We study the low-energy electronic properties of a junction made of two crossed metallic carbon nanotubes of general chiralities. We derive a tight binding tunneling matrix element that couples low-energy states on the two tubes, which allows us to calculate the contact conductance of the junction. We find that the intrinsic asymmetries of the junction cause the forward and backward hopping probabilities from one tube to another to be different. This defines a zero-field Hall conductance for the junction, which we find to scale inversely with the junction contact conductance. Through a systematic study of the dependence of the junction conductance on different junction parameters, we find that the crossing angle is the dominant factor which determines the magnitude of the conductance.
We probe the high frequency emission of a carbon nanotube based Josephson junction and compare it to its DC Josephson current. The AC emission is probed by coupling the carbon nanotube to an on-chip detector (a Superconductor-Insulator-Superconductor junction), via a coplanar waveguide resonator. The measurement of the photo-assisted current of the detector gives direct access to the signal emitted by the carbon nanotube. We focus on the gate regions that exhibit Kondo features in the normal state and demonstrate that when the DC supercurrent is enhanced by the Kondo effect, the AC Josephson e…

We investigate the molecular sensing properties of carbon nanotube-boron nitride-carbon nanotube (CNT-BN-CNT) junctions. We demonstrate that the electrical conductance of such a junction changes in response to the binding of an analyte molecule to the region of BN. The change in conductance depends on the length of the BN spacer and the position of the analyte and therefore we propose a method of statistically analysing conductance data. We demonstrate the ability to discriminate between analytes, by computing the conductance changes due to three analytes (benzene, thiol-capped oligoyne and a …

We have investigated the microwave response of nanotube Josephson junctions at 600-900 MHz at microwave powers corresponding to currents from 0 to $2\times I_{\mathrm C}$ in the junction. Compared with theoretical modeling, the response of the junctions correspond well to the lumped element model of resistively and capacitively shunted junction. We demonstrate the operation of these superconducting FETs as charge detectors at high frequencies without any matching circuits. Gate-voltage-induced charge $Q_{\rm G}$ modifies the critical current $I_{\rm C}$, which changes the effective impedance o…
In a quantum dot hybrid superconducting junction, the behavior of the supercurrent is dominated by Coulomb blockade physics, which determines the magnetic state of the dot. In particular, in a single level quantum dot singly occupied, the sign of the supercurrent can be reversed, giving rise to a pi-junction. This 0-pi transition, corresponding to a singlet-doublet transition, is then driven by the gate voltage or by the superconducting phase in the case of strong competition between the superconducting proximity effect and Kondo correlations. In a two-level quantum dot, such as a clean carbon…
Armchair nanotubes of MoS2 and WS2 offer a sizeable band gap, with the advantage of a one dimensional (1D) electronic material, but free from edge roughness and thermodynamic instability of nanoribbons. Use of such semiconducting MX2 (MoS2, WS2) armchair nanotubes (NTs) in conjunction with metallic carbon nanotubes (CNT) could prove useful for nanoelectronics and photonics applications. In this work atomistic simulations of MoS2 NT-CNT and WS2 NT-CNT junctions are carried out to study the physics of such junctions. With density functional theory (DFT) we study the carrier density distribution,…
Carbon nanotube Y-junctions are of great interest to the next generation of innovative multi-terminal nanodevices. Topological indices are graph-theoretically based parameters that describe various structural properties of a chemical molecule. The entropy of a graph is a topological descriptor that serves to characterize the complexity of the underlying molecular graph. The concept of entropy is a physical property of a thermodynamic system. Graph entropies are the essential thermophysical quantities defined for various graph invariants and are applied to measure the heterogeneity and relative…
The difficulty of describing excitons in semiconducting SWNTs analytically lies with the fact that excitons can neither be considered strictly 1D nor 2D objects. However, the situation changes in the case of metallic nanotubes where, by virtue of screening from gapless metallic subbands, the radius of the exciton becomes much larger than the radius of the nanotube $R_\text{ex}\gg R$. Taking advantage of this, we develop the theory of excitons in metallic nanotubes, determining that their binding energy is about $0.08v/R$, in agreement with the existing experimental data. Additionally, because …
Degeneracy of discrete energy levels of finite-length, metallic single-wall carbon nanotubes depends on type of nanotubes, boundary condition, length of nanotubes and spin-orbit interaction. Metal-1 nanotubes, in which two non-equivalent valleys in the Brillouin zone have different orbital angular momenta with respect to the tube axis, exhibits nearly fourfold degeneracy and small lift of the degeneracy by the spin-orbit interaction reflecting the decoupling of two valleys in the eigenfunctions. In metal-2 nanotubes, in which the two valleys have the same orbital angular momentum, vernier-scal…
We propose an ab-initio combination of the Linear Muffin-Tin Orbital and the Recursion Methods to study the effect of extended Stone-Wales defects in single layer Carbon nanotubes. We have successfully applied this to zigzag and armchair tubes. The methodology involves no intrinsic mean-field like assumptions or external parameter fitting. As defects proliferate, the low density of states near the Fermi levels of the pristine tubes is filled with defect states. The increase of DOS at the Fermi level leads to enhanced conduction, which indicates enhanced metallicity due to SW defects in the nan…
A gear effect is demonstrated at parallel and cross junctions between boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) via atomistic simulations. The atoms of neighboring BNNTs are meshed together at the junctions like gear teeth through long-range non-covalent interaction, which are shown to be able to transmit motion and power. The sliding motion of a BNNT can be spontaneously translated to rotating motion of an adjoining one or viceversa at a well-defined speed ratio. The transmittable motion and force strongly depend on the helical lattice structure of BNNTs represented by a chiral angle. The motion transm…
