A research complex for aerospace radiation effects research has been proposed in Harbin Institute of Technology. Its core part is a proton accelerator complex, which consists of a 10 MeV injector, a 300 MeV synchrotron and beam transport lines. The proton beam extracted from the synchrotron is utilized for the radiation effects research. Based on the conceptual design [1], the design study for optimizing the synchrotron has been done. A new lattice design was worked out, and the multi-turn injection and slow extraction system were optimized with the new lattice design. In order to improve the time structure of the extracted beam, a RF knock-out method is employed. To meet the requirement of accurate control of dose, the frequency of the RF kicker is well investigated.
Using the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) linac as the injector, a 500 MeV proton synchrotron is proposed for multidisciplinary application, such as biology, material and proton therapy. The synchrotron will deliver proton beam with energy from 80 MeV to 500 MeV. A compact lattice design was worked out, and all the important beam dynamics issues were investigated. The 80 MeV H- beam is stripped and injected into the synchrotron by using multi-turn injection. In order to continuously extraction the proton with small beam loss, the achromatic structure is proposed and slow extraction meth…
A longitudinal beam properties, data acquisition system has been commissioned to operate in the Fermilab booster ring. This system captures real time information including beam synchronous phase, bunch length, and coupled bunch instability amplitudes as the beam is accelerated from 400 MeV to 8 GeV in 33 ms. The system uses an off-the-shelf Tektronix oscilloscope running Labview software and a synchronous pulse generator. This paper describes the hardware configuration and the software configuration used to optimize the data processing rate.
The present state of progress in laser wakefield acceleration encourages considering it as a practical alternative to conventional particle accelerators. A promising application would be to use a laser-plasma accelerator as an injector for a synchrotron light source. Yet, the energy spread and jitter of the laser-plasma beam pose a significant difficulty for an efficient injection. In this paper we propose a design of a prototype injector to deliver 500 MeV low-intensity electron bunches to the DESY-II electron synchrotron. The design utilizes presently available conventional accelerator techn…
Scorpius is a new multi-pulse linear induction accelerator (LIA). It is presently planned for Scorpius to accelerate four 2-kA electron pulses to 20 MeV from an injected energy of 2 MeV. The goal of Scorpius is to deliver a multi-pulse electron beam with quality sufficient for use in flash radiography of large-scale explosively-driven experiments. Beam physics has a profound effect on the quality of multi-pulse radiographs. Beam halo or asymmetry causes emittance growth, which enlarges spot size, thereby degrading resolution. Beam centroid motion due to instabilities is especially problematic.…
This article presents the conceptual design of a new compact superconducting gantry and synchrotron for Carbon ion therapy and focuses on the solutions (layout and optics) to make it compact. The main specificity of this gantry design is to be smaller and lighter with respect to the existing carbon-ion gantries. This is achieved by adopting an innovative mechanical design and by using superconducting magnets of the Canted Cosine Theta type with a small aperture. The optics is optimized to reduce the beam size, it is achromatic and it is independent of the rotation angle (for an incoming round …
The Turkic Accelerator Complex (TAC) project has been developed with the support of the Turkish State Planning Organization by the collaboration of 10 Turkish universities. The complex is planned to have four main facilities, namely: SASE FEL Facility Based on 1 GeV Electron Linac, Third Generation Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SR) Based on 3.56 GeV Positron Synchrotron, Super-Charm Factory ($\sqrt{s} = 3.77$ GeV) by colliding the electron beam coming from the linac with an energy of 1 GeV and positron beam coming through the positron ring with an energy of 3.56 GeV, GeV scale proton acceler…
AREAL (Advanced Research Electron Accelerator Laboratory) is an electron linear accelerator with a laser driven RF gun constructed at CANDLE Synchrotron Research Institute. After the successful operation of the gun section at 5 MeV, a program of facility energy growth up to 50 MeV has been launched, which includes the construction of two advanced experimental stations for the generation of middle infrared and THz radiation. This paper presents the design of these stations and gives the characteristics of expected radiation based on numerical and theoretical studies.
The Advanced Superconducting Test Accelerator (ASTA) facility is currently under construction at Fermilab. With a 1-ms macropulse composed of up to 3000 micropulses and with beam energies projected from 45 to 800 MeV, the need for non-intercepting diagnostics for beam size, position, energy, and bunch length is clear. In addition to the rf BPMs, optical synchrotron radiation (OSR), and optical diffraction radiation (ODR) techniques already planned, we propose the use of undulator radiation from a dedicated device for diagnostics. with a nominal period of 4-5 cm, a tunable field parameter K, an…
For the purpose of treatment of various cancer and medical research, the synchrotron based medical machine under the Korea Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator (KHIMA) project have been conducted and is going to treat the patient at the beginning of 2018. The KHIMA synchrotron is designed to accelerate and extract the carbon ion (proton) beam with various energy range, 110 up to 430 MeV/u (60 up to 230 MeV). A lattice design and beam optics studies for the High Energy Beam Transport (HEBT) line at the KHIMA accelerator system have been carried out with WinAgile and the MAD-X codes. Because the magnet…
We present the results of theoretical and numerical studies on the source of slow positrons for NSC KIPT. The positrons are intended to generate with the electrons of 9, 40 or 90 MeV available at the KIPT electron linacs. The yield of positrons from the conversion target is estimated as well as their spatial--angular characteristics. Optimal parameters of the conversion target for each energy of electrons are estimated. Preliminary design of the positron beam formation system is also presented. Qualitative analytical dependencies of the positron beam parameters at the system exit upon the ampl…
The Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) is a large international scientific project initiated and hosted by China. It is located in a 100-km circumference underground tunnel. The accelerator complex consists of a linear accelerator (Linac), a damping ring (DR), the Booster, the Collider and several transport lines. In the tunnel, space is reserved for a future pp collider, SPPC. The CEPC center-of-mass energy is 240 GeV, and at that collision energy will serve as a Higgs factory. The design also allows operation at 91 GeV for a Z factory and at 160 GeV for a W factory. The heart of the …
A number of theoretical calculations have studied the effect of radiation reaction forces on radiation distributions in strong field counter-propagating electron beam-laser interactions, but could these effects - including quantum corrections - be observed in interactions with realistic bunches and focusing fields, as is hoped in a number of soon to be proposed experiments? We present numerical calculations of the angularly resolved radiation spectrum from an electron bunch with parameters similar to those produced in laser wakefield acceleration experiments, interacting with an intense, ultra…
