan-Taylor-Thorne for characteristic 0 cohomology classes, one realizes the cohomology of the locally symmetric spaces for $\GL_n$ as a boundary contribution of the cohomology of symplectic or unitary Shimura varieties, so that the key problem is to understand torsion in the cohomology of …
For a simple algebraic group $G$ we study the space $Q$ of Quasimaps from the projective line $C$ to the flag variety of $G$. We prove that the global Intersection Cohomology of $Q$ carries a natural pure Tate Hodge structure, and compute its generating function. We define an action of the Langlands dual Lie algebra $g^L$ on this cohomology. We present a new geometric construction of the universal enveloping algebra $U(n^L_+)$ of the nilpotent subalgebra of $g^L$. It is realized in the Ext-groups of certain perverse sheaves on Quasimaps' spaces, and it is equipped with a canonical basis number…
We revisit the Harder-Narasimhan stratification on a minuscule $p$-adic flag variety, by the theory of modifications of $G$-bundles on the Fargues-Fontaine curve. We compare the Harder-Narasimhan strata with the Newton strata introduced by Caraiani-Scholze. As a consequence, we get further equivalent conditions in terms of $p$-adic Hodge-Tate period domains for fully Hodge-Newton decomposable pairs. Moreover, we generalize these results to arbitrary cocharacters case by considering the associated $B_{dR}^+$-affine Schubert varieties. Applying Hodge-Tate period maps, our constructions give appl…
Consider a Shimura variety of Hodge type admitting a smooth integral model S at an odd prime p>3. Consider its perfectoid cover S(p^\infty) and the Hodge-Tate period map introduced by A. Caraiani and P. Scholze. We compare the pull-back to S(p^\infty) of the Ekedahl-Oort stratification on the mod p special fiber of S and the pull back to S(p^\infty) of the fine Deligne-Lusztig stratification on the mod p special fiber of the flag variety which is the target of the Hodge-Tate period map. An application to the non-emptiness of Ekedhal-Oort strata is provided.
This is partly a survey article on nonabelian Hodge theory, but we also give proofs of results that have only been announced elsewhere. In the introduction we discuss a wide range of recent work on this subject and give some references. In the body of the paper, we discuss Corlette's nonabelian Hodge theorem, Hitchin's quaternionic structure on the moduli space of representations of $π_1(X)$ (for a compact Kähler manifold $X$), and Deligne's construction of the resulting twistor space. We then mention the interpretation of Deligne's space of $λ$-connections as the Hodge filtration of the nonab…
We prove the conjectures of Graham-Kumar and Griffeth-Ram concerning the alternation of signs in the structure constants for torus-equivariant K-theory of generalized flag varieties G/P. These results are immediate consequences of an equivariant homological Kleiman transversality principle for the Borel mixing spaces of homogeneous spaces, and their subvarieties, under a natural group action with finitely many orbits. The computation of the coefficients in the expansion of the equivariant K-class of a subvariety in terms of Schubert classes is reduced to an Euler characteristic using the homol…
We apply our theory of partial flag spaces developed in previous articles to study a group-theoretical generalization of the canonical filtration of a truncated Barsotti-Tate group of level 1. As an application, we determine explicitly the normalization of the Zariski closures of Ekedahl-Oort strata of Shimura varieties of Hodge-type as certain closed coarse strata in the associated partial flag spaces.
Using geometrical correspondences induced by projections and two-steps flag varieties, and a generalization of Orlov's projective bundle theorem, we relate the Hodge structures and derived categories of subvarieties of different Grassmannians. We construct isomorphisms between Calabi-Yau subHodge structures of hyperplane sections of Gr(3,n) and those of other varieties arising from symplectic Grassmannian and/or congruences of lines or planes. Similar results hold conjecturally for Calabi-Yau subcategories: we describe in details the Hodge structures and give partial categorical results relati…
Using a transversality argument, we demonstrate the positivity of certain coefficients in the equivariant cohomology and K-theory of a generalized flag manifold. This strengthens earlier equivariant positivity theorems (of Graham and Anderson-Griffeth-Miller) by further constraining the roots which can appear in these coefficients. As an application, we deduce that structure constants for comultiplication in the equivariant K-theory of an infinite flag manifold exhibit an unusual positivity property, establishing conjectures of Lam-Lee-Shimozono. Along the way, we present alternative formulas …
