Hecke studies the distribution of fractional parts of quadratic irrationals with Fourier expansion of Dirichlet series. This method is generalized by Behnke and Ash-Friedberg, to study the distribution of the number of totally positive integers of given trace in a general totally real number field of any degree. When the field is cubic, we show that the asymptotic behavior of a weighted Diophantine sum is related to the structure of the unit group. The main term can be expressed in terms of Grössencharacter $L$-functions.
Let ${\{K_m\}_{m\geq 4}}$ be the family of non-normal totally real cubic number fields defined by the irreducible cubic polynomial $f_m(x)=x^3-mx^2-(m+1)x-1$, where $m$ is an integer with $m\geq 4$. In this paper, we will give a class number one criterion for $K_m$.
We prove that all elliptic curves defined over totally real cubic fields are modular. This builds on previous work of Freitas, Le Hung and Siksek, who proved modularity of elliptic curves over real quadratic fields, as well as recent breakthroughs due to Thorne and to Kalyanswamy.
Let $d$ be a positive fundamental discriminant, and let $\mathcal{C}_{d}$ be the set of isomorphism classes of cubic number fields of discriminant $d$. For each $K \in \mathcal{C}_{d}$, we construct a weight 1 modular form $f_{K}$ with level $3^{\pm 1}d$ and nebentypus $\left( \frac{-3^{\pm 1}d}{\cdot} \right)$. We show that the form $f_{K}$ completely determines the field $K$. Moreover, we show that $\{f_{K} : K \in \mathcal{C}_{d}\}$ is a linearly independent set.
The number of non-isomorphic cubic fields L sharing a common discriminant d(L) = d is called the multiplicity m = m(d) of d. For an assigned value of d, these fields are collected in a multiplet M(d) = (L(1) ,..., L(m)). In this paper, the information in all existing tables of totally real cubic number fields L with positive discriminants d(L) < 10000000 is extended by computing the differential principal factorization types tau(L) in (alpha1, alpha2, alpha3, beta1, beta2, gamma, delta1, delta2, epsilon) of the members L of each multiplet M(d) of non-cyclic fields, a new kind of arithmetical i…
Given positive real numbers, we prove two inequalities involving their potential energy and their power sums. We also prove an inequality involving the energy and the discriminant and apply it to deduce a result on totally positive irreducible polynomials.
We study the structure of the codifferent and of additively indecomposable integers in families of totally real cubic fields. We prove that for cubic orders in these fields, the minimal trace of indecomposable integers multiplied by totally positive elements of the codifferent can be arbitrarily large. This is very surprising, as in the so far studied examples of quadratic and simplest cubic fields, this minimum is 1 and 2. We further give sharp upper bounds on the norms of indecomposable integers in our families.
Let $K=\mathbb Q(\sqrt D)$ be a real quadratic field. We consider the additive semigroup $\mathcal O_K^+(+)$ of totally positive integers in $K$ and determine its generators (indecomposable integers) and relations; they can be nicely described in terms of the periodic continued fraction for $\sqrt D$. We also characterize all uniquely decomposable integers in $K$ and estimate their norms. Using these results, we prove that the semigroup $\mathcal O_K^+(+)$ completely determines the real quadratic field $K$.
We prove that the ring of integers in the totally real cubic subfield $K^{(49)}$ of the cyclotomic field $\mathbb{Q}(ζ_7)$ has Pythagoras number equal to $4$. This is the smallest possible value for a totally real number field of odd degree. Moreover, we determine which numbers are sums of integral squares in this field, and use this knowledge to construct a diagonal universal quadratic form in five variables.
Algebraic integers in totally imaginary quartic number fields are not discrete in the complex plane under a fixed embedding, which makes it impossible to visualize all integers in the plane, unlike the quadratic imaginary algebraic integers. In this note we consider a naturally occurring discrete subset of the algebraic integers with similar properties as lattices. For the fifth cyclotomic field, we investigate those integers with absolute values under a fixed embedding in a given bound. We show that such integers form a discrete set in the complex plane. It is observed that this subset has qu…
In totally real number fields, we characterize the rings of $S$-integers (obtained by inverting a rational integer $m$) such that all their totally positive elements are represented as a sum of squares. We further obtain partial answers to the question: when are all the totally positive algebraic integers that are divisible by $m$ represented as a sum of squares?
In this paper we introduce a new modification of the Jacobi-Perron algorithm in three dimensional case and prove its periodicity for the case of totally-real conjugate cubic vectors. This provides an answer in the totally-real case to the question son algebraic periodicity for cubic irrationalities posed in 1849 by Ch.~Hermite.
In arXiv:1302.4423, Salez proved that every totally real algebraic integer is the eigenvalue of some tree. We define the "arboreal height" of a totally real algebraic integer $λ$ to be the minimal height of a rooted tree having $λ$ as an eigenvalue. In this paper, we prove several results about totally real algebraic integers of arboreal height $2$: We show that all real quadratic integers have arboreal height $\le 2$. We characterize the totally real cubic integers of arboreal height $2$. Finally, we prove that every totally irrational real number field is generated (as a ring over $\mathbb{Q…
C.J. Smyth and later Flammang studied the spectrum of the Weil height in the field of all totally real numbers, establishing both lower and upper bounds for the limit infimum of the height of all totally real integers and determining isolated values of the height. We remove the hypothesis that we consider only integers and establish an lower bound on the limit infimum of the height for all totally real numbers. Our proof relies on a quantitative equidistribution theorem for numbers of small height.
We show that if $K$ is a monogenic, primitive, totally real number field, that contains units of every signature, then there exists a lower bound for the rank of integer universal quadratic forms defined over $K$. In particular, we extend the work of Blomer and Kala, to show that there exist infinitely many totally real cubic number fields that do not have a universal quadratic form of a given rank defined over them. For the real quadratic number fields with a unit of negative norm, we show that the minimal rank of a universal quadratic form goes to infinity as the discriminant of the number f…
We explain how a slight variant in the use of our recursive algorithm leads to improve the known lower bounds for the absolute trace of a totally positive algebraic integer. We also link the absolute trace of a totally positive algebraic integer and the absolute trace of a totally positive reciprocal integer.
We prove that approximately $96.23\%$ of cubic fields, ordered by discriminant, have genus number one, and we compute the exact proportion of cubic fields with a given genus number. We also compute the average genus number. Finally, we show that a positive proportion of totally real cubic fields with genus number one fail to be norm-Euclidean.
We count various classes of algebraic integers of fixed degree by their largest absolute value. The classes of integers considered include all algebraic integers, Perron numbers, totally real integers, and totally complex integers. We give qualitative and quantitative results concerning the distribution of Perron numbers, answering in part a question of W. Thurston.
To each non totally real cubic extension $K$ of $\Q$ and to each generator $α$ of the cubic field $K$, we attach a family of cubic Thue equations, indexed by the units of $K$, and we prove that this family of cubic Thue equations has only a finite number of integer solutions, by giving an effective upper bound for these solutions.
Let $E$ be a modular elliptic curve over a totally real cubic field. We have a cubic-triple product motive over $\mathbb{Q}$ constructed from $E$ through multiplicative induction; it is of rank $8$. We show that, under certain assumptions on $E$, the non-vanishing of the central critical value of the $L$-function attached to the motive implies that the dimension of the associated Bloch-Kato Selmer group is $0$.
The numbers of representations of totally positive integers as sums of three integer squares in $\mathbf{Q}(\sqrt{3})$ and in $\mathbf{Q}(\sqrt{17})$, are studied by using Shimura lifting map of Hilbert modular forms. We show the following results. In case of $\mathbf{Q}(\sqrt{3})$, a totally positive integer $a+b\sqrt{3}$ is represented as a sum of three integer squares if and only if $b$ is even. In case of $\mathbf{Q}(\sqrt{17})$, a totally positive integer is represented as a sum of three integer squares if and only if it is not in the form $π_{2}^{2e}π_{2}'^{2e'}μ$ with $μ\equiv7\pmod{π_{…
For an algebraic number field $K$ with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_{K}$, an important subgroup of the ideal class group $Cl_{K}$ is the {\it Pólya group}, denoted by $Po(K)$, which measures the failure of the $\mathcal{O}_{K}$-module $Int(\mathcal{O}_{K})$ of integer-valued polynomials on $\mathcal{O}_{K}$ from admitting a regular basis. In this paper, we prove that for any integer $n \geq 2$, there are infinitely many totally real bi-quadratic fields $K$ with $|Po(K)| = 2^{n}$. In fact, we explicitly construct such an infinite family of number fields. This extends an infinite family of bi-q…
For $n=3$, 4, and 5, we prove that, when $S_n$-number fields of degree $n$ are ordered by their absolute discriminants, the lattice shapes of the rings of integers in these fields become equidistributed in the space of lattices.
Let $F(x,y)$ be an irreducible binary form of degree $\geq 3$ with integer coefficients and with real roots. Let $M$ be an imaginary quadratic field, with ring of integers $Z_M$. Let $K>0$. We describe an efficient method how to reduce the resolution of the relative Thue inequalities \[ |F(x,y)|\leq K \;\; (x,y\in Z_M) \] to the resolution of absolute Thue inequalities of type \[ |F(x,y)|\leq k \;\; (x,y\in Z). \] We illustrate our method with an explicit example.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $\Q$, and let $G$ be the torsion group $E(K)_{tors}$ for some cubic field $K$ which does not occur over $\Q$. In this paper, we determine over which types of cubic number fields (cyclic cubic, non-Galois totally real cubic, complex cubic or pure cubic) $G$ can occur, and if so, whether it can occur infinitely often or not. Moreover, if it occurs, we provide elliptic curves $E/\Q$ together with cubic fields $K$ so that $G= E(K)_{tors}$.
We classify all post-critically finite unicritical polynomials defined over the maximal totally real algebraic extension of ${\mathbb Q}$. Two auxiliary results used in the proof of this result may be of some independent interest. The first is a recursion formula for the $n$-diameter of an interval, which uses properties of Jacobi polynomials. The second is a numerical criterion which allows one to the give a bound on the degree of any algebraic integer having all of its complex embeddings in a real interval of length less than $4$.
We construct $p$-adic measures which interpolate the special values of reciprocals of $p$-adic $L$-functions of totally real number fields $K$ at negative integers. These measures are defined by analyzing the non-constant term of partial Eisenstein series of the Hilbert modular group of $K$.
We consider the problem of characterizing all number fields $K$ such that all algebraic integers $α\in K$ can be written as the sum of distinct units of $K$. We extend a method due to Thuswaldner and Ziegler that previously did not work for totally complex fields and apply our results to the case of totally complex quartic number fields.
We propose and justify a generalised approach to prove the polynomial reduction of the RLWE to the PLWE problem attached to the ring of integers of a monogenic number field. We prove such equivalence in the case of the maximal totally real subextension of the 4p-th cyclotomic field, with p arbitrary prime.
It has been conjectured for some time that, for any integer n\ge 2, any real number ε>0 and any transcendental real number ξ, there would exist infinitely many algebraic integers αof degree at most n with the property that |ξ-α| < H(α)^{-n+ε}, where H(α) denotes the height of α. Although this is true for n=2, we show here that, for n=3, the optimal exponent of approximation is not 3 but (3+\sqrt{5})/2 = 2.618...
In a recent paper, Freitas and Siksek proved an asypmtotic version of Fermat's Last Theorem for many totally real fields. We prove an extension of their result to generalized Fermat equations of the form $A x^p+B y^p+ C z^p=0$, where $A$, $B$, $C$ are odd integers belonging to a totally real field.
In an earlier paper [4], we derived asymptotic formulas for the number of representations of zero and of large positive integers by the cubic forms in seven variables which can be written as $L_1(x_1,x_2,x_3) Q_1(x_1,x_2,x_3)+ L_2(x_4,x_5,x_6) Q_2(x_4,x_5,x_6) + a_7 x_7^3$ where $L_1$ and $L_2$ are linear forms, $Q_1$ and $Q_2$ are quadratic forms and $a_7$ is a non-zero integer and for which certain quantities related to $L_1Q_1$ and $L_2Q_2$ were non-zero. In this paper, we consider the case when one or both of these quantities is zero but $L_1Q_1$ and $L_2Q_2$ are still nondegenerate cubic …
In addition to rather complicated general methods it is interesting and valuable to develop fast efficient methods for calculating generators of power integral bases in special types of number fields. We consider sextic fields containing a real cubic and a complex quadratic fields. We develop a very simple and very efficient method to calculate generators of power integral bases in this type of fields. Our method can be applied to infinite families of number fields, as well. We substantially improve the former methods. Our algorithm is illustrated with detailed examples, involving infinite par…
In 1969, H. Davenport and W. M. Schmidt studied the problem of approximation to a real number ξby algebraic integers of degree at most three. They did so, using geometry of numbers, by resorting to the dual problem of finding simultaneous approximations to ξand ξ^2 by rational numbers with the same denominator. In this paper, we show that their measure of approximation for the dual problem is optimal and that it is realized for a countable set of real numbers ξ. We give several properties of these numbers including measures of approximation by rational numbers, by quadratic real numbers and by…
Using the theory of metaplectic forms,we study the asymptotic behavior of cubic exponential sums over the ring of Eisenstein integers. In the first part of the paper, some non-trivial estimates on average over arithmetic progressions are obtained. In the second part of the paper, we prove that the sign of cubic exponential sums changes infinitely often, as the modulus runs over almost prime integers.
Reduced ideals have been defined in the context of integer rings in quadratic number fields, and they are closely tied to the continued fraction algorithm. The notion of this type of ideal extends naturally to number fields of higher degree. In the case of pure cubic fields, generated by cube roots of integers, a convenient integral basis provides a means for identifying reduced ideals in these fields. We define integer sequences whose terms are in correspondence with some of these ideals, suggesting a generalization of continued fractions.
In 1998 Friedlander and Iwaniec proved that there are infinitely many primes of the form $a^2+b^4$. To show this they defined the spin of Gaussian integers by the Jacobi symbol, and one of the key ingredients in the proof was to show that the spin becomes equidistributed along Gaussian primes. To generalize this we define the cubic spin of ideals of $\mathbb{Z}[ζ_{12}]=\mathbb{Z}[ζ_3,i]$ by using the cubic residue character on the Eisenstein integers $\mathbb{Z}[ζ_3]$. Our main theorem says that the cubic spin is equidistributed along prime ideals of $\mathbb{Z}[ζ_{12}]$. The proof of this fol…
A set of $m$ positive integers $\{x_{1},\ldots,x_{m}\}$ is called a $P^{3}_{1}$-set of size $m$ if the product of any three elements in the set increased by one is a cube integer. A $P^{3}_{1}$-set $S$ is said to be extendible if there exists an integer $y\not\in S$ such that $S\cup\{y\}$ still a $P^{3}_{1}$-set. Now, let consider the Diophantine equation $u(u+1)/2=v^{3}$ whose integer solutions produce what we called cubic-triangular numbers. The purpose of this paper is to prove simultaneously that the $P^{3}_{1}$-set $\{1,2,13\}$ is non-extendible and $n=1$ is the unique cubic-triangular nu…
In this paper we determine the group of rational automorphisms of binary cubic and quartic forms with integer coefficients and non-zero discriminant in terms of certain quadratic covariants of cubic and quartic forms. This allows one to give precise asymptotic formulae for the number of integers in an interval representable by a binary cubic or quartic form and extends work of Hooley. Further, we give the field of definition of lines contained in certain cubic and quartic surfaces related to binary cubic and quartic forms.
In the paper we study the distribution of the discriminant $D(P)$ of polynomials $P$ from the class $\mathcal{P}_{n}(Q)$ of all integer polynomials of degree $n$ and height at most $Q$. We evaluate the asymptotic number of polynomials $P\in \mathcal{P}_{n}(Q)$ having all the roots real and satisfying the inequality $|D(P)|\le X$ as $Q\to\infty$ and $X/Q^{2n-2}\to 0$.
