We introduce bud generating systems, which are used for combinatorial generation. They specify sets of various kinds of combinatorial objects, called languages. They can emulate context-free grammars, regular tree grammars, and synchronous grammars, allowing us to work with all these generating systems in a unified way. The theory of bud generating systems uses colored operads. Indeed, an object is generated by a bud generating system if it satisfies a certain equation in a colored operad. To compute the generating series of the languages of bud generating systems, we introduce formal power series on colored operads and several operations on these. Series on colored operads are crucial to express the languages specified by bud generating systems and allow us to enumerate combinatorial objects with respect to some statistics. Some examples of bud generating systems are constructed; in particular to specify some sorts of balanced trees and to obtain recursive formulas enumerating these.
In the recent work arXiv:2112.10289 we introduced a geometric decomposition of meanders. In the present paper, we generalize this approach to the case of singular meanders and give a more algebraic description of this decomposition.
We introduce a functorial construction which, from a monoid, produces a set-operad. We obtain new (symmetric or not) operads as suboperads or quotients of the operad obtained from the additive monoid. These involve various familiar combinatorial objects: parking functions, packed words, planar rooted trees, generalized Dyck paths, Schröder trees, Motzkin paths, integer compositions, directed animals, etc. We also retrieve some known operads: the magmatic operad, the commutative associative operad, and the diassociative operad.
We introduce an explicit combinatorial characterization of the minimal model ${\cal O}_{\infty}$ of the coloured operad ${\cal O}$ encoding non-symmetric operads. In our description of ${\cal O}_{\infty}$, the spaces of operations are defined in terms of hypergraph polytopes and the composition structure generalizes the one of the $A_{\infty}$-operad. As further generalizations of this construction, we present a combinatorial description of the $W$-construction applied on ${\cal O}$, as well as of the minimal model of the coloured operad ${\cal C}$ encoding non-symmetric cyclic operads.
We introduce a functorial construction which, from a monoid, produces a set-operad. We obtain new (symmetric or not) operads as suboperads or quotients of the operads obtained from usual monoids such as the additive and multiplicative monoids of integers and cyclic monoids. They involve various familiar combinatorial objects: endofunctions, parking functions, packed words, permutations, planar rooted trees, trees with a fixed arity, Schröder trees, Motzkin words, integer compositions, directed animals, and segmented integer compositions. We also recover some already known (symmetric or not) op…
For a directed polytope, we construct a colored operad whose Poincare-Hilbert series encodes certain operations on the cellular complex of the polytope. We conjecture that for a class of short polytopes the constructed operads are Koszul and self-dual. We verify the conjecture for simplices, polygons, and products thereof.
We generalize the construction of multitildes in the aim to provide multitilde operators for regular languages. We show that the underliying algebraic structure involves the action of some operads. An operad is an algebraic structure that mimics the composition of the functions. The involved operads are described in terms of combinatorial objects. These operads are obtained from more primitive objects, namely precompositions, whose algebraic counter-parts are investigated. One of these operads acts faithfully on languages in the sense that two different operators act in two different ways.
We study a functorial construction from the category of monoids to the category of set-operads and we give some combinatorial examples of applications.
The main ideas developed in this habilitation thesis consist in endowing combinatorial objects (words, permutations, trees, Young tableaux, etc.) with operations in order to construct algebraic structures. This process allows, by studying algebraically the structures thus obtained (changes of bases, generating sets, presentations, morphisms, representations), to collect combinatorial information about the underlying objects. The algebraic structures the most encountered here are magmas, posets, associative algebras, dendriform algebras, Hopf bialgebras, operads, and pros. This work explores th…
The pre-Lie operad can be realized as a space T of labelled rooted trees. A result of F. Chapoton shows that the pre-Lie operad is a free twisted Lie algebra. That is, the S-module T is obtained as the plethysm of the S-module Lie with an S-module F. In the context of species, we construct an explicit basis of F. This allows us to give a new proof of Chapoton's results. Moreover it permits us to show that F forms a sub nonsymmetric operad of the pre-Lie operad T.
A combinatorial study discloses two surjective morphisms between generalized shuffle algebras and algebras generated by the colored Hurwitz polyzêtas. The combinatorial aspects of the products and co-products involved in these algebras will be examined.
We introduce a functor ${\sf As}$ from the category of posets to the category of nonsymmetric binary and quadratic operads, establishing a new connection between these two categories. Each operad obtained by the construction ${\sf As}$ provides a generalization of the associative operad because all of its generating operations are associative. This construction has a very singular property: the operads obtained from ${\sf As}$ are almost never basic. Besides, the properties of the obtained operads, such as Koszulity, basicity, associative elements, realization, and dimensions, depend on combin…
In this paper, we give a general framework for the Boltzmann generation of colored objects belonging to combinatorial constructible classes. We propose an intuitive notion called profiled objects which allows the sampling of size-colored objects (and also of k-colored objects) although the corresponding class cannot be described by an analytic ordinary generating function.
A modular or distributive lattice is `diamond-colored' if its order diagram edges are colored in such a way that, within any diamond of edges, parallel edges have the same color. Such lattices arise naturally in combinatorial representation theory, particularly in the study of poset models for semisimple Lie algebra representations and their companion Weyl group symmetric functions. One of our goals is to gather in one place some elementary but foundational results concerning these lattice structures; this includes some new results as well as some new interpretations of classical results. We t…
Worpitzky's identity expresses $n^p$ in terms of the Eulerian numbers and binomial coefficients: $$n^p = \sum_{i=0}^{p-1} \genfrac<>{0pt}{}{p}{i} \binom{n+i}{p}.$$ Pita-Ruiz recently defined numbers $A_{a,b,r}(p,i)$ implicitly to satisfy a generalized Worpitzky identity $$\binom{an+b}{r}^p = \sum_{i=0}^{rp} A_{a,b,r}(p,i) \binom{n+rp-i}{rp},$$ and asked whether there is a combinatorial interpretation of the numbers $A_{a,b,r}(p,i)$. We provide such a combinatorial interpretation by defining a notion of descents in colored multipermutations, and then proving that $A_{a,b,r}(p,i)$ is equal to th…
We use Giraudo's construction of combinatorial operads from monoids to offer a conceptual explanation of the origins of Hoffbeck's path sequences of shuffle trees, and use it to define new monomial orders of shuffle trees. One such order is utilised to exhibit a quadratic Gröbner basis of the Poisson operad.
We construct a combinatorial model of an A-infinity-operad which acts simplicially on the cobar resolution (not just its total space) of a simplicial set with respect to a ring R.
Pairs of graded graphs, together with the Fomin property of graded graph duality, are rich combinatorial structures providing among other a framework for enumeration. The prototypical example is the one of the Young graded graph of integer partitions, allowing us to connect number of standard Young tableaux and numbers of permutations. Here, we use operads, that algebraic devices abstracting the notion of composition of combinatorial objects, to build pairs of graded graphs. For this, we first construct a pair of graded graphs where vertices are syntax trees, the elements of free nonsymmetric …
Using the combinatorial species setting, we propose two new operad structures on multigraphs and on pointed oriented multigraphs. The former can be considered as a canonical operad on multigraphs, directly generalizing the Kontsevich-Willwacher operad, and has many interesting suboperads. The latter is a natural extension of the pre-Lie operad in a sense developed here and related to the multigraph operad. We study some of the finitely generated suboperads of the multigraph operad and establish links between them and the commutative operad and the commutative magmatic operad.
In this paper, we study averaging operators from an algebraic and combinatorial point of view. We first construct free averaging algebras in terms of a class of bracketed words called averaging words. We next apply this construction to obtain one and two variable generating functions for subsets of averaging words when the averaging operator is taken to be idempotent. When the averaging algebra has an idempotent generator, the generating function in one variable is twice the generating function for large Schröder numbers, leading us to give interpretations of large Schröder numbers in terms of…
We study compositions whose parts are colored by subsequences of the Fibonacci numbers. We give explicit bijections between Fibonacci colored compositions and several combinatorial objects, including certain restricted ternary and quaternary words, spanning trees in the ladder graph, unimodal sequences covering an initial interval, and ordered-consecutive partition sequences. Our approach relies on the basic idea of representing the colored compositions as tilings of an $n$-board whose tiles are connected, and sometimes decorated, according to a suitable combinatorial interpretation of the giv…
We find a combinatorial setting for the coefficients of the Boros-Moll polynomials $P_m(a)$ in terms of partially 2-colored permutations. Using this model, we give a combinatorial proof of a recurrence relation on the coefficients of $P_m(a)$. This approach enables us to give a combinatorial interpretation of the log-concavity of $P_m(a)$ which was conjectured by Moll and confirmed by Kauers and Paule.
Multitildes are regular operators that were introduced by Caron et al. in order to increase the number of Glushkov automata. In this paper, we study the family of the multitilde operators from an algebraic point of view using the notion of operad. This leads to a combinatorial description of already known results as well as new results on compositions, actions and enumerations.
We rewrite the (extended) Ooguri-Vafa partition function for colored HOMFLY-PT polynomials for torus knots in terms of the free-fermion (semi-infinite wedge) formalism, making it very similar to the generating function for double Hurwitz numbers. This allows us to conjecture the combinatorial meaning of full expansion of the correlation differentials obtained via the topological recursion on the Brini-Eynard-Mariño spectral curve for the colored HOMFLY-PT polynomials of torus knots. This correspondence suggests a structural combinatorial result for the extended Ooguri-Vafa partition function. …
In this paper, we extend the notion of labeled partitions with ordinary permutations to colored permutations in the sense that the colors are endowed with a cyclic structure. We use labeled partitions with colored permutations to derive the generating function of the $\mathrm{fmaj}_k$ indices of colored permutations. The second result is a combinatorial treatment of a relation on the q-derangement numbers with respect to colored permutations which leads to the formula of Chow for signed permutations and the formula of Faliharimalala and Zeng [10] on colored permutations. The third result is an…

We consider the graphs involved in the theoretical physics model known as the colored Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. We study in detail their combinatorial properties at any order in the so-called $1/N$ expansion, and we enumerate these graphs asymptotically. Because of the duality between colored graphs involving $q+1$ colors and colored triangulations in dimension $q$, our results apply to the asymptotic enumeration of spaces that generalize unicellular maps - in the sense that they are obtained from a single building block - for which a higher-dimensional generalization of the genus is kept…
We construct an integrable colored five-vertex model whose partition function is a Lascoux atom based on the five-vertex model of Motegi and Sakai [arXiv:1305.3030] and the colored five-vertex model of Brubaker, the first author, Bump, and Gustafsson [arXiv:1902.01795]. We then modify this model in two different ways to construct a Lascoux polynomial, yielding the first known combinatorial interpretation of a Lascoux polynomial and atom. Using this, we prove a conjectured combinatorial interpretation in terms of set-valued tableaux of a Lascoux polynomial and atom due to Pechenik and the secon…
We study the complex reflection groups G(r,p,n). By considering these groups as subgroups of the wreath products Z_r wr S_n, and by using Clifford theory, we define combinatorial parameters and descent representations of G(r,p,n), previously known for classical Weyl groups. One of these parameters is the flag major index, which also has an important role in the decomposition of these representations into irreducibles. A Carlitz type identity relating the combinatorial parameters with the degrees of the group, is presented.
In our previous paper, we determined a unified combinatorial framework to look at a large number of colored partition identities, and studied the five identities corresponding to the exceptional modular equations of prime degree of the Schroeter, Russell and Ramanujan type. The goal of this paper is to use the master bijection of our previous work to show combinatorially several new and highly nontrivial colored partition identities. We conclude by listing a number of further interesting identities of the same type as conjectures.
We revisit the geometric description of cluster categories in type E in terms of colored diagonals in a polygon and generalize it to the case of m-cluster categories. As an application, we relate colored diagonals in a polygon to semi-standard Young tableaux, in type E_6,E_7,E_8. This provides a new compatibility description of semi--standard Young tableaux in Grassmannian cluster algebras in type E_6, E_8 and in a sub-cluster algebra of type E_7.
We give a combinatorial evaluation of Iwahori Whittaker functions for unramified genuine principal series representations on metaplectic covers of the general linear group over a non-archimedean local field. To describe the combinatorics, we introduce new combinatorial data that we call colored data: colored Lusztig data, colored Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, and colored lattice models. We show that all three are equivalent. To achieve the result, we give an explicit Iwahori decomposition for the maximal unipotent subgroup of a split reductive group which gives the parametrization of the generaliz…
Compact quantum groups can be studied by investigating their co-representation categories in analogy to the Schur-Weyl/Tannaka-Krein approach. For the special class of (unitary) "easy" quantum groups these categories arise from a combinatorial structure: Rows of two-colored points form the objects, partitions of two such rows the morphisms; vertical/horizontal concatenation and reflection give composition, monoidal product and involution. Of the four possible classes $\mathcal{O}$, $\mathcal{B}$, $\mathcal{S}$ and $\mathcal{H}$ of such categories (inspired respectively by the classical orthogo…
In this note we give a new proof of a closed formula for the multivariable generating series of diagonally colored Young diagrams. This series also describes the Euler characteristics of certain Nakajima quiver varieties. Our proof is a direct combinatorial argument, based on Andrews' work on generalized Frobenius partitions. We also obtain representations of these series in some particular cases as infinite products.
Within the framework of unitary easy quantum groups, we study an analogue of Brauer's Schur-Weyl approach to the representation theory of the orthogonal group. We consider concrete combinatorial categories whose morphisms are formed by partitions of finite sets into disjoint subsets of cardinality two; the points of these sets are colored black or white. These categories correspond to "half-liberated easy" interpolations between the unitary group and Wang's quantum counterpart. We complete the classification of all such categories demonstrating that the subcategories of a certain natural halfw…
We review the combinatorial, topological, algebraic and metric properties supported by $(D+1)$-colored graphs, with a focus on those that are pertinent to the study of tensor model theories. We show how to extract a limiting continuum metric space from this set of graphs and detail properties of this limit through the calculation of exponents at criticality.
A syntax tree is a planar rooted tree where internal nodes are labeled on a graded set of generators. There is a natural notion of occurrence of contiguous pattern in such trees. We describe a way, given a set of generators $\mathfrak{G}$ and a set of patterns $\mathcal{P}$, to enumerate the trees constructed on $\mathfrak{G}$ and avoiding $\mathcal{P}$. The method is built around inclusion-exclusion formulas forming a system of equations on formal power series of trees, and composition operations of trees. This does not require particular conditions on the set of patterns to avoid. We connect…
We provide a general and unified combinatorial framework for a number of colored partition identities, which include the five, recently proved analytically by B. Berndt, that correspond to the exceptional modular equations of prime degree due to H. Schroeter, R. Russell and S. Ramanujan. Our approach generalizes that of S. Kim, who has given a bijective proof for two of these five identities, namely the ones modulo 7 (also known as the Farkas-Kra identity) and modulo 3. As a consequence of our method, we determine bijective proofs also for the two highly nontrivial identities modulo 5 and 11, …
We present applications of rectangular matrix models to various combinatorial problems, among which the enumeration of face-bicolored graphs with prescribed vertex degrees, and vertex-tricolored triangulations. We also mention possible applications to Interaction-Round-a-Face and hard-particle statistical models defined on random lattices.
In any dimension $D$, the Euclidean Einstein-Hilbert action, which describes gravity in the absence of matter, can be discretized over random discrete spaces obtained by gluing families of polytopes together in all possible ways. In the physical limit of small Newton constant, only the spaces which maximize the mean curvature survive. In two dimensions, this results in a theory of random discrete spheres, which converge in the continuum limit towards the Brownian sphere, a random fractal space interpreted as a quantum random space-time. In this limit, the continuous Liouville theory of $D=2$ q…
