The quantum dynamics of carriers bound to helical tube surfaces is investigated in a thin-layer quantization scheme. By numerically solving the open-boundary Schr$\ddot{\rm o}$dinger equation in curvilinear coordinates, geometric effect on the coherent transmission spectra is analysed in the case of single propagating mode as well as multimode. It is shown that, the coiling endows the helical nanotube with different transport properties from a bent cylindrical surface. Fano resonance appears as a purely geometric effect in the conductance, the corresponding energy of quasibound state is obviously influenced by the torsion and length of the nanotube. We also find new plateaus in the conductance. The transport of double-degenerate mode in this geometry is reminiscent of the Zeeman coupling between the magnetic field and spin angular momentum in quasi-one-dimensional structure.
The measured electric resistance of carbon nanotubes wrapped with DNA molecules depends strongly on the spin of the injected electrons. Motivated by these experiments, we study the effect of helix-shaped potentials on the electronic spectrum of carbon nanotubes. We find that in combination with the curvature-induced spin-orbit coupling inherent to nanotubes, such a perturbation opens helicity-dependent gaps. Within these partial gaps, left-moving electrons carry a fixed spin-projection that is reversed for right-moving electrons, and the probability of electrons to transfer through the nanotub…
We formulate and implement Helical DFT -- a self-consistent first principles simulation method for nanostructures with helical symmetries. Such materials are well represented in all of nanotechnology, chemistry and biology, and are expected to be associated with unprecedented material properties. We rigorously demonstrate the existence and completeness of special solutions to the single electron problem for helical nanostructures, called helical Bloch waves. We describe how the Kohn-Sham Density Functional Theory equations for a helical nanostructure can be reduced to a fundamental domain with…

A one-dimensional continuous model for carbon nanotubes
将Tu和Ou-Yang在[Phys. Rev. Rev.Lett. \textbf{76},4055(1997)]。
Electronic structure of single-wall silicon nanotubes and silicon nanorribons: Helical symmetry treatment and effect of dimensionality
Helical method of tube formation for band structure calculations and Hartree-Fock self-consistent field method (HF-SCF) modified for periodic solids have been applied in study of electronic properties of single-wall silicon nanotubes (SWSiNT), graphene-like parent 2D-hP silicone sheet and nanoribbons (SiNR). The results obtained for nanotubes of the length of ${\approx}$ 358 Åin diameter range ${\approx}$ 3.7 Å-- 116 Åof different helicity-types have shown that only small-diameter SWSiNTs up to} $φ$ {6.3 Å~ are metallic due to the effect of curvature which induces coupling of}{ $σ$ }{and}{ $π$…
We report experimental studies of spin-wave excitations in individual 22 nm thick Ni80Fe20 nanotubes with diameters of about 150 nm by means of Brillouin light-scattering (BLS) spectroscopy. Irradiated by microwaves we resolve sets of discrete resonances in the center of nanotubes ranging from 2.5 to 12.5 GHz. Comparing to a recent theoretical work and micromagnetic simulations, we identify different characteristic eigenmodes depending on the axial, mixed or vortex configuration. The mixed and vortex states give rise to modes with helical phase profiles substantiating an unusual nature of mode…
Spins confined in quantum dots are considered as a promising platform for quantum information processing. While many advanced quantum operations have been demonstrated, experimental as well as theoretical efforts are now focusing on the development of scalable spin quantum bit architectures. One particularly promising method relies on the coupling of spin quantum bits to microwave cavity photons. This would enable the coupling of distant spins via the exchange of virtual photons for two qubit gate applications, which still remains to be demonstrated with spin qubits. Here, we use a circuit QED…
Magnetic skyrmions are believed to be the promising candidate of information carriers in spintronics. However, the skyrmion Hall effect due to the nontrivial topology of skyrmions can induce a skyrmion accumulation or even annihilation at the edge of the devices, which hinders the real-world applications of skyrmions. In this work, we theoretically investigate the current-driven skyrmion motion on magnetic nanotubes which can be regarded as "edgeless" in the tangential direction. By performing micromagnetic simulations, we find that the skyrmion motion exhibits a helical trajectory on the nano…
In a recent experiment [A. Donarini et al., Nat Comms 10, 381 (2019)], electronic transport through a carbon nanotube quantum dot was observed to be suppressed by the formation of a quantum-coherent ``dark state''. In this paper we consider theoretically the counting statistics and waiting-time distribution of this dark-state-limited transport. We show that the statistics are characterised by giant super-Poissonian Fano factors and long-tailed waiting-time distributions, both of which are signatures of the bistability and extreme electron bunching caused by the dark state.
Illumination of atoms by resonant lasers can pump electrons into a coherent superposition of hyperfine levels which can no longer absorb the light. Such superposition is known as dark state, because fluorescent light emission is then suppressed. Here we report an all-electric analogue of this destructive interference effect in a carbon nanotube quantum dot. The dark states are a coherent superposition of valley (angular momentum) states which are decoupled from either the drain or the source leads. Their emergence is visible in asymmetric current-voltage characteristics, with missing current s…
We study coherent spin transport through helical edge states of topological insulator tunnel-coupled to metallic leads. We demonstrate that unpolarized incoming electron beam acquires finite polarization after transmission through such a setup provided that edges contain at least one magnetic impurity. The finite polarization appears even in the fully classical regime and is therefore robust to dephasing. There is also a quantum magnetic field-tunable contribution to the polarization, which shows sharp identical Aharonov-Bohm resonances as a function of magnetic flux - with the period $hc/2e$ …
Nanotubular molecular self-aggregates are characterized by a high degree of symmetry and they are fundamental systems for light-harvesting and energy transport. While coherent effects are thought to be at the basis of their high efficiency, the relationship between structure, coherence and functionality is still an open problem. We analyze natural nanotubes present in Green Sulfur Bacteria. We show that they have the ability to support macroscopic coherent states, i.e. delocalized excitonic states coherently spread over many molecules, even at room temperature. Specifically, assuming a canonic…
Tellurium can form nanowires of helical atomic chains. Given their unique one-dimensional van der Waals structure, these nanowires are expected to show remarkably different physical and electronic properties than bulk tellurium. Here we show that few-chain and single-chain van der Waals tellurium nanowires can be isolated using carbon nanotube and boron nitride nanotube encapsulation. With the approach, the number of atomic chains can be controlled by the inner diameter of the nanotube. The Raman response of the structures suggests that the interaction between a single-atomic tellurium chain a…
