We have extended the momentum-dependent local-ansatz (MLA) wavefunction method to the first-principles version using the tight-binding LDA+U Hamiltonian for the description of correlated electrons in the real system. The MLA reduces to the Rayleigh-Schrödinger perturbation theory in the weak correlation limit, and describes quantitatively the ground state and related low-energy excitations in solids. The theory has been applied to the paramagnetic Fe. The role of electron correlations on the energy, charge fluctuations, amplitude of local moment, momentum distribution functions, as well as the mass enhancement factor in Fe has been examined as a function of Coulomb interaction strength. It is shown that the inter-orbital charge-charge correlations between $d$ electrons make a significant contribution to the correlation energy and charge fluctuations, while the intra-orbital and inter-orbital spin-spin correlations make a dominant contribution to the amplitude of local moment and the mass enhancement in Fe. Calculated partial mass enhancements are found to be 1.01, 1.01, and 3.33 for $s$, $p$, and $d$ electrons, respectively. The averaged mass enhancement 1.65 is shown to be consistent with the experimental data as well as the recent results of theoretical calculations.
The momentum-dependent local-ansatz (MLA) wavefunction describes well correlated electrons in solids in both the weak and strong interaction regimes. In order to apply the theory to the realistic system, we have extended the MLA to the first-principles version using the tight-binding LDA+U Hamiltonian. We demonstrate for the paramagnetic Fe that the first-principles MLA can describe a reasonable correlation energy gain and suppression of charge fluctuations due to electron correlations. Furthermore, we show that the MLA yields a distinct momentum dependence of the momentum distribution, and th…
A fast time propagation method for nonequilibrium Green's functions based on the generalized Kadanoff--Baym Ansatz (GKBA) is applied to a lattice system with a symmetry-broken equilibrium phase, namely an excitonic insulator. The adiabatic preparation of a correlated symmetry-broken initial state from a Hartree--Fock wave function within GKBA is assessed by comparing with a solution of the imaginary-time Dyson equation. We find that it is possible to reach a symmetry-broken correlated initial state with nonzero excitonic order parameter by the adiabatic switching procedure. We discuss under wh…
The wavefunction method provides us with a useful tool to describe electron correlations in solids at the ground state. In this paper we review the recent development of the momentum-dependent local ansatz wavefunction (MLA). It is constructed by taking into account two-particle excited states projected onto the local orbitals, and the momentum-dependent amplitudes of these states are chosen as variational parameters. The MLA describes accurately correlated electron states from the weak to the intermediate Coulomb interaction regime in infinite dimensions, and works well even in the strongly c…
Momentum dependent local-ansatz wavefunction approach (MLA) to the correlated electron systems in solids has been further developed to solve best a self-consistent equation for variational parameters at non half-filling. With use of the improved variational scheme we performed the numerical calculations for the non-half-filled band Hubbard model on the hypercubic lattice in infinite dimensions. We verified that the self-consistent scheme significantly improves the correlation energy and the momentum distribution as compared with the original scheme in the MLA. We also demonstrate that the theo…
We have developed a first-principles local ansatz wavefunction approach with momentum-dependent variational parameters on the basis of the tight-binding LDA+U Hamiltonian. The theory goes beyond the first-principles Gutzwiller approach and quantitatively describes correlated electron systems. Using the theory, we find that the momentum distribution function (MDF) bands of paramagnetic bcc Fe along high-symmetry lines show a large deviation from the Fermi-Dirac function for the $d$ electrons with $e_{g}$ symmetry and yield the momentum-dependent mass enhancement factors. The calculated average …
The question about the existence of Bogoliubov's quasiparticles in the BCS wave functions underneath Gutzwiller's projection is of importance to strongly correlated systems. We develop a method to examine the two-particle excitations of Gutzwiller-projected BCS wave functions by using the variational Monte Carlo approach. We find that the exact Gutzwiller-projected quasiparticle (GQP) dispersions are quantitatively reproduced by the Gutzwiller-projected Bogoliubov quasiparticles (GBQP) except the regions where d-wave Cooper pairing is strong. Since GQP still shows higher energy than GBQP near …
We present a theoretical study on the response properties to an external electric field of strongly correlated one-dimensional metals. Our investigation is based on the recently developed Bethe-Ansatz local density approximation (BALDA) to the density functional theory formulation of the Hubbard model. This is capable of describing both Luttinger liquid and Mott-insulator correlations. The BALDA calculated values for the static linear polarizability are compared with those obtained by numerically accurate methods, such as exact (Lanczos) diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization g…
The variational theory of momentum dependent local-ansatz (MLA) has been generalized by introducing a hybrid (HB) wavefunction as a starting wavefunction, whose potential can flexibly change from the Hartree-Fock type to the alloy-analogy type by varying a weighting factor from zero to one. Numerical results based on the half-filled band Hubbard model on the hypercubic lattice in infinite dimensions show up that the new wavefunction yields the ground-state energy lower than that of the Gutzwiller wavefunction (GW) in the whole Coulomb interaction regime. Calculated double occupation number is …
The momentum distribution function (MDF) bands of iron-group transition metals from Sc to Cu have been investigated on the basis of the first-principles momentum dependent local ansatz wavefunction method. It is found that the MDF for $d$ electrons show a strong momentum dependence and a large deviation from the Fermi-Dirac distribution function along high-symmetry lines of the first Brillouin zone, while the $sp$ electrons behave as independent electrons. In particular, the deviation in bcc Fe (fcc Ni) is shown to be enhanced by the narrow $e_{g}$ ($t_{2g}$) bands with flat dispersion in the …
Momentum dependent local-ansatz (MLA) wavefunction describes accurately electron correlations from the weak to intermediate Coulomb interaction regimes. We point out that the MLA can describe the correlations from the weak to strong Coulomb interaction regimes by modifying the starting wavefunction from the Hartree-Fock (HF) type to an alloy-analogy (AA) type wavefunction. Numerical results based on the half-filled band Hubbard model on the hypercubic lattice in infinite dimensions show up that the new wavefunction yields the ground-state energy lower than the Gutzwiller wavefunction (GW) in t…
The first principles momentum dependent local ansatz wavefunction method (MLA) has been extended to the ferromagnetic state by introducing spin-dependent variational parameters. The theory is applied to the ferromagnetic Fe, Co, and Ni. It is shown that the MLA yields the magnetizations being comparable to the results obtained by the GGA (generalized gradient approximation) in the density functional theory. The projected momentum distribution functions as well as the mass enhancement factors are also calculated on the same footing, and are compared with those in the paramagnetic state. It is s…
The electronic band structure of many compounds, e.g., carbon-based structures, can exhibit essentially no dispersion. Models of electrons in flat-band lattices define non-perturbative strongly correlated problems by default. We construct a set of Jastrow-correlated ansatz wavefunctions to capture the low energy physics of interacting particles in flat bands. We test the ansatz in a simple Coulomb model of spinless electrons in a honeycomb ribbon. We find that the wavefunction accurately captures the ground state in a transition from a crystal to a uniform quantum liquid.
In non-equilibrium Green's function calculations the use of the Generalized Kadanoff-Baym Ansatz (GKBA) allows for a simple approximate reconstruction of the two-time Green's function from its time-diagonal value. With this a drastic reduction of the computational needs is achieved in time-dependent calculations, making longer time propagation possible and more complex systems accessible. This paper gives credit to the GKBA that was introduced 25 years ago. After a detailed derivation of the GKBA, we recall its application to homogeneous systems and show how to extend it to strongly correlated…
We consider a model of strongly correlated electrons in 1D called the t-J model, which was solved by graded algebraic Bethe ansatz. We use it to design graded tensor networks which can be contracted approximately to obtain a Matrix Product State. As a proof of principle, we calculate observables of ground states and excited states of finite lattices up to $18$ lattice sites.
The ground-state properties of iron-group transition metals from Sc to Cu have been investigated on the basis of the first-principles momentum dependent local ansatz (MLA) theory. Correlation energy gain is found to show large values for Mn and Fe: 0.090 Ry (Mn) and 0.094 Ry (Fe). The Hund-rule coupling energies are found to be 3000 K (Fe), 1400 K (Co), and 300 K (Ni). It is sugested that these values can resolve the inconsistency in magnetic energy between the density functional theory and the first-principles dynamical coherent potential approximation theory at finite temperatures. Charge fl…
We investigate the spectral properties of an open interacting system by solving the Generalized Kadanoff-Baym Ansatz (GKBA) master equation for the single-particle density matrix, namely the time-diagonal lesser Green's function. To benchmark its validity, we compare the solution obtained within the GKBA with the solution of the Dyson equation (equivalently the full Kadanoff-Baym equations). In both approaches, we treat the interaction within the self-consistent second-order Born approximation, whereas the GKBA still retains the retarded propagator calculated at the Hartree-Fock level. We cons…
We propose here a single Pfaffian correlated variational ansatz, that dramatically improves the accuracy with respect to the single determinant one, while remaining at a similar computational cost. A much larger correlation energy is indeed determined by the most general two electron pairing function, including both singlet and triplet channels, combined with a many-body Jastrow factor, including all possible spin-spin spin-density and density-density terms. The main technical ingredient to exploit this accuracy is the use of the Pfaffian for antisymmetrizing an highly correlated pairing funct…

Dynamical screening of the Coulomb interactions in correlated electron systems results in a low-energy effective problem with a dynamical Hubbard interaction U(omega). We propose a Green's function ansatz for the Anderson impurity problem with retarded interactions, in which the Green's function factorizes into a contribution stemming from an effective static-U problem and a bosonic high-energy part introducing collective plasmon excitations. Our approach relies on the scale separation of the low-energy properties, related to the instantaneous static U, from the intermediate to high energy fea…
We identify a structure in the spectra of 1d lattice models of interacting electrons, characterised by an anomalous gapped branch of elementary excitations. Focusing on a family of Bethe ansatz solvable models, where all excitations are stable against decay, we make a four-way classification of the energy spectrum along with a model belonging to each class. We find in particular that the anomalous excitation branch may switch between the spin and charge symmetry sectors without a change in the ground state. Instead it changes its nature by becoming inaccessible to the ground state.
We consider a doped Mott insulator in the large dimensionality limit within both the recently developed Extremely Correlated Fermi Liquid (ECFL) theory and the Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (DMFT). We show that the general structure of the ECFL sheds light on the rich frequency-dependence of the DMFT self-energy. Using the leading Fermi-liquid form of the two key auxiliary functions introduced in the ECFL theory, we obtain an analytical ansatz which provides a good quantitative description of the DMFT self-energy down to hole doping level 0.2. In particular, the deviation from Fermi-liquid behav…
We present a way of partly reincorporate the effects of the localized bonding electrons on the dynamics of their itinerant counterparts in Hubbard-like Hamiltonians. This is done by relaxing the constraint that the former should be entirely frozen in the chemical bonds between the underlying lattice sites through the employment of a Born-Oppenheimer-like ansatz for the wavefunction of the whole electronic system. Accordingly, the latter includes itinerant as well as bonding electron coordinates. Going beyond the adiabatic approximation, we show that the net effect of virtual transitions of bon…
A general formalism for the study of excitations above equilibrium in Bethe ansatz solvable models is presented. Nonzero temperature expressions for dressed energy, momentum, spin and charge are obtained, and it is found that the dressed spin and charge are in general momentum dependent. For an electronic model one may only have spin-charge separation at zero temperature where the ground state is half-filled and has zero magnetisation. Finally, the excitations of the Hubbard-Shastry models are examined in detail.
We propose a method for computing space-resolved correlation properties of the two-dimensional Hubbard model within a quantum-classical embedding strategy that uses a Noisy, Intermediate Scale Quantum (NISQ) computer to solve the embedded model. While previous approaches were limited to purely local, one-impurity embedded models, requiring at most four qubits and relatively shallow circuits, we solve a two-impurity model requiring eight qubits with an advanced hybrid scheme on top of the Variational Quantum Eigensolver algorithm. This iterative scheme, dubbed Natural Orbitalization (NOization)…
Within the non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) formalism, the Generalized Kadanoff-Baym Ansatz (GKBA) has stood out as a computationally cheap method to investigate the dynamics of interacting quantum systems driven out of equilibrium. Current implementations of the NEGF--GKBA, however, suffer from a drawback: real-time simulations require {\em noncorrelated} states as initial states. Consequently, initial correlations must be built up through an adiabatic switching of the interaction before turning on any external field, a procedure that can be numerically highly expensive. In this work, …
We present a tree-tensor-network-based method to study strongly correlated systems with nonlocal interactions in higher dimensions. Although the momentum-space and quantum-chemistry versions of the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method have long been applied to such systems, the spatial topology of DMRG-based methods allows efficient optimizations to be carried out with respect to one spatial dimension only. Extending the matrix-product-state picture, we formulate a more general approach by allowing the local sites to be coupled to more than two neighboring auxiliary subspaces. Fo…
The ground state of the two-dimensional (2D) Hubbard model is investigated by adopting improved wave functions that take into account intersite electron correlation beyond the Gutzwiller ansatz. The ground-state energy is lowered considerably, giving the best estimate of the ground-state energy for the 2D Hubbard model. There is a crossover from weakly to strongly correlated regions as the on-site Coulomb interaction $U$ increases. The antiferromagnetic correlation induced by $U$ is reduced for hole doping when $U$ is large, being greater than the bandwidth, thus increasing the kinetic energy …
A variational ansatz for momentum eigenstates of translation invariant quantum spin chains is formulated. The matrix product state ansatz works directly in the thermodynamic limit and allows for an efficient implementation (cubic scaling in the bond dimension) of the variational principle. Unlike previous approaches, the ansatz includes topologically non-trivial states (kinks, domain walls) for systems with symmetry breaking. The method is benchmarked using the spin-1/2 XXZ antiferromagnet and the spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnet and we obtain surprisingly accurate results.
The Gutzwiller variational wavefunction (GVW) is commonly employed to capture correlation effects in condensed matter systems such as ferromagnets, ultracold bosonic gases, correlated superconductors, etc. By noticing that the grand-canonical and number-conserving Gutzwiller Ansätze are in fact the zero-order approximation of an expansion in the truncation parameter of a Matrix Product State (MPS), we argue that MPSs, and the algorithms used to operate on them, are not only flexible computational tools but also a unifying theoretical framework that can be used to generalize and improve on the …
Diradical molecules are essential species involved in many organic and inorganic chemical reactions. The computational study of their electronic structure is often challenging, because a reliable description of the correlation, and in particular of the static one, requires multi-reference techniques. The Jastrow correlated Antisymmetrized Geminal Power (JAGP) is a compact and efficient wave function ansatz, based on the valence-bond representation, which can be used within Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) approaches. The AGP part can be rewritten in terms of molecular orbitals, obtaining a multi-dete…
The consequences of dynamical screening of Coulomb interaction among correlated electrons in realistic materials have not been widely considered before. In this letter we try to incorporate a frequency dependent Coulomb interaction into the state-of-the-art ab initio electronic structure computing framework of local density approximation plus dynamical mean-field theory, and then choose SrVO3 as a prototype material to demonstrate the importance of dynamical screening effect. It is shown to renormalise the spectral weight near the Fermi level, to increase the effective mass, and to suppress th…
