We estimate numerically the regularities of a family of Strange Non--Chaotic Attractors related with one of the models studied in C. Grebogy et al. (1984) (see also G. Keller (1996)). To estimate these regularities we use wavelet analysis in the spirit of R. de la Llave et al. (2002) together with some ad-hoc techniques that we develop to overcome the theoretical difficulties that arise in the application of the method to the particular family that we consider. These difficulties are mainly due to the facts that we do not have an explicit formula for the attractor and it is discontinuous almost everywhere for some values of the parameters. Concretely we propose an algorithm based on the Fast Wavelet Transform. Also a quality check of the wavelet coefficients and regularity estimates is done.
This work contains the results from a comprehensive study of a new class of attractors. The attractors in this class are characterized by strong local instability, but they are not uniformly hyperbolic. Rigorous results on their dynamical, geometric and statistical properties are presented.
In this paper we present a comprehensive mechanism for the emergence of strange attractors in a two-parametric family of differential equations acting on a three-dimensional sphere. When both parameters are zero, its flow exhibits an attracting heteroclinic network (Bykov network) made by two 1-dimensional connections and one 2-dimensional separatrix between two hyperbolic saddles-foci with different Morse indices. After slightly increasing both parameters, while keeping the one-dimensional connections unaltered, we focus our attention in the case where the two-dimensional invariant manifolds …
We study the geometric and topological properties of strange non-chaotic attractors created in non-smooth saddle-node bifurcations of quasiperiodically forced interval maps. By interpreting the attractors as limit objects of the iterates of a continuous curve and controlling the geometry of the latter, we determine their Hausdorff and box-counting dimension and show that these take distinct values. Moreover, the same approach allows to describe the topological structure of the attractors and to prove their minimality.
In this paper we present a mechanism for the emergence of strange attractors in a one-parameter family of differential equations acting on a 3-dimensional sphere. When the parameter is zero, its flow exhibits an attracting heteroclinic network (Bykov network) made by two 1-dimensional connections and one 2-dimensional separatrix between hyperbolic saddles-foci with different Morse indices. After slightly increasing the parameter, while keeping the 1-dimensional connections unaltered, we concentrate our study in the case where the 2-dimensional invariant manifolds of the equilibria do not inter…
A generalized attracting horseshoe is introduced as a new paradigm for describing chaotic strange attractors (of arbitrary finite rank) for smooth and piecewise smooth maps f from Q to Q, where Q is a homeomorph of the unit interval in real m-space for any integer m > 1. The main theorems for generalized attracting horseshoes are shown to apply to Henon and Lozi maps, thereby leading to rather simple new chaotic strange attractor existence proofs that apply to a range of parameter values that includes those of earlier proofs.
In the present paper we focus on the problem of the existence of strange pseudohyperbolic attractors for three-dimensional diffeomorphisms. Such attractors are genuine strange attractors in that sense that each orbit in the attractor has a positive maximal Lyapunov exponents and this property is robust, i.e. it holds for all close systems. We restrict attention to the study of pseudohyperbolic attractors that contain only one fixed point. Then we show that three-dimensional maps may have only 5 different types of such attractors, which we call the discrete Lorenz, figure-8, double-figure-8, su…
We study strange non-chaotic attractors in a class of quasiperiodically forced monotone interval maps known as pinched skew products. We prove that the probability of positive time-N Lyapunov exponents, with respect to the unique physical measure on the attractor, decays exponentially as N goes to infinity. The motivation for this work comes from the study of finite-time Lyapunov exponents as possible early-warning signals of critical transitions in the context of forced dynamics.
Let $Φ$ be a quasi-periodically forced quadratic map, where the rotation constant $ω$ is a Diophantine irrational. A strange non-chaotic attractor (SNA) is an invariant (under $Φ$) attracting graph of a nowhere continuous measurable function $ψ$ from the circle $\mathbb{T}$ to $[0,1]$. This paper investigates how a smooth attractor degenerates into a strange one, as a parameter $β$ approaches a critical value $β_0$, and the asymptotics behind the bifurcation of the attractor from smooth to strange. In our model, the cause of the strange attractor is a so-called torus collision, whereby an attr…
We show that the classic example of quasiperiodically forced maps with strange nonchaotic attractors described by Grebogi et al and Herman in the mid-1980s have some chaotic properties. More precisely, we show that these systems exhibit sensitive dependence on initial conditions, both on the whole phase space and restricted to the attractor. The results also remain valid in more general classes of quasiperiodically forced systems. Further, we include an elementary proof of a classic result by Glasner and Weiss on sensitive dependence, and we clarify the structure of the attractor in an example…
We prove that the coexistence of infinitely many prevalent Hénon-like phenomena is Kolmogorov typical in sectional dissipative $C^{d,r}$-Berger domains of parameter families of diffeomorphisms of dimension $m\geq 3$ for $d<r-1$. Namely, we answer an old question posed by Colli in [Annales de l'Institut Henri Poincare-Nonlinear Analysis, 15, 539--580 (1998)] on typicality of the coexistence of infinitely many non-hyperbolic strange attractors for $3\leq d<r-1$.
For a two parameter family of two-dimensional piecewise linear maps and for every natural number $ n $ we prove not only the existence of intervals of parameters for which the respective maps are $ n $ times renormalizable but also we show the existence of intervals of parameters where the coexistence of at least $ 2^n $ strange attractors takes place. This family of maps contains the two-dimensional extension of the classical one-dimensional family of tent maps.
We review the theory of strange attractors and their bifurcations. All known strange attractors may be subdivided into the following three groups: hyperbolic, pseudo-hyperbolic ones and quasi-attractors. For the first ones the description of bifurcations that lead to the appearance of Smale-Williams solenoids and Anosov-type attractors is given. The definition and the description of the attractors of the second class are introduced in the general case. It is pointed out that the main feature of the attractors of this class is that they contain no stable orbits. An etanol example of such pseudo…
The asymmetrically forced, damped Duffing oscillator is introduced as a prototype model for analyzing the homoclinic tangle of symmetric dissipative systems with \textit{symmetry breaking} disturbances. Even a slight fixed asymmetry in the perturbation may cause a substantial change in the asymptotic behavior of the system, e.g. transitions from two sided to one sided strange attractors as the other parameters are varied. Moreover, slight asymmetries may cause substantial asymmetries in the relative size of the basins of attraction of the unforced nearly symmetric attracting regions. These cha…
We study the dynamics of the periodically-forced May-Leonard system. We extend previous results on the field and we identify different dynamical regimes depending on the strength of attraction $δ$ of the network and the frequency $ω$ of the periodic forcing. We focus our attention in the case $δ\gg1$ and $ω\approx 0$, where we show that, for a positive Lebesgue measure set of parameters (amplitude of the periodic forcing), the dynamics are dominated by strange attractors with fully stochastic properties, supporting a Sinai-Ruelle-Bowen (SRB) measure. The proof is performed by using the Wang an…
We present a mechanism for the emergence of strange attractors (observable chaos) in a two-parameter periodically-perturbed family of differential equations on the plane. The two parameters are independent and act on different ways in the invariant manifolds of consecutive saddles in the cycle. When both parameters are zero, the flow exhibits an attracting heteroclinic cycle associated to two equilibria. The first parameter makes the two-dimensional invariant manifolds of consecutive saddles in the cycle to pull apart; the second forces transverse intersection. These relative positions may be …
We analyze a multiparameter periodically-forced dynamical system inspired in the SIR endemic model. We show that the condition on the \emph{basic reproduction number} $\mathcal{R}_0 < 1$ is not sufficient to guarantee the elimination of \emph{Infectious} individuals due to a \emph{backward bifurcation}. Using the theory of rank-one attractors, for an open subset in the space of parameters where $\mathcal{R}_0<1$, the flow exhibits \emph{persistent strange attractors}. These sets are not confined to a tubular neighbourhood in the phase space, are numerically observable and shadow the ghost of a…
In this paper, we study a two-parameter family of two-dimensional diffeomorphisms such that it has a cubic homoclinic tangency unfolding generically which is associated with a dissipative saddle point. Our first theorem presents an open set in the parameter-plane such that, for any parameter value in the open set, there exists a one-parameter subfamily through this value exhibiting cubically related persistent contact-making and contact-breaking quadratic tangencies. Moreover, the second theorem shows that any such two-parameter family satisfies Wang-Young's conditions which guarantee that it …
In this article we construct the parameter region where the existence of a homoclinic orbit to a zero equilibrium state of saddle type in the Lorenz-like system will be analytically proved in the case of a nonnegative saddle value. Then, for a qualitative description of the different types of homoclinic bifurcations, a numerical analysis of the detected parameter region is carried out to discover several new interesting bifurcation scenarios.
In this paper, we study heterodimensional cycles of two-parameter families of 3-dimensional diffeomorphisms some element of which contains nondegenerate heterodimensional tangencies of the stable and unstable manifolds of two saddle points with different indexes, and prove that such diffeomorphisms can be well approximated by another element which has a quadratic homoclinic tangency associated to one of these saddle points. Moreover, it is shown that the tangency unfolds generically with respect to the family. This result together with some theorem in Viana, we detect strange attractors appear…
Somehow, the revised version of our paper \cite{KY} does not appear on journals' home page. Here we present the revised version altered to reflect the corrections and/or additions to that paper. In this note, we consider self-affine attractors that are generated by an integer expanding $n\times n$ matrix (i.e., all of its eigenvalues have moduli $>1$) and a finite set of vectors in ${\Bbb{Z}}^n$. We concentrate on the problem of connectedness for $n\leq 2$. Although, there has been intensive study on the topic recently, this problem is not settled even in the one-dimensional case. We focus on …
A discrete dynamical system in Euclidean m-space generated by the iterates of an asymptotically zero map f, satisfying f(x) goes to zero as x goes to infinity, must have a compact global attracting set $A $. The question of what additional hypotheses are sufficient to guarantee that A has a minimal (invariant) subset A* that is a chaotic strange attractor is answered in detail for a few types of asymptotically zero maps. These special cases happen to have many applications (especially as mathematical models for a variety of processes in ecological and population dynamics), some of which are pr…
The occurrence of strange non-chaotic attractors (SNA) in quasiperiodically forced systems has attracted considerable interest over the last two decades, in particular since it provides a rich class of examples for the possibility of complicated dynamics in the absence of chaos. Their existence was discovered in the early 1980's, independently by Herman for quasiperiodic SL(2,R)-cocycles and by Grebogi et al for so-called 'pinched skew products'. However, except for these two particular classes there are still hardly any rigorous results on the topic, despite a large number of numerical studie…
We propose a general mechanism by which strange non-chaotic attractors (SNA) are created during the collision of invariant curves in quasiperiodically forced systems. This mechanism is first discussed on an heuristic level and by means of simulations. In the considered examples, a stable and an unstable invariant circle undergo a saddle-node bifurcation, but instead of a neutral invariant curve there exists a strange non-chaotic attractor-repeller pair at the bifurcation point. This process is accompanied by a very characteristic behaviour of the invariant curves prior to their collision, whic…
We consider strange attractors of two dimensional generalized map with one nonlinearity such that Lozi, Hénon and Belykh maps are particular cases of it. We describe technique of invariant expanding and contracting cones creation for study of hyperbolic properties. Theorems of singular hyperbolic attractors for new modifications of Lozi, Hénon and Belykh-type maps are presented.
The existence of non-continuous invariant graphs (or strange non-chaotic attractors) in quasiperiodically forced systems has generated great interest, but there are still very few rigorous results about the properties of these objects. In particular, it is not known whether the topological closure of such graphs is typically a filled-in set, i.e consists of a single interval on every fibre, or not. We give a positive answer to this question for the class of so-called pinched skew products, where non-continuous invariant graphs occur generically, provided the rotation number on the base is diop…
In diverse physical systems stable oscillatory solutions devolve into more complicated dynamical behaviour through border-collision bifurcations. Mathematically these occur when a stable fixed point of a piecewise-smooth map collides with a switching manifold as parameters are varied. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the extreme complexity possible in the subsequent dynamics. We perturb instances of the border-collision normal form in $n \ge 2$ dimensions for which the $n^{\rm th}$ iterate is a direct product of identical skew tent maps that have chaotic attractors comprised of $k \ge…
Previous studies have shown that rate-induced transitions can occur in pullback attractors of systems subject to "parameter shifts" between two asymptotically steady values of a system parameter. For cases where the attractors limit to equilibrium or periodic orbit in past and future limits of such an nonautonomous systems, these can occur as the parameter change passes through a critical rate. Such rate-induced transitions for attractors that limit to chaotic attractors in past or future limits has been less examined. In this paper, we identify a new phenomenon is associated with more complex…
We describe some recent results on the dynamics of singular-hyperbolic (or Lorenz-like) attractors: attractors in this class are expansive and so sensitive with respect to initial data; they admit a unique physical measure whose support is the whole attractor, which is hyperbolic and the equilibrium state with respect to the center-unstable Jacobian; the hitting time associated to a geometric Lorenz attractor satisfies a logarithm law; the rate of large deviations for the physical measure on the ergodic basin of a geometric Lorenz attractor is exponential.
We prove that a singular-hyperbolic attractor of a 3-dimensional flow is chaotic, in two strong different senses. Firstly, the flow is expansive: if two points remain close for all times, possibly with time reparametrization, then their orbits coincide. Secondly, there exists a physical (or Sinai-Ruelle-Bowen) measure supported on the attractor whose ergodic basin covers a full Lebesgue (volume) measure subset of the topological basin of attraction. Moreover this measure has absolutely continuous conditional measures along the center-unstable direction, is a $u$-Gibbs state and an equilibrium …
An attractor of a piecewise-smooth continuous system of differential equations can bifurcate from a stable equilibrium to a more complicated invariant set when it collides with a switching manifold under parameter variation. Here numerical evidence is provided to show that this invariant set can be chaotic. The transition occurs locally (in a neighbourhood of a point) and instantaneously (for a single critical parameter value). This phenomenon is illustrated for the normal form of a boundary equilibrium bifurcation in three dimensions using parameter values adapted from of a piecewise-linear m…
In this paper, we explore the three-dimensional chaotic set near a homoclinic cycle to a hyperbolic bifocus at which the vector field has negative divergence. If the invariant manifolds of the bifocus satisfy a non-degeneracy condition, a sequence of hyperbolic suspended horseshoes arises near the cycle, with one expanding and two contracting directions. We extend previous results on the field and we show that the first return map to a given cross section may be approximated by a map exhibiting heteroclinic tangencies associated to two periodic orbits. When the cycle is broken, under an additi…
Unidirectionally coupled Lorenz systems in which the drive possesses a chaotic attractor and the response admits two stable equilibria in the absence of the driving is under investigation. It is found that double chaotic attractors coexist in the dynamics. The approach is applicable for chains of coupled Lorenz systems. The existence of four chaotic attractors in three coupled Lorenz systems is also demonstrated.
We define a quantitative notion of shear for limit cycles of flows. We prove that strange attractors and SRB measures emerge when systems exhibiting limit cycles with sufficient shear are subjected to periodic pulsatile drives. The strange attractors possess a number of precisely-defined dynamical properties that together imply chaos that is both sustained in time and physically observable.
Poincaré recognized that phase portraits are mainly structured around fixed points. Nevertheless, the knowledge of fixed points and their properties is not sufficient to determine the whole structure of chaotic attractors. In order to understand how chaotic attractors are shaped by singular sets of the differential equations governing the dynamics, flow curvature manifolds are computed. We show that the time dependent components of such manifolds structure Rossler-like chaotic attractors and may explain some limitation in the development of chaotic regimes.
We prove that spiral sinks (stable foci of vector fields) can be transformed into strange attractors exhibiting sustained, observable chaos if subjected to periodic pulsatile forcing. We show that this phenomenon occurs in the context of periodically-kicked degenerate supercritical Hopf bifurcations. The results and their proofs make use of a new multi-parameter version of the theory of rank one maps developed by Wang and Young.
We introduce a one-parameter family of polymatrix replicators defined in a three-dimensional cube and study its bifurcations. For a given interval of parameters, this family exhibits suspended horseshoes and persistent strange attractors. The proof relies on the existence of a homoclinic cycle to the interior equilibrium. We also describe the phenomenological steps responsible for the transition from regular to chaotic dynamics in our system (route to chaos).
We study pinball billiard dynamics in an equilateral triangular table. In such dynamics, collisions with the walls are non-elastic: the outgoing angle with the normal vector to the boundary is a uniform factor $λ< 1$ smaller than the incoming angle. This leads to contraction in phase space for the discrete-time dynamics between consecutive collisions, and hence to attractors of zero Lebesgue measure, which are almost always fractal strange attractors with chaotic dynamics, due to the presence of an expansion mechanism. We study the structure of these strange attractors and their evolution as t…
We argue that a discrete Shilnikov attractor exists in the system of five identical globally coupled phase oscillators with biharmonic coupling. We explain the scenario that leads to birth of this kind of attractor and numerically illustrate the sequence of bifurcations that supports our statement.
Non-smooth saddle-node bifurcations give rise to minimal sets of interesting geometry built of so-called strange non-chaotic attractors. We show that certain families of quasiperiodically driven logistic differential equations undergo a non-smooth bifurcation. By a previous result on the occurrence of non-smooth bifurcations in forced discrete time dynamical systems, this yields that within the class of families of quasiperiodically driven differential equations, non-smooth saddle-node bifurcations occur in a set with non-empty C2-interior.
We study the dynamics of billiard models with a modified collision rule: the outgoing angle from a collision is a uniform contraction, by a factor lambda, of the incident angle. These pinball billiards interpolate between a one-dimensional map when lambda=0 and the classical Hamiltonian case of elastic collisions when lambda=1. For all lambda<1, the dynamics is dissipative, and thus gives rise to attractors, which may be periodic or chaotic. Motivated by recent rigorous results of Markarian, Pujals and Sambarino, we numerically investigate and characterise the bifurcations of the resulting att…
The Lorenz attractor was introduced in 1963 by E. N. Lorenz as one of the first examples of \emph{strange attractors}. However Lorenz' research was mainly based on (non-rigourous) numerical simulations and, until recently, the proof of the existence of the Lorenz attractor remained elusive. To address that problem some authors introduced geometric Lorenz models and proved that geometric Lorenz models have a strange attractor. In 2002 it was shown that the original Lorenz model behaves like a geometric Lorenz model and thus has a strange attractor. In this paper we show that geometric Lorenz at…
In this paper, we propose a novel methodology for automatically finding new chaotic attractors through a computational intelligence technique known as multi-gene genetic programming (MGGP). We apply this technique to the case of the Lorenz attractor and evolve several new chaotic attractors based on the basic Lorenz template. The MGGP algorithm automatically finds new nonlinear expressions for the different state variables starting from the original Lorenz system. The Lyapunov exponents of each of the attractors are calculated numerically based on the time series of the state variables using t…
We study chaotic dynamics in a system of four differential equations describing the dynamics of five identical globally coupled phase oscillators with biharmonic coupling. We show that this system exhibits strange spiral attractors (Shilnikov attractors) with two zero (indistinguishable from zero in numerics) Lyapunov exponents in a wide region of the parameter space. We explain this phenomenon by means of bifurcation analysis of the three-dimensional Poincaré map for the system under consideration. We show that the chaotic dynamics develop here near a codimension three bifurcation, when a per…
We study the spatial spread of out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOCs) in coupled map lattices (CMLs) of quasiperiodically forced nonlinear maps. We use instantaneous speed (IS) and finite-time Lyapunov exponents (FTLEs) to investigate the role of strange non-chaotic attractors (SNAs) on the spatial spread of the OTOC. We find that these CMLs exhibit a characteristic on and off type of spread of the OTOC for SNA. Further, we provide a broad spectrum of the various dynamical regimes in a two-parameter phase diagram using IS and FTLEs. We substantiate our results by confirming the presence of SN…
